Chapter 22: Earth

Hearing his remark, Ellie has a different opinion. “That is subjective to anyone. I find it intriguing enough. This thing led a life on planet Earth for millions of years, and suddenly, there are none of them. Only humans, and occasional massive animals, who are not nearly as big, or like this...”

“Dinosaur... Prehistoric... Millions of years...” William reads the few following paragraphs and uncovers some interesting facts, but as he expected, the need to know them is not as useful.

“So those things are like an oversized lizard, with wolf mentality? Sounds like Dark Beings to me.” he assumes.

“Were! Those things are of the past... nothing less. They are all here, to prove a small glance at millions of years into the past.”

“I doubt there were even humans millions of years ago...” William thinks to himself, as they continue walking within the exhibitions.

There are a lot of things to follow. Historically accurate findings of many organizations of the past century to a few decades are stored here. Most are only for some individuals who are interested in seeing them.

One hope, that the library holds, is that this would remain here, for more centuries to follow so that history would not get lost as it did. The loss of the Dark beings' arrival caused history to plunder to oblivion, with many nations disappearing from the annals of history. Only records that state their names remain.

William looks at many sights, and many historical aspects from millions of years, to a few centuries ago, Some depicted humans, others animals, or the objects that humans created in the past. Weapons, culture, and other such details.

“There is even a miniature of some of the wonders of the world. Or, however, people called that.” Sarey points to an exhibition ahead of them. Pictures, as well as some stuff some craft workers remade upon getting details about them, are displayed there.

“A Pyramid?” William glances at one particular one, which is the biggest amongst them. It has its name displayed on the front.

Rectangular-shaped architecture of a meter in height that ends on a golden layered point.

“Yes, this one was in Egypt, or perhaps still is? I doubt the time ended its life since it is in the area of north Africa's continent.”

“This is from so far away?” William asks in astonishment.

Ellie giggles and further explains. “This is just a miniature. The real deal is hundreds if not thousands of times bigger than this small thing.” William still glances at it in astonishment, before moving on to other things that Ellie wants to show him.

Today, she asserts the leading role, since she becomes quite aware that William would get lost for hours in only a couple of exhibitions.

Be it his lack of interest or look of skepticism, she could not help but know that William still holds some curiosity about this place. Even if he would not admit it or not, she doesn't mind going with the flow.

Hours pass and they still have yet to visit any of the restricted places.

William spent all this time listening to Ellie's explanations and broadening his horizon in a state he would not expect but at this point, he accept it. Although it is not to his satisfaction when it comes to the uses for the future, he holds higher hopes for the more interesting things in the restricted spaces.

“The world was surely a vast place... I feel like we are living in the blink of this time. Humanity had such a wonderful history, yet it was and still is being destroyed by the Dark beings... I hate this, Will.” Ellie says to William, who is reading the brief historical meanings of the American continents.

“So the continent of my origin originates from the 18th century?” William assumes, without much listening to Ellie's meaningful words.

“Not really. There are also some records of many further investigations many centuries ago to a few millennia. They found not a lot of records, only some brief mentions thought old books or whatnot. Only some glances, through the digital spaces that were managed throughout the century. Very little is still usable. However, the USA's prime times began in that century, which follows to the present. Well, at least what is left of it. I could say the same about Canada.”

“Like this Wikipedia space, this exhibition talks about?” William points to the table that puts sources of the information and their history.

“Yes. It was a digital space to get a piece of knowledge and easy information, with no effort at all. It was like the biggest encyclopedia in the world.”

“It was that big?”

“Yes. Even though only 10 or so percent of it remains at the current time. The majority of the sights of this Museum are not from that though. You must have realized it by now that a lot of things here are not copies. They are original pieces of history. Pages, books, paintings, and so on what you have seen so far.”

“Yeah, I guess you are right. They are all looking old and worn down.” William agrees.

“How about the first restricted place?” Ellie offers since she could see that William ends his wandering eyes of reading.

“You won't say much to this history?” William points to the small sides of depictions of the American continents, and their history.

“No, since the first one is about that, too. Follow me.” Ellie says with a pointing finger upwards.

William follows as he is used to this by now. Behind the sides of the exhibitions are the room, with many doors further behind the walls that lead to the secret rooms. One has to have the card for going inside.

William put the card right on the handle, and it slides into the wall once again. Beyond this closed space of walls is another massive space, which is very barren and empty. There are also no lights or windows, unlike the open space before.

“What is this?” William asks, without seeing Ellie anywhere.

Suddenly, a globe of a few meters in diameter is lit up in the very middle of this wide and tall room. He could see that Ellie standing below the globe, that lights the surroundings.

William walks to her and sees the lighting globe.

“Is this what I think it is?” he blurts out.

“I hope? It is our little planet.”

She is right, while William is mesmerized by the myriad of lines that depict the continents, oceans, currents, and many mountainous sides that protrude from the globe.

“It is the last remaining lifelike depiction of our planet. Those mountainous regions should even make some real-life meaning to their heights. It should be around the same perspective as reality. At least, what it looks like a century ago when this thing was built.”

“This thing is a century old?” William points with his finger at the globe, in a remarkable nod.

“Who in their right minds sees this, our planets, at such details...”

“Past humans did. Perhaps some Walkers could accomplish the same, but they are having their problems against the Dark.”

William nods to her remark, and goes around the globe, which is unmoving, placed on a stand and lit up by the lights. One could still see the glaciers that are in the south, as well as slight glimpses of northern Arctica. The globe is too tall, so William can't see too much of it, since it is too big.

There are even names for everything. Including the ocean, islands, nations, and kingdoms.

They put a whole word into a display.

William quickly realized one idea, and he does not hesitate to ask.

“But... Why is this restricted? This world? This place?”

“It is the least restricted space. One could get inside with an additional payment of a couple of credits. Don't ask me why, since I don't get this either.” Ellie bluntly answers.

“But, if I have to guess, it is probably because of the stairs in that corner.” she points to one particular corner, which has a staircase leading with a swirling motion above the ceiling.

“Can I go up?” William asks as he remembers Luke's words from the last night.

“Yes.” Ellie hasn't stopped him, so there is at least no stopping him, yet.

Since there is only the globe with the incredible display of the planet, William is looking through everything for a few minutes. Engraving this into his memory, so he will never forget it.

This, by far, is the most shocking sigh he has seen within this library. Not including the Library itself.

Ellie hasn't added much since coming to this room. Not like this place holds too much. Only a whole representation of the planet. Not a big deal.

“Let's see what is above this.” William decides, and walks the staircase, right into the 5th floor. He momentarily stops himself halfway through, to see the globe from a higher perspective. It adds nothing since the stairs are too far away from the globe. He just glances at the home of his planet, which spans millions if not more years of history.

Reaching the end of the stairs, the room he emerges into has some similarities with lower floors. William understands what this is about.

“So this is like a historical book library. Like the first and the second floor.”

Ellie soon reaches this place as well. She already knows what is here. A historical section of the many continents with further details.

“Careful about this, Will. There are a lot of old books. Some even older than before the Dark.” Ellie reminds him.

“What is this about? Are those...”

“This is something you said you are interested in where you came here. A historical overview of many situations in the past nations, kingdoms, continents, and people in general.”

“There is so much.” William glances through the dozens upon dozens of bookshelves, with hundreds, if not thousands of books each. This room is to the brim, covered with books and the smell of the paper is quite distict.

“One would have no chance to read everything in their lives.” William breathlessly says.

“Yes. That is true. This is a collection of quite a few lifespans of both the past and the present. Above them are their respective sections.” Ellie points above each shelf. This is one of the biggest records human history is currently possessing. Not fully, or even close to everything, but it is still very much better than nothing.

William looks above the 2-meter shelves, to see a sign with many names littered across this big room. This is a bigger, much bigger room than the one below. Yet, with a lower ceiling.

There are sectors of bookshelves in the chronological order of the recorded history and importance.

“Not like it is made up. The majority of the things within this room are carefully picked, or retrieved collections of historical books, which were hidden when the apocalypse struck humanity.” Ellie explains.

“At that time, many people were struck by the disaster, no matter where. But! With the vast amount of distances and human settlements scattered literally through the entire planet. You can imagine the time necessary to destroy it all.”

“Yea... I can guess it. What is the size of the planet below is a matter of perspective. It is dozens of thousands of miles in diameter. Am I right?”

“Yes.”

“It is like the name of the book from the third floor. Named Around the world in 80 days, is it not? One has to be a madman to travel around a planet of such size.” William asks, without knowing too much context about the book.

Ellie chuckles but agrees with William's guess and analogy.
