61 Shepherd's Border

"So she finally told me." Mama stops tapping, "Did she now?" "Yeah." She goes back to tapping, "Say Mama, we kill them bastards?" She shakes her head, "There's more of them lizards, demons ahead, other creatures. We need them and they need us." I sigh, "I don't think they can take much more of this." She sighs, "The angry youth." "Yup." I dust off the crack in my arm and march up to a bonfire. Dave and Jack stare at the flames dancing, Norbert and Rose spar, Jean's gettin' hit on by them army boys, she really tries to let them down gently. I walk up and she turns to me, the soldiers walk away when they see me. "How's the arm?" "I'm alright, won't heal, but it still works." I grab her cheeks, she tries to pull away and the Humble-men turn. She gives in and looks in my eyes. I let go and hug her to whisper, "Quit that smiling already, it's alright to be sad sometimes." She squeezes and a country boy shouts, "You alright, miss? Demon bothering you?" She slips out the hug and rushes away. I glare at the man from our southern border, dust mask, oversized jacket, big briefcase, a sniper on his back. Instead of a tip of a hat, he raises the case with a smile, "Demonio de piedra.", then walks away.

I shake my head, "Jackass." Jack runs up, "Diesel! Diesel!" Rose huffs with Norbert not far behind. "Yeah?" He clenches his fists, "Rose said Norbert can beat you up!" "What?" I look at Norbert, "No chance in hell." Norbert shakes his head, "I'd beat you easy." I smile, "Alright, let's see what you've got, kid." We raise our fists, "Come on, great grandpa."

He smirks as my heart cranks up a notch, everyone surrounds us as we inch closer. I rush in and throw a punch, he just slips through and I jump, a knife pokes at my leg. "How'd you survive out here, anyway?" I jump forward and he's already near, heart this time, "The sweat of my brow!" I swing my fist into the knife and it flies out his hand. He ducks and explodes up, a truck hits my chin. Stars from a middleweight.

Soldiers drowned out cheering and roars, "Dad!" He reaches out, I can't reach him. Those demons, they claw at his legs. "Son!" Mama frowns, "Run away Jack!" Mama tries to run from a lizard, but she trips. I run to her and now Jack's in my arms, coughing up blood with a smile, bullet holes. Jean tears at her hair at the sight of him, breathing heavy. That spanish fellow smiles wide with a machete, "Demonio de piedra." He cleaves down and blood spatters.
