13 Casualties

I groan as he stumbles in, "Well? How'd it go?" "Heart of the city's cleared and soldiers kill anyone trying to run. I bang my fist down, "They're not checking anyone?" He shakes, "Uhhh, no sir." I turn on my radio and grab the microphone, "Order your men to check for infection or so help me god-" *Yes sir.* "And you can only return fire. We aren't the monsters here!" I slam the mic down.

It's been a couple hours of driving and silence. The smell hasn't gone away, it's only gotten stronger. Nell sighs, "How far are we off?" The ships seem a lot bigger now. Sunny points at the massive mothership among them, "Wait, we're gonna be up against the Lady Liberty?" Nell peeks up front, "Oh hell no!"

Lady Liberty, the symbol of freedom, but it's enemies only knew carnage at it's hand, the only interplanetary transport ship. I snarl, let's change that. "Lady Liberty'll go down." "But three people against the army's greatest weapon?" Sunny rubs my back, "There's nothing we can do." I stare ahead at the fleet, then at the camp, "Then we seek refuge."

Nell shouts, "What if they can tell who's infected?" "But what if they don't?" I'm with you till the end, Sunny.

I smile and drive past tanks and barricades in front of the camp's main gates, "Act natural." Soldiers march over one speaks, "Everyone step out the car." We all hop out and they search the car. "Ok, go on in." The gates open and we head in. Soldiers in hazmat suits wave Geiger Counters on us. "You're all clear. Head through." Sunny frowns, "I've got a bad feeling about this place."

Soldiers patrol the wall above as the doors open to reveal a crowd of people. They sit with their families, they cry and shout at each other. "You're right. Something's wrong here." Nell whispers, "Why are guards facing towards the inside?"

A man yells at a soldier, "Let me out, now!" "We can't do tha-" The man spurts water from his hands and it covers his head. The soldier flails for air and the others on the wall aim their guns at them. I yell, "Everybody down!" I pull Sunny to the ground and a hail of bullets fly at the two. She hugs me, then speakers boom, *Everyone on the ground!* Soldiers come in and drag the guy out. Sirens go off and I sigh, "They can't tell."
