We drive into camp as people panic against a wall of soldiers. “When will evacuations begin?!” “Take my kid!” I exhale as soldiers move towards a tent. I sneak in close and listen,

“What do you mean we can’t move?!” “Governor, our air support cannot get through to us, every military base is already stretched-“ “Why not?!” “Big birds.” He scoffs, “Big birds?! We have rockets, bullets!” “Against giant winged predators?” He breathes fast, “Ok, we evacuate on the ground.” “The demons have surrounded us. There’s no way out!” “We must do something or everyone dies!” I sigh.

“Is an evacuation happening?!” “Please! I don’t wanna die!” I push through the mob and walk back towards Mama. Blondie and her crew are there. The girl looks over to me with wide eyes. I wipe off the dust and grime and she hugs me. I muster the strength I have left to hug her back. “Hey blondie.” “Mama just told us.” I sigh as my heart aches again. She catches me, “It’s like my heart’s on the fritz again.” She walks me over and they all lay me down next to Mama.

“You’re all out of juice, Honey?” I try to relax, “For now.” She sighs, “Rest up.” I let my fingernails draw blood from my leathery palms, “I wasn’t enough, Mama.” “I know. It hurt my ears to watch that far away.” Dave sighs, “I hate this. We’re all sitting ducks.” The driver clinks against Dave’s bottle, “Might as well drink.” Mama sighs, “This is my grandson, Jon. The one who should introduce himself.” He laughs, “I didn’t know he was so nice, though. No offense.” I smile as the sun beats down, “None taken.”

Gunshots go off and I jump up. I peek inside my uniform, there’s a nice bruise. Civilians scatter and scream. Jon breaks our silence, “Did they just-“ I shake my head, “They just killed a desperate civilian.” Dave roars as blondie and Jon pull him back. “You wanna get killed too?!” “Dave, let it go!” Dave tears out their grip and sits down. I sigh and they all look my way, “Never forget.”
