Thalassophile

Thalassophile (noun): a lover of the sea

Breathing in the chilly, salty aura of the night, he raised his rough voice once again and began to sing.

A classic fisherman’s tune. The melody was as old as the sea itself, yet it was hummed by every young sailor on the waters.

He sang of his childhood; his birth on a ship and his apprenticeship to a pirate. He sang of his middle ages; his ambitious adventures and his beautiful wife who he tragically lost in a storm. He sang of his old days; drifting wistfully about in this little boat, catching whatever little fish that swam by.

On and on, he lifted his tunes and dropped his pitches, evenly and gracefully matching with the rise and fall of the waves beneath his feet.

After delivering his final ballad, he gently laid down on the wooden planks of his small boat. The rugged calluses under the back of his head felt familiar and comforting.

Soon, he will join the dark atmosphere and rest his ethereal gaze on the new, young sailors braving the sea.

The moon was lovely tonight.

Cradled by the ocean waves and blanketed by the starry sky, his soul fell into an eternal slumber and returned to the waves from which it came.
