Shoulders back, stomach in, feet kept exactly shoulder-width apart—she stood as straight as one of the silver fountain pens residing in the elegant pen holders on the dark oak table. The woman was determined to carry every task out to perfection, for there were no second chances for first impressions.

“Let’s get started with some clean-up, then.” The CEO mused, examining her work attire like a military inspector. “See that paper shredder over there?”

“Yes, sir.” Her voice rang loud and clear.

Before he even finished speaking, her heels were already clicking soundly across the marble floor. She positioned herself before the table of files, awaiting new orders.

The man nodded approvingly, and turned dramatically to the cityscape outside their expansive, spotless windows. “Enthusiasm is the first step to success. Now, the first report on the desk…”

With surgical precision, the woman snatched the stack of papers and slipped them through the paper shredder—even the machine was quiet and efficient as it turned the pages to ribbons.

“...should be my son’s first book report from middle school. He passed away due to cancer, but his whole life had been spent chasing diligently after his passion of becoming a lawyer. It’s my last memory of him. Please file it away safely and discard everything else.”

Her heart stopped dead in its tracks.
