Chapter 68 Meeting the kobolds

Chapter 68 Meeting the kobolds

I see a few generals and send them to get the rest. I head to the armory where all the weapons are set-up. It takes a few moments for all my generals to arrive. When Epieoth notices me his eyes widen in shock. He yells out.

“Who the hell did you form a pact with now!?”

“What do you mean?” I ask not understanding the question.

“Your aura… Changed again… DO YOU REALIZE HOW IMPOSSIBLE THAT IS!? Imagine only ever seeing three colors… A color for each person… Than all of a sudden you see someone with two colors. Zero other people have two colors. You get over that then he has mana mixed in with his aura… Which is almost as weird. You get over that, then his aura changes to purple… HOW!?”

“Well… You remember, how I had another set of memories in my head… I guess… I absorbed him...”

“…You are so weird… I still don't understand you at all. Well it looks like everyone else is here, we can go inside now.”

Heading inside I go in first. I want to see everyone's faces when they see the new equipment. The looks on all their faces… All of them have an amazed look on their faces. They've seen me making weapons, they knew I was making gear since I had to measure them. They didn't see anywhere near the full amount of equipment though. The sheer amount of equipment is incredible. All my effort, gathering materials, designing the equipment then finally making it paid off.

I give a brief description of each weapon to the new owner of it. Giving each person their gear finally getting to Trice. Her Gear mk2 needed to be explained more thoroughly. Each new formation will need to be taught to the Gear mk2. Also working in unison with the Gear mk2 would be impossible for anyone else besides me and Trice. The calculations it would take to configure each formation is too much for anyone else to handle.

Each person is now outfitted in their new gear. We head outside for some target practice. A lot of people who have never used throwing weapons are going to be practicing today with the shuriken launchers. It goes badly... Tons of minor injuries from the shurikens being launched wrong. Someone almost lost an eye but no permanent injuries.

Still, knowing how to protect themselves is never a bad thing. Even slowing down an approaching threat might save their lives. Once that's done, I take some time to practice magic with all my casters. What I seen from Leaf and Trice then from Blue and the all black mages can be trained for. Pulling all the elementalists, nature mages, aqua mages and black mages aside, I start the training.

“Anyone with control nature, I'm going to channel on this spot right here. Everyone else strengthen it with your elemental magic or nature magic.”

Forcing a control nature into the ground I start expanding it upwards… With everyone's help, the earth moves up twenty feet easily. Sloping downwards towards us. We just made an artificial cliff. With high ground on our side. Resulting in an easily fortified location in a matter of seconds with everyone working together. It makes sense that every other spell would have a similar effect if combined.

Trying it with the rest of the elements, focusing on water next we pick up the entire body of water we're using for the hot springs. Pulling water out of a tree causes it to shrivel up and die. Fire with the help of black mages and elementalists assisting results in a gigantic explosion… The size of the entire fortress could be engulfed in the flames… That isn't even with any fuel… What a dangerous attack. Finally casting the druid magic regrowth as a group. All the plants instantly grow to maturity… What a useful skill to know.

With this I feel my generals are now fully prepared for this war… My troops on the other hand… I still feel we might get overwhelmed by numbers and we can't train for that. The only way to fix it is to get more numbers for our side to fight with. I still need to get the kobolds as allies… I don't have Greed anymore… I'm not sure what I'll do to get them now… Maybe I should just have my generals take them over.

Well I might as well go conquer them now so I can start having ships built. Even fighting with the pirates now might deter them from attacking… Even if we can't beat them. I highly doubt that, the less their are, the easier it will be defending Shienta though.

Me and a small detachment of my army move out towards the kobolds. Bringing all my generals and around fifty mixed troops to back us up. Bringing the entire army would be a mistake. The white mage troops aren't nearly prepared enough for actual combat and bringing five hundred soldiers might scare the kobolds into attacking.

I want to get more practice leading smaller portions before I lead the entire army. This small number is a good amount for letting each of my generals lead as well. Trying to command an entire army of five hundred people just by myself would never work out well. Each general will lead a different set of units when the time comes and several generals will be fallback leaders just in case.

Making it to the kobolds, we go forwards with just the generals. I learned enough kobold to talk. The leader approaches us. Far different from the hobgoblin and gnoll leaders. He's an elderly lizard, covered in a necklace of shrunken skulls. He asks us a question.

“Which one of you is the leader.”

Stepping forwards I speak up.

“I am the leader.”

The few kobolds around start to snicker at this. Very similar to the gnolls. No one takes a child seriously. Should I kill one of them with my knives cannon to get them to fear me? It might fall to that but they also might attack us if I do. I think of something that might scare them. I call on the part of Greed that is still in my body for what I'm about to say next. I feel in times of bluffing, I will rely on the part of Greed that is in me now. Changing into dragon form, I yell.

“YOU DARE LAUGH AT ME! THIS BOY IS BUT A VESSEL FOR MY GREATNESS! ANYONE WHO APPOSES ME WILL BE DESTROYED!”

The kobolds all start shaking. I guess it worked perfectly since they haven't attacked. I still have to continue the ruse though.

“WHO IS YOUR LEADER!? I WILL FEAST UPON HIS FLESH BY THE END OF TONIGHT!”

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

The elder kobold, still shaking speaks up.

“Please, please don't eat me. I am the leader but I bestow my position onto you.”

Changing back into my normal human form. That was more effective than I thought it would be. Maybe from a combination of them being complete cowards and the fact that even small dragons could cause serious damage to the kobolds village. I still need to ask a few questions.

“Ok, so everyone line up! I need to ask for your names. Also which classes jobs and secret skills you have.”

Going through my routine I went through with the gnolls. I don't remember any of their names besides the old leader Shikki. They once again all sound similar. Lots of SH and K sounding names. Speaking of which, the leader was a new class… One I haven't heard of before. A witchdoctor… I'll have to have him teach it to me later on.

I get the kobolds and we head back to the fortress. They'll need to be integrated into the army so I have to think of classes for them. Since the leader is a mage, I'll make the seventy kobolds here mages for the army. I'll also use them to defend the water base I plan on making away from the main fortress.

Traveling back to the fortress, I found the main reason they followed me. It is because I was a dragon. They respect and revere the dragons more than any other creature. Almost to the point of worship. To serve under a dragon is the pride of any kobold. So I doubt they'll ever betray me. If they do… The consequences will outweigh the benefits most definitely.

Right before we make it back to the fortress I learned witchdoctor.

Class learned Witchdoctor passive skill Melded magic casting- Can combine multiple magic skills together to make them stronger

Level 1 Witchdoctor skill Disease locus- Summon a swarm of bugs that can add the diseased debuff to enemies

Wow! What a good skill for me to get. I already know a few spells I could combine to make them even better. First of all, is all my flame breath combined with every debuff I can use. The next would be the brand new spell I just got can be used the same way. Spreading all my debuffs to the enemies quickly.

Flaming tracer mana arrows would be strong too. After testing it seems like it only works with magic skills. I'll have to experiment more with this skill later. Combining skills with my breath makes the most sense. Not only is the breath instant, it covers a larger area and does more damage. It can also be strengthened with wind scrolls. The only drawback is lack of range to it. The mana cost is also very high, stacking magic skills.

We make it back to the fortress with my new addition to the army. I'll send another troop towards the ocean while I train these new troops. They have the portal with them. With new mages here, making more portals should be easier. I didn't send the other troops because I wasn't sure the kobolds were being completely honest.

Teaching the kobolds witchdoctor. Then teaching black mage and warlock as well. The diseased locus attack would work well with warlock skills. Leaving the last two classes up to each kobold. Once again for the hope that they unlock a new class like the gnolls did with beast rider. I doubt I will unlock another one. It seems like one special class per race.

After that I put them to basic training to increase their fatigue points and proficiency with weapons. Since they're casters, it doesn't make sense for them to use close range weapons. Meaning I either make them all staffs or crossbows… It will take too long to make staffs. The kobolds complained for a few moments from the exercise until I threatened their lives with my dragon form. It seems mean but they need the training and it will re-enforce me as the leader.

The kobolds have never seen a hot spring before. Most of them have taken a liking to it and every minute they aren't training, they're at the hot springs. Once I move them to the secondary base, I'll definitely have to make another one there too. It'll be a lot easier because it will be right off the coast of the ocean.

It seems like Darkclaw is also a big hit with the kobolds. Some have even become his underlings… A few of them have come begging me for mine and his blood. I guess dragons blood is a highly sought commodity for kobolds. They can get drunk off of dragons blood.

Speaking of which the kobolds know how to make beer. I'll trade my blood for their services as brewers. The first person who drank my blood seemed to get tipsy off of it. So my blood has enough dragon mixed in to fool them.

Finally the kobolds are surprisingly good diggers. Even without the gatherer job they can mine faster than the gnolls who have passed the rank up stage. I make a few of the younger kobolds who can't fight gatherers.

The army finally makes it to the shore. I bring some of the lumber workers and wood craftsmen through with me to help build the new base. We'll also need to build boats here soon. I have a few ideas to strengthen them when we get to making them.

Now that I can think practically about everything… I wish I would have bought some slaves when I was at the capital. Having a few dwarves, elves and gnomes around for certain jobs would have been a good idea. I might have also unlocked a few classes just having them around… Maybe I'll send a detachment to the capital with a portal so I can go buy some…

I decide to send Sock with his team to set up a portal near the capital. Having a quick station there will help later on. I'll have to hide it though. I can't have a back door to our fortress unguarded. Once they get it set up, maybe I'll make another fortress or buy some land inside the city to hide the portal. Yea, buying a house inside the middle quarter should be cheap enough. It would also help me recruit new members for the army at the adventurers guild.
