I was taken to the guard post. I already knew I was going to have to talk to Zeke. I might be forced to do drudge work for years or even be killed for what I did. This side of the world doesn't have jails. I couldn't forgive him for trying to steal Pokodo from me. What I did was justice in my eyes. Taking so much from me and still trying to take more. That is going beyond biting the hand that feeds.
Zeke's riffling through papers, completely bored with his job. After a few minutes he gets to me.
“So you killed someone did you? Care to explain.”
I go through the whole situation. How he previously tried to steal from me and I let him off, even giving him money. How I ended up teaching him and more people different classes. How even after that he tried to steal my pet who was healing injured people. This story sounds extremely made up, except for the talking animal beside me. He's about to talk when a man comes bursting through the door panting heavily.
The man is very overweight. To the point it looks like the only thing he does is eat food nonstop. Zeke's posture changes when he sees the man.
“Mayor what are you doing here?”
Taking a moment to catch his breath. The mysterious man finally speaks.
“You know why I'm here. This poor innocent young man has been accused of killing a person in cold blood. I think it was justified!”
Why is he defending me, he's the mayor. Shouldn't he be busier than this?
“My nephew here shouldn't be punished at all. In fact they should be rewarded for catching the criminal who's been stealing all over the city.”
I see the family resemblance with Geoffrey now. With that my freedom was claimed. We leave together towards his office while walking I ask.
“So uncle, why did you come to save me now?”
“Well its not just because you're family but also because you're making me look good.”
I asked him to explain.
“Well, when the mayors nephew runs around doing good. Saving the daughter of a high profile merchant. Fixing the slums and teaching its people how to provide for this city. Do you know how much money you'll save us in transport costs to bring food to the city? Even enchanting the blacksmiths forge made people happier. It all makes me look better because you are related to me. I was actually going to call you into the office soon but then I heard rumors that you killed someone.”
We make it to the office and the mayor has dozen's of workers in his office. All extremely attractive females are working there as assistants. One of them is a woman I saved from the goblin fortress. She appears to be in much better spirits now thankfully.
“Welcome back mayor.”
One of his assistance addresses him. Probably the head assistant.
“It seems you've brought the wonder boy with you.”
She gives me a big hug, continuing to speak.
“Thank you for all your hard work. The mayor will never be removed from office with you around to improve his approval rating. A few years ago, the only thing the mayor got letters for were death threats. Now he can walk down the streets and people will cheer for him.”
Well at least someone is taking advantage of all my kindness…
“We should give him a reward. Five gold coins should be enough.”
The mayor said. Five gold coins! That's enough to build a mansion the size of the one I lived in back in the village.
“You don't have to, I'm happy just helping people.”
“Nonsense this much is fine. With how much you've done for the city... I should be happy with this small amount.”
He's acting like it's not a lot of money but five gold is enough to retire on. I don't even know what I'd spend it on. Well I guess since he's giving it to me. I'll take it and find a use for it later. I take it and leave the office with how long it's been. Pokodo's mana should be high enough to heal more people. I'll hold off today since I'm carrying so much money.
I head back to the slums the next day. This time when guards see me they escort me. I guess I need protection now when I'm hear for fear of my pet being stolen. Pokodo does her regenerating. The line is now around fifty people. I can't even see the end.
“Ok so Pokodo can't heal more then ten of you at a time. So while we're waiting for her mana to recover. Does anyone want to learn a class?”
I hear from the back of the line. “Beast tamer!”…
I've thought about teaching beast tamer. It might end up with too many people dying, fighting monsters trying to tame them.
“If I teach you beast tamer, you have to promise to group with me if you learn it. So we can go get pets for everyone without people dying fighting monsters.”
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Going over the basics of beast tamer, ten people in the line learn it. They're also injured. Pokodo gets enough mana to use her regenerate again and keeps it up. The line slowly gets smaller and smaller.
“Anyone else want to try and learn a different class besides that one?”
This is the most shoddy classroom in the world.
I start teaching blue mage next. It's once again a very good secondary class. Filling many holes in a groups makeup, some blue mages become versatile enough to run dungeons by themselves. That very rarely happens though. A few more learn blue mage so I teach some blue mage skills like string attack and feral roar.
I don't think teaching a lot of people how to use poison spit would be a good idea so I don't. Pokodo casts another regenerate and a message pops up.
Secret White mage skill learned Regenerate- Able to fix injuries previously impossible to fix with other healing magic, can't regenerate lost limbs
With that I can start powering through the line. I start using it too, healing almost the whole line with replacing my mana with fatigue... Wait why are my fatigue points so low? Barely enough to sacrifice to restore my mana once. Quickly enough everyone besides the beast tamers are left. I wanted to do some other things today like make more wind scrolls. That's out of the question. At least I wont have to worry about the slums now. I think that and we start heading for the entrance in the slums. A familiar voice calls out behind me.
Side story: Kattie's point of view
We've made it back to Shienta. It hasn't been long since we put the group together but it might fall apart already because I want to stay behind with Leon. His knee was hit with a mace during the bandit attack and he can't use his leg at all. I know their's some magic that can heal injuries that even white magic can't.
Leon is willing to take the risk and have regrowth cast on him to become an adventurer again. I refuse to let him though. Leon going insane would kill me inside. He's a young man, around sixteen. We adventured together before Lances group was formed and he was the only one to stay once I started drinking. In the short time I've known Leon I started to fall in love with him. I'll do anything I can to make him happy.
It's been a week. The other party members have went to do some quests on the bulletin board again. If we don't find someone who can heal Leon soon the group will fall apart, like the last two groups I was in. Leon is starting to give up hope. That he'll be forced to use regrowth magic to walk again. Someone please save me from having to rely on such a dangerous method! Please someone answer my prayers!
What luck! Rumors have begun to circulate that someone in the slums is healing injuries incurable by white mages heal. It was someones pet that was doing the healing. I've never heard of something so ridiculous, it sounds untrue. I don't care because I want to believe it.
We're too late getting there that day. The pet was almost kidnapped by someone and the owner killed them in a single attack. We saw the corpse, it was a very intense wound. Like an explosion went off inside the perpetrators body. Whoever the pet owner is... He is an extremely dangerous person.
The next day I head back to the slums in the morning by myself. No one showed up but even so I go to the adventurers guild and grab Leon to take him just in case he shows up today.
Lance and Leaf decide to come with us. I guess the rumors go beyond just healing people. Fixing the slums with magic and teaching classes to people in under a day. This person is completely unbelievable and can't be real. Even so the curiosity of everyone gets the best of them.
Heading towards the slums takes a long time since Leon can't walk properly. Lance is willing to carry him but Leon is too proud to be carried by someone else.
It takes a few hours to get there but we eventually do. A few people are running around like crazy. Jumping and skipping all the while talking about how they're so happy they can walk or use both hands again. We're in luck it sounds like!
We make it inside but the person is already gone. My hopes are dashed, it feels like this might have been my last chance to fix Leon. Lance yells out towards someone.
