Chapter 617:
It was brutal and spine-chilling.
From afar, everyone watched as Santino and his men were forced out of Ontdale. The brutal end to his pleas left Melany trembling, her face pale as she turned and met Darrel’s cold gaze.
“I wasn’t aware you and my nephew were so… connected.”
Melany opened her mouth to respond, but Darrel raised a hand, silencing her. “As Mrs. Stevens mentioned, Mr. Stevens is currently detained in Muisvedo,” he continued. “Yet, here you both are, lingering around Sunset Hill with time to spare!” His gaze was filled with meaning, and his tone held a steely warning. “Maybe you should focus on collecting the funds needed. Muisvedo doesn’t exactly offer credit.”
Lindy’s face twisted, all traces of resistance gone.
It was clear Darrel meant one thing — they had overstayed their welcome!
“Mr. Brennan, we’re here to ask for help. Yes, it’s embarrassing, but it’s also to save a life,” Lindy said, her voice shaking with barely contained anger.
Muisvedo could spare Colton’s life, but there was going to be a price. And the longer this dragged on, the messier it was bound to get. She no longer cared about reputation or pride. Straightening herself, she looked Darrel in the eye and decided to bring up what Santino had done.
“Besides, your nephew promised he’d cover it for us!” A ripple of laughter spread through the crowd.
“Sure, Mrs. Stevens. As if you didn’t set Santino up for that!” one onlooker jeered.
“Exactly. And even if Santino said he’d pay, what’s that got to do with Mr. Brennan?” another chimed in. “I swear, some people have no shame!” someone muttered.
The crowd couldn’t resist taunting her. The mocking jabs were unrelenting.
Melany, who couldn’t stand being caught in the middle of such a scene, flushed with embarrassment and turned to her mother.
“Lindy, maybe we should just go…”
But Lindy had no intention of leaving. “Why should I leave?” She was thinking of Colton’s life hanging in the balance and the debts piling up. She wasn’t about to back down now! “It’s truly disgraceful when people don’t keep their promises.” Her eyes shifted from Darrel to Allison.
The rumors about Allison’s hundreds of millions had shocked Lindy, and now, having a moment to reconsider, she saw a new opportunity.
“Allison, since you’re so wealthy, tens of millions shouldn’t matter much to you. And from what I hear, you and Mr. Brennan have a bit of history. Why not help cover the debt?”
Her eyes glinted with unmistakable greed, as if weighing what could have been if only she’d insisted Colton not divorce Allison.
But Allison wasn’t about to indulge her. “Lindy, need I remind you? I don’t owe anyone’s debts. The underground casino already transferred the funds to me. And if you’re looking for someone to go after, try Mr. Vargas.” Allison spoke with a mocking tone.
