Chapter 351: Defending the Walls?

Chapter 351: Defending the Walls?

"Careful!" warned Mage Bright Light as the formation master carefully reached a critical part.

Annoyed, the formation master retorted, "I know, Mage Bright Light. Please leave and let me concentrate!"

Mage Bright Light was dissatisfied with the formation master's tone, but she ultimately left without causing trouble.

She and her team had infiltrated the city a few days ago. During their stay in the demonic city, they had been in contact with other teams. Fortunately, nothing major had happened, so she and her team continued their exploration.

Unfortunately, the relatively pure-blooded demons seemed to have looted all valuable items before they left. She and her team had discovered nothing in the last few days except for a safe.

The safe, hidden below the master bedroom of the Demon mayor, was protected by very powerful formations. It wasn't hidden; its location was exposed, and there were many scratches on it. Evidently, whoever tried to open it had failed, and Mage Bright Light completely understood why.

The formation protecting the safe was beyond the rest of the city's defenses; it was the work of a master. Even a demon king of one of the major demonic cities would have trouble setting up such a formation. It was incomprehensible how such an unbelievable formation appeared here.

Large forces have the luxury of choice. She and her group didn’t have anyone skilled enough to crack the formation, but the Human Civilization has many scientists who spend their entire lives studying formations. Knowing this, Mage Bright Light contacted headquarters and asked for reinforcements.

She and her team could break the formation with sheer power, but the safe's contents might be destroyed in the process. Items protected in such a manner were obviously very valuable, and it was best not to risk destroying them.

For all these reasons, she had been delayed for days, standing guard and waiting for the formation masters to finish their job.

Another day passed. The formation masters took turns working day and night.

Two more days passed, and the formation still hadn’t been cracked. Today, Master Wide Vision contacted her and said that the demons had finally attacked Hard Summer City. She couldn’t go; her current task was to protect the formation masters who were opening the safe. If something happened to them, it would be a massive blow to the entire Human Civilization. These formation masters were the best in human civilization.

The 13th Army guaranteed Mike's safety, which was also very important and Mage Bright Light's responsibility. With the 13th Army taking care of him, nothing could go wrong. Even though the 13th Army is not specialized in guarding VIPs, it is still capable enough to prevent anything bad from happening to him.

...

Master Wide Vision, who was on the walls, made a gesture and shouted, "Fire!"

More than a hundred mages, along with over two thousand ordinary people on the wall, all started to fire. The mages cast spells while the ordinary people fired crossbows. The demons below, with their weird body shapes, began to fall one by one. The arrows from the crossbows did not damage them much, but it was better than nothing.

Wide Vision initially did not plan on joining the fight on top of the walls. However, after much consideration and consulting with Mage Bright Light, he decided to change his strategy. There was still no chance of winning, but he planned on inflicting as much damage as possible. Of course, he wouldn’t risk his own life; he planned on running away as soon as the walls started to fall; the Elders appointed him as the general commander on the walls; the decision outraged a lot of people, but in the end, elders won, and everyone just accepted him as the commander.

A demon, four meters tall, with two massive one-meter-long thick horns and two big wings on its back, appeared. Behind it were about two hundred other demons of similar shape.

"Shoot them! Leave the ones on the ground alone; shoot the flying demons!" shouted Wide Vision, casting the "Sharp Windblade" spell.

The Windblade, over three meters long, rippled through the air at extreme speed, hitting the flying demon in the head and cleaving it in half as if cutting butter. The demon couldn’t defend at all. Even after cutting a demon in half, the Windblade continued, severely injuring the demon behind it.

To begin with, flying demons are weak in defense. Moreover, this first wave of demons had extremely muddled blood; they could not cast any spells and relied only on their strong physiques to fight. Faced with such demons, Master Wide Vision had no issue killing them.

All Adult demons can at least cast their bloodline spells; the keyword is 'adult'; in reality, most muddle-blooded demons are too dumb to awaken their bloodline spells for their entire lives; that means that technically, a lot of demons won't mature in their entire lives; even if they are 99 year old and one year away from dying, without being able to cast their bloodline spell, none are actually full mature demons; obviously, the demon army is using the city to scale down its size. This demonic army has too many lowest-rank muddle-blooded demons that are slowing it down; the reason it attacked this city may be that the leader of the demons thought it would be a waste to just kill off all muddle-blooded demons directly and decided to use them to at least destroy this city and kill a few humans; even demons like to be efficient.

The other mages on the wall also cast spells. A young mage with long black hair saw the great result of Wide Vision's spell and also cast "Windblade." A much smaller Windblade, thirty centimeters long, rippled through the air and hit a flying demon at a fast speed. It hit the target on its wing, injuring it and making it unsteady for a moment. However, the demon quickly adjusted and continued its flight.

The reason Wide Vision's spell worked so well was because he was strong, not because "Windblade" was so overpowered. The newbie mage learned this the hard way.

The crossbows mostly missed their target. Only some hit the flying demons, and even then, the arrows could barely penetrate the demon's skin. Only when hit in sensitive places, such as the eyes, did they manage to deal significant damage.

Even flying demons with poor defense are still demons. Their bodies are tough and powerful. Unless ballistae, which are basically massive crossbows, are used, ordinary crossbows have no effect. Fortunately, the castle had a lot of ballistae.

Three of the best shooters among the mortals manned a ballista and didn’t shoot until they were sure they would hit the target.

"Woosh!" A big arrow shot toward a demon, hitting it accurately in the chest. It penetrated deep, nearly reaching the demon's heart. With a scream, the demon fell to the ground. After a few moments, it stood up and started rushing to the wall again, but this time on the ground. Obviously, with its injury, it could no longer fly.

In truth, Wide Vision exaggerated when he said the people couldn’t help at all. Using war equipment like ballistae, they could kill ordinary muddle-blood demons.

Other ballistae also shot. In all, half the shots missed their target, while the other half managed to hit their target and drop a winged demon. Unfortunately for the defenders, there was time to reload. The winged demons were very close. If they land on the wall, it would be a massacre.

Fortunately, even though the wall's forcefield was nothing to brag about, it was still there. As soon as the demons got close, the red-colored forcefield shone brightly and struck the flying demons with red-colored lightning. The flying demons screamed with shrill voices and fell one by one.

After being assaulted by ballistae and mages, the initial two hundred flying demons were reduced to just over one hundred. Now, after being hit by the forcefield, the group shrank further by another fifty, reducing their numbers to barely over fifty. However, the wall's forcefield, being of low quality, dimmed significantly and showed signs of weakness. The demons started to push against the forcefield, nearly succeeding in pushing it back behind the wall. If they managed to do that, the wall would be left defenseless.

Obviously, Wide Vision wouldn’t allow this. He cast another spell, "Great Dragon Chain Lightning!" This spell was one of the most powerful he knew and could only be used once a week. Seeing the forcefield was about to be pushed away, he gritted his teeth and used it.

"Rumble!" Like real thunder, it hit the flying demons and bounced back and forth, delivering the full damage of the spell to them. One by one, demons started to fall. In total, twenty demons fell to this one spell from Wide Vision.

"Huh, huh," Wide Vision wiped the sweat from his forehead. Casting these powerful spells takes a toll on the body.

The other mages were not idle. They also cast all kinds of spells, managing to kill ten more flying demons. The ballistae also shot and hit five more demons. The red forcefield, which was beginning to regress, could finally stand its ground and push the flying demons back.

"Sharp Wind Blade!" cast Wide Vision, taking down another winged demon. The other mages continued to cast spells, and the mortals continued to shoot big arrows with ballistae. After a few seconds, the last flying demon fell.

The city managed to defeat over two hundred flying demons!

But before anyone could cheer, terrifying screams rang out. Everyone had been so occupied killing flying demons that some of the demons on the ground pushed the weakened forcefield and took over a portion of the walls.

"It's over," Wide Vision could only sigh. The battle was lost from the beginning; there was no hope of winning. Looking at the ground below, there were over a thousand demons, each over four meters tall and extremely intimidating. It must be noted that the demons currently attacking were those with the most muddled blood who couldn’t even cast spells. In this invading demon army, there were many demons who could cast spells. There was even a demon at seventy percent bloodline purity, which, in a one-on-one fight, could defeat Wide Vision in less than ten seconds. Even though Wide Vision had his own specialties, he was nowhere near as powerful as pure-blooded demons.

He immediately left his post on the wall and cast a spell on his body, "Boosted Athletic Body." Then, he directly jumped down the wall on the inside and ran toward the station as the screams behind him intensified. There was no more point in staying; it was over.

None of the people who remained would survive; it was destined from the beginning. Hard Summer City was unlucky enough to be on the way of a demonic army. They should have been smart and cleared the way. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t do that, and now they had to face the consequences.
