[49] To Escape Fate

“Continuing from last time, I’ve just left the goblin village to go on a simple trip to hunt monsters and see what new things have changed. Turns out, a lot! Being a Slime God-, well, not really a god, but a deity in a sense sure was different than being mortal!

For one, I’ve gotten like 500 Exp now, but I haven’t levelled up yet! There’s also the [Slimy Compendium], which…Ooh~, man, that’s great!”

P-Please…Let me-

“Anyways! After I’ve taken out two stray monsters, it’s time to head for my true objective-!”

Shut up. Please. The fourth wall has a giant hole on it. Just, stop.

“…Ugh, fine.”

Geez. Thank you.

*Ahem* Sorry about that. Diana’s still angry over the description from last chapter. As she said, she was currently heading for her true objective.

Deep inside, probably around the centre of this forest, Diana with her new Godly Senses, she could feel something menacing sprouting out from there. If she had to describe it…it’ll probably feel quite familiar to the inside of that giant withered tree.

Actually, take that back. It’s EXACTLY the same thing from that giant withered tree.

When she reached the meeting point, she saw a geyser of pure blackness, shooting out deadly vengeful spirits and miasma, or as the gods called it, Malevolence. The miasma went to work on the nature around it, tainting it and killing any that touched it, while the vengeful spirits sought out a new form to take for their own.

And, hey! There happens to be a good medium right-…right where?

Just as the vengeful spirits thought they had sensed something from behind the covers of the trees, when they checked, there was nothing there.

That’s because Diana just ran the other way as fast as she could. Being honest~, if she tried to take them on, she’ll just get corrupted and turn into an evil entity! And no one wants that, ey? Well, unless it comes with cool evil lightning powers.

Currently, having been reborn to this world, she was too weak to fight those things. In fact, in terms of raw power, Anna could probably wrestle her to the ground no problem, if she wasn’t using her slime powers of course.

But, that geyser wasn’t the only one currently sprouting out bad stuff. All around the world, places where Oldruin destroyed kingdoms and countries filled with dread and malice, all of it was coming to strike back.

Oldruin? He’s just having a casual chat with Laila, with the latter trying to prove that his actions were terrible, while the former was nonchalantly sipping some nice hot tea, a warm contrast to the unending snowstorm outside.

The only reason he didn’t see this as a bad thing, was because monsters and ‘Monster Races’ would be fine from this outbreak of vengeful human souls. The only thing capable of being taken over are humans and ethereal beings like Crystal and Diana.

He, who is not a human(obviously) will not be affected by this. Nor will Laila be. But everyone else, Diana, Crystal, Rei, Anna, and Ilgua will all be victims to this. Gaz is safe, cause he’s an ogre and all.

………………

“Holy sh*t…W-What…the f*ck’s that!?”

Meanwhile, several kilometres away from the forest, things were…getting worse.

After they’ve killed the f*cker that sacrificed Diana to that magic of his, they stifled their tears and headed back, their heads hung low and their spirits crushed.

But what made it even worse, was that, as they were walking, Ilgua noticed something, something…huge. The skies were unruly, the winds were fighting, and the earth itself seems to be screaming.

This was not any natural cause, this was…something else.

Then, they saw it, a pillar of darkness that rose from the ground metres away from them. It rose so tall that it broke through the clouds. It was so dark that not even the shadows could match it. It was so powerful, that the Earth itself seems to be at its command.

Gaz couldn’t help but let several curse words fly out of his mouth.

Forget that bald man, forget Ilgua’s master, forget Oldruin, that ‘thing’, that was the strongest thing to have ever existed.

Oldruin sought to destroy all the bugs of humanity. But humans were strong. Physically they might not, but the fact that they had consciousness and capabilities to grow beyond their limits were enough to make even the gods consider their actions.

Due to the mass of overflowing miasma from all the malevolence, the tree that withheld all life in this world was breaking down.

Many have claimed that the ‘end of the world’ was coming soon, Ilgua never believed in those words a single bit. But now…holy hell was the world coming to an end.

The Extinction, has begun

………………….

Wooh~! Okay! That got dark reeeal fast, ey?

But, that was serious, nothing could be done now, the world will be cleansed clean from all the destruction. Whether or not the world could be rebuild, that’s a question no man or god could answer on their own.

Hell was about to descend on Earth. Monsters of all kinds were ready to run rampant. The storm of nature was ready to be unleased on a moment’s notice.

Humans? Yeah, they’re doomed.

But! On the bright side…well…there’s not really one. Well, maybe the fact that humans will be eradicated from this planet would be a good thing for many. They’re the main targets of this destruction after all.

Normally, Diana would be having nightmares and heart attacks from that thought, but…She felt nothing. Perhaps, some way through her endeavour of reading and living though all those human lives back in that void, a part of her broke.

There’s also the fact that she’s a deity now. Humans were no longer of her concerns. The only thing she should care about now was for her own well-being, and the safety of her friends and followers. Well, the gods said so at least.

To this new form of Diana, humans were just another form of monsters. They lived, they had hopes and dreams, and they faced death, reaching their dreams or not. Now that she wasn’t biased from being human herself, humans are just…humans. Not more, not less.

Right now, Diana was just having a calm fruity snack she pulled out from the tree tops. All this running was making her hungry.

While she’s at it, she was also trying to gain her [Slime Magic] back, since it’s an insanely crucial part of her battle prowess. All she was doing was turning her unused left arm into her slime form and pulling out a piece of herself, controlling it and flying it around the place.

It worked the last time she did this, so it should work now! (Hopefully)

“*Nom* Uh…That fruit was poisonous…”

As she said, that fruit she ate was poisonous-, well most of this forest’s life form was poisonous in the first place. She’s a god now though! So something as petty as poison was not going to stop her from having her fun!

Hopping up, she hummed softly as she took a glance at her character sheet, pouting as she noticed that her [Slime Magic] was not yet regained. But! She had a loooot of time anyways, so it’ll be fine-

“Ah!”

Just as she thought that, another thought came to flash. Since all humans were going to die now…How about Ilgua and Anna!? Will they be killed too!?

When that thought came into her head, she grimaced. There was no way in hell she was letting her friends die like that!...But…How was she supposed to stop something so inevitable?

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

She pondered that question for a while, still playing around with a piece of her slimy self as she made the ball shift its shape multiple times. If she was supposed to help a human avoid something that would destroy all humans, what could she do?

She couldn’t come up with a clear answer. There were several possibilities of trying to avoid this fate, but in the end, she didn’t even know how to do them, let alone what the chances of these methods actually working as intended.

“Agh!! If only she could just switch races already!!”

It was frustrating for her, knowing that it was her that-…wait…change, races?

Change…Change…Change…Change!

“Aha~! I have an idea!!”

*Grrrrrr*

“Ah. Hello there wolfie~, now, [Slime Cannon]!”

With the nearby wolf shot down quite easily, Diana returned back to the topic of discussion.

Now, some might not remember them, but recall those two monsters back in the world of gods? You know, the giant lava spider and the creepy tentacle monster thingy? Yeah, those that Diana and Crystal had to run away from.

If she’s not wrong…they were…the sentinels of the god of death and the god of…magma? Honestly, she kinda forgot, but those monsters were sentinels, i.e. the familiars of the gods!

Perhaps! Perhaps. If Anna was made into her sentinel, she could maybe avoid this human consuming devestation! But…No, she couldn’t have any second thoughts. The time was quickly coming, and she needed to do this fast!

So, after finally disposing of that very dazed wolf she shot out earlier, she happily took some more Exp and Skill Points before running back towards the goblin village.

Past the dormant trees and flowers, past the nearby monsters, past the occasional vengeful spirits, and past all the insanity that was going on around her, she ran. Faster and faster, more determined than ever.

Finally, after an amazing sprint(which wasn’t really all that fast due to her reduced speed stat), she burst out from the enclosed forest and into the open, where all the goblins joined by Anna stared at her with complete confusion.

“Elder!”

“Yes, Slime Que-“

“Set up a strong magicb barrier around the village! Bad stuff’s coming!”

The elder questioned what the slime girl meant by ‘bad stuff’, but he trusted her nonetheless. And besides, this storm hasn’t been ending, and it doesn’t seem like it’ll be ending any time soon.

As he was the only mage in this village, he immediately got to work, helped by his fellow students to place several totems carved out of wood around the village’s vicinity.

“M-Miss Diana? What’s wrong?”

Everything was going just a tad bit too fast for the passive village girl. She had just woken up this morning shouting to her saviour, and now Diana’s back with a worried and somewhat excited look on her face.

“Invoke the barrier!”

“““Yes elder!”””

The elder went to work on the gears, and the totem shined with a bright purple light. The six placed totems shot out purple beams of light into the clouds, and formed a hexagonal shaped barrier around the village, protecting it from all things…except maybe up.

They were now safe, but this wouldn’t last for long. She needed to do it now!

But, first.

“Anna.”

“Y-Yes…?” Anna noticed it, a change in tone for the usually bubbly and happy Diana. Her eyes shone with the wisdom gained from countless years of watching other people’s lives.

“Answer me this. Do you hate humans?”

“H-Huh? I-I…”

Hate. It was a strong word, perhaps appropriate, but a strong word nevertheless. To say she hated humans, the beings that killed her parents and burned her village down, would it be too much?

If she hated humans, she’d also be hating herself wouldn’t she? Did that even mattered however? In her most honest opinion, races don’t really have much as to anything. Right now, her friends consisted of a very strong slime girl, a phantom weapon, a ghoul, and many goblins.

She also had many friends that were human as well. And while they may have died due to the fire, they still lived on in her heart.

So, with her answer found, she answered.

“I…I don’t. But I don’t like them either.”

Her voice was resolute, her eyes staring back at her with no less determination than hers. A big goody smile was plastered all over her face, now having complete faith that this would work, one way or another!

Alright, time to apply some of that wisdom she got! Gotta look all divine and stuff!

“Anna.”

“Y-Yes…?”

The sudden change in tone and volume spooked her a bit, since she swore she even heard some echoes from her words, but she shook off that initial feeling and returned her eyes towards her saviour, determined, but also afraid of what was truly going on.

“The floodgates of hell have been broken, and the vengeful spirits of the past has come to destroy all of humanity. To escape-“

“Destroy all humanity!?”

“…Ahem. To escape this fate, I offer you, as the Slime God Diana, become my familiar, and I shall free you from this eminent destruction.”

Casting aside that sudden interruption from Anna there, it seems her words had gotten across, if slightly jumbled up from Anna’s sudden spike of shock and fear.

After all, ‘floodgates of hell’? ‘Destroy all of humanity’? ‘Slime God Diana’!? What was with all this sudden drop of information!? Anna’s morning brain couldn’t handle this information overload!

“A-Anna?”

“Muuuuuuuu…”

U-Umm…I-Is this…No, maybe it’s just her weaboo side that’s coming into play. But…Is…Is smoke coming out of her ears?

…That aside, she’ll…give time for Anna to fix herself. Right now, she looks like a lost kitten that just saw its owner throw her out of the window.

Well, the ‘floodgates of hell’ and the ‘destroy all humanity’ part made some sense if she pitted them together, but ‘Slime God Diana’!? When did Diana become a god!? Was she lying then when she said she was a slime queen?

“Anna…?”

“Hyua!? I-I’m still thinking, m-miss Diana! P-Please waaiit!!”

Somehow she could just imagine Anna with cat ears and a tail, and just whimpering softly as she tried to sort out everything she just learnt. Somehow she just had the desire to pet her on the head.

Actually…Yeah, maybe that’ll work!

‘What’ll work? You’ll have to wait to find out~’

Oi. My lines.

Anyways, after some time, and after seeing that there were many eager vengeful spirits trying to break through the barrier to eat her alive, Anna was forced to come up with a quick conclusion to her dilemma, and this was her answer.

“I-I…I’ll do it!”

She said it was less conviction than she wanted, but her message has gotten across. Seeing her resolution, Diana smiled happily and created a large jelly of slime, enough to hold an entire human being inside!

“Step inside, and I’ll do the rest! Oh, and don’t worry! I’ll be keeping you alive too~!”

With a gulp, she wiped off some sweat from her forehead and walked into the gooey substance, feeling it absorb her inside as she was dragged into the slime, keeping her inside like a mosquito inside an amber.

Slowly, she felt sleepy, and the rest of the world faded around her.

On that day, every human on the planet died.

There were no survivors.

…………………

What?

You thought there would be something else here?

Who do you think you are, deciding everything on your own? I’m the narrator here, the master. I control everything.

Now now, don’t go to the comments already and start typing every single thing you have on your mind juuuust yet, kay~? I have…some interesting information.

I ask you this, do you think you’re actually alive, or are you just in a simulation? It’s a hard question isn’t it, won’t be as easy to answer like in the matrix eh? Think about it, think real hard about it.

Now, I want to tell you a story, a story about a girl named Diana.

Well, she was previously a guy, called Davin. He’s a NEET, a jackass, but ultimately a kind person and hates cheaters and backstabbers. His favourite types of games were FPS games and RPGs.

He also happened to like anything Japan related. Anime, manga, light novels, all of that media he consumes on a daily basis.

But then, one day, as he was lamenting over his drunkard mother downstairs, he was given a chance to go to another world, and being the stuck up NEET he is, he immediately took the offer, despite having to sacrifice everything, including his gender.

She lived her life in this new world, got herself crowned as a Slime Queen, got herself a temporary friend, before she received her first true friend, Crystal.

Then, things rolled even faster.

She met up with Rei, a ghoul with a like of cooking and eating. They went into Tartarus, got their asses kicked several times, Diana died, revived, and so on. They escaped Tartarus, managed to make their way away from a death god, yatta yatta.

They met with Anna, and then Ilgua, and then she met up on her own with a fellow Earthling Gaz, and then sh*t went to the fan.

Diana is sacrificed and was sent to the world of spirits and gods. Crystal, being the only one capable to save her, went in. But, alas, in the end, without the silver coin she was given, Diana was unable to pass through into the other side.

And then, she was dragged into the abyss.

Years after years, eternities after eternities, she spent watching and living the lives of the other people who had been killed and placed into this dark abyss. Slowly, as the stories came to a close one by one, her body broke down, piece by piece, cell by cell. Until finally, she was no more.

There in heaven, she realised her love for her friends, and pleaded to return. The gods heard her call, and they gave her a chance.

That’s what I’ve been telling you these last 2 chapters, wasn’t it?

Sorry to say, it won’t be that easy.

“Huah!?”

It was then, that Diana finally woke up from that simulation. Her body arched back in pain as she felt her system break down once more.

The forest she was in, the village she was staying in, the goblins surrounding her, the slime that had Anna inside, they were all gone.

Slowly, she slowed down her breathing, trying to calm herself from the numbing pain. Her naked body touched against the clean white floor, one that stretched out into the nothingness. There were no walls, no ceiling, no floor, just, white.

Sighing, she looked down upon herself, seeing the many purple cracks spreading all across her body. She poked them, and she winced as more pain coursed through her body.

Honestly, while that sudden fourth wall break was weird enough, the fact that she was granted a chance to return back to the world was absolutely crazy! I mean, she didn’t have Slimey to revive her again after all.

Of course, it wouldn’t be that easy. Unlike what I explained at the end of the last chapter, getting to be a god without any work is just pure plot armour. It’s dumb.

However, the price to pay was high.

Remove her empathy and sympathy for humans and all living beings, and she could have a slither of a chance to become a god.

But…Was that what she truly wanted?

“Hah…”

Another sigh leaked out from her lips, wincing slightly as even moving her lips caused her immense pain. Luckily, she had an entire eternity to spend, so healing herself up before another go shouldn’t be too hard.

Whether or not this was the correct thing or not, she’ll become a god, and then come back to her friends. She’ll do it! After all, her promise with Rei to cook up some nice food still existed, yeah?

If she returns, there was no doubt she would not be Diana anymore. She would just be…a god. She may be Diana in name, but not Diana in soul. And that was what truly terrified her. If she wasn’t herself when she came back, would her efforts even matter then?

…She didn’t know.

But, for now, she’ll just continue what she’s been doing for an entire eternity. Maybe, she’d find the answer in the midst of it, who knows?

‘Alright! Time to go in!’

With that, she closed her eyes, and began the process once more.
