Summer vacation drew near as the weather grew hotter.
However, one major event loomed before the summer break–the final exams.
Miranda had taken seven core courses for this semester; four mandatory courses and three electives.
Originally, Madison only planned to take one elective. However, after seeing Miranda take three electives, she gritted her teeth and signed up for the same courses.
Sebastian had tried to talk her out of it. “Taking seven coumes and a few general education courses might be too much for you.”
But Madison wouldn’t listen. “If Miranda can handle it, so can I!” she had insisted.
Sebastian had no choice but to follow her lead.
As it turned out, impulsive decisions were only satisfying in the moment, and reality set in whent classes started. In the end, the only one who couldn’t handle the workload was Madison!
Attending lectures wasn’t too bad. She just had to show up on time, sit down, and pay attention. The real struggle came during the finals. She had seven core courses and four general education courses, totalling 11 subjects to
review.
“Seb, just end me now!” Madison leaned back and covered her face with a book. She did look like a corpse, albeit a chubby one.
Sebastian pulled the book off her face and ruffled her hair. I wouldn’t be able to do that.”
Madison’s heart skipped a beat, and she sat up straight. “No, I need to pull myself together!”
“Alright, let’s study together.”
“By the way, how many subjects have you reviewed?”
“I’m nearly done with the core courses.”
“What? You’ve reviewed all seven already?” Madison’s voice almost cracked.
“Yeah.”
She was rendered speechless.
By mid–July, finals arrived as scheduled. The exams lasted an entire week.
The moment Madison walked out of the exam hall, it felt like a thousand–pound weight had been lifted off her shoulders. “It’s finally over… Seb, let’s celebrate with a big meal!”
“Alright,” Sebastian replied with a doting smile.
Madison looked around. “Huh? Where’s Miranda? Why didn’t I see her come out?”
“She handed in her paper early and left,” Sebastian explained.
“Why didn’t I notice? Weren’t we in the same exam hall?”
“Maybe you were too focused on the questions?”
Madison nodded. “That makes sense…”
Then, she realized something.
“So, how did you notice? Were you not focused on the questions?
“I had already finished my paper by then, so I had nothing else to do…”
“Alright, that’s enough.”
She was the only person who ran out of time!
“Why didn’t you hand in your paper early?” Madison asked.
“I was waiting for you,” he said matter–of–factly.
Madison grinned, and they left the school gates hand–in–hand.
At that moment, a tall woman with a sweet smile came over to greet Sebastian, “Hi, Sebastian….
He nodded slightly. “What’s the matter?”
The woman was Hazel Todd. She explained, “Today’s the last exam, right? Summer vacation starts after this, and the Social Work Club is organizing a rural survey trip for five days. Would you like to sign up? There are only two spots left; one…“‘
She was about to say, “One for me and one for you,” when Sebastian turned to look at Madison.
“Do you want to go?” he asked.
Madison thought about the offer to go on a rural survey trip and shook her head. “No. I’m planning to go home to see my dad and then spend a few days in Echo Bay. I’ll be back around August 10th, and after that, I’ll be in the lab most of the time.”
Sebastian nodded. “Alright, I’ll go with you.”
“Great!” Madison smiled, her eyes crinkling with happiness
Sebastian turned back to Hazel and said, “Sorry, I don’t have the time.”
Hazel’s gaze finally landed on Madison. She hadn’t acknowledged her presence from the moment she started talking to Sebastian. When she finally did, itwas as if she was looking right through her.
She tried to persuade him. “I see… I heard participating in this activity can earn you conduct points and give you an edge when applying for national scholarships. It’d be a shame to miss out.”
