Chapter 216

Elyra sat at the edge of the creek near the cabin, her knees pulled to her chest. The water rushed past her feet, its coolness grounding her in the midst of her swirling thoughts.

She hadn't been able to shake the image of Dain standing over the bear, his eyes wild, his movements impossibly strong and fast. It wasn't normal. None of what they could do was normal.

Her senses seemed sharper lately-she could hear the distant call of a bird, the rustling of leaves miles away. The moonlight felt like a balm on her skin, soothing and invigorating her all at once. She glanced at her reflection in the water, her silver hair gleaming like molten light. Who am I?noveldrama

"You've been out here all morning," Matthew's voice called from behind her.

Elyra turned, watching him approach with his usual calm demeanor, but something in her chest tightened. She rose to her feet, her fists clenching at her sides.

"What aren't you telling us?" she asked abruptly.

Matthew blinked, taken aback. "What are you talking about?"

"Dain and I... we're not normal," she said, her voice trembling with both anger and fear. "You've seen it. The way we heal, the way he fought that bear-it's not human. And you're telling me you don't know anything about where we came from?" Matthew's expression darkened, his lips pressing into a thin line. "I told you everything I know," he said carefully.

"I don't believe you," Elyra shot back. "You've always avoided the question. You must have found something-something that explains why we're like this."

Matthew's shoulders sagged, and for a moment, Elyra thought he might admit to more. But then he shook his head. "I found you in the woods. That's all there is to it."

The words felt like a slap. Elyra stared at him, her golden eyes glistening with frustration. "If you're lying to protect us, you're only making it worse," she said quietly before turning and walking back toward the cabin. Matthew stood there for a long time, the weight of her words pressing on him like a storm cloud. Elyra's growing suspicion wasn't unfounded, but how could he explain something he didn't fully understand himself?

Inside the cabin, Dain sat on the couch, his arms crossed as he stared at the fire. He looked up as Elyra entered, his expression softening slightly. "You okay?"

"No," Elyra admitted, sitting beside him. "I feel like... like something's wrong. Like there's something big we don't know."

Dain didn't respond immediately. Instead, he placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch grounding her. "We'll figure it out," he said firmly.

Elyra wanted to believe him, but the unease gnawing at her wouldn't let go. Something was unraveling and she feared the truth would change everything.
