The grove they found was quiet and bathed in silvery moonlight, offering a rare moment of peace. Dain paced restlessly while Elyra sat against a tree, her knees drawn to her chest. "You've been quiet," Dain said, his voice softer than usual.
Elyra avoided his gaze, her fingers nervously twisting her pendant. "I'm just... tired."
"That's not it," Dain said firmly. He knelt in front of her, his orange eyes searching hers. "You're scared. Talk to me, Elyra."
She shook her head, but the tears in her eyes betrayed her. "I don't know if I can trust what's happening to me," she admitted, her voice trembling. "I don't know if I can trust myself."
The tears she had been holding back spilled over. For a moment, he simply held her hands, his presence a quiet reassurance.
Later that night, as they explored the grove, Elyra stumbled upon a cluster of ancient stones etched with inscriptions. The runes glowed faintly under her touch, their energy sparking memories she couldn't fully grasp. "What does it say?" Dain asked, stepping closer.
Elyra ran her fingers over the symbols, her voice soft as she translated. "It's about a bloodline... a powerful one, tied to the Celestial Pact. A family destined to protect the balance of this world."
Her breath caught as she read further, her eyes widening. "Dain, we're not related," she whispered.
The revelation hung between them, breaking the unspoken barrier that had always been there. Dain's eyes searched hers, a storm of emotions crossing his face.
"Are you sure?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Elyra nodded, her heart racing. "It's here. Written in stone. We were raised together, but... we're not bound by blood."
The weight of the truth settled heavily on them both, a mixture of relief, confusion, and something deeper.
Dain reached for her hand, his touch hesitant. "What does this mean for us?"
Elyra shook her head, unable to answer. Her feelings for Dain, always buried under layers of guilt and denial, now threatened to surface. But before either of them could speak, the sound of distant howls pierced the air, cutting through the stillness like a blade. "They've found us," Dain said, his voice sharp with urgency. "We need to move. Now."
