Journalists, governors and mayors were all seated before the monument as Tracy and the advisors were running up the prep. The members of the Presidential Guard were making sure everything was in order. The Monument of Marvelia was a statue of the First Preseident with an axe in hand. A country founded in blood, sweat and tears. Mainly blood though.
"Where is the President?" As that question was posed, they watched as a horror appear in front of the statue. The first thing the snarling amalgamation did was go after Tracy. As people began to panic, the cracking gunfire pierced through the horror's appendages. Blowing them off as they see Raven appear with his katana and knife. Lacerating the horror's body and then proceeding to slash it in half. Blades glistened from the fresh kill, blood splashing on his VS suit as he removed the faceplate.
"Morning. Sorry I was out clearing a void nearby since it was getting bigger. Thank you all for coming. So let's get this part over with." Raven said as everyone stood up to hear Raven answer the oath.
"I, Raven Ashenworth swear to uphold the laws, to protect our nation and to ensure that our nation will prosper in my time as President..." Continuing on with his right hand raised. Tension was building as the oath was over, with Raven turning to the ones present.
"I'm only keeping this seat warm. But don't expect me to be a pushover. That's all. I told them not to be so fancy. The rest of this time is used for all of you to ask me any further questions." Audience began raising their hands.
"Yes. We'll start with the journalist from Veratio News Daily."
"Mr President! Is it true that you brutalized the people who invaded your house?"
"Yes, I did. I came back home, having a nice smoke when they decided to step in. So I grabbed a knife and a pistol. Defended myself. When in situations of kill or be killed. I'd rather make it quick. So then I called the police to handle it. Next question."
"What is your rationale behind going into voids? Aren't you concerned that citizens will feel insecure because their president is going into them?"
"I'm going in to test prototype equipment. So I can give feedback before we have it made for the Void Agency's Agents. I'm only going into voids by the capital. The other areas will be managed by the Void Agency to keep the void in check. Next question."
"When you enter the void, are you always going at it alone?"
"Yeah. Besides I'm doing all of my work from within the Void. The number of voids have been reduced so I can head back to the office. Today, after I get cleaned up." More questions were being asked with Raven just giving brutally honest answers. Only confidence in his eyes. Answers that were straight to the point. Even those who were present could feel the air stir. One question was raised that brought forth an unnerving answer.
"Mister President... Are you... Not sound of mind?"
"Oh I am very much sane but at the same time. I'm not. Being in the void, seeing how they treat us like we're their prey. It fueled my rage. So that's why I keep going into voids. The sight of the late president's corpse lingered in my mind. I couldn't go to the funeral because I had so much paperwork. These days, going into the void helps me with my grief. I can lash out in my anger. I owe her a lot. When my charges came, the President helped me with evidence to clear my name. She always valued freedom and liberty. Watching her die being eaten? That's enough to push me into the void. Besides. It's easier for me to just want them dead." They heard a snarl as a horror leaped in front of Raven, where they see him grab it by the throat. A grin on his face as he gouged the eyes out one by one.
Pulling out the knife to slash off the appendages, then kicking the horror down as he blasted its head off with a revolver.
"Valors." Fenris, Vesper, Regal and Warcrest appeared by his side.
"Did a void crack?"
"Yeah. It's about 50 blocks from here. Seems like a big one. What's the plan?" Warcrest spoke as he readied his light machine gun, racking the bolt.
"Vesper. Command us. Willers, handle the rest of this. Void Agents keep the area safe!"
"Let's move out Valor!" The five of them leaped into the air as the boosters opened up, zooming to the location. Arriving to the location as horrors began to squirm around.
"Scorpio! You're on sniping duty! Keep those things off the civilians! Fenris, with me! We're going in to get their attention. Regal work with the other agents to keep people safe! Warcrest! Bulldoze them!" They moved accordingly with Raven firing at the horrors with his sniper rifle. A 15 round card magazine, blasting away as recoil kicked up the dust of the rooftop. A single shot tore through the body part of a horror, another shot to end it.
Fenris used his blades to carve through the horrors that were squirming all around. For once the cameras showed how the horrors were running away in fear. It was a sight that had captured the eyes of those who were present, cameras zoomed in on Raven who leaped down with his blade. Moving with Fenris as the duo tore through the horrors that were coming out of the crack. Warcrest laying down suppressive fire to keep the horrors in a certain area. Within the reach of the two while Vesper was cleaning up targets with his submachine guns.
The live recording was being streamed to the citizens. Watching Raven rip a horror's limb off, grabbing its mouth. Using the powers of the VS suit to strengthen his body to rip it apart. Hearing the flesh tear as the eyes began to panic. Nothing was going to stop Raven. Drawing out the knife as he zoomed into the crack.
"Scorpio will handle the crack! The rest of us clear out the enemies!" Watching the crack get bigger. The Valors reloaded their weapons as the others kept their eye on the crack that was getting bigger. A large hand emerged, followed by a gigantic amalgamation of limbs. Instead of a roar they heard a whimper.
"Pl-ease... Merc-" They heard its voice. Seeing limbs flying out of the crack. Freshly cut chunks that landed in front of the Valors with Vesper just glancing at the huge portions. Tentacles. Appendages. Limbs. Heads. Gigantic eyeballs. Huge chunks of flesh. Mouths. Teeth. Everything was flying out of the crack. Seeing a horror crawling out, then a sickle with chains wrapping around the horror's body. Pulling the horror back in. Seeing the horror claw its way to the ground as it was being pulled back into the crack.
Warcrest had a cigar lit up. Regal headed to a cozy coffee shop to get some drinks. Calm within the chaos, flesh and body parts searching for a safe place to land. Crashing to the asphalt as the crack's size began to show signs of wear. As anxiety built up within those who were present. A crack that was getting bigger was a sign that things weren't doing well in there. An even larger horror began to take shape. Only for it to fall to the ground with its body parts served up with the ground being the plate.
"Yeah, twerp's pissed."
"I cannot blame him for being angry. He did say he hated horrors more than anything."
"Would you say he's angry, Regal?"
"No, Fenris. I believe the word here is livid."
"He's more than livid, Regal. It looks as if he found everything and everyone he hated in there."
The crack faded away, with many wondering where Raven was. Hearing a blade cut through flesh, seeing Raven crawl out the hole he made as the horror's body. Wriggling his way out like a worm as he took off his face plate. Placing the katana on his back as the magnets stuck to them. Finding Regal with cups of drinks in his hand. Lazily making his way towards them as Raven grabbed an iced mocha.
"How many were there?"
"Not enough for me. Had about 50 huge ones though. Weapons work great. Just need to do some tweaks to it. I'll explain later." Raven downed his mocha, then stretching his limbs. To many, it seemed as if Raven had just went for a stretch. He was someone who didn't seem to be bothered by all the bloodshed. Rather, Raven seemed to reveled within the madness. The meaning of his sane but insane comment plagued the minds of all the onlookers. Seeing how a David had felled Goliaths. Droplets of red staining the ground as cameras continued recording Raven with the four Valors.
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
Seeing them having a relaxed conversation as Void Agents got to work in clearing the corpses and Raven passing them void crystals by the dozens. Void Agents who saw the massive corpses felt fear and admiration towards their President. The man who survived a void and the man who had turned to clearing void cracks as if it was just a game to him. The VS suit glimmered by bits of flesh and blood as Raven lit a cigar to his lips.
Taking a whiff as his gaze met with the Void Agents who avoided it, a sensation that haunted their instincts. Their very nerves and human instincts screamed, despite Raven doing absolutely nothing. He merely greeted them and thanked them for their work. Even if that gratitude seemed harmless. It did not dissipate the fear within their veins.
"Anymore cracks?"
"None, Mister President!" An agent reported as Raven turned to the Valors. The weekend was coming so they should do something. Tracy arrived with the advisors, which also included the mayor and governor of the capital.
"Mister President!"
"Oh, Willers. What time is it?"
"It's only 12 in the afternoon, sir." Raven turned to the Valors who thought of the same thing.
"Then let's go have lunch. Know any good places?"
"There's a high class restaurant that's nearby..."
"We'll pass on anything high class. Let's talk local specialties."
"There is a shop of fried chicken that's I frequent." Governor Izen mentioned it, gesturing to the shop nearby. 'Garm's Fried Chicken'.
"Fried chicken sounds fun. It has been quite a while."
"Willers can you order a portion for five of us? We'll be eating outside. Can't dirty the restaurant with our gear. Get some food for the agents too. Charge them to my card."
"Yes, Mister President." The sight of the 5 of them sitting by curb on the road as it was being cleared was snapped by onlookers and journalists. Their helmets were taken off, seemingly letting their hair and faces feel the wind grace their exposed bodies. Hair swaying like branches greeted by the wind. When their food arrived, they were eating by the curb peacefully.
"Damn. This is real good. It's got a crunch, chicken still juicy... Man, what is this batter?"
"I believe they used a spice mix for this. I do taste peppers but words escape to what sort of peppers they are."
"Just enjoy the food, Regal. Stop overanalyzing things." Fenris grumbled as he hounded his food while Vesper just ate the fried chicken with one simple bite. Starting from the top, letting his teeth pull everything out. Only the bone and bits of batter remained. Taking their time to savor their meal because it was their only peace for the moment.
"What? I grew up around fried chicken. This is the way my family ate drumsticks." Slurping on their carbonated drinks to finish their meal. Checking the clock.
"1.30PM. So another half an hour before we're back on the clock. What's the plan, twerp?"
"I have to get back to the office. We need to rethink this. If void cracks can appear out of nowhere it means they know what they're doing. The giants I saw were speaking. Talking about something that their plan will be ready soon. The horrors might be smarter than we think." They paused as they thought about it.
"Now that you mention it. The bigger ones are smarter than the regular ones right?" Vesper thought about it.
"An invasion." Vesper let his thought be known as the others came to the same conclusion.
"Not something we can think right now, Vesper. We'll figure this out later. Willers, I'm heading to the office first." Raven put his face plate back on and flew into the air. Heading back to the office building. Another 3 hours of work as Raven got back in his office via the window. Then locking it as he glanced at the stacks of documents in front of him. The VS Suit opened up to free Raven's body. Taking a moment to figure out what was his next plan as he began to read the documents.
Letters of concern from citizens, proposals for policies that affect economics, society and politics as a whole. For politics though, whatever choice Raven made? It was going to damn him either way. It was an odd way for politics to work, the left and the right were in shambles because of the lost politicians. Now pushing various other candidates into the hot seat of the empty senate positions. Reading a report from Leanne that highlighted the candidate's weaknesses and their strengths. The candidates right now were mainly women because the men felt highly threatened by Raven's current position and most likely have withdrawn because they understood his warning.
Most of them were very attractive but then again, most of the people of Marvelia had been known for their beauty. This situation was even worse than what it was in the Bodyguard's world. What made him raise his eyebrows on the report was Leanne putting in the measurements. Putting his earpiece on and calling Leanne.
"Yes, Mister President?"
"Withers. When I ask for information. I don't need information on the measurement of the candidates. I mean, I know they're all eye-candy but remember I did have a sexual assault case on me. This kind of report can be a pain in the ass if someone else saw it." The chuckling on the other end of the line made Raven furrow his eyebrows further.
"Yes, Mister President. I'll keep that joke to myself. But there are possibilities of individuals wanting to get to you via dating."
"I mean they are smoking hot but Withers, we got a country to run. And I'm seeing the candidates on this list. They've gotten good ratings from their people. Barely any scandals. Weaknesses are just personality issues. Either they're seriously good hearted people or they know how to cover their tracks. They can fill the seats right?"
"Yes, Mister President. The 60 seats can be filled with them. But you'll also need to elect two Vice Presidents from the group. Do you want me to prepare it for you?"
"No. I think you'll ask them to find a redeeming quality about me and the answer you'll get is just looks." Leanne chuckled as Raven prepared the questions.
"So what are you making?"
"The criteria I need. I don't want to do a test with them. I just need to hear them voicing out their opinions. I need one Vice President who agrees with me and one who disagrees with me. I need them both to keep me grounded. But I need to find people who understand what I'm trying to do. I need one who can be the face of the government. Give the notice that all of them will be Senators. All 60 of them. I'll meet them next monday to start our first congress session. I've got some bills ready, do their emails work?"
"I've confirmed that all emails given are the official emails they use for their work." Raven scanned the bills he had drafted, three major bills that will determine how he would operate. The first bill would be to grant the President permission to fight horrors in voids. The second bill would be to grant additional funding for training the military and police to handle horrors. The third bill would be on granting the Void Agency more leeway to handle horrors. Leeway as in they will be armed and granted more rights to investigate bizarre cases with police.
The First Bill? He needed that to pass, Raven's senses needed to be sharpened. Sure he was the War God but what good would that be if he was locked in the office? It was a going to piss him off even more, no matter what he did. It was going to be troublesome either way. What Raven needed the most right now was finding out what exactly is the plan? All of the things he'd seen and heard? It was pointing to a massive invasion but how massive would it be?
How prepared is humanity against the creatures that loom in the void? As the War God. He was the authority and his conclusion? No. Humanity is not ready for such a threat. This world may have suffered trauma but no where near enough to turn every person in it to be warriors. It was like the cards were against him from the start. Even if he had four aces, the enemy may have a royal flush to just wash out whatever he had.
By 6PM. Sharp, Raven was off the clock. The doors opened as the other members of Valor stood in front of him.
"We'll handle your gear, Scorpio. Get some rest."
"Thanks, Vesper." With those words, Raven headed out. Getting on his bike as he rode off to nearby grocery store. Fatigued eyes that made him seem unfriendly, the cashier could barely meet his eyes when Raven brought the cases of beer. Paying it with cash, thinking about heading to an empty house. That house he owned, still had bloodstains to the walls as cases of beer placed on the table. Droplets from the tap plinking the bottom of the sink. Pure darkness loomed over him. A cigarette in hand a bottle in the other. Eyelids that weighed heavier than metals, his breathing was relaxed. A river going down his throat, then leaning his head to the back of the sofa. Another glance and Raven found himself in a ruined city. Seeing Tracy's corpse hung upside down on a street light. Corpses were all around him. The heads of the four advisors placed in front of him. Their bodies being strung and made to dance like puppets by some sick twisted being.
The sheer weight of that was landing on his back. He and Valors would survive but would this world make it? He needed to find a way to make it through. A nightmare to lose his grip on the reality. Agony. Fear. Nothing fazed him. A quick drag of the cigarette, another bottle of beer. Staring into the madness as horrors began appearing all around him.
"Fear us.. Human. For we will find you." The voices whispered into his ears, Raven's eyes met with the woman who was seated in the middle. A crimson glare as her white dress contrasted her pure charcoal skin. One that was made of darkness. Her white hair flowing with the wind. A grin towards Raven who took a swig from his beer and a long draw from his preferred poison for the lungs. A blink was all the woman needed. Tracing her fingers on Raven's cheeks.
"We'll see each other very soon. My beautiful prey." She held Raven's chin, licking her lips.
"Sure. It's a date." The President of Marvelina grinned to the woman.
"The Mother of Horrors will wait for you in the void." She spoke as she took a bite on Raven's neck. Teeth piercing into his flesh. Taking a step back as they gazed into each other's eyes. Locking in their thoughts of wanting to kill each other. She wanted Raven to suffer. Raven wanted her dead.
They had their goals. The looming darkness faded with embers from Raven's cigarette. An emptied bottle in his other hand. Slowly drifting to sleep, tomorrow's problem is the issue that Raven of tomorrow will deal with. Today was done, so the present Raven should pen the closing for the page. The weekend will be one for him to rest. Hopefully.
