Chapter 202

Kris groaned as he stirred awake, his head pounding with the force of his hangover. The sharp throbbing made him wince, and he blinked his eyes open to find himself sprawled on the floor of his living room. Slowly, he got up and stumbled upstairs, each step feeling like it echoed in his skull. Once he reached his bathroom, he opened the cabinet and grabbed a container of painkillers, popping two into his mouth and swallowing them dry.

He caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror, and the sight wasn't pretty-dark circles under his eyes, messy hair, and his skin red. Worse was the foul taste in his mouth. His breath was atrocious.

After brushing his teeth, he stripped out of his clothes and stepped into the shower. He stayed under the shower for a while, the cold water slowly helping clear some of the fog from his mind.

By the time he finished, Kris felt a little better. He dried off and slipped into a pair of trousers and a simple shirt-nothing too formal. He had no intention of going to work today, not with the press probably swarming his office once again, waiting to pounce on him the second he stepped out.

Walking back downstairs, he spotted his phone on the coffee table. He picked it up, his thumb hovering over the power button. He was about to turn it on, but he stopped himself and slipped the phone into his pocket instead.noveldrama

He knew the calls and messages would start coming immediately, and that was the last he needed. But there was something he knew he needed to do.

As much as he hated the thought of even setting eyes on his mother, Alden was right. There were a lot of things he needed to get off his chest.

Grabbing his car keys, his expression darkened as he headed out of his penthouse, making sure to wear a stormy look to deter anyone from bothering him.

Luckily, unlike the last time, there were no reporters around the police station when he got there.

Inside the station, he requested to see his mother. After a brief wait, they led him to the cell where his mother was being held.

When Kris laid eyes on her, his stomach twisted, his hand balling into fists.

Linda sat on the edge of the bed, her face lighting up when she saw him. "Kris," she said, a relieved smile spreading across her face. "I knew you'd come, son. I knew you'd realize your mistake. You've come to get me out, haven't you?"

She reached her hands through the bars to touch him, but Kris stepped back, his gaze cold as he stared at her. His mother. The woman who had orchestrated his misery.

"Why, Linda?" He said, his voice low but sharp, like a blade cutting through the air. "Why did you work so hard to destroy my happiness? What did I ever do to make you hate me so much?"

"Hate you?" Linda's voice rose, incredulous. "Kris, you're my son. I could never hate you. How could you even think that? I love you."

Kris scoffed, shaking his head bitterly. "Is that why you did everything in your power to destroy what I had with Thalassa, the one woman that made me happy?"

"You never liked Thalassa from the beginning of our relationship, but you pretended to accept her while you plotted to have her assaulted to make me believe she cheated on me the night before our wedding! You made me blame it on only Karen when you were the mastermind."

"That's not true, Son. I would never-"

"Don't fucking call me that again, Linda!" Kris growled under his breath. "You framed Thalassa for embezzlement; you had her arrested when you knew she was innocent! You watched me throw her in jail -the woman I loved. I threw her out of my life and lost her because of you."

"Kris-"

"But even that..." Kris's voice dropped even further, filled with pain as he continued. "Even after all of that, maybe...just maybe, I could've forgiven you. But you murdered my unborn child. MY CHILD, Linda. And for that, I will never forgive you."

"I didn't do anything," Linda gritted out, her nostrils flaring. "Why would I want to harm my own grandchild?"

"You're fucking shameless, Linda Miller." Kris spat, his voice filled with disgust. "You don't even have the fucking decency to admit what you did."

"Why would admit to something I

didn't do? Linda shot back. "That woman has been lying to you this whole time. You would've seen it if you aren't always so ready to believe everything she says."

Kris shook his head slowly, his heart squeezing painfully inside his chest. "I don't know why I thought you would show even a little bit of regret for ruining my life. But I see you're too much of a monster for that.”

He turned to leave, but Linda's voice stopped him in his tracks.

"If that woman really lost the baby like she claimed, then how do you explain the three-year-old son she's hiding in New York?"

Kris froze, his body rigid. Slowly, he turned back to face her. "What did you just say?"

Linda's lips twitched, barely able to hide her pleasure. "She didn't tell you, did she? Of course she didn't, because then it would prove that she's @liar who manipulated you into having your own mother arrested."

"You're lying. I don't believe you." Kris sneered.

"Investigate if," Linda said, her smirk growing. "You'll see the truth. Better yet, confront her and let's see if she has the guts to tell you the truth."

Without another word, Kris turned and stormed out of the station, his mind reeling and his heart pounding inside his chest.

No. It couldn't be. It couldn't possibly be, could it?

Thalassa woke from a fitful sleep, her body heavy with exhaustion. She reached for her phone almost immediately, looking at the screen to see whether she'd slept through any calls, but it was empty. She'd waited almost all night for Kris to call, but nothing had come through.

Surely he'd listened to her voicemail by now, right? She bit her lip, anxiety gnawing at her. If he'd heard it, he would've called her by now. Wouldn't he?

She tried to stay calm, telling herself to be patient, but by the time afternoon dragged by, she couldn't take it any longer.

Grabbing her phone, she started dialing Kris's number. But just as she was about to hit call, her phone buzzed. It was a call from Betty.

Thalassa answered with a frown. "Betty? Is everything okay?"

"No," Betty's voice came through, sounding anxious. "Kris is here in New York. He's standing outside the gate, and he said he won't leave until he sees Alex."

Thalassa's breath caught in her throat, her heart beginning to hammer in her chest. "What... what is Kris doing there?"

"Thalassa... Kris knows. He told me he knows that Alex is his son."

The world spun in front of Thalassa's eyes.
