Chapter 66 - Farming Wyvern

Chapter 66 - Farming Wyvern

Author’s corner: HELLO HELLO! Wargon-solutions for normal problems, because WHY NOT?

ANYWAY, this is the wargon-like solution I have been announcing since earlier. I hope it’s crazy enough for you guys, as I thought it was the most WTF solution I could come up with and I had it in mind for quite some time. And yes, I doo think I might use that part as a new summary…

ALSO, tomorrow should have another chapter, probably some fight and then we should be close to the closing of the arc, which will bring us to War meeting Yuu IRL, and probably a whole Off-line arc.

Have a good read!

----

I slowly stumble my way out from the wyvern’s back and fall to the ground, my legs trembling slightly as I slowly managed to get used to the ground’s firmness. Besides me, Red nimbly jump down and didn’t even bother with waiting before walking around and seeing the scene around us.

“Tell me, Stone-born. What did you think of this flight?” Rathian asked me curious, to which I turned to her in my best serious tone and replied.

“Well, the wind in my face was extremely cold, your maneuvers were extremely dangerous and I almost fell down twice. And actually did fall once, even if I somehow managed to hold on to Red’s arm.” I said while staring right at her eyes. “Not only did I almost die, but even now I’m barely able to stand still on the ground without fear of falling down.”

“You DO know that if you hadn’t insisted on standing up on her back to copy that scene from Titanic, none of that would happen, right?” Red said dryly as she summoned back her pets.

“No matter. It was still ridiculously dangerous!” I said in an outrage towards her before turning back to a surprised Wyvern. “So, when can we do that again?” I asked with my eyes shining.

Rathian laughed loudly for a moment, and even Rio in my hands laughed a bit. Since she was still young, she couldn’t fly as fast as her mother, so Rathian asked me to carry her a bit as she flew, since her usual spot on the mother’s back was occupied by the badass golem and the annoying elf.

I quickly let go of her and saw as she flew around a few times before landing on her mother’s head, where she curled up happily, purring. I smiled a bit at the scene while summoning Aura and Lieutenant, both whom were far too big to come with us. Crys leapt off my shoulder and started to stretch herself a bit before going back to her idle pose, with the hands crossing off in front of her.

A quick look around and I saw that I was on Loran’s, the dwarf, farm. We guided Rathian to settle down on a place that didn’t seem to have any crop or something of the like, or at least I hope it doesn’t. Still, a Wyvern approaching a farm in broad daylight is quite a scene to see, so I could already see as a small crowd started to gather around.

Even that strange clockwork turtle from earlier was here, and what looked like a small clockwork girl was pointing a rifle, much like Lila’s, towards Rathian, only to be stopped by another larger one, who grabbed her by the neck and dragged her back to the turtle.

“What is this?” I heard a voice coming from besides me, only to find a troll in full plate armor mounting on what looked like a large wolf. Gazluz quickly jumped down from the wolf and asked him to stay still as he approached us. He looked confused and waryly at the wyvern and then looked confused back to me. “I heard that there were sightings of a wyvern heading towards this farm, yet it’s only standing around… Golem. What’s the meaning of this?” He asked me once he noticed that Rathian wasn’t showing any sign of hostility.

“Oh, good afternoon, Gazluz.” I greeted the troll cheerfully. “Meet Rathian, she’s an unknown level greater wyvern and is also the one responsible for some of the attacks on the farm.” I said before turning back to Rathian. “Rathian, meet Gazluz, head chief of the guards in the town.”

“Greetings, health-bearer.” Rathian said, greeting the troll who seemed surprised.

But health bearer? Does that have something to do with the troll’s regeneration or something like that? Could be…

“…It’s a pleasure meeting you too… Mister…” The troll said waryly.

“She’s female.” Red interjected.

“Sorry then… Ma’am.” The troll fixed his wording.

“It doesn’t bother me.” Rathian replied with a short nod. The troll looked surprised for a moment before nodding.

“Then… Might I ask you what brings you back to this field?” Gazluz asked while putting his hands on the axe at his waist. “From what the golem here said, it seems that you were the one who attacked here.”

“She actually came here to apologize.” I said, and saw as the troll looked confused at me. “She didn’t know that the cows were Loran’s property. And maybe also find a way to repay him for his trouble.” Gazluz looked confused towards me then turned to Rathian, who nodded.

“It is as the Stone-born said. There’s no need to be wary of me.” She said in a patient tone. “As long as no one harms me, I shall not harm you back.”

“I see…” Gazluz said while relaxing a bit and taking his hand out of the axe. “Forgive-me, Ma’am. It’s a bit difficult to keep my calm when near a mighty beast as yourself.” He said with a brief nod.

“Hmm… I see.” Rathian said with a nod with a pensive tone. “I did not take my appearance in account, so I guess I might be a bit intimidating like this, right?” After saying those words, she made some of that growling speech with Rio, whom nodded and flew away from her head.

Only to land on mine, where se curled up in my hair and coiled her tail gently around my neck. I was caught a bit by surprise so I didn’t really have much time to react before she was already purring softly while looking at her mother. A quick glance back and I saw as Red eyed me jealously, while Aura eyed Rioreia jealously.

I petted Aura for a bit to calm her down before turning back to Rathian, once I saw that some light was emanating from her body. At first I was confused on what was happening, only to see as what appeared to be magic circles appearing all around her, floating in the air as it spun around her.

“Hmm… Floating encyclopedia… I could use some explanation here.” I told Crys, who was also looking at the scene shocked for a moment, before snapping out of it and nodding.

“That’s… Humm… I can’t be sure since my database acess is more limited to higher level spells… But that’s… One ridiculously powerful spell.” Crys said with her eyes wide open. “If I take in account the amount of mana she’s using…” I heard the sound of her gulping down, even when she didn’t have a throat. “She must be level… three hundred, three fifty… At the very least…”

Now it was my, Red’s and Gazluz’s time to gulp in worry. And to think that I seriously considered getting into a fight with her? I’m so bleeping glad that I didn’t pick a fight with her. Seriously, if she even as scratched me I would end up as nothing more than a bloody pulp on the ground.

As we watched the scene, the glow around her grew even stronger, leaving us almost blind for a moment before settling down. But once it was gone, there wasn’t a huge wyvern in front of us, but a person I had never seen before.

A woman, in her late twenty’s, with pale white skin and a dull, yet beautiful green hair that fell all the way down to her waist. She wore a gorgeous green dress that left almost all of her upper back open, covering only the front until it reached the waist, where it joined to the back-side forming a long skirt.

Then, there were her arms. They had a perfectly human shape, but they were covered in dull green scales and ended in a pair of claws. Between her arm and her body was a leathery membrane of similar color. She looked much similar to an Harpy, except that she was more of a Wyvern than bird.

“I… Wasn’t expecting that…” I said to Red and Gazluz, both whom nodded in response.

“I told you that mom was strong!” Rio said cheerfully in my head. “One day, I’ll be just as good as mommy!”

I smiled a bit at the cheerful young wyvern while I extended my hand to her and petted her head a little. She purred a bit more before I turned my hand back to Aura, who was once again getting jealous.

“So, is this form better?” Rathian asked as she approached us, her voice no longer sounding disembodied, but clearly coming from her. She was tall for a woman, but even then she was about eye-level with me, so I didn’t need to look down to talk to her.

“Well, it does make it easier to talk with you without worrying that you might bite my head off if I misspeak a word.” I said with a nod.

“I’m not really a fan of rocks, so there was no need to worry about that.” She said with a smile, to which I nodded.

“You could blast him with a fire ball or something. Also works.” Red added.

“Or claw him, I heard wyvern’s claws are pretty sharp.” Gazluz added.

“Or do a backflip, for the sheer irony.” I added with a nod.

“Backflip?” Gazluz asked confused.

“Long story.” I said briefly before turning back to Rathian, who seemed to be watching us with some amusement. “So… I didn’t know that Wyverns could do that.” I said with a raised eyebrow, but she shook her head.

“Only greater dragons can use that spell. Lesser and normal dragons are unable to do that.” She replied with a brief sigh. “And even then, this spell feels extremely restricting, as it is a foreign body for us, so there aren’t many that use it constantly.” She said as she looked at herself. “This is a first for myself too. Still, nod as bad as they make it be.”

“Let me guess… The draconids come from that?” I discretely asked Crys, who nodded lightly. I smiled a bit awkwardly before turning back to Rathian. “And, why exactly would you have a spell like that?” I asked confused. “I mean, you are normally strong and all, and from what you said, you get weaker with this spell… It doesn’t make much sense to me.” I said a bit confused, and saw as Rathian smiled lightly.

“That’s actually a spell that the scale-father came up with.” She said. “It was made so that we could relate more easily with your kind without our intimidating appearance.”

“Scale-father?” I asked confused.

“If I’m not wrong, your kind calls him the dragon-god.”

“Dragon god?” Gazluz asked surprised. “I thought he was a myth.” The troll said with a frown.

“No. The Scale-father is as real as your own gods.” Rathian said with a nod. “I’ve met him once myself. Even if only for a brief moment.” At her words, the troll widened his eyes in surprise.

“Dragon god?” Red asked me confused. I simply shrugged as I also had no idea. But Rathian noticed our small exchange and turned to us.

“The dragon god is the one known to be the first dragon, and is also the first one of our species.” She told us in a slow manner. “He is also so powerful that he ranks just below the elemental gods.”

“Like Arkhoss?” I asked and saw as Rathian nodded. “I see…” I said with a nod and quickly reminded myself of something. From what I see, Rathian is fairly knowledgeable about this, so maybe… “Hey, Rathian… Does the four gods of disaster rings a bell for you?” I asked, and saw as the wyvern frowned slightly.

“I’m not very sure…” The wyvern said with a frown. “Do you have something else about them?” She asked and I nodded.

“Yeah, I have their names. They were…” I quickly opened the quest window and read their names. “Alsh-tahar, Baltamur, Razzasahks or Ultgor…” I said a bit worried if I was speaking their names correctly. Red and Gazluz frowned confused at the names, but Rathian’s eyes widened as she nodded.

“Yes. The first one, it’s familiar.” She said with a nod. “It seems that Daltarus, one of the first sons of the scale father once ran into it and they had a fight.” She said after thinking for a moment. “I… Don’t remember much from their story, but it seems that it was a fierce fight that had no clear winner.”

My eyes widened at her words, since it was actually the first true clue I had about one of the four gods. Goulder’s research still hadn’t bore any real fruits ever since he started and most other people didn’t even know about the story. I could, of course, ask Wallace about it, but I would feel that I was cheating if I were to do that, so I never did.

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

“Where was their fight, do you know?” I asked the wyvern and saw as she widened her eyes briefly.

“Why do you ask, stone-born?” She asked me curious. “He’s such a dangerous foe that even a god’s son would think twice before attacking him...”

“I plan on one day fighting against that guy, so I need to gather some information about him if possible.” I told her. She eyed me for some time and smirked slightly for a moment before nodding.

“I heard that it was on a desert far away from this land.” She said with a nod. “That’s the most I can remember. Do you still plan on going there?”

“Yeah. I do. Heck, in a few days I plan on going to a desert anyway, so chances are I’m going to get a look at it earlier than what I expect.” I said with a shrug and saw as the wyvern nodded. Satisfied with my answers for now, I spoke another doubt that I earned during our last talk. “You keep saying greater dragons, dragon god and so on… I thought you were a Wyvern?” I said confused and she nodded.

“Dragon is just the general term for our kind.” She said in a teaching tone. “Wyvern, Wyrm and Drakes are mostly used to divide us according to our physical characteristics and specialties.”

I nodded in accordance. So, it’s more like the difference between dog races than comparing a dog to a fox then? As I wondered about that, I saw as a dwarf, a barbarian and a fairy approached us from afar. The dwarf seemed to be in a bit of a hurry, while the other two were approaching a bit more slowly.

The dwarf stopped close to us and looked around confused for a moment, in his hand was an iron pitchfork that he held in a slightly threatening manner as he looked around. He was wearing the same farming clothes as earlier, straw hat included.

“Where’s de wyvern?” Loran asked confused as he looked around. He briefly eyed Rio in my head but shook his head.

“That would be me.” Rathian said while lightly raising her hand.

“I figured ya’d be bigga…” The dwarf said with a raised eyebrow. “Then, wat brings ya ‘ere?” he asked while putting the pitchfork on the ground and supported his weight against it.

“I came here to amend for my mistakes, Son-of-the-forge.” She said to the dwarf, who raised his eyebrows slightly. “I made the mistake of taking some of your animals, and now I came here to repay you for those mistakes.”

“So, ya are the culprit den?” The dwarf asked with a raised eyebrow and Rathian nodded. “Den, how do ya expect to pay me?” he asked directly.

I blinked surprise as I didn’t expect the guy to be so direct with Rathian. After all, we told him that it was a massive wyvern that he was talking to, yet he acted as if he didn’t give a damn. I was half expecting him to simply start badmouthing Rathian for stealing his animals.

“That’s what I planned to see here.” Rathian said. “I don’t know what your kind use for trades like these.”

“Hmm…” The dwarf said with a nod while looking back to the field. As he did that, my father and pea approached us.

“So… What did I miss here?” He asked confused. “Where’s the huge dragon and why is there a small dragon on your head?”

I smiled a bit awkwardly and started to explain him the situation with some help from Red. He heard everything patiently while Pea looked curious at Rio, who looked back at her. Once we were done, my father nodded satisfied and nodded briefly before turning to me and asking.

“Then, what about the other one?” He asked me, and I looked back at him confused. “I mean, she’s a dragon, doesn’t that means that she flies and doesn’t need to break the fence?”

I widened my eyes at his words before slapping my forehead. I had completely forgotten about that. Deciding to go back to examination after some time, I sighed loudly while turning back to Rathian and Loran, who were discussing something.

“Gold? Is that the yellow metal? I do have some back at my old cave, but I’d rather not use it. I quite like it, to tell the truth.” She said to him, which made the dwarf frown slightly. “What about I bring you a beast from the forest? Wouldn’t that be the same?”

“Nah. Hunters do dat everyday.” The dwarf replied while shaking his head. “Dat, and you had to think of de effort needed to take care of a growing animal.”

“Is it that hard?” Rathian asked doubtful, and Loran nodded.

“Dey get sick, dey try to run ‘way, dey need to breed, dey need to be fed… Tis a lot more trouble than wat ya may think.” Loran said while shrugging. “Huntin beasts ya just go, kill, and den tis done. Not de same.”

“I see, I never thought about it.” Rathian said while shaking her head.

So, basically, even though Rathian have gold at her home, she didn’t really want to use it as payment, probably due to the fact of dragons liking to hoard gold also applies to her. But the way she planned to repay Loran didn’t really appease the dwarf, who thought that the effort applied to hunting wasn’t the same as the one applied to raising an animal.

Thinking a bit about it, I had an idea about how to solve their problem, but before I could tell them that, I had another idea that sounded a bit funnier, so I started it as a joke.

“Then, why don’t you work here?” I asked Rathian and felt as everyone else froze, looking at me confused for a moment. “I mean, have her work here on the farm until she gets enough to pay you back. You get some extra production and Rathian gets to know a bit more about our culture.” I said cheerfully.

And as I waited for the comeback from either the dwarf or the wyvern, I saw as Rathian slowly nodded.

“That… Could work.”

What?

I stopped and looked at the two, who were both nodding with the idea. With a look back at Red and Wulf, I saw as the two were holding themselves to not face-palm at what was happening.

“Hmm… Let me see, three cows and two pigs…” The dwarf said while frowning a bit. “I’d say about eleven gold coins worth of job.” He nodded after that.

“I see. How long would it take for tme to reach such value?”  She asked the dwarf seriously.

“Not sure… Hard to tell…” He said with a frown then looking back at his farm. “Ya, I have an idea.” He said turning back to Rathian. “I ‘ave some unused field by dere. I’ll teach ya how to farm, and then you give me ya crops.” He said with a nod.

I blinked surprised as I looked at the scene, and only snapped out of it when I felt Red’s hand resting on my shoulders.

“War… What did you just do?” She asked me while holding her face with her hand.

“Hmm, what do you mean?” I asked and saw as she took a deep breath.

“War… You just made one of the strongest monsters ever seen by any players in the whole game take on farming.” She said with a slightly annoyed expression. “You made a DRAGON, by the love of god, YOU JUST MADE A DRAGON A FREAKING FARMER!” She almost shouted that at my face.

“Sooo…?” I said with a fake confusion.

“THAT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE! HOW THE HELL DOES SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENS?” She shouted at me. “What are you doing with the common sense?”

“Common sense?” I asked her, holding back my laughter. “Cygnasdammit Red. I’m a crafting addicted moving pile of rocks that hunts monsters tens of level above me just so I can wear their skin and wield their bones as weapons! I managed to convince a martial artist to call me master even when I know next to nothing about martial arts just by using a bit of poor acting. The skin I have on my back is the pelt from one of my first friends in here. Said friend who is now one of my pet ice-fox of ultimate fluffiness, together with a medal addicted military cat that outranks most of a city’s worth of soldiers, and some floating pink-crystal doll that wears maid costume and knows more about this world than I could ever hope for.” I said while pointing at each one individually. “And I’m pretty sure I have many other weird things to add there and just can’t remember right now. I’m not sure if you noticed it, but common sense doesn’t apply to a ten meters radius around me, you know?”

Geez, that pretty much summed up my experience in here. I guess that if this was a story on a fanfiction site, I could use it as the summary.

WAIT A MINUTE…

I shook my head to get my attention back to the wyvern and dwarf who looked at me curious for a moment. I took some deep breathing for a moment before speaking again.

“Anyway, I think you can take out half of her debt.” I said to the dwarf, who raised an eyebrow confused. “I’m pretty sure only half of the attacks were her fault, the others were something else.” I told him while pointing towards the fence. He widened his eyes and nodded.

“Den, five gold coins.” The dwarf said with a nod before turning back to me. “So, who’s the other one?” He asked me and I sighed a bit.

“I’m still not sure.” I said. “I’ll go back to searching around for a culprit.” I told him before turning back to Rathian. “Then, I guess that you will stay here and learn how to farm?” I asked the wyvern and she nodded.

I took some time to get used to the idea of a wyvern farming, since it was a bit too much even for me, before turning back to the gate and preparing to leave. But before I could do that, Rathian called me back.

“Stone-born. Can I ask you for one last favor?” She asked me, to which I turned to her confused. “From the little I know about farming, it will probably take some time for me to repay the Son-of-the-forge, yet I was in the middle of my travels with my daughter.” She said with a smile.

“…You want me to take Rioreia with me on my travels.” I said with a slightly weary tone. Said wyvern looked up from the place where she was playing with Pea and looked at me, then at her mother.

“Yes. It’s also a good idea to have her following you around since she can lear a little more about your culture than what I do… Which can help her avoid some problems like the one I just got myself into.” The wyvern said.

“Then leave her with Red. She’s probably much better for that teaching job than me.” I said while pointing at the elf behind me.

“And a lot more normal too.” She added discretely and I nodded.

“Do I have to go, mom?” Rio asked while flying close to her and staring at her mother.

“Yes, dear.” Her mother nodded as she held her and hugged her daughter. “You have to see more of the world than our old cave. And it seems that you liked the stone-born, so who’s better than him to show you around while mommy’s working here.?” She said and the little wyvern looked at her for some time before nodding.

“Okay. I’ll go with stone-man then.” She said while flying away from mother and getting to me, landing on my head like before.

“I’ll be counting on you, Stone-born.” Rathian said with a smile. I opened my mouth to complain, but her eyes became a bit scary. “And even if I’m not too bothered about her getting a few scratches, I hope nothing too bad happens to her, okay?” Scratch the bit scary, I’m staring at a murder here!

“By the way, Midway through the scene, Gazluz said that he couldn’t take it anymore and went to the city to have a drink. Your father went with him and said that he is entrusting your sister to you until you get back.” Red added.

Once more, I sighed as I walked away.
