Chapter 14 - Stuff of the myths

Chapter 14 - Stuff of the myths

Author’s corner: HELLO HELLO! Last chapter of what I call the beginner’s arc!

ANYWAY, about the side stories, what I read on the comments actually gave me an idea on what to do with them. Firstly, I will keep making sidestories, but they won’t always be continuous. For now, I plan on making a side story about Mary (or Han-chan), and then wait a bit before making another. I might make one telling about Yuu on her adventures with her friends, or maybe one about the MC’s friends, or even about S2daddylovescygS2 *snicker*. Anyway, there will be more side story, but not always about Yuu.

ALSO, I’ll try to pump the Extra chapter today, so we can spread the legend of Green eyes… What? The difference about extras and sidestories? Side stories are about characters that appear in the main story, and their POV on the situation, or their own stories. Extras are for character that do NOT appear directly in the story, but somehow or another end up seeing the main character in one of his moments… and end up adding to the legend of green eyes… Not to say that extras won’t appear on the main story… I might just end up and: Boom, you’re in.

Have a good read!

-----

My logging out event was pretty uneventful. Since there were around two hours since I had logged in, it was now around nine o clock. Since the next time I logged in, I would probably stay in the machine up to the morning, I thought that it  would be better if I prepared myself, so I started by cooking a quick meal for me, and by quick, I mean: Hot water + 3 minutes.

Satisfied and full, I then proceeded to take a quick bath and do my business…

With the bathroom clear, I sat in front of my, up to now, ignored computer and started checking if there was anything new around my twenty or so tabs in my browser. After reading a few web novels, reading a few games reviews and seeing another top ten video on you tube, I was finally ready to dig back into my bed and do an all weekender!

But first…

I took an USB flash drive and plugged it in my computer, passed a few archives to it and took It out. I plugged the USB on a side port in the D-lute, and hoped that it would work.

Logging in…

Once again I was back in the character selection area, but since Wargon is my only character right now, I was already being impersonated into the golem.

I looked around looking for Cyg, but couldn’t see her anywhere.

Just as I was about to give up and enter back into the game, a sudden flash of light happens, and Cyg appears before me… But…

I had no doubts that the girl in front of me was her. Her body build, the playful grin and the floating feet kind of gave away, but aside from that… Well. Firstly, she wasn’t a human anymore, her skin had gone one shade of white up, but there were these slightly bluish lines all around her. Her hair, although still as long and flowy as before, now wasn’t made of many strands, but looked much more a single, whole mass. Her clothes had also changed. Although keeping the same shape, color and pattern, it was now made of some kind of opaque crystal.

If you hadn’t guessed by now, for some reason she looked like a marble-skinned golem…

I was caught by surprise by this, so I only stood there looking at her in shock for some time. She smiled brightly and did a quick spin around.

“So? How do I look?”

“You… Kind of look one of these god’s statues we see in temples…”

“Well, I AM a goddess!” Too smug… Let’s tone her down a bit.

“Really? I have my doubts…” And a pout, done.

I smiled widely at her, only to annoy her further, and it seemed that it worked, as she turned her head away. I held back a laugh before doing what I wanted to do.

“So… I had promised to show you the stories I wrote… Right?” Oh god, this is embarrassing… Her eyes shone up with excitement, and before I even had the time to react, she was already grabbing my chain-mail while bouncing up and down in excitement.

“Where? Where? Where?”

I had to gently push her back before something bad happened.

“I put them in a USB plugged to the console… I guess you can access them this way, right?”

She nodded happily, and soon enough a window appeared before her, she started scrolling through it quickly, her eyes widening the more she looked. Out of curiosity I took a peek on the window and noticed that she was checking how many archives there were in the flash-drive. I don’t remember if I already told this, but I actually try to write a lot, but most of them end up only as chapter one… Although sometimes a longer one does appear…

She seemingly picked one at random and started to read, I took this time to ask away the doubt I had.

“So, why the sudden change in appearance?” She blinked in surprise and turned back to me.

“Muu… It’s that you gave me that idea of playing the game myself… So even if I weren’t going to play myself, I kind of wanted to see how I would look like if I were to be of each race… And when I saw you logging in, I decided to choose golem just like you!” She blinked to my side and put herself besides me while summoning a mirror in front of us. “Look, doesn’t it look like I am your sister this way?” She said while looking up to me.

Oh god… How could one phrase from this girl have so much destructive power?

Wait… Now that she mentioned it…

“Cyg, could I ask you for a favor?” She blinked in surprise, but then nodded. “You see, some of my relatives are going to start playing this game in some time from now… Any chance you could give them some help?”

“Sure… But how exactly would they need help?” She looked at me with curiosity.

“Well, the problem would probably be my sister…”

“Eh! You already have a sister?” For some reason her eyes were a mix of disappointment and expectation.

“Yeah, but she is only five years old… And I kind of needed that you could somehow put her together with my father when they start creating their characters… I’m kind of afraid what she might end up doing if left alone.” Just for the record, my little walking disaster of a sister, when she had less than two years on her belt, managed to short circuit the telephonic line in our house… So yeah… You see where I’m going…

“Heh… She is so young…” She stopped to think for a moment, then nodded. “No problem, have them tell me that they know you and I’ll do something about it! Is that all?” I stopped to think for a moment, then nodded. I don’t think there is much left for me to do then.

She smiles to me and wave her hand, and immediately I am back to the village where I had last left off.

When I look at the sky, I notice that the sun was barely starting to rise. Since I wasn’t sure about the time, I decided to start walking towards Illwen’s house. And I managed to get there just in time to see the dark elf leaving through the door while parting with his wife and daughter.

I raised my hand to greet him when he saw me, and his half-closed eyes widen for a brief moment before he smiles. Giselde greets me with a heartfelt smile and almost slam me in the ground when she taps my back.

“IT’S MISTER GOLEM!” Came the happy shout from their daughter.

Aliwa was much more enthusiastic in our encounter than her parents, running towards me. I prepared myself for a sudden hug from her opening my arms wide, but the girl completely surprised me and her parents. She jumped at me, but instead of aiming at me, she went for my arm, and used them as a pivot to launch herself upwards, where she straightened herself and fell on my shoulders, hugging my head.

The three of us were simply too stunned to say anything for a while, then Giselde burst into laughter as me and Illwen could only smile wryly. Seeing that I wouldn’t be able to take the little runt from my shoulders any time soon, I let her there and went towards Illwen.

“My, my… Sorry about my daughter… Sometimes she is too energetic for her own good…” I shook my head, telling him that it wasn’t a problem. His face then turned serious. “So, did you find that cave I told you?”

I took out the ore from my inventory and showed it to him with a prideful smile. He widened his eyes in surprise before picking it from my hand. He took his time while examining  the rock, and finally he gave a sigh of relief.

“So, it’s not a bad sign?” I asked curious, and he nodded.

“Yes, yes. I was afraid that this could be what is known as dark-blood steel ore…” Seeing my confused face he smiled wryly. “It’s a kind of ore that appears on area with high concentration of demonic energy. Usually, there are some really powerful demons nearby. Strong enough to destroy whole cities…” I gulped loudly when I heard that.

“I take that’s not it, then?” He shook his head.

“This is just a red-tint iron. It’s a rare kind of iron that, even when smelted, it keeps the red coloration. It is pretty, but besides that, it’s the same as any kind of iron. Here, you can keep it.” He gave me the ore back and I happily stored it in the inventory. He smiled widely before turning to Giselde. “Dear, could you take those old gloves of mine? This young man here deserves them…” The dwarf nodded and went back to inside the house; the elf turned to me and said. “Now, if you excuse me, I have some mining to do. But still, many thanks for your help!”

QUEST:

Miner problemIllwen, the miner, examined the ore that you brought back to him and is glad to know that his worries were unfounded. As promised, he asked Giselde to give you your rewardsRewards:

Gloves of the ferocious miner.

Increase in mining skill.

Red-tint iron ore.

I also earned a level for completing the quest! Hooray!

He shook my hand and then took his daughter from my shoulders and kissed her cheeks before walking away.

I played a bit with Aliwa while I waited for Giselde to come back. When she appeared, she was carrying a pair of dark chain-mail gloves in her hands.

Gloves of the ferocious miner (Hands)Def:13M. res6Quality:GoodDurability:30/30Description

A multi-purpose chain mail gloves. Protects against attacks and helps mining.

STR +6, Agi +5, Critical mining point +2

I widened my eyes at the item… Isn’t this really good? It also improves mining? So awesome! But what is this critical mining point? Is that the shining spot? I never managed to actually land a hit there before, always missing the spot by a few centimeters… Does it increases that area?

“Here, kid. Make sure to make good use of these, ok?” She said while patting my back, I nodded to her. “Now, Aliwa, say good bye to mister golem because it seems that he will go somewhere far away!”

“Ehh? Mister golem is going away? When are you going to come back? I want to hear more stories!”

MUST! RESIST! PUPPY! EYES!

“Then, let mister golem make a deal with you, ok?” I said while crouching and petting her head. It seems that I am developing an habit… Hmm… “Mister golem will travel a lot, and will get a lot of stories to tell you later, ok?”

The little girl’s eyes brightened when she heard my promise then nodded happily. I bade my farewell to her and her mother before going back my way.

Now, there was one place I had to go before leaving the village.

I walked towards the wild dogs area, and there I found the old house with the small studio besides it. Like always, there was an old man sitting in front of the rack clearing away the fur on a piece of hide.

“HELLO, HELLO, WALLACE!” I greeted him happily, and the old man almost hit the ceiling when he jumped in surprise. He turned back to me and looked at me in anger before picking a piece of hide besides him and throwing at me, but I used my shield to block it as I already expected this. “Missed me?” I said tauntingly at him.

He mumbled some rude words that I shouldn’t put here before going back to his work.

“So, what do you want, brat?” He asked scowling.

“Heh… Actually, I came here with three things in mind…” I said my thoughts as I walked besides him. “Well, first, let’s start with the more troublesome one…” He looked at me curious. “I want an objective.” His eyes widened in surprise, well, not that I blame him, after all even I think this is strange. “You see… I already have this idiotic dream of mine of hunting strong monsters and whatnot… But I want something a bit more concrete, I want something for me to truly aim for. Something that, if I do, everyone will know my name! I want some big, bad and strong monster that I can set my aim at, and who’s best to tell me something like that than the old war veteran, Wallace, the Dragon General?”

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

He looked surprised at me, then he frowned. Much to my surprise, he stopped his work and turned back to me, looking me straight in the eyes.

“Boy, do you have any idea on what you just asked me?”

“No, but I don’t care. Also, it’s not like I am going to run straight at it, I will properly prepare myself before facing it. I may be crazy, but I’m still not suicidal.” He looked at me in the eyes, then a wide grin appeared on his face.

“Okay, boy, then let me help you with that.” He leaned back on to the table behind him and looked at the sky, reminiscing. “You see, boy. Ah’m not one to brag, but back in my day, Ah was one of the strongest person alive, you know?” Not really surprised there, to tell the truth… “Ah could count on one hand the amount of people that could actually stand up in a fight against me… Ah fought dragons, demons, angels and monsters… Ah laid wastes to whole armies by mahself…  Ah’ve seen things even more powerful than you could ever imagine…” He looked at me once again, his eyes dead serious. “Ah thought that nothing more could give me fear, nothing more in this world would ever make me stop… Ah grew reckless, boy, and Ah started to seek the legends, the myths… Ah started to look around for things that were only talked in books and in children stories…”

He gave a long sigh and once again looked at the sky.

“Boy, Ah thought that Ah was fearless, that Ah was brave, that Ah was unstoppable…” He suddenly shivered as the memories came back to him. “And then, Ah met it… Ah met the myth, Ah met the legend… Ah met true fear… Boy… That time, Ah finally understood that, there are somethings out there that shouldn’t be fought. Ah only needed a glance, one single glance at the creature, and ah was unable to even move a single finger. Ah dropped to my knees, and all that Ah could hope was for that… Thing… To ignore me, to let me go.” He suddenly gave a weak laugh. “Ah didn’t even need to be bothered… for that thing, even Ah, one of the strongest of mah time, was nothing more than a freckle of dust.” Once again, another dejected sigh. “Ah’ve never felt so powerless, boy…”

I gulped loudly. I could somehow understand that what the old man was saying was the truth, and I had experienced firsthand his power, twice. But for something to exist that didn’t even consider the old man a threat… What kind of creature is that?

“What was it that you found, Wallace?” I asked.

Strange, even when I knew how powerless I would be against such creature… I couldn’t help but feel… Excited.

He looked at me with a strange light in his eyes.

“What Ah saw was a monster… Just like you wanted, boy, but in a completely different scale than whatever you could ever imagine… Are you sure you want to go after it, boy?”

“Heh… If it wasn’t something at least on that level, it wouldn’t be any fun, right?” I said putting my best confident smile.

And Wallace laughed. He laughed like there was no tomorrow. But it didn’t feel like he was mocking me.

“Ah knew you were something else, boy, but Ah never expected you to be so… Extreme!” He laughed and started walking towards his house while motioning me to follow him. “Hear me, boy, Ah won’t tell everything about those guys, since there would be no fun if Ah did that, so Ah’ll start by giving you a tip.” He said with a playful smile, different from any that I had saw before. “When you get to the capital, search around for the Four gods of disasters, you hear me? They are an old and almost forgotten legend, so you won’t find it anywhere usual.”

“Then where should I start?” I asked curious. “Is there a library at the capital where I could find any information about them?”

“Good idea, boy, it seems that your head isn’t as bad as Ah thought it would be.” He made motion for me to wait a moment while he went to his bedroom, I heard the sound of a drawer being opened then closed. When he came back there was a beautiful golden feather in his hand. “Boy, promise me this.” He said, suddenly putting his hands in my shoulder. “Ah don’t care when, ah don’t care how. But once you beat these bastards, you are going to make the damned best armor and the damnable best weapon you can out of them, and if Ah am still alive by then, you are going to come here, and show it to me, you got it?”

I widened my eyes at his sudden request, but I put my best ferocious smile and nodded.

“Leave it to me, old man. I’m going to make you damn proud of having taught me skinning.”

He grinned widely, then put the golden feather in my hand. I looked at it suspiciously for a moment. Is this an item to resurrect or something?

“This is a whispering feather, boy. It allows you to talk to its owner wherever you be.” I widened my eyes at this. “If you ever need any tip when it comes to skinning, give me a call and Ah’ll try mah best to help you. Now… You said there were three things you wanted from me, what are the other two?” He asked changing the subject.

I blinked my eyes in surprise, then remembered.

“Oh, yeah. You told me that you would recommend me to your daughter for when I were to learn leatherworking. I wanted to know how to find her.”

“Oh, is that all?” He had a slight frown. “That’s simple, when you get to the capital, just look for a girl named Melinda, she’s a half human half garuda, red wings and feathers on the forearms and forelegs. Claws for feet. Can’t miss her.” I nodded. “If she asks who sent you, show her the feather.”

Garuda… Garuda… If I remember right, garudas are some kind of birdmen that you could choose on the character creation, with their bodies full of feathers and a bird faced, along with two huge wings…

“So, what’s the third then?” I snapped back from my thoughts when he asked.

“Well…” From the three things I wanted from him, this was the most awkward, so I looked away while scratching my cheek. “I just wanted to thank you for helping me earlier…”

He widened his eyes in surprise for a moment, the he also gave an awkward smile. Seems like he isn’t used for people to thank him.

After that, we left the house. Now all I had to do was go to the capital and start my adventure! But…

“Hey, Wallace… What’s the fastest way to get to the capital?”

“Ahh?” He asked confused for a moment, then stopped to think for a moment. “Probably would be taking a ride from Rakin, near the exit of the village. You pay him ten silver and he lends you a mount to the capital”

Ten silver? Doesn’t seem too expensive for me, but the exit of the village is all the way to the other side… And I just came from there…

Hmm… I think I just had my idiotest idea ever… I looked at Wallace for a moment and made my small request…

“Yeah… Ah think Ah can do it… But are you sure about this boy? It’s only a five minute walk…” He asked doubting my sanity, but I just shrugged it. Wallace looked at me for some time, but sighed out loudly. “Okay… Okay… Whatever, Ah was needing some exercise anyway.”

I knew I was going to regret this immediately, but I couldn’t help and smile widely, as Wallace approached me and held me by the collar of my armor.

“Just to be sure, whatever happens, ain’t mah fault.”

He said one last time.

Then he threw me with one hand.

Literally, he threw me!

I could feel the wind blowing against my skin, if I looked down, I could see the village, with the NPCs and players walking around here and there. Some of them even looked up and saw me flying past them in a ridiculous speed.

I couldn’t help but start.

“I BELIEVE I CAN FLY! I BELIEVE I CAN TOUCH THE SKY!”

I sang my heart out, but as the end of the village approached, I started to fall down, so I crossed my arms in front of my head and prepared myself.

I noticed that I would fall right in front the door of a house, on the end of the village. Altough the house itself was small, there was a huge fenced area around it, and a huge building on the other side.

Right when I was about to hit the ground, I activated Nature’s bastion. Then I slammed myself on the earth and started to roll forward.

-278 (42/330)

Ouch… My everything hurts…

The loud noise I made caught the attention of whoever was inside the house, because I could barely hear the sound of the door opening and somebody running towards me. I couldn’t see because my head was buried in the ground.

“Hey, boy, are you alright? What happened?” Came the male voice.

“I… Am… Fine… But could… You get my… Common sense… for me…? I think… It might have broken… On the fall…”

..

.

After some time resting and finally managing to recover enough to regret my decision, I finally got up and looked at the man that came to my rescue. He looked human enough for me, except the fact that there was a strange blue glow coming from around his neck. Is he a dullahan?

“Sorry for scaring you like that… It’s just that I had a really bad idea...” I said while apologizing, and the man sighed in relief when he noticed that I was alright.

He offered me his hand to get up.

“Geez, young man. I was so surprised that my head almost fell off!” he said with a laugh. “Anyway, I am Rakin, Dullahan. Is there anything I can do to help you?”

“Rakin? Oh yes. I am Gondorrer. Wallace said that you could recommend me some mounts to take me to the capital, so I came here.”

“Eh? Wallace? The leatherworker?” He seemed completely surprised, but the shrugged it off. “Well, yes, I can. Please come in!”

He said while opening the fence besides his house. He guided me towards the huge building in the back and asked me to wait for a moment. After some time, he came out being followed by many different animals.

There were horses, just like usual, but there were also some bird-like animals, something that looked like a large lizard, huge cats and dogs that I could easily ride on top and so on. With a signal of his hands, all the animals lined up in front of me.

“Pick one of your liking, and they will take you to the capital. They are all well trained and can come back all alone, so no need to worry about bringing them back!”

I widened my eyes in surprise, then I took my time to look around. All the animals were impressive by themselves, some looking ferocious, other majestics. Even what I first thought that were horses, there were a Pegasus and a unicorn in the middle of them.

This guy has quite the hobby of collecting rare animals, huh?

All of the animals were standing proudly besides one another. All except one.

The last animal in the line was… A spider. A huge spider, with six legs and two claw-like appendages in the front. It’s carapace was slightly brown, and it’s back part seemed a bit too thin compared to what I had in my memory. For some reason the spider was slumping in the ground, depressed.

“What happened with this one?” I asked curious, but Rakin only smiled wryly.

“You see, all of the recent customers were too afraid of old Tex, so nobody has been choosing him for some time… Now he is a bit downhearted because of this…”

Ohh, poor Tex… Only because he is a spider, everyone was avoiding him? Normally, I am afraid of spiders like him, but seeing him that depressed kind of made me pity him.

“Then I’ll go with him… Seems like he need a boost to his morale…” As soon as I said that, Tex jumped up in surprise and looked at me, then before I could react he approached me and gave me a hug with his front claws.

While I was still at loss, he suddenly let me go and walked away to the barn, Rakin laughed loudly and told me to wait a bit.

While I was waiting, I took notice of the symbol flashing in the corner of my vision. Not that I did not notice it earlier, I just hadn’t had the time to check it.

When I opened, I was greeted with this.
