Interlude investigation

Abby looked at the giant crater in front of her, the army had been wiped out. She looked at Alice, “You know I could have killed you at least ten times before you launched that ball at me.”

Alice looked at her, “You want to kill me?”

She shrugged, “Not really, I don’t want to kill anyone, but that,” she pointed at the crater, “Looked like it could hurt.”

Bella sighed, “She just used a lot of energy that she drew from the void in this reality. She must have realized, she agrees with the void.”

Alice nodded, “Yes, that’s, exactly what happened.”

Funk sighed, “We need to find out why they were here, and where Steve and Lorraine are being held.”

Abby looked at her wrists, “Do we have some books here?” Bella and Alice nodded. “Can I take a look at the books that have been gathered?”

Bella smiled, “Sure, come with me to the makeshift library.” As Abby followed Bella, she looked at Funk and Alice, crossing their arms and staring at each other.

Abby got led into a small house with a few salvaged bookcases. She had seen Paul leave to the bunker, probably to tell the people they were not going to die. Abby grabbed a book while looking at Bella, “Who the fuck are you anyway?”

Bella chuckled, “The name is Bella,” she stretched out her hand.

Abby took it, “The name is Abby. We have not really met yet. I did see you in the other library after you were not dead, but you spoke with Steve and Alice. You left before I could chat you up.”

Bella nodded, “Yeah, things went fast. What are you looking for in the books?”

“I wonder, if people can live on if they die. Or what happens if they die.”

Bella sighed, “The whole cosmos is unbalanced currently, but they are supposed to go to the Ethereal Vortex. If you have unfinished business, then you would go to Purgatory. There are some other realms where the dead can walk.”

Abby nodded, “I think Micheal did something to me. Do you know who he is?”

Bella nodded, “Yes, I know him. I have not seen him in a few hundred years, though.”

Abby blinked a couple of times, “You are old.”

Bella sighed, “Don’t even get me started on that. Micheal is a smart man, an intelligent man. He thinks ahead, what do you think he did to you?”

“He made me immortal.”

Bella bellowed out in laughter, “That is impossible. Not even Micheal can achieve that.”

Abby drew her sword. Bella held up her hands, “You should not try it. You are not immortal, if you do that, you are going to die. You will most likely end up in Purgatory or stop existing.”

Abby smiled, “I will be fine, just you see.” Abby put her sword against her heart and ignored Bella screaming at her. She pushed the sword through her heart. She screamed in pain, it hurt like hell. Abby fell over on the ground.

Funk ran into the library, he looked at Abby. “What the fuck happened?” He slid to her on his knees. “She has no pulse. Bella, what did you do?”

“I did nothing, she started babbling about being immortal. I told her she was going to die, and that she is not immortal. She, stabbed herself.”

Alice ran inside, “What is going on, and, oh fuck, is she dead?”

Funk nodded, “She is, indeed, dead. She committed suicide, if only Steve were here, he would have talked her out of it.” Funk sighed, “What did you do, you idiot.” Funk shook his head, “Prepare a place to bury her, Alice, please.”

Funk grabbed the book that Abby had dropped on the ground. The women of the Black Death. Funk browsed through the book, it was mostly gibberish, but it came down to women that uses black energy like tentacles cannot be killed. Funk showed it to Bella, “Do you know something about this?”

Bella shook her head, “Not much. There are people with black energy, I think it is just a darker form of dark energy. These are simply old wives tales. Abby used black energy to kill that tarbosaurus.”

Alice came back, “I brought Square to the house where Abby should have stayed. There is a spot to bury Abby.”

Funk got up and lifted Abby, blood dripped to the ground. Alice looked at her, then at Funk. “Look, I did not wish for her to die, she seemed like a very nice gal. I don’t understand her reasoning for this.”

Funk ignored Alice and walked outside, he soon found the place that Alice mentioned. She had dug a grave in record time. Funk put her in the hole. “You stupid idiot, no one is immortal. Not even the thing that made me the chosen one. It got killed by a black tentacle. Or, at least, dragged away. It seems like such a long time ago now. You helpless in that cell, me saving your ass. We really bonded, Abby, and I am sorry that whatever Micheal did to you, drove you insane to the point of suicide. May we meet again in the afterlife.” Funk buried her, other people did not have to see her like this.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

Then he made a small marker that said, Abby, loyal friend. Funk sat down and grabbed a book out of his inventory.

The book is about void portals and where they lead. Paul soon joined Funk, “Hey, I heard the news.” He looked at the grave, “It is true?”

Funk nodded, “I checked the wound and let my energy flow over it. She inflicted the wound herself.”

Paul sighed, “Her parents are going to freak out. Abby, I knew her pretty well. She came by the bakery often, with Steve. They used to get baked a lot in the office. No idea why, Steve used to be such a depressed man, but he got his act together, didn’t he?”

Funk nodded, “Yeah, Lorraine helped with that. Abby wanted to do that, but Lorraine took the spot that Abby wanted.”

Paul sighed, “I have no clue what Steve has, but people just, fall for him.”

Funk chuckled, “yeah, he has that effect. Can I tell you a secret, Paul?”

“Sure, I can keep secrets very well.”

Funk nodded, “Alright, first things first, I think Steve and Lorraine are in a pocket realm. The void is keeping them there, we just need to find a way in and out. As for my secret, I think that I am-” he looked at the ground, it started to shake. Suddenly, an arm shot out of the ground.

Paul shot back, “Fuck zombies!”

Funk looked at him and drew his dark blade. “Maybe she got bit in that place with zombies?” Funk looked at Abby digging her way out of the grave.

She slowly got up, “Goddammit that motherfucking hurt, and who buried me!?”

Funk gasped, “I, what?”

Abby shook off the dirt, “I said, who, the motherfucking shit, buried me?”

“But, you were dead.”

Abby looked at Funk, “Do I look dead now?”

“No, but you are naked, where did your clothes go?”

Abby looked down, “Well, it seems I found a downside to coming back to live.”

Paul shook his head, “I am going to get a blanket.”

Funk nodded. “Abby?”

“Yes?”

“Are you, not, dead?”

“What does it look like, idiot? Why did you even bury me?”

“You had no pulse.”

Paul came back with a blanket and gave it to Abby. She spit out dirt. Bella ran over, “I felt a massive energy surge, what is,” she looked at Abby. “Holy fuck. Did you see six beings?”

Abby looked at her, “What?”

“When you died, did you see the Grand Council? Who pleaded for you?”

Paul looked at her, “What do you mean?”

Bella let out a deep sigh, “I did die, and someone pleaded for me to get brought back to life.”

Abby shook her head, “Nope, that did not happen to me. All I saw was, I’d rather not talk about it. Let’s just keep it at, it was not pretty.”

Alice ran over, “Oh my god, she is actually immortal.”

Abby grunted, “Dying hurts, a lot.”

Bella started reviewing her, “I think it's best, to not die a lot. Who knows what the long-term side effects might be?”

Abby sighed, “I need to tell you guys something.”

Everyone looked at her. “I cannot tell you how I know this. Since my memory is mostly a blank after I died. We need to let Steve and Lorraine be.”

Funk looked at her, “What?”

She nodded, “Trust me. Oh, and Alice?”

“Yes?”

“You will never get, Steve.”

“What? Why are you saying something like that, you jealous bitch. Do you want me to kill you? You will come back anyway, right?”

Abby sighed, “I am sorry, it is just, a message I got.”

Funk sighed. “Alright, I believe you.”

Alice looked at him, “What!?”

Funk looked at Alice, “If the cosmos brought her back with this information, we need to believe it.”

Abby walked away from the others, she sighed as she finally had some space. That was horrible, I’d rather not die again, even if I come back, unless necessary. At least, now, I know for sure what purpose I have in life. She now knows, she was right, she is not alone in this.

Abby looked at her wrists and let black tentacles come out of her, she smiled, “Hello, my friend.”

It whispered to her, “Hello my new best friend, I am hungry, what about you?”

Abby smiled, “Yeah, I could eat a horse, like, a literal horse, but we can never tell them what you are.” Abby looked around her with care, “No one can ever know.”
