Chapter 9

Abby stared at me, “There is a bell ringing, I doubt that is a good sign, Steve. Did your plan work yet?”

I sighed, “How should I know?”

A guard opened our cell door, “Have you heard that bell, it is time for you guys to die.”

I let out a sigh, “I am sorry, Abby, I got you into this mess.”

Abby smiled, “No worries at all, I went along willingly.”

We followed the guard, and when we turned a corner, someone hit the guard on the head with the hilt of a sword.

Funk looked around the corner, “Hello there, it seems like you guys might need some assistance.”

I chuckled, “Man, am I glad to see you.”

Funk looked around, “Follow me, I can take you to the secret exit.”

I looked at my exposed arms and legs, “But, what about my clothes.”

Funk laughed, “Sorry, Steve, there is no time.” Funk started running.

I looked at Abby, “He is kidding, right? You have clothes.”

She looked at me with an angry look on her face, “I have leaves, Steve, leaves! Just run!”

Funk stopped near a wall, he pushed a brick in the wall and a revolving door opened up, he looked at us, “Here, take this,” he grabbed two swords from the wall. “We might encounter monsters on the road.”

“Funk?”

“Yes?”

“Why are you helping us?”

“I am helping you because I need to, that is all, now follow me.”

While we followed him, Abby glanced at me, “What does that mean?”

Funk looked back as we made our way through the tunnel, “It means, you guys are from a different reality, and to get where I need to go, I need you.”

I shrugged, “I guess, we have our answer, now let’s see where this tunnel will take us.”

We followed Funk for a long hour until we saw a small light at the end of this tunnel. Funk stopped me, he looked at Abby, she nodded and went on, Funk pushed me against the wall. “Do you think I am stupid?”

“No, off course not?” “Why?”

Funk came very close and whispered, I felt very threatened, “I can feel the darkness growing in your heart, you might be a charming man, and we are in this together. If you decide to end the world, then we are going to have problems.”

I shook my head, “What? I don’t intend to blow up this world, we came here to save it, remember? You might not know it, but I am the hero, I am the chosen one.”

Funk chuckled, “Good luck with making yourself believe that, if you need to kill people, I am fine with that, if you go too far, then we have problems.”

I grunted, “Fine, let me go.”

Funk grabbed my arm and held me tight, “Are we clear on this? You are not the hero here, you can try to be one as much as you like, but I think we both know, you are lying to yourself.”

With force, I ripped myself loose. “Fine, can we go?”

Funk scoffed, “Fine, just follow the light.”

I walked over to Abby, who stood at the edge of the tunnel with her sword drawn, She looked at me, “Is everything alright?”

“Yes, I think so.”

Funk walked over, “We should head to Brickton, we need to cross the Brick Plains, We can just follow the road, and we need to be careful of monsters, It should take us a few days before we reach Brickton. Once we are there, we should head to the guild master, his name is Rictor.”

We both looked at him, I spoke up, “Who died and made you the boss?”

Funk smiled, “I am the leader, since I busted your ass out of jail, now follow me.” Abby shrugged and followed Funk.

I grumbled as I walked after Abby, “Fine, I am following you, green head.”

Funk chuckled, “I like your humor, but you are the one walking around in your weird underpants.”

“They are not weird, that is a Pikmin pattern! But you would not know that, since you are not from our reality!”

Abby sighed, “Are you guys going to keep throwing snide remarks like that at each other the entire journey?”

We both answered, “Yes.”

Abby nodded, “Alright, you guys are both alpha males, fight it out with each other.”

I looked at her, “What, me an alpha male? I mean, of course, but what makes you say that?”

Funk called out, “Since you are a dick.”

Abby chuckled, “Because you both want to be the leader, and you are both flawed, like alpha versions of a game”

I crossed my arms and decided to ignore that last part, “Well, once we get to Brickton, I am going to tell you what we are going to do after that.”

Funk spoke up, “We’ll visit Poluma for some training after we have saved Alice.”

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

I put my hands on my waist, “That is the same thing I would have said, except for the name of that city, what happened to you anyway, Funk, why did you come to save us?”

Funk sighed, “Enough, perhaps, you should look around you instead of looking at my beautiful shell.”

Abby laughed, “He is a fun one, even though he betrayed us.”

I pointed at Funk with an angry finger, “Exactly! You have betrayed us, asshole!”

Funk gritted his teeth, “And I got you out, balancing out your remarks about me betraying you.”

Of course, I ignored him and looked around me and I saw some trees, and ponds, with weird ass floating waterfalls. There is no clear place where these waterfalls originated. The road we walked on was a huge brick road. It also had paths that led every way. We could even go to the east and west, but I had no clue where that would take us.

The sounds I heard were from the wildlife, Canadian geese, They are everywhere, even in a different reality, It makes no sense but, whatever. There are frogs here too, so, there might be more similarities.

Abby pinched me softly, “Are you alright?”

“Yes, I think so, why?”

She looked at Funk then back at me, “Well since he got here, you have been a bit, gloomy, what did he say to you in the tunnel?”

“It is not relevant.”

Abby shook her head, “It is to me, as it seems to bother you a lot.”

I sighed, “It doesn’t matter.”

Funk called out, “Incoming monsters.”

Abby looked at me, “We are going to continue this conversation later.”

Some monsters did indeed come our way, I recognized them instantly from playing video games, they were kobolds. These looked like anthropomorphic rats, They had brown skin and walked on two paws, or do rats have claws? Whatever, they are standing upright like a human, They played with their pickaxes, they even wear small leather armor.

I smiled, “These are no match for us, look how tiny they are compared to us, like these rats, they can’t be a problem for us!”

Funk sighed, “Do not underestimate your opponent by judging their cover.”

There were three of them, and three of us, I got the left one. I walked over, and the kobold immediately started swinging its pickaxe at me, I jumped back but lost my footing and staggered. The kobold took advantage of this situation and slammed the pickaxe into my right leg, Blood gushed out, and I grunted in pain.

I punched the kobold with my right fist, and he staggered back, Before I could respond properly, the kobold came back and ripped out the pickaxe, That hurt like a bitch as even more blood gushed out of my wounds. The kobold tried to swing his pickaxe at me again, but I tried to block the incoming blow with my sword. However, I fumbled, my sword dropped to the ground.

As the pickaxe came back, I raised my left hand and the pickaxe went through the palm of my hand. “Oh fuck you,” I punched the kobold hard enough with my other hand that he fell on his back. I ripped out the pickaxe and looked at the kobold, “You are going to regret that!”

Quickly, I ran towards the kobold and slammed down the pickaxe with force, right in his right eye. I chuckled as it hit and blood flew everywhere, I kept on swinging the pickaxe down. Blood flew everywhere, I started laughing, “Yeah, take that you filthy rat, how dare you put this thing in my leg? Take this, and that, just one more for the final touch!” With a lot of force, I rammed it down into its heart.

Then I picked up my sword. When I looked at Funk, he seemed to have easily decapitated his kobold, and Abby had made many small cuts to kill her kobold, she was just playing with her nails.

Funk looked at her, “Did that not bother you at all?”

Abby looked up, “Oh, his tendencies to keep on slashing at his dead opponent? No, it got boring after a few times.”

I sighed, “It is called a double tap.”

Abby laughed at me, “More like, well, whatever tapping ten times is.”

Funk shook his head, “Just loot their inventory, we should make camp soon.” While he continued talking, we did so, but all I found was some gold pieces. “Dusk is setting soon. It will take us a while to find a decent, safe place, then we need to set up camp.”

Abby looked around, “I am not going to sleep on the ground.”

Funk sighed, “We can get a tent and other items in Brickton, You guys were busy being in jail.”

I chuckled while putting my sword on my right shoulder, “You are never going to let that go, are you?”

Funk smiled, “Nope.”

Abby shook her head, “Fine, but we need to check if there are not too many bugs in the grass.” Funk hung his head and started walking.

I whispered to Abby, “You do know he is some kind of insect, right?”

Abby put her right hand before her mouth while gasping, “Whoops, I never thought about that,” She quickly ran after Funk, “let me explain, please!”

I shook my head and followed them in search for a campsite.
