Many hours passed while we played Dungeons and Dragons, by the time, we had finished this first part, it was seven hours later. Riley had drank quite some beer. I looked at Lory, “Well, we managed to get the first moonstone from the chest after fighting the moon dragon. Who knew that Mydude would succeed in casting his unique spell to summon hundreds of cats to swarm him.”

Riley chuckled, “This was wonderful.” He got up, “It made me think of something else than my personal problems. Do we do this again next week on Friday?”

Lory nodded, “I am fine with that.”

“Yeah, great.”

I smiled, “I will help you clean this up, Lory, let me guide Riley to the exit first. You should not drive by the way.”

He nodded, “I will walk, it is not that far.”

I walked outside, following Riley. He waved at me as he walked away. My phone rang, it was quite late. When I looked at who was calling me at this hour, the caller ID said F. I picked up. “Did you find something?”

“Yes, we managed to track down those portals you were talking about, they left an energy trace called esoteric energy. We are working on replicating it. The dagger you sent us, it is made from material not found on Earth. You’ve done it S, you might have found a way for Lory to go back home. It is up to you, if you tell her or not.”

I sighed, “Thanks F, is my new gear ready, just in case?”

“Yes, it is perfect, do you think you are going to need? You are not going to come out of retirement, are you?”

“It all depends on those outsiders, if they come back, I might need to kill them to get the message across.”

“Alright S, if it comes to that, I will handle the police, you won’t face repercussions. The president has been informed of your encounter, we are on standby, if any portal is opened, we can track it.”

“Great, F, I just want Lory to be safe. Oh, I need to inform you of something else.”

“Another supernatural event S? I thought you were done with those missions.”

I chuckled, “Yeah, it seems the supernatural is not done with me. As for what I want to report F, I have a talking cat.”

“Could you please repeat that, S?”

“Like I said, I found a talking cat, and it is smart.”

“Alright S, we will put it in a document, I am going to work on finding out what is up with your talking cat. He must be from another reality.”

“Thanks F, you can come by on Monday when Lory is at work, oh, and bring the shotgun. You know, the new one I read about.”

“I will do that S, I will see you then, F out.”

I hung up the phone and looked into the starry sky. “Let’s just hope it does not come to violence.” Then I walked back inside.

Lory looked at me, “That took quite some time.”

“Oh yeah, we talked about the campaign.”

Lory walked towards me, “That is your lying face.”

“How do you know what my lying face looks like?”

“Because you do it, when something from your old work comes up. Is it bad?”

“No, I don’t think so. The president has been informed of the otherworldly visitors. I am authorized to use lethal force if needed.”

Lory blinked a couple of times, “What?”

I sighed, “They might come here to try to kidnap you. If they do, I can kill them to get the message across, this world is off limits. And, there is something else. I think, we can make portals soon, including to your home.”

Lory sat down on a chair. “I don’t want to go there, this is my home.”

I smiled at her, “Good, but I have always tried to keep you and my old work separate.”

Lory nodded, “I know, you have secret meetings.”

I scratched my head, “If they are secret, how do you know about it?”

She smiled, “I am not dumb.”

I just nodded slowly, “True, very true. Fine, an associate is showing up Monday to look at Bob.”

He looked up, “He is not going to stick something in my butt, right?”

“No, he will just read your energy signature with his new device, and try to find out where you came from.”

Lory yawned, “We should clean up our board game and go to sleep.”

I walked over and hugged her, “Just, go to bed, I will clean up.” She nodded and gave me a kiss. She moved to the bedroom, Bob followed her. As I started cleaning up, I noticed something when I looked outside the window. When I walked over to the fridge, I opened a secret drawer under it and picked up a small pistol with a silencer. I hid it under my shirt by tucking it in my pants. While pretending to bring the trash outside, I snuck around to the place where what I had seen movement.

Silently, I made my way over to someone talking. “Where did he go?”

Another voice replied, “He is just taking out the trash. This man does not seem as dangerous as our commander claimed. He is just a normal dude, at least we found Lorraine.”

I snuck up to who talked first, he did not even notice as I stood behind him. Those wolf ears might hear better, but damn, he is just focused on the house. With a quick movement, I grabbed his neck and snapped it. These guys are scouts, if I let them return unharmed, they will say the coast is clear.

The other wolf guy looked at me. “What is going on!?” I drew my pistol and shot him in his knee, then his other knee. He screamed in pain, “Fuck, where did you come from?”

“Dude, I came out of the woods. You were not being very, what is the word? Fuck it, I saw you.”

I pointed my gun at his head, “Do bullets work on you guys?” He just growled at me. “I am going to take that as yes.” I fired the pistol and the bullet went through his brain, brain matter and gore flew everywhere. He fell down on the ground. I sighed, “Fucking scouts.”

I grabbed my smartphone and called F. After a few rings, I hung up.

He called back. “What is it S?”

“They were watching my house. The scouts must have snuck in before you were able to detect them.”

“Did you say were, S?”

“Yes, I took care of it.”

“Alright, I will send a unit your way. Did they put up much of a fight?”

I looked down at the dead bodies, “They never saw me coming, it seems, you can sneak up on people with big ears. The downside, they might have passed on already where Lorraine is.”

“Copy that S, we will have a unit guard your house.”

“Thanks F, I will get the bodies to the front of my house and wait for the dispatch unit to show up, S out.” I hung up.

I grabbed the two bodies, they were heavier than I had expected, but I managed. While dragging them to the front of our house, I saw the door of our house open, I dropped the bodies and drew my pistol. As Lory walked out, I sighed and lowered my weapon.

She looked at me, “What is going on? I swear I heard gunshots.” She looked at the bodies, “They were already here?”

“Yes, they must have been watching us for a while already. I only noticed them accidentally.”

Lory walked over and looked at them, “They truly do look like me. You killed them?”

“Yes, I did not mean for you to see them.” A black van drove into the street. They stopped in front of our house, the side door opened up and two people in black suits came out, they both had short black hair and were wearing sunglasses.

I put my pistol away and walked over to them, I gave both of them a firm handshake by grabbing their wrists. “L and J, it has been a while. When was the last time?”

J chuckled, the left one. “I think on our special mission to Ireland.”

I sighed, “I hate Banshees.”

J nodded, “She showed me how I was going to die, right before you smote her.”

I smirked, “Yeah, you managed to trap her with that ritual, L over there had made a pure golden blade.”

Lory walked over, “Who are these people?”

“Old friends of mine. They are working the dispatch unit.” L walked over to the corpses, and he grabbed the two bodies, he is a burly man.

Lory tilted her head, “Dispatch?”

“Yep, if you got a body, call them, and that body disappears.”

Lory sighed, “Your past is complicated, Steve.”

I grunted, “They, did not know my name. It is a thing, we don’t tell our names.”

L and J looked at me, they both spoke, “We heard nothing.”

“Good. Just, S, is fine.”

L put the bodies in the van. “Once we dispose of them, we will guard the house.”

L and J got into the van and drove away. Lory looked at me, “What is the plan?”

“This will be a good enough message for the wolf people. They won’t send anyone else, and just in case, we have guards. Everything will be alright, Lorraine.”

I hugged her, and she let out a deep sigh. “I am glad you are protecting us, but you have a mysterious past. You told me many things, but you never told me you messed with supernatural beings.”

“Those missions are highly classified. The dictator was not a human, I am not allowed to say more. You have to understand, this could turn into a war between realities.”

Lory looked at me, “I am sorry, for getting you dragged into your old work.”

“Don’t be, I am just protecting you, and our little one. The coming days should be peaceful, we should get some sleep.”

Lory nodded, we made our way back to the house and I put the pistol away. When we crashed in bed, Bob joined us.
