SR Chapter 39: Goblin's Die

Elijah let his mind bask in the image of him sitting on a throne for two seconds before he quickly brought himself back to reality. The warriors had already started attacking and he didn’t have the luxury to daydream. Without wasting anymore time Elijah quickly used his Ruler’s Strength skill.

Within a few seconds Elijah lost a great deal of energy. However, his warriors received another boost to their strength. Now, all Elijah had to do was kick back, relax and watch his boys go to work.

Arrows rained down on the goblins as they continued to march toward the wall. Like a general Elijah stood back and carefully observed the battlefield. After a minute passed, there were several details about the battle that stood out to Elijah.

First, Elijah noticed that the battlefield was quieter than he expected it to be. Yes, Elijah heard the twang of the bows, the sound of arrows flying through the air and the occasional cry of wounded goblins. However, based on the movies and tv shows he watched, he expected more.

Perhaps it was because there wasn’t any battle music. Elijah made a mental note to have musicians join his armed forces. He was sure the battlefield would become livelier, and his warriors should obtain a significant boost.

Second, Elijah noticed that the goblin leader didn’t attack the walls. Elijah guessed that this was because the goblin leader was worried about wasting too much energy or he didn’t think his fire spells would do much damage from a distance. If either of these two reasons were correct, it would be good news for Elijah.

Third, Elijah noticed that the goblins weren’t helplessly enduring the rain of arrows and had their own way of fighting back. With his recovering eyes Elijah could make out the sling shots the goblins were using. They were being used by some of the women and all of the children.

Occasionally, women and children would step out from behind the shield, fire a shot and quickly return. Rocks fired from the sling shots weren’t a lethal threat or even a significant threat. However, they were an unexpected threat, and they made the battle harder than Elijah and the other leaders expected.

Rocks slammed into the wall and soared passed Elijah and the others. Occasionally, rocks would hit the warriors disrupting their shots. Even less frequently, the rocks would hit the warriors in the head stunning them for a few seconds.

Fourth, Elijah paid attention to the openings and weaknesses that the goblins revealed. After enduring the force of one arrow the goblins would occasionally drop their shields and reveal an opening. Also, Elijah noticed that cracks developed on the goblins shields after defending against a few arrows. A clear indication that the shields the goblins were using had low durability.

These were a few of the many details Elijah paid attention to as he observed the battle. As Elijah continued to observe the battle, he saw the good and bad in both sides. Using this information, Elijah came up with a few ideas on how his people could improve.

“Everyone double up and target the same goblin!” Elijah commanded.

Instantly Elijah’s side became disorderly. Everyone was confused and were trying to figure out how to adjust to the command Elijah gave. Elijah frowned when he saw this, but he didn’t allow any negative emotions to disrupt his actions and quickly moved to clarify his orders.

“Trent your number one!” Everyone was in a loose line in front of Elijah, and he pointed to the man furthest to the right. “Shin will be number two, Tyler number one and Atom number two. Each pair should choose a goblin and focus their attacks on them. Now, count out the numbers one two so everybody knows who their partner is and do it quickly. Trent, begin!”

Trent quickly called out number one, but Shin didn’t react quickly and called out number two slower. Tyler and Atom picked up the pace and everyone else quickly fell into sink.

“Keep attacking the goblins. Don’t wait to call out your number. Also, keep attacking while you decide what goblin to attack with your partner.”

Elijah wasn’t shouting but his voice was very loud and clear. It was possible that the goblins herd his voice, but Elijah wasn’t worried. He was using the human language, so most of the goblins probably didn’t understand what he was saying.

Also, Elijah was confident the goblins wouldn’t be able to come up with a counter to his strategy in the heat of the battle. Despite his confidence, Elijah knew it was good to be cautious. That’s why he did his best to make sure his next words weren’t herd by the goblins.

“The point of attacking the goblins together is to increase the chances of successfully wounding them. Person number one attacks a goblin, and the goblin will defend with their shield. After that the goblin will be weakened and lower their shield. This creates an opportunity for person number two to land a clean hit. Understood?!”

“Understood Chief.”

Nodding in satisfaction, Elijah returned his attention to the battle. He stopped talking and waited for the results of his commands to unfold. Elijah wasn’t disappointed.

You have commanded your people to attack in groups of two.

There is a chance for the second person in a group to deal 50% more damage.

Giving a command in battle didn’t guarantee a buff. A perfect example would be when Elijah first commanded his people to get into pairs. In fact, it was possible that Elijah’s command could have led to his people receiving a debuff. Thankfully that didn’t happen.

Less than a second after Elijah read the battle notification, he began using his Ruler’s Strength skill on everyone who was in the number two position. This was a decision he made on the spot. He recognized the opportunity and acted quickly so it didn’t slip through his fingers.

On the second wall, excluding Elijah, Elder Jeb, Elder Jamal and Justin, there were fifty people attacking the goblins. Of those fifty people most of them were warriors. The rest were a few elders, adult villagers and three goblin slaves that returned with Justin and the others.

Seconds after Elijah finished applying Ruler’s Strength to his people, he saw a few goblins being riddled with arrows. Several of his people in the number two position managed to land a clean hit on a goblin. Most of those goblins cried out in pain, losing focus, and leaving themselves open to an attack.

What was shocking about this event was that many of the goblins weren’t killed. Plenty of the female and young goblins died but the male goblins that were charging forward at the front managed to endure the arrows. Most likely this was due to the benefits of skills or their jobs. At least, that was Elijah’s best guess.

What was even more shocking than the goblins’ ability to endure the arrows was their ability to adapt. Within a few minutes the difficulty of getting the goblins to drop their shield sharply increased. Elijah had to admit that he underestimated the intelligence of the goblins. However, it didn’t matter that they adapted since the damage had already been done.

More than a hundred goblins laid on the ground, unmoving with arrows sticking out of their bodies. Elijah was satisfied with the destruction his command created. He had a few more ideas on how his people could improve their ability to kill the goblins, but he decided to hold his tongue and wait.

Elijah already saw the positive and negative effects that a command from him could have on his people. If he was going to give another command than Elijah would make sure he thought it through and issued it to his people in a clear, and straightforward manner. For now, Elijah would stay quiet and continue observing the battle.

By Elijah’s side, Elder Jeb used his sword to block the occasional rocks that were about to hit Elijah. He stepped forward, swung his sword, and returned to Elijah’s side. Although Elijah’s attention was focused on the battle, he didn’t miss Elder Jeb’s occasional nod of respect or the look of satisfaction on his face.

Pride surged through Elijah’s mind when he saw this. “Hmph, leading troops into battle isn’t so hard.” Elijah thought to himself. “All you have to do is say the right thing at the right moment, make sure none of your people die and look cool while doing it. Easy!”

“Chief,” Elder Jeb quietly called out. “Do you think we should have some people use their shields to block the rocks?”

“No need,” Elijah replied. “The chance of our people getting hit by rocks is low. If they do get hit, the damage, they receive will be low as well. It’s a far better use of their time an energy to continue attacking.”

Elder Jeb nodded in agreement. “Then what about commanding them to attack the goblins throwing the rocks? They should have weaker defenses. Also, this will stop them from disrupting the attacks of our people and increase our killing power.”

Before Elijah could respond to Elder Jeb several battle notifications appeared in front of him. Even if Elijah didn’t read the battle notifications, he was able to see and feel their effects on the battlefield. The goblins acted like they took a shot of adrenaline.

Gone was the slow steady approach the goblins initially took. Now, the goblins recklessly raced toward the wall, radiating a desire for blood and destruction. Many of them didn’t even bother to defend themselves with their shields.

Unfortunately, for them, their reckless charge only increased the rate at which they ran into the traps that the villagers built. Some goblins fell into holes and were pierced by the sharpened wood at the bottom. Others had their feet stabbed or their legs broken by traps designed to capture their feet. Also, there were trigger traps that released darts and arrows at the goblin’s backs. This caught some of the goblins, but not all. Some still had control of their minds and remembered to protect themselves from arrows from above.

Cries of surprise and pain echoed throughout the battlefield. Elijah’s people didn’t hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity in front of them. Many of the goblins that managed to endure the strategy Elijah implemented before, were helpless to resist the rain of arrows after they were caught by the villagers’ traps. Sadly, Elijah’s people only enjoyed the period of unrestrained slaughter for a few seconds before it started to rain fire.
