SR Chapter 2: First Day

Opening his eyes Elijah found himself looking at a clear blue sky. The grass he was laying on felt soft and the sun rays were gentle and warm. Elijah took a deep breath, and the air energized his body as it filled his lungs.

Laying on the ground Elijah closed his eyes as he enjoyed the wonderful sensations he was experiencing. As advertised, the Fallen Heaven game allowed Elijah’s senses to experience the world in a way he couldn’t in real life. After a minute passed Elijah stood up with a smile on his face.

Elijah looked around and saw that he was in a forest clearing. He was wearing a green cotton shirt, brown pants and brown shoes. Other than those three items, he had nothing else. No food, no water, no weapons and no tools.

Walking around the clearing Elijah tried to see if there were any hidden objects or items that he could use. His future self never started the game in the wilderness, so he could only give Elijah information based on other people’s experiences. Therefore, Elijah hoped he could find some kind of hidden secret.

Nothing. Elijah found absolutely nothing. There wasn’t even a sharp stone or fallen branch that he could use as a weapon. After his failed search Elijah turned his attention to the flashing exclamation mark in the corner of his eye.

“The first thing I need to do is find a village.” Elijah spoke to himself after he finished looking over everything.

Giving the clearing a final glance, Elijah left and began his search. The clearing had one path leading out of it. The path was covered in grass, but it was free of trees, bushes and other obstructions.

After a few minutes of walking, Elijah arrived at another clearing. Unlike the clearing he left, this clearing wasn’t an empty grassy area. In the center of the clearing there was a skeleton leaning against a tall tree. Next to the skeleton were three perfectly displayed items. A sword, a book, and a bag. It was a trap.

Honestly, Elijah found it hard to believe that this obvious trap managed to catch so many people. However, after he quickly thought about it, he realized he would be one of those people that would be caught in the trap without the memories from his future self. After all, he recently wasted a few minutes searching for some hidden item at the first clearing. Elijah thanked his future self as he slowly made his way around the edge of the clearing to the path that continued on the other side.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

The trap activated whenever a person picked up one of the three items. The tree the skeleton was resting on would start to glow and the person would have five seconds to leave the area. If they were slow, and most people were, they would be skewered by the branches and roots of the tree. The people that manage to grab an item and successfully escape would find the item they grabbed was useless.

Once Elijah made his way around the clearing, he continued walking on a grass path through the forest. So far, Elijah was having a relaxing walk through the forest. Other than the caution he showed to the trap in the second clearing, he spent his time admiring the beauty of the new world he was in.

Suddenly, Elijah saw a rabbit with black fur jump in front of him from the forest to the side. The rabbit was slightly larger than a normal rabbit. It had red eyes and a small white horn on its head. It let out a screech that revealed the sharp teeth in its mouth before charging at Elijah.

Elijah was surprised, but he still managed to defend himself in time. He crossed his arms in front of him and blocked the rabbits head but. The horn on the rabbit’s head tore the sleeve of Elijah’s shirt and cut into his arm.

You have received -1 (-5) damage.

When the rabbit attacked him, Elijah saw damage notification appear in front of him. The original five damage decreased to two because of his clothing’s defense and the natural defense he obtained from his endurance and vitality. Elijah quickly created distance between himself and the rabbit before using identify.

“Okay, first fight, let’s do this.” Elijah psyched himself up for the fight.

Elijah lifted up his fist and put one leg in front of the other. The rabbit charged at him again and Elijah stepped forward to deliver a kick. His foot slammed into the body of the rabbit and sent it flying into the tree.

You have dealt -3(-4) critical damage.

Critical damage occurred when someone hit another individual at a critical point on their body. The normal damage they usually dealt would then be doubled. Elijah knew he didn’t hit the rabbit at a critical point and was confused by the notification. However, it didn’t take long for him to realize he dealt critical damage due to the difference in size between the rabbit and himself.

The rabbit was daze for a second after hitting the tree. However, it quickly got up and rushed back to attack Elijah again. Noticing it’s approach, Elijah immediately entered his fighting stance.

What followed was a battle of epic proportion. A battle that involved blood sweat and tears. A battle so great, famous bards and writers would kill for the opportunity to tell the world about it. The great battle ended with Elijah raising the corpse of his vanquished enemy high in the air.

“First Kill!” Elijah shouted.

You have killed a horn rabbit. This corpse contains 25 points of astral energy. Do you want to absorb it? Yes or No

Elijah was proud of his first kill. The battle wasn’t difficult, but it felt more real than all of the other battles he had in high tech virtual reality games. The hostility of the rabbit, the pain he felt when the rabbit attacked him and the feedback, he received from kicking the rabbit. Everything made Elijah feel like he was fighting a real battle.

Focusing on the prompt to absorb energy, Elijah selected no. Absorbing energy from corpses of defeated enemies was a quick way for players like Elijah to increase their level. Of course, doing so would be harmful to the player in the long run.

As soon as Elijah selected no, three more enemies exited the forest. Behind him was three grey wolves with hungry yellow eyes. All of them were growling as they bared their sharp teeth at Elijah.

Knowing that it took him nine attacks to kill the horned rabbit, Elijah doubted he had the strength to kill the three wolves. Therefore, only one option was left for him. Letting out a powerful war cry, Elijah turned around and ran for his life.

Sadly, the wolves weren’t intimidated by Elijah’s shout, and they immediately began chasing him. Elijah’s short head start was useless, and the wolves quickly closed the distance. The wolves immediately started attacking once they were close enough and Elijah began using evasive maneuvers.

Jump, spin, duck and roll. Elijah did his best to continue moving forward as he avoided the wolves’ endless assault. The wolves flew by his side and over his head as Elijah stumbled along the path. Of course, Elijah wasn’t able to dodge all of the wolves.

You have received -3(-7) damage.

You have received -6(-10) damage.

You have received -4(-8) damage.

Every attack rocked Elijah's mind with pain. However, Elijah gritted and endure the pain as he continued to run. Eventually Elijah stumbled to the end of the path with less than sixty health points left. At the end of the path was a forest packed with bushes, vines and trees. Elijah didn’t hesitate and continued to run forward.

Pushing his way through the foliage of the forest was difficult for Elijah, but the difficulty was even greater for the wolves. Finally, Elijah was able to create some distance between his persistent pursuers and himself. However, he noticed that the foliage was becoming less dense.

Thinking on his feet Elijah came up with what he thought was a brilliant plan. When he saw the wolves picking up speed, he threw the corpse of the horned rabbit over their heads. He saw the three wolves pause before they turned around and immediately began tearing into it. Elijah let out a victorious laugh when he saw that his plan had worked. However, his laugh quickly turned into a scream as he ran himself off a cliff.

SPLASH!

Luckily for Elijah, there was a river below the cliff and the drop wasn't too big. Once Elijah calmed down, he immediately began laughing as he swam towards the riverbank. The run and the fall were very stimulating. Elijah really felt like his life was in danger even though he was in a game.

Once Elijah reached the bank, he heard a roar from his side. Turning his head, he saw a brown bear a short distance away from him. The happiness Elijah felt from the run and the fall started to dim. With a sigh Elijah quickly pulled himself onto the bank and began running, again.

Eventually, Elijah managed to escape from the bear and took refuge underneath a tree. Unfortunately, that tree was filled with hostile monkeys, and he was forced to begin running again. The next place he stopped to rest at was a cave. However, that cave was filled with spiders, and he was forced to run again. Snakes, bulls, boars and other animals. Elijah spent his first day in the game running from all of them.
