SR Chapter 15: Killing Goblins

SR Chapter 15: Killing Goblins

You have exited your territory and you will lose the abilities and skills of your chief job in the next six hours. Also, you will experience a 10% decrease to all stats if you fail to return. Time remaining: 0:30:59

Elijah received this notification three hours before he fought the goblins. There is a natural amount of time a leader is given to be outside their territory. This was information Elijah received from his future self.

Another piece of information he received was that the Will of the People skill and similar skills didn’t stack with the natural amount of time given to a leader. His future self didn’t know why the game was like this, so neither did he. Elijah thought it was stupid, but he knew it would be pointless to waste time complaining about it. If his future self couldn’t change anything, then he wouldn’t be able to either.

Playing with the hand he was dealt, Elijah waited for as long as possible before he activated the Will of the People skill. Elijah kept his eye on the remaining time and waited until he had five minutes left before he activated the Will of the People skill. The moment the skill was activated, Elijah received a notification similar to the one he received approximately six hours ago. The only difference was that he had twenty-four hours instead of six hours to stay outside his territory.

“How long are we going to wait here?” One of the players asked.

“Night has barely begun,” one of the warriors replied. “None of us enjoy sitting here waiting in the dirt, but we do it because it’s necessary.” Listening to the warriors voice it was clear he was becoming annoyed. “All of us are doing our best to protect our homes, so it would be great if you stopped whining like a little child and stayed quiet.”

“Hmph, this game sucks,” the player muttered.

Currently, Elijah and the group was waiting in the forest near a cave centered in a clearing. The tracks of the ten goblins they killed them led them to the nearby cave. Justin had one of the warriors sneak in and he saw five goblins in the cave.

Justin guessed that this was a meeting area for goblins, and they should wait for more to show up before they attacked. There were several tracks on the ground spreading in different directions that helped Justin come to this conclusion. The tracks indicated that there were more groups like the one they killed earlier.

The warriors had no problem waiting, but the same couldn’t be said for the players. Immediately they protested and suggested they do something else while they wait. Such as, looking for goblins in other areas or killing random beast in the forest to farm energy.

Sadly, Justin ignored their suggestions. Killing random beasts would leave traces of their presence and alert the goblins. Looking for other goblins was another bad suggestion. Every experienced hunter knows it’s best to focus on one prey and not get distracted by other potential gains. Although the players suggestions were ignored, Justin didn’t ignore the players and gave them task that they found entertaining.

Elijah and the others arrived before dusk, and they didn’t see their first goblin until an hour after dusk. At first, both the players and warriors were excited when they saw the goblins start to arrive. However, as time passed, and more goblins entered the cave the groups emotions began to change.

Dozens of goblins at level twenty or greater entered the cave. Five of those dozens of goblins were able to reach level thirty. In total there were seventy-five goblins that entered the cave.

“We will give them a few minutes to settle down and relax before we attack.” Justin spoke after a few minutes passed without any more goblins entering the cave. “Everyone, start preparing for battle.”

“We can’t do this,” one of the warriors said. “The number of goblins that entered the cave is almost double of what we expected.”

“I agree,” another warrior added. “Justin maybe we should-”

“I forgot how cowardly you all could be,” Justin interrupted.

“You can’t call us cowards every time you don’t get your way. You can’t force us to recklessly charge to our deaths.”

“So, what do you think we should do? Should we hide and do nothing while the goblins march toward our home?”

Listening to the argument, Elijah’s mind changed several times. At first, he agreed with Justin and thought it was strange that the warriors had suddenly become cowards. However, after he thought it over, he realized their reactions were normal. After all, none of the warriors were tempered in true battle and it was natural for them to have some fear. Most of them gained experience in their warrior jobs by fighting beast in the forest. Truthfully, the only strange warrior was Justin.

“Stop arguing,” Elijah said. “We’re going to attack and nothing you say is going to change that. All of you stepped forward to become warriors of the village and that means all of you must use your lives to defend it. If you fail to do so the people that will pay the price are your family and friends in the village.

Elijah had Supreme Speech activated as he spoke. Initially, the warriors were frustrated by Elijah’s response. However, their frustration quickly disappeared as they continued to listen to Elijah speak. Eventually, the warriors hung their head in shame when they realized how poorly they were behaving.

“Now, we have some time left before we attack. Let’s use that time to go over our battle plan again. I’m sure all of you will quickly regain your confidence.”

Standing in front of the cave, Elijah watched as Justin and two other warriors entered. They had quickly and quietly killed the two goblins guarding their entrance before they entered. The plan was to have Justin and the other warriors kill a few goblins before running away.

After less than a minute passed, Elijah saw three figures running toward the entrance of the cave. Elijah began backing up as he listened to the multiple feet hitting the ground. As Justin and the two other warriors exited the cave Elijah heard the angry cries of the goblins chasing them.

Preparing for the incoming goblins, Elijah made sure his passive skills were activated. Next, he lifted up his bow and began firing arrows over the warriors’ heads. He fired three arrows into the cave before he continued to back away.

Elijah only glanced at the battle notifications as he continued to back up and fire arrows into the cave. Not all of his arrows hit the goblins. Instead of receiving a damage notification, he would receive a missed notification when his arrows didn’t injure a goblin.

“Start running.”

Justin was a few steps away from Elijah when he spoke. According to the plan, the four of them would continue to fire arrows at the goblins as they backed away. So, Elijah was surprised when Justin told him to runaway immediately. Elijah hesitated for a second before he decided to run away. However, when he tried to do so, Elijah found himself unable to move.

You have been affected by Goblin Frenzy.

Stunned for 6 seconds

Attack and Defense decreased by 50%

Fear and confusion entered Elijah’s mind as he read the battle notifications. However, those feelings quickly vanished when his Supreme Will talent activated. Elijah regained his ability to move, but his attack and defense didn’t improve.

“He’s stunned. Let’s carry him back,” Justin said.

“I’m alright,” Elijah responded.

“Then let’s head back. We need to regroup so we can reduce the effects of the Goblin Frenzy.”

“Okay, but first,” Elijah focused on the goblins exiting the cave and gave them a command. “Stay where you are! Don’t follow us!”

Using Supreme Will and Supreme Speech, Elijah managed to make the goblins stop their charge. As Elijah ran away with the other warriors, he saw the goblins stopped moving for approximately two seconds before they continued their charge. It wasn’t a long period of time, but Elijah still took pride in what he accomplished.

This was something Elijah planned to do in advance. He wanted to test out a theory and grant the warriors more time to escape the cave. Elijah guessed that his Supreme Speech skill could be used in battle and his Supreme Will could amplify the effects. However, the cost for using his skill and talent was a light headache. He didn’t lose stamina or mental energy, but there were definitely consequences for his actions.

Enduring the headache Elijah continued to run toward the forest where he saw the warriors and players preparing to release their arrows on the goblins behind them. Arrows flew over Elijah’s head and fell on the goblins chasing them. A few goblins cried out in pain, but none of them stopped charging forward.

“Quiet!” One of the goblins shouted.

Elijah was shocked when he heard one of the goblins speak. He didn’t expect goblins to know the human language and he was surprised by how strange the goblin’s voice was. The scratchy voice seemed like something out of a scary movie to Elijah.

What wasn’t strange was the command the goblin gave. Although night recently began, Elijah knew that many predators were already active. The goblins may want to kill them, but they didn’t want to draw the unnecessary attention from other animals. Elijah and the others felt the same way.

In mutual agreement the two opposing forces caried out a mostly silent battle. Feet hitting the ground, the sound of weapons and the cries of pain were the few sounds that appeared on the battlefield. The warriors continued to fire at the goblins until Elijah, Justin and the other two warriors reached them.

On their way to the rest of the group Elijah saw the warriors by the forest stop shooting for three seconds. Elijah was confused by the pause, but he quickly realized they were affected by Goblin Frenzy. Elijah was happy to see that their stunned state ended by the time he reached them. Once he and the others arrived, all of them retreated into the forest.

Currently, all of the warriors had the hunter job active. Although the warrior job gave them more benefits in direct combat, the plan they came up with didn’t require them to fight the goblins directly. Their plan relied on them using the hunter skills that increased the effects of their traps, and the stat boost that improved their ability to move through the forest.

Moving through the forest, the group easily dodge the traps they had set up earlier. Elijah didn’t have the abilities that the hunter job provided, so he had to carefully follow behind the warriors. After everyone made it passed the traps, they spread out and prepared to fire arrows at the goblins as they entered the forest.

You have been affected by Goblin Frenzy

Attack and Defense decreased by 20%

Before the goblins entered the forest Elijah took a glance at his battle notifications. He saw that the effects of Goblin Frenzy decreased. The decrease was caused by Elijah grouping up with the other warriors and several goblins being killed by the barrage of arrows.

A small amount of time passed before the goblins entered the forest with fierce expressions. They were looking for blood, but what they found were several traps that crippled, killed or tied them down. Next, they received several arrows from Elijah and the others.

Dozens of goblins died by the time they made it passed the traps. Most of the goblins that remained were wounded in some way, but all of them maintained their bloodthirst. Elijah was able to feel the negative emotions the goblins emitted, but he wasn’t afraid. Instead, the goblins bloodthirst made him more excited.

“Charge!” With a smile on his face, Elijah grabbed his sword and shield and charged at the goblins.

Your words boosted the morale of your people.

Attack and Defense increased by 10% for 60 seconds.

The smile on Elijah face grew when he saw the battle notification. Elijah’s excitement and running speed increased as he approached the goblins. Wanting to deal a devastating first attack, Elijah used his Supreme Power skill as he swung his sword at a goblins neck.

You have dealt 357 (375) fatal damage.

The goblins head went soaring into the air with a stunned expression on its face. A wave of pride flowed through Elijah when he saw what his attack accomplished. However, the pride quickly vanished when he felt a sharp pain in his right leg.

You have received 3 (31) damage.

You have dealt 24 (44) damage.

Alarmed by the pain Elijah backed away as he swung his sword at the goblin that attacked him and sent it stumbling back. Elijah wanted to step back to protect himself because he felt like he received a serious wound. However, when he looked at the battle notifications he immediately stopped backing away. Instead, he charged toward the goblins with his sword raised and a smile on his face.

Recklessly charging into the group goblins, Elijah swung his sword without any care for his own defenses. Elijah enjoyed the brief feeling of invincibility as he steamrolled his way through the goblins. Eventually, Elijah calmed down and broke free from the attacking goblins to see how everyone else was doing.

Looking around he was happy to see that nobody on his side was seriously injured or dead. A portion of the warriors were fighting the goblins in close combat while the others were firing arrows from the distance. As a chief his job was to look after his people, so Elijah searched the battlefield for who needed the most help. Elijah quickly found a player and a warrior that were fighting against a level thirty goblin.

Running over, Elijah focused his Supreme Will and his ruler’s suppression on the goblin. Elijah used Supreme Power skill as he swung his sword at the goblin. The goblin was able to block the attack, but the strength behind it pushed it back. The goblin was briefly stunned, which left it open to an attack.

The warrior and player took advantage of this opportunity and thrusted their weapons through the goblin’s chest. The goblin unleashed a roar full of pain and fury as it struggled to break free. When the goblin roared, Elijah felt his suppression on it break. It felt like a physical blow hit him in his chest forcing him to take a step back.

Your ruler suppression has been broken.

All abilities reduced by 20% for 10 minutes.

Elijah was stunned after he read the battle notification. He didn’t expect that there would be drawbacks to his ruler specialty, and he had to force himself to stop thinking about it. He was in the middle of a battle. Right now, he had to focus on killing goblins and he didn’t have the luxury to focus on anything else.

Focusing on the level thirty goblin Elijah saw that it failed to break free and died. The player and the warrior pulled their weapons from the dead goblin and left to find another enemy. Once again, Elijah began to search the battlefield, looking for someone in need. Only this time, he was a little bit more mindful about his lack of invincibility.
