Chapter 9: The gods and The corrupt.

Chapter 9: The gods and The corrupt.

Evan had been hours in the library, reading all the books he could get his hand into and learned a lot about the world he was living in now.

This world was made by 6 gods, who created everything in a primitive way and waited for the evolution of the races to kick in. When the races were fully evolved, they were able to learn about the gods and the power they could grant, and so they started praying to the gods and the gods blessed them all with the skills and the levels. That way, the races would be able to improve even more.

The gods that created this world are:

-Namika: Goddess of Darkness. She created every race that was close to the Darkness, like the dark elves, demons, and vampires. With her power over darkness, she created all the dark skills like dark magic and dark knight skills. She is usually despised by all the races for giving power to the Dark Lords.

-Zerax: God of Light. He created the humans and the angels. Also created all the holy skills and allowed the summoning of heroes. He is one of the most loved gods.

-Ezneas: Goddess of fortune. She created the dwarven race. Also created the merchant, gambler, the charmer and the royalty skills. Extremely loved by the people and it is said that she is the most beautiful goddess and the most playful.

-Cinmos: God of life, death. He created all the undead and the necromancer, soulmancer and technomancer skills. Not the most loved god due to the undead but carries the dead souls to the afterlife.

-Kalarae: Goddess of techniques. She created the dragon race and the beastkin, alongside all the physical skills like Samurai or Warrior and the skills like Bard. She is known as a warmongering goddess.

-Veto: God of knowledge. He created the magic skills and allowed that the races could learn more of mana. Also, he created the elves.

-Edia: Goddess of love, family, and loyalty. She made possible that the races could love and be loyal and allowed the birth of the demi races, like demi elves, who are only half elves and half another race.

After learning all that, Evan saw Noche floating in front of him, while he was clearly surprised. Mainly back in Dawn World, he didn't know who made each race and he was the one who kept track of all the lore of Dawn World, but now he knew. Still, it brought one clear question to his mind. Which race was Noche? He didn't recall any race like Noche, nor any data related to what Noche could be.

“Which quest have I completed?” Evan asked as he looked at Noche, still trying to decipher what race Noche was.

“The first! Good job!” Noche said with a cheerful voice, clearly happy that Evan was going forward with the quests.

“Thanks.” Evan said as he smiled widely, thinking that the tutorial wouldn’t be trouble.

“Now you can level up! This will be of great help to you! Remember that you gain more skill points, with the blessings you have been given by Namika.” Noche said, as he made sure to warn Evan to ensure he would start getting stronger faster.

“First, I will complete the second and the third if possible.” Evan said as he smiled widely, knowing that the best was to finish the quests already started.

“Also, you started to complete the second task, if I recall well. And the third one is almost finished!” Noche said as he floated around Evan, but that was giving Evan quite the headache.

“Well, time to search for more books. After all, I have to be prepared for the worst.” Evan said as he was going to search for books in the library. ‘The more data I hold, the better for me. Probably I can use it for my benefit.’ Evan thought to himself, as he looked in the library.

“Before you do that. I must ask one thing to add: The vampires were made by Cinmos, not by Namika. We don’t condone the act of using necromancy to create sentient beings. It’s a stain on the branch, and one we don’t like. We may create chaos, but we ain’t creating undead posh bastards. Leave that to Cinmos.” Noche said.

“Hm. An interesting situation then. Either way, I don’t go with using necromancy to make sentient beings. Unless one exception, but that one is unavoidable. Retainers are of great importance for me.” Evan replied while looking at Noche.

“Why would you want a retainer? We both know that with enough preparation, you can take over this country without it.” Noche said, trying to understand better the young dark lord.

“It’s simple, really. I hate despots and bureaucracy. Those who rule by force without the approval of those that they rule over are nothing more than petty tyrants. If you steal their future and their freedom, then you are nothing more than a petty tyrant who is as bad as a corrupt politician. So I try to create retainers to help me push things forward without becoming a despot, for not being able to deal with all the bureaucracy and listening to the people at the same time.” Evan said as he smiled at Noche.

“Well, you could have normal undead doing that. They are not that stupid if they can handle chores. ” Noche said as he considered Evan’s words.

“Not really. Unless I make superb ones like liches or fiends, because I am not going to make the mistake of doing archliches, you can be sure they can’t do much thinking for themselves. It’s easier to control an army that doesn’t ask about ethics and morality, especially when your usual strategy is softening their defenses with bombardment. Well, back on Earth, some managed to bs that with something called discipline… Which I consider menticide, or as more ignorant people call it: Brainwashing.” Evan explained calmly, while Noche floated around Evan.

“Well, why not archliches? They are powerful, far smarter than liches, and can command even more troops!” Noche said as he considered Evan’s words.

“More like, deal with a sentient and petty being who can try to corrupt your organization first and then make sure that they are king of the hill. Which means that the best benefit of using undead, alongside the lesser logistic strain, that is the absolute obedience, is gone. You want troops that don’t need to eat lots, since for that you use corpses and reanimate dead people to fight your wars, and then you want them to follow your orders.” Evan explained, as he considered what he had seen on Earth and read in the history books.

“So, how would you place that balance?” Noche asked, with a curious tone, due to where Evan was going.

“You must allow the undead to be loyal enough to do your bidding, and enough brain to understand the objectives and do them. That doesn’t mean they need to be sentient, they need to be akin to robots but more capable of understanding the orders and the different variables. It’s possible, but it’s a lot of trial and error. Luckily, for us, I already have the troop blueprints done due to the similarities of this world with the powers I have.” Evan replied, as he took a deep breath.

“Could you do a proper undead army if you had the materials, by I dunno… Four years in the future?” Noche asked once more, clearly worried about the situation in the country.

“It’s feasible, but I would have to work on it rather soon. You know, I can’t make the one I would want to, but a decent one is feasible. Of course, if we had enough corpses, I could probably make a weak one now… But yeah, probably they are free exp for the guard. I want to set a few things first before even considering gambling on that.” Evan said as he turned to look at the books. ‘Also, I need a way to make enough troops to murder the hero, and the elven king. If you think I am not committing regicide, you are fucking stupid.’ Evan thought to himself.

‘One day, you’ll have to do that army, Evan. Namika warned me since she was already aware of the corruption in this country. I just hope we do find a proper solution, even if it’s one where we are the villains.’ Noche thought to himself, worried about the future of Evan.

Evan started to search for books that would talk of the countries and the continents of this world. Probably wouldn't help him be sure if this world was the one of Dawn World, or just a very similar world, but who knew? At least more data would equal to have more information at his disposal, and if he could use it for his own ends, that was wonderful.

Meanwhile, Zerana had taken an odd job that was simple: Grab a bag filled with items of a merchant and deliver them outside of the city to an elf with long black hair. Zerana took it because the reward was extremely good, 20 copper coins and a mana stone. 100 copper coins are equal to a silver coin, and 100 silver coins are equal to one gold. A mana stone was worth 2 silver coins if you were good at haggling, and Zerana was good at it.

But when she arrived at the delivery point, she found a group of guards who readied to fight waiting, the tallest of them smiling at Zerana which made her feel like she was their prey. She prepared to fight against the guards, and run away, but decided to be cautious since they all were wearing steel armors that covered their bodies.

The first guard that Zerana saw was one carrying a sword and a shield, taller than the rest, and with a bulkier build. The second one was smaller than the average, but wielding a spear to make up for the range gap and make his attacks stronger. The third and fourth guards were of the same size, and almost were indistinguishable due to them using greatswords.

“What is happening?” Zerana asked, while her fur started standing up due to the state of alert she was in. ‘Let’s hope this is not a damned bug request…’ Zerana thought to herself, worried about her own wellbeing.

“We are waiting for a smuggler. It is a very cute beastgirl and carries a bag of stolen medicine. But we finally found you. You will be captured, and you will be a slave for theft of medicine.” One of the guards said as the group of guards smirked at Zerana.

“I got an odd job that told me to carry the bag here! Only that! I am no smuggler! It's clearly a misunderstanding!” Zerana started explaining herself as she started trying to move back into the city.

The guards were getting closer to Zerana, and she started to shiver. This was a trap made by corrupt guards and a smart slave trader, in which Zerana was the target, and she had fallen in the trap.

But then a tall dark elf who was wearing a cloak arrived and saw the situation. He bumped into one of the guards to stop them, which obviously enraged them and raised their suspicions quickly, and they all prepared their weapons to aim them at the dark elf.

“You! Why are you here!?” One of the guards with a greatsword asked as they looked at the dark elf.

“I am here because I am traveling to meet my father. After all, he is the only one who has the abilities I need.” The dark elf said, as he was glaring at the guard. A stern gaze could be seen in his eyes, enough intimidating to make the guard look nervous.

“Well, then you will have to follow us too! After all, you interrupted an arrest!” Another guard said, as they raised up their spear and aimed it at the dark elf.

The dark elf looked tired and disappointed in the situation, but for a small moment Zerana could see a spark in his eyes. A spark that made her instincts start acting up and make her get ready to run away, and she was enough scared already to want to stay there for much longer. Yet her body wouldn't move at all, due to her fear of the guards.

“An illegal arrest and a framing crime. Let's be honest: You want a little fun with beastgirls. I think you should be leaving. Now.” The dark elf said, in a cold tone, fed up with the entire abuse of power that was going on in this area.

“I will kill you!” The guard who was wielding a spear said as the entire group started trying to surround the dark elf.

“I will end you.” The dark elf calmly informed the corrupt guards, deciding that it was the most efficient way to proceed at this moment. Also, he would be ashamed if he left a girl like Zerana to fend them off by herself.

The dark elf took out the cloak and Zerana could see him well. He had long black hair, crimson eyes, a scar in his left cheek, a lacquered red and black prosthetic arm that has a sakura emblem in the shoulder and was wearing a black samurai armor with the emblem of a sakura flower. He had in his waist a pair of Japanese swords, one was a black lacquered katana and the other was a Wakizashi with a black handle and a silver blade.

The guards rushed at him, but he simply unsheathed his katana and cut the third and fourth guards arms and legs as if the armors they were wearing were made of cloth only and their bodies were made of butter.

“Damnit, Jeff and Derek are dead!” the guard wielding the spear said as he charged at the dark elf and tried to use the spear to hurt his enemy.

“Spears are always annoying, and I am not a fast man myself.” The dark elf said as he grabbed the spear from the left side and used his katana to start cutting the spear. The guard tried to pull away, but the elf’s strength was too much for him and could only drop the spear in terror, but not fast enough for the elf to use drop the katana and use the wakizashi to finish off the spear wielder.

One guard was smart enough to not attack him and run to the city, the one with the sword and shield, but that elf aimed his prosthetic arm at him and a mana bullet got out from his wrist and hit said guard head.

After that, the dark elf took a deep breath and looked even more tired than before, while Zerana was surprised at how easily her savior dispatched the guards.

“How did you do that!?” Zerana said, amazed by how her savior dispatched the guard with such a swift move without being extremely agile.

“They were in the path and were being rude to a girl. As my father said: It is common sense to help anyone who is in trouble. As to how: I just took advantage of their lack of training and discipline. It was easy to guess they were undisciplined, seeing how they stooped as low as to abuse their authority to acquire slaves.” The dark elf said as he started cleaning his swords, both the katana and the wakizashi which he pulled out of the body.

“Which is your name? I owe you a great deal. If it were not for your help, I would be turned into a slave.” Zerana asked as she smiled widely at the dark elf, using her cuteness to convince the dark elf to share their name.

“My name is Sumeragi.” The dark elf named Sumeragi replied, as he finished cleaning his sword.

Then Sumeragi left as he grabbed his cloak and put it on after he took out the dust it had. Zerana left the bag in case and went to ask for the reward. After all, she had done the job and she wouldn't risk losing the reward.

As Sumeragi went inside the city, Niko and Ricky walked towards him and made sure to walk alongside him. This made a few civilians look at Sumeragi with a strong gaze, due to how Ricky and Niko were known in the city as mercenaries that would protect anyone who they were paid to protect.

“Did she tell you two to get me? She’s too much of a careful woman, she knows I won’t make a mess.” Sumeragi said as he kept walking.

“She gave specific orders to guide you to sir Rubeus.” Niko simply said as he followed Sumeragi.

“You know how the boss lady is, Sumeragi. She knows you are too close to David, and that you both would gut each other. And she said this: It’s too soon for you to gut him. Remember, there’s a bigger fish to fry, and that we are getting the family back.” Ricky said as he smirked at Sumeragi, which made the dark elf to scowl.

“She’s too careful. I know to hold back. Unless he openly goes to seek me, that is.” Sumeragi retorted as he kept walking, only to be guided by Niko towards the slums of the city.

The slums had countless wooden shacks that acted as houses for the poor individuals of this country, with uneven streets that made even the best carriages to rattle a bit, and where everyone were wearing rags unless they were adventurers who were casually capturing a thief or people like Sumeragi and his group.

“And that’s why we are here, sir Sumeragi. Rubeus and Caroline said it clearly. You can’t gut him yet. We need to David alive.” Niko retorted back, while making sure they were in the correct direction. Until they found a massive pub that had an emblem of a small and seemingly cute angel, that was made of maple wood of the highest quality and stained-glass windows that made the entire interior look distorted and with a yellow glow.

“We need him to get smoked properly. Just like ol’ Smokey got.” Ricky said as he walked towards the door of the fancy pub, which was a sliding door made of stained-glass just as the windows were done.

Once the group got into the pub, they all saw the best pub of the slums. A fancy pub with a flooring made of black ceramic tiles with golden stripes, seats and tables made of mahogany wood, a massive counter made of mahogany wood, a massive piano on the northern end of the pub and a massive stage made of transparent glass which Sumeragi recognized as ballistic glass. Luckily, the pub was empty at this hour of the morning which made sure that reunions like this one would be less troubling.

Behind the counter, there was a young boy with a pair of red fox ears, a red fox tail, tanned skin, who looked in his 16’s. This boy was wearing a butler uniform, which was a black vest that had a red shirt below it, black pants, red and black gloves, a black necktie, and black shoes that had a glossy look.

Ricky and Niko walked towards the young boy, while Sumeragi sighed and followed them, which made the young boy to look scared for a second.

“Hey, Kojuki. Where’s Rubeus? I thought he’d be covering you, after… Well… The archbishop and you had a date” Ricky said while smirking, but the last part made Sumeragi cough loudly and put his prosthetic arm on top of the counter while clearly annoyed.

“The sir had to attend mass. He’s a preacher, after all, of the church of Zerax. Since he works with lady Caroline. What I wouldn’t give to get that close once more to the lovely archbishop.” The fox boy known as Kojuki replied, as he blushed brightly at the thought of getting close to Caroline soon.

“When he’ll be back? He’s oddly punctual with stuff like this.” Niko asked, while Sumeragi growled softly trying to hold back his desire to punch Kojuki, as the merc noticed Sumeragi’s reactions.

“He will be around soon. Maybe ten minutes.” Kojuki replied.

“Then better pray that the ticking bomb doesn’t go off before he arrives. It seems you’ll be the first to suffer the consequences.” Ricky said as he kept a wide smirk, as Kojuki shivered.

“Couldn’t you have the meeting somewhere away? I want to keep the seat prepared for miss Caroline.” Kojuki said, as he looked terrified of Sumeragi.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Then a girl walked near Sumeragi’s group, this woman seemed to be a cat beastkin due to her cat tail coming out of her pants, as she had white skin, red eyes, and was clearly smirking at Kojuki. This girl was wearing a purple hoodie, which covered her ears even if it was clear that she was a cat beastkin, blue shorts, white ankle socks, and blue trainers.

The cat beastkin swiftly moved to behind the counter and hugged Kojuki, while the poor boy was red as a beet, and she left out a cute ‘nya’ near Kojuki’s left ear. Kojuki couldn’t know where to look, but Sumeragi clearly was about to explode and hit the fox boy in the face.

“Don’t get so overprotective, Sumeragi.” The cat beastkin said as she smirked.

“You know very well why I am getting like this.” Sumeragi said with a scoff.

“That’s why Caroline hasn’t found a good husband, overprotecting brother.” The cat beastkin retorted.

“Nigredo. Where’s Rubedo? He should be here.” Sumeragi said as he looked coldly at the cat beastkin.

“Eh, you know how popular that guy is. He may be my brother, but he is too angelic… If you get my meaning.” Nigredo said as she chuckled.

“Wait a second, Nigredo and Rubedo!? Aren’t they-” Ricky said, as he was understanding the situation, only to be punched in the gut by Sumeragi’s prosthetic arm.

“No need to make a fuss, merc. You know who you are working for, but I will have to ask you some sort of silence about it. Your life is on the line with that.” Sumeragi said calmly, as Ricky just could nod and put his head on the counter.

“Fast reaction. Either way, better than me messing with his brain. Now, little Kojuki here had a hot date with your dear sister. Maybe it is a good signal for a good husband for her?” Nigredo said as she giggled.

“Stop with that, Nigredo.” A calm and silky voice said from the entrance of the pub.

In the entrance of the pub, there was a man with white skin, red eyes, black rectangular glasses, shoulder-length red hair, who had a lean body but clearly looked as if the man had trained for at least twenty years. He was wearing a set of black priest robes that consisted of a black vestment with golden lines across the vestment that led to the area where the heart was, which had an emblem of a golden sword, and black shoes.

“Rubedo! You are back!” Nigredo said as she smiled widely.

“Well, I had to deal with a rather nasty man. Who might come here to get back at me for slapping his face for his abusive behavior towards a female of the congregation.” Rubedo said coldly.

“Didn’t Caroline tell you to not cause a mess?” Nigredo asked as she sighed.

“She also told me to handle those that would hurt the congregation. I considered which orders were more important to follow, and made sure to find a way to follow both. I guided the abusive man to a pub in which no one would believe I am in, and once he arrives… We shall silence him.” Rubedo replied as he walked towards Sumeragi.

“You messed up one thing.” Sumeragi said, while tilting his head to point at Kojuki.

“He’s a nice boy. And I can’t handle everything, so I delegated that to Nigredo. Of course, I feel the same as you feel, sir Sumeragi. But can’t be always blocking that path, it’d be detrimental for lady Caroline.” Rubedo said, as he looked at Sumeragi.

“Okay, I will trust your belief. But seems like your guest is coming.” Sumeragi said, as he heard steps coming into the pub.

“I fear you are right, sir. Don’t worry, I will be fast.” Rubedo said, as a tall and bald man with brown eyes and wearing a blue T-shirt, white pants, and brown boots entered inside with a clear mark of being slapped and the lack of a tooth as his mouth was bleeding.

“You damn preacher! That bitch of my wife must be one of your thousand conquests, you lustful preacher!” The man said as he looked angrily at Rubedo.

“You confuse me with yourself, sir. I would never lay with a member of the congregation. I am not like the usual preacher of the church, who does go too far with the love share edict of the church. Not only that, but I just care about their wellbeing and their spirituality. So sir, I shall ask of you one thing. Let’s settle our differences here and now, since your acts towards your wife were abusive, like forcing her to kiss you as you grabbed her by the mouth. I can’t stand scum like you, and you can’t stand me. So let’s finish this up as two grown men, and just punch each other to our heart’s content.” Rubedo said as he walked towards the man.

As Rubedo walked towards the man, said man tried to punch Rubedo only to see his fist going just besides Rubedo’s face without even grazing it as Rubedo released a golden aura from his fingertips and moved his hand as if he was guiding the attack. The man tried once more to punch Rubedo, but he failed once more, as Rubedo delivered a calf kick on the man’s left leg and a loud crunch noise could be heard.

“Argh! My leg is broken!” The man exclaimed as he fell to the ground, and held his left leg, which was clearly broken by the kick made by Rubedo.

“Good. That way, your death will be quick.” Rubedo said as he coldly placed his left foot on the man’s face and finished the fight with a simple stomp.

“What we will say about his death? We can’t paint you as a killer, that’d be annoying for Caroline!” Nigredo said as she looked worriedly at the corpse.

“It’s not that hard. I just need to clean the vestments, and you only need to manipulate a grave digger to dig a grave for the corpse. Or just use the incinerator. I handled the issue, so it’s only natural that you handle the cleanup process. Also, it’s partially your fault. This man acted up because you got her wife to go on one of the parties of the church, and this man took it as I had guided her there. So fix your own mess, Nigredo.” Rubedo said as he took a deep breath.

“Okay, okay. Got it. Kojuki, can you help me with the guy?” Nigredo said, as she looked dejected.

“O-Okay, I would love to help a fair lady like you!” Kojuki said as he started carrying the corpse.

“Well, let’s talk business, no?” Sumeragi said as he glared at Rubedo.

“Of course, sir.” Rubedo said.

And so the group started having a meeting in that pub, as a red mark was left on the ground of the pub that was all what would remain of the man who attacked Rubedo. The wife would never ask about the husband, and it was proven soon enough that the man was clearly abusive to the wife. No one knew who put the proof of it to the guard, but there were rumors of a hooded girl leaving a stack of papers on a guard’s office with a letter that said ‘Luckily, you are not like him’.

Many people spoke about the fact that maybe said individual was a fling of the guard and the proof was a warning for the guard about how things could end up if he ever became that abusive.
