Chapter 22: The First Alliance For The Throne.

Chapter 22: The First Alliance For The Throne.

Evan had to find Alex, a candidate for the position of captain of the guard and make a deal with him in order to get him as a political ally for his plan, so he went to the headquarters of the guard. The headquarters were in a giant building of 2 floors made of stone in a plaza where there was a big statue of David in honor of his deeds, which seemed to be more of duels against the kings of the other countries and against wandering knights. In the same plaza, there were potion shops where people could buy potions, blacksmith shops that sold many weapons and the adventurer guild that was a 3-floor building made of stone and iron that had a small banner with a pair of swords crossed, Evan didn't take a hard look around the area since he was seeking the guard and couldn't waste time at all.

The guard is only meant to protect all the country unless the castle and make sure that the laws were applied to the state. For the castle, there was the royal guard who only took the best of the best, and they were level 45 minimum to a maximum of level 55.

The captain of the guard was as strong as the royal guard and held all the power in the guard. No one could disobey him unless it is the king, the king's advisors and the royal guard, and so having the captain as an ally was a great step towards kingship.

Evan did not know that, but guessed that controlling him would mean a lot of advantage, as having friends up in the hierarchy always was a good idea. Yet, also hoped that Alex would be enough decent to somehow make amends for what probably Grandine (Caroline) did with Lillian. Evan knew his daughter, and knew that she would try to help girls with their self-esteem issues with a simple method: Make them look good and have them hang out with her, making many good relationships, but also enjoying the typical parties she had.

Evan had to wait around 20 minutes to enter the headquarters and when he entered he found a tall man with tanned skin, blue eyes, chestnut hair who was wearing a brown armor and had an iron sword hanging in his waist. Evan did not waste time and asked that man one simple thing, mostly because he would look too suspicious if he took too much time to ask the guard.

“Hello sir, where I can find Alex?” Evan asked as he looked at the man with a wide smile.

“That would be me, young boy. What do you want?” The guard, who was Alex, said as he looked at Evan. ‘Why would a boy come here and ask for me? I know that I am popular, but not to the point of getting people just coming here to bother me.’ Alex thought to himself.

“I want to talk to you.” Evan said as he kept his smile.

“There has been trouble with your family? I can get a more suitable guard to handle this, I have a lot of work to handle.” Alex said as he looked at Evan with a worried face.

“I believe that we shouldn't talk here. It could attract unwanted attention.” Evan said as he looked around the area.

Just after Evan had said that, a hooded man with black leather armor and wielding a dagger jumped at Alex, who couldn't defend himself due to the sudden attack. Evan did analyze in less than a second the attack pattern, then simply traced where the assassin's head would be to deliver the blow, and pointed his finger at the head of the assassin with his demon-like smile, making his mana flow into the finger and concentrating it to form a fire bullet.

“Fire bullet.” Evan chanted, only to increase the piercing power of the spell.

Evan shot a fire bullet at the head of the assassin and killed him, leaving a clear hole in the middle of the head and exactly between both eyebrows. After a pair of seconds, the assassin’s soul popped out of the corpse and Evan ate it. Alex couldn't even understand what was going on, but Evan had saved his life, and so decided to accept what he was asking. Also, he planned on interrogating and pressuring the young boy since he had to be careful.

“You will have to explain all what is going on. Come with me!” Alex said with a stern tone, as he started walking towards a room.

“Understood!” Evan exclaimed with the same smile. ‘Good, got him! Now to convince him!’ Evan thought to himself.

Evan followed Alex and they both went into a room where there was nothing, which raised Evan's alarms quickly but not quick enough. While Evan was readjusting himself to counter a surprise attack, Alex locked the door and unsheathed his sword and aimed it at Evan's chest. This was answered in kind by Evan, who turned his left hand into a formless slime connected to a slime blade, which was aiming at Alex's throat while Evan smiled like a demon once again.

“If I were you, I would never stab me. After all, I am your way to become the captain of the guard. Also, I have your throat. So if you stab me, I will kill you... Something I will certainly despise doing, but logical. Both of us are in quite a bind, and if you don't trust me... We both will be in problems soon.” Evan said as he shrugged.

“What do you mean?” Alex asked calmly. ‘What is this one meaning. Is he trying to help me?’ Alex thought to himself.

“If I were Josh, I would send several assassins after your neck. And if I was one of the assassin's paid by him, I would have killed you already. And wouldn't have approached you in such an open manner. But he underestimates you, or so it seems, so he sent only one to cut down on costs.” Evan explained calmly, while keeping his sight on Alex.

“Did you have to kill him?” Alex asked once more, with a worried look on his face.

“There was no other option, and it was the most efficient. Also, a good way to get your attention. Assassins like him usually have armors that protect against curses, or so they did back in Dawn World. And if I turned my arms into slime to stop him... All the guard would try to kill me. And there's the chance of him having a poisoned tooth or the like.” Evan replied, as he smirked. ‘And I miss being able to use Dark Chain… Maaaaybe I can do some trickery on some limitations? Okay, noting that down. Trying methods to bypass the limitations.’ Evan thought to himself.

“I see. But why do you think that I want to be the captain of the guard?” Alex asked with a raised eyebrow. ‘No, can’t trust him. He appears to be young, but also is more experienced than myself. He could be a godslayer in hiding, trying to use me for his own nefarious reasons.’ Alex thought to himself.

“Because I know what you desire? You desire a chance to be with that woman, after all. Also, who in their sane mind wouldn’t want that position? It probably pays rather well.” Evan replied while smirking.

Alex started sweating, and his sword now aimed at Evan's neck. Evan answered in kind, aiming his other hand towards Alex's chest, as a fire bullet could pierce Alex's armor.

“Talk. Now.” Alex ordered to Evan. ‘Does he know about Lillian? This bastard! I want to kill him right away for trying to blackmail me with that!’ Alex thought to himself.

“If you kill me, Lillian will hate you. After all, you will be sending her to her death!” Evan said as he chuckled. ‘Ah, this guy will be easy to crack. He’s the emotional sort, and extremely kind too. And probably Lillian will be his type. Yep, not telling Zerana and the others. Seeing how close the kids are with Lillian, they might try to drive him away.’ Evan thought to himself, pondering the entire situation.

“What did you do to her?” Alex asked, as he looked certainly angry.

“Nothing. But she will be killed by the ones that go after you at this rate. So we have to work together. Will you be my ally for my conquest of Elstivia? You will be capable to try to gain Lillian's love if you are the captain of the guard.” Evan replied.

“How do you know that I-” Alex was about to ask, before being interrupted by Evan coughing loudly.

“Shush! Do not say it. I prefer being safe than sorry.” Evan said.

“What can you do to help me?” Alex asked, while looking at Evan.

“Kill Josh, kill the captain of the guard, and ensure that you are the next captain. Mainly, got the perfect timing for this now. One is about to retire, and the other is already celebrating his victory.” Evan replied, as he smiled.

“But?” Alex asked once again. ‘I do agree that Josh can be troubling to say the least. But that doesn’t mean I can trust this guy either.’ Alex thought to himself.

“You will have to aid me when I need you. If you betray me, I will kill you. But you won't, will you? If you kill me, Lillian will die sooner or later.” Evan replied as he chuckled.

“Why is that?” Alex asked again, his barrage of questions was starting to be bothersome for Evan, but he decided to ignore it for now.

“She helped without wanting the Dark Lord. The pope will kill her for that.” Evan replied once again.

“She is that kind of woman. So innocent that would aid the Dark Lord.” Alex said as he groaned.

“I will tell you who is the Dark Lord someday. When it is needed.” Evan said as he smiled.

“You don't trust me.” Alex said as he frowned.

“If I did not trust you, I'd kill you on the spot where you are standing right now, lad. I trust you, but if I want that all of this plan works... Well. I need to have my secrets.” Evan said with his smile.

“I see now that you are not an innocent kid.” Alex said, as he sheathed his sword. ‘He’s right. And while I don’t trust him… I’ll have to listen to him.’ Alex thought to himself.

“What gave me away? My bloodlust, my planning, or that I am not afraid of you?” Evan said sarcastically.

“All of that together gave it away. Also, your reaction to me putting a sword to your throat, any children would cry already.” Alex said, not noticing the sarcasm that Evan had used.

“Ahhh, never mind. My sarcasm was not caught. And that's ironically fun, since it gives away a bit of how you are!” Evan said as he shrugged.

“What will you ask me to do?” Alex asked, still slightly cautious about Evan’s plan.

“Simple. During four years, I want you to be a big wall stopping David from his plans of making a slave country out of Elstivia. Then you will join a rebellion that I will prepare during those 4 years, in which we kill David, his advisors and anyone who will try to stop me from becoming king.” Evan replied calmly.

“And I win this position of captain and the chance to be with Lillian?” Alex asked calmly.

“Not only that. Any trouble you have and does not affect the rest of my planned comrades will be solved by me, you know... That way you can send guards where they can be a game changer. Also, when I am the new king I will improve Elstivia financial situation, abolish the slavery and improve all of Elstivia. Guards included.” Evan answered to Alex’s question.

“How do you plan to do it?” Alex asked, which was a question that Evan liked a lot.

Evan chuckled and nodded, while thinking carefully about how to improve Elstivia. He knew that probably Elstivia's connections would be decent at best, but nowhere near what Earth had. With that alone, he remembered what happened in the Wild West era and knew exactly what to do.

“Elstivia is a country without any direct contact between the villages and the capital. That makes logistics a lot more... Inefficient. Creating a railway for trains to bring people and food to the capital, and interconnecting every single city and town, will make that the bandits lose any chance to steal anything, plus a good group of people protecting it will make sure that almost nothing can stop the trains. Alongside that, if we put some innovative weapons on the trains themselves... Like turrets, machines that work like flintlock guns but shoot repeatedly and could be manned by people, undead, golems, or literally automatic. I would prefer if people used them, you know, more jobs and less chance to lose money.” Evan started explaining to Alex.

“That would improve everything. Logistics are hard to handle with the things as they are now.” Alex said, as he pondered over Evan’s plan.

After hearing Alex's approval, Evan decided to think in working hard on agriculture and cattle raising. He was sure that sugar would be a profitable business, and having a good food production would make the country a lot more stable than it was right now. So he decided to apply his knowledge of the sugar cane colonies, and combine it with using the beets instead of sugar canes for better production.

“We will produce sugar, potatoes, vegetables and maintain a high-quality meal for everybody with good cattle raising. I know how to produce sugar in a land where you cannot grow sugar cane. But I will need some beets. Every nation requires food, and the better the quality of the food is... The better the people will be. But we will have to reforest some areas, and make ecological progress. Better taking care of the world than just polluting it.” Evan kept explaining calmly. ‘Why hasn’t Azmosdei pulled a British move, one of our greatest ones, and privateered the pirates?’ Evan thought, as he considered what was going on.

“Do you have any kind of wisdom given by the gods?” Alex asked as he looked at Evan with a curious look.

“No. Just a bit of wisdom from my past life. But the best comes now. I will create gunpowder and explosives that do not need mana to be used. Also, we can manage to create a maritime system for trading. Not too dangerous on their own, since I dislike the idea of innocents getting hurt and that I desire to not pollute Terra like an idiot.” Evan replied as he scowled at Alex’s words.

Alex couldn't understand how much Evan knew, but at that moment he knew that making an enemy of Evan would kill this country itself. In fact, Evan was the ray of hope this country was seeking, and Alex knew that he had to protect that ray of hope. And so he decided to accept Evan's plan because it could give everyone a chance to have a good life, and vowed that he would protect that hope as best as he could.

“I accept the deal. Evan, from now on, I will be your ally.” Alex said with a smile on his face.

“Good thing! You passed! I also wanted to see if you were a good guy too.” Evan said as he smirked.

“I see. Seeing me as a friend means a lot to you.” Alex said as he looked at Evan in the eye.

“I never trust in people who only want personal gain. And for my plan and your job, I need to trust you. I know you may not like some of my actions, but I will do what I must to save Elstivia. Otherwise, we will have a big problem.” Evan said as he closed his eye.

“Why do you not trust those who want personal gain?” Alex asked, as he wanted to understand better the person that was going to help him.

“They are a liability. If they are going to do a small job, I can trust them. But in a big job? Never leave a job to someone who can betray you for a coin. In fact, there are two kinds of people that I do not trust for big jobs. Those who do it for the fun and those who can be bought. Come on, get a loyal minion that won't be swayed by gold or by their own deranged ideas to do the big jobs. It's easier than losing all due to being stupid.” Evan said as he scoffed.

“Seems that I could gain a lot of wisdom from this.” Alex calmly said.

“Indeed. Those who do it for fun may give a sporting chance to the enemy. And so, killing all advantage that I have over the enemy. Those who can be bought are useful when you want a clean job that cannot tie you down... But at the first moment that you give them a big position... They will try to get your position.” Evan explained as he looked at Alex.

“Seems that you know a lot of things. I would like to see you planning an attack.” Alex said as he scratched his chin.

“You are seeing it now. I am telling you on whom you have to trust and who you don't have to trust. I am planning to make sure that you live. After all, you are useless to me if you die now.” Evan said as he kept scowling. ‘If you die, only Namika knows how long it would take me to get a replacement!’ Evan thought to himself.

“Well, at least I can flirt with Lillian when I get the position. She deserves a good man.” Alex said as he blushed, imagining having a date with Lillia.

“If you end up dating her... Protect her. She is too loyal to the church and too innocent. I owe her my life. Also, Caroline probably is seeking a good boyfriend for her. So I would tell you to pick up the pace.” Evan said as he smirked at Alex.

Alex looked at Evan with a wide surprise, but decided to calm down and keep working with him. It didn't matter that Evan was the Dark Lord, Alex knew that Elstivia was going to a path of self-destruction and that Evan was their only choice. Evan did notice Alex's reaction, and smiled like a demon.

“I did a deal with the Dark Lord... Who I should kill at first sight. But that would be a waste.” Alex said as he simply sighed and tried to accept it.

“Heh. I like your style. You are not an airhead like the hero. But it is quite a good irony. And now all comes down to have my fun with Josh. And I will have my fun. See you soon, my ally.” Evan said as he smiled.

Evan left the room with a smile in his face, he had a new ally and someone who he could trust. And also someone who could stop Grandine from trying to get a boyfriend for Lillian, which would make him have a handful of heart attacks for sure.

As Azmosdei was talking with Naliala, he was keeping an eye on the entire area. He was surrounded by guards for sure, so trying to kill Naliala for her insolence or even consider attacking her was a bad idea, but it seemed like Naliala wouldn’t kill him.

“So tell me all the Epitaph. All of it. That last prophecy, from the first line to the last one. I will try to decipher it properly, so you understand it well. Seeing how you messed up once, you might mess up twice.” Azmosdei said as he looked at Naliala, his eyes shining with mana.

“And if I don’t?” Naliala asked, with a nervous face.

“Well, then forget about me assisting you. Oracle Proshittua.” Azmosdei said as he looked at the supposed prophet.

This made the woman look surprised, as she looked nervously around the room in a panic attack, while Azmosdei chuckled while looking at the supposed prophet. The old merchant had used Full Analysis on the supposed prophet, alongside Prognosis, as it had been his basis for all of his deals even in Dawn World.

“Do you know why I am a godslayer, even if my skills are subpar compared to other mages? Because of my items. Do you even have a basic idea of how did I acquire the items? By being a good merchant. And a good merchant always knows who they are talking with, no matter how secret the identity of the client seems to be. You are trying to buy me, but you don’t even get around, Naliala. Seems like you are not going to get me as an ally. Because I hate slavers, and you are assisting them.” Azmosdei said as he got up, and got ready to run from the room.

Before Azmosdei could leave the room, he felt a splitting headache and the surrounding area changed… No, it was better to say that he was displaced instantly to a glade in the middle of anywhere. Azmosdei didn’t know where he was, after all he had been displaced forcefully, and he missed his old accessory that prevented that kind of teleports.

‘It’s been ages since someone ever tried a forceful displacement. Hell, last time was back in Dawn World. I got sloppy, they haven’t stayed out of the radar for so long without a surprise. I miss Pik, she would know where the hell we would be if she was with me. Damnit.’ Azmosdei thought, as he tried to concentrate to cast the spell known as City Teleport to teleport back to any of the villages he had visited. He had bookmarked the village of the prophets, so after being in the safe area… He had many options to do.

But before Azmosdei could finish preparing for another teleportation, he heard a rumble as a massive square shaped robot made of rusted steel with four spider-like legs that had cannons attached to the knee area of each leg, and a pair of arms that were simple chains attached to the square torso. Each chain held a massive Morningstar, with bloodied spikes that signified that Azmosdei wasn’t the first to die to it.

“Shit. This crap was around in Dawn World, but it should be down and depowered. Have the dwarven bastards managed to power this one up? I was too confident. With golems, Dispersal of Rock should be enough to instantly kill them. With undead, Rock Fall. But against mechas? I need Pik, or this will take ages.” Azmosdei said as he started walking back, trying to avoid getting into the range of the mecha.

“Well, never thought I’d kill a godslayer with this beauty! Even if it’s an old geezer!” An excited voice came out of the mecha as the cannons aimed at Azmosdei.

“I may be old. But if you think that crappie can kill me, you better get ready to see the flatline of your survival pod.” Azmosdei said, as he frowned at the mecha. ‘It’s an old model, rusted, and probably with a 5% of battery. Should be doable, even if the bastard driving it carried a few friends. Otherwise, instead of getting close, he would have shot on sight.’ Azmosdei thought as he got ready to fight.

“Oh, no. I know that this mecha won’t kill you. Under normal circumstances, you’d easily bind it and then smash the torso until all of its internal components spill out. Thing is, I brought a few friends.” The driver said as he moved towards Azmosdei.

Azmosdei simply started moving away from the mecha, not knowing where he was, as he sought a safe place to bind the mecha and proceed to show how even an old man would scrap that mecha. But as soon as he got away from the mecha, which moved slowly, Azmosdei felt a projectile grazing his left cheek. An arrow had passed near his cheek, and that meant one thing: An archer was around, and the old sage was inside the range of said archer.

‘Shit, an ambush. In the middle of nowhere? Yeah, I know where the hell I am. Rivialt. Great, the king will use me as a reason to push forward the slavery. Never trust a king, Evan said, and what do I do? I trust one, and then he starts trying to plot against me! Agh, this is why Evan said that he could see us becoming lapdogs of corrupt kings… I need to locate the archer, and focus on this fight. Kill the archer, probably has a comfy place to snipe me, use the place to bind the mecha, and then it’s lights out for the mecha driver.’ Azmosdei thought as he started running with his old body, his joints sending sharp signals of pain all across his body, while trying to locate the archer.

As Azmosdei ran away, several arrows fell around him, but the arrows that struck him simply got stopped by his clothes and fell to the ground. At least, the equipment he usually used had enough defense to handle most of the mass-produced arrows made in Terra.

So Azmosdei kept running and arrived to a cave, with two floors, in which there was an elf on the second floor. This elf covered himself fully in a sort of black leather armor and a leather mask that had welding googles attached to the mask itself. The only parts of the archer’s body that wasn’t covered by the mask were the ears, as they stood proudly and pointy.

‘Huh? At least he covers all of his body, shame it is just a common armor. Had it been rare, I would have to think more about how to kill him.’ Azmosdei thought as he created a stone projectile of the size of the elf’s head, and shot it to the elf’s head at the speed of a bullet.

The elf received a clean kill, he had the projectile going through his head before he could even react, and so the death was instantaneous. Not a sound, not even a small scream, just a loud thud and a crashing sound due to the rock striking a stone wall.

Azmosdei simply kept running as the mecha went after the old sage, only to stop before arriving to the cave and moving away from the cave.

“Okay, did my job. The old man is in the cave. Now the Aren will kill him. Shouldn’t take long. I would prefer that I got to kill him. But going inside the cave would be my death.” The driver of the mecha said, as he seemed angry at the prospect of losing the chance to kill a godslayer.

As the mecha left, Azmosdei walked inside the cave. It was a damp cave, with water puddles here and there, with small holes all across the cave. It clearly was an old goblin nest, but clearly abandoned or cleaned, as the elf could just stay in the second floor without any trouble of being ambushed.

‘Great, the mecha left. I can just walk inside, and then fully prepare for the driver to come with a party to smoke me out. I don’t think that anyone would wait here for me to rush inside, and risk ending up without part of the payment.’ Azmosdei thought as he moved through the different rooms of the cave, until he reached the second floor of the cave: Where he was greeted by a room with a wooden door that was closed.

The closed door did raise Azmosdei’s alarms, and he carefully tried to walk past it, only to hear a soft click. He then noticed a loud noise just behind the door, and a huge explosion. While being careful to not find himself being struck by someone opening the door quickly, he didn’t notice the tripwire that was on the ground ready to trigger an explosive behind the door.

The explosion sent the old sage flying to the first floor, he heard a series of loud steps while his ears were ringing due to the explosion.

A tall man, with rosy skin, golden dragon-like eyes, long white hair, with a scar across his left eye, looking as if he was in his twenties. This man was wearing a thick dark brown leather armor, with a thick chainmail added on top of the torso, legs, and pauldrons. The man’s hands were covered by iron gauntlets with the interior made of leather, and he was wearing boots that had iron plates covering the entirety of the boot, as he was wielding an arming sword made of a gunmetal material similar to Titanium but released a thick mana as it had been highly enchanted.

“Well, Woolman. I apologize for working on this, but we must try with a few godslayers first before attempting to kill the one who will be the dark lord.” The man said, as he walked closer to Azmosdei, with a cold glare.

“Well, fuck you. Earth Spell Variation: Earth Spikes.” Azmosdei said as he channeled mana through his staff to attack with spikes made of rock, only to see them unable to pierce the man.

“This is why the Arens use this sort of armor. Hard to cut, hard to pierce. And it doesn’t need extremely rare materials. So fewer enchantments for resistance, even if we do use a few just in case, more for repair and magical resistances. It’s a shame you can’t use fire spells, I would have loved to see how the armor does against that. But well, probably I would have prepared better then.” The man said as he looked at Azmosdei.

“So, now what? Do you kill me after catching me by surprise? If so, might as well consider one thing: I can teleport.” Azmosdei said as he disappeared, as he had channeled mana once more, but this time to teleport away from the man.

“A shame that Naliala prepared this for you, Woolman. You can’t teleport further than 1 kilometer. I can track you.” The man said, as he started moving out of the cave, to track Azmosdei.

Azmosdei noticed the situation too late, and appeared in the midst of a forest without knowledge of where he was. He just felt like a tennis ball that had struck a wall and then rebounded away, and with the joints in pain and the head still ringing due to the explosion… It sure didn’t look good for Azmosdei, who decided to keep moving so the mecha nor the Aren would follow him easily.
