Chapter 7: The Master in Planning

Chapter 7: The Master in Planning

Kanbe got his sword ready to strike, aiming at Evan's chest with his sword, which started glowing, but Evan guessed what Kanbe would do in no time. After all, the skills of this world were extremely similar to the ones of Dawn World, and Evan remembered all the skills of the game. After all, to be a great PVP player you had to know all the ranges of the skills that the enemy, and that meant that Evan knew all the ranges of the skills from minor to master. Alongside the cooldown timing, and the positioning required to dodge any single one of them due to a certain skill tree he used to have that required him to dodge perfectly.

Kanbe charged towards Evan, with his sword glowing while he went for a downward slash aimed to slash his enemy's torso, but Evan jumped back and prepared to cast a spell which was basically raising his left hand to aim at Kanbe, and send the mana to his hand in order to cast the spell.

“Lethargy!” Evan said as his mana circulated across his body at a quick speed, as if it had become one with his blood. ‘Let’s start going soft, slow him down a bit and see if he has anti-curse equipment. If he does, then I have to use the time it takes between use and use to curse him and wipe him out quickly. Can’t go on attrition, he can fight close combat without mana while I can’t fight without mana.’ Evan thought as he considered the entire situation.

Evan aimed at Kanbe with his left hand and a small wave made of darkness came out of it, hitting Kanbe with a massive speed that Kanbe couldn't perceive. Kanbe felt sluggish, making him become slower, and failed the attack which didn't even graze Evan, who dodged by sidestepping Kanbe. Evan smiled, took advantage of that slow movement like he had done in Dawn World so many times, and prepared to cast a full spell.

Evan knew that depending on the Intelligence of the user, the enchantments of the equipment and some passives, the user could omit the chants of the spells or use them to increase the damage. Evan right now with his high intelligence was able to choose between the two options for the minor spells, only minor spells, but that was what he had right now, and he was going to make Kanbe pay for his mistake.

"Fire converge in my hand and strike down my foes! FIREBALL!" Evan said as his mana started flowing into his left hand.

A ball of fire went out of Evan's hand and went directly to Kanbe's face, but a ball of water hit the fireball, which caused that a lot of steam appeared from the reaction of the water and the high temperature of the fire. Yet this didn't stop the fireball, only weakened it a lot which made it hit Kanbe and properly explode but made sure that the explosion didn't break the armor and hurt Kanbe's face. This said, Kanbe still received a lot of damage from the fireball, but he only lost a 26% of his HP which could be seen as his armor was red-hot and Kanbe felt pain across his entire body.

Saida cast without any chant a lot of ice spears, which were releasing a cold aura around themselves and looked more like stalactites than proper spears. But Saida used her mana to throw them to Evan, who managed to dodge them all while looking like he was dancing a waltz. Yet, Evan felt like he was fighting against fools... Which was what he expected from the hero, but not from his granddaughter. He hoped that she was enough capable to fight at least at the level of Legadonia, and this made him feel disappointed even if it was a relief.

'Are they fools or what!? At least feign a skill to force me to move to a bad position! This is getting asinine!' Evan thought as he considered whether to use a chant to finish the combat. “Fire concentrate and in a bolt of fire, destroy my foes! FIREBOLT!” Evan said as his mana circulated quickly towards his right hand, as a rapid stream of mana concentrated on his right palm.

Evan aimed with his right hand at Saida, from which a bolt of fire that released quite the scorching aura came out and went to strike her, only to be countered by another spell coming from Saida.

“Ice, freeze the enemy's attack and protect me! Ice Wall!” Saida said, as she was sweating due to both the stress of the fight, and the mental fatigue that was being built due to the casting of spells.

Saida created instantly a 2-meter ice wall, that released a wave of cold air that made Kanbe shiver, in front of Saida and fully ready to intercept the firebolt. This impressed Evan, due to the quick reaction, but it wasn’t enough to stop his attack and he was sure of it. But now, he was forced to work with a time limit: A spell like that would catch too many curious eyes, due to the sudden temperature change, the steam that would come out due to the impact, and the size of the wall.

After a few seconds it received the firebolt, which exploded when it contacted the wall, due to the reaction between the heat and the ice which caused a massive mist explosion that blinded both sides. Or so Saida thought, for Evan this was a child's game since he was used to using smokescreens to attack other players and knew exactly how they would go to attack him. But there were pressing matters for Evan, he had to finish this quickly since a child body is not meant to cast so many spells at once since their brains are not ready for casting so many spells. And while he was used to pain, it was better to not risk it with a wounded body as his. It was a no-hit life for him right now, and if he was hit once… That’d be it.

Kanbe was preparing himself for a hard fight and had cast without chanting Holy Heal, Holy Blade, and Holy Aura to protect himself and raise his damage, even if he was starting having doubts due to how skilled Evan proved to be, but he did not expect what Evan was doing.

Evan's plan was simple: Win time or kill them. Being defeated was not an option, and he knew that, since it’d be death for him and for Legias. To not count the fact that the children would be sad and his position in the orphanage would be in danger due to that failure, and that was something he wouldn’t allow.

So following that chain of thoughts, this attack was only a cover-up attack to kill Legias. Then, it’d be easy to cover it up as revenge for Legadonia's death and at the same time it would allow Saida to be queen without having to marry a noble, surely.

Evan did not know a lot of the traditions and culture of elves, but he did know a thing of society. In the monarchy, there was a universal rule: a queen without a king and with a candidate for being a king with royal blood is a no-no. One faux pas that the father of Legias would never do, but one whose solution would lock the freedom that Saida had.

So Evan guessed that Saida decided to kill Legias before he could be a suitable candidate for the throne. Then this fight made all the situation hard to cover up for Saida and this smokescreen would be seen by the guards sooner or later. Probably sooner, so Evan decided to try to make Saida back off.

Evan didn't know if they had support incoming, and that was a big issue for him, since being caught would be probably lethal for his plans. It was not the time nor the place to eliminate the hero and kidnap Saida to fix whatever was going on with her head. Even if the hero was useless, the country would not give up the source of hope that the hero could be, and the fight was already getting too flashy to not attract attention so reinforcements would be coming quicker than he could expect.

The fact that Evan wasn’t able to close the situation safely did anger him a little, but he decided to accept what he could win right now and force things up to a close with a bit of bravado and using facts that only he could use against Saida.

“Can we wrap this up? I don't know... Maybe you surrender and retreat? I know everything. And your mother, Saida, would be dissatisfied with your stupid plan. Hell, I feel like when I was raiding low level people to build up an army! And let me tell you something, I hated that boring grind. I hope you aren’t a little tart too, or if so, do as Grandine and make sure to keep it out of ears reach.” Evan said while smirking, knowing this would anger Saida by what little he had seen of her, as Kanbe tried to locate Evan with worry in his eyes.

This did anger the elven princess to a point where she got defensive, her posture exuded anger and doubts, and her tone was harsh. Kanbe knew that Saida was angry, but he couldn’t keep fighting. If he did, he probably would have to explain himself to king David, and that would be a mess for those that saw the hero as a knight of justice.

“What do you know of my mother, you damnable bastard!?” Saida demanded to know, as her ire was hard to keep down.

“Legadonia. That's her true name.” Evan said as he prepared to attack once more.

Saida seemed completely shaken, and used her ears to locate Evan, which felt like looking for a needle in a haystack. But once she found, she started casting magic to strike Evan and sweep him to a tree or send him rolling to the wall of the city. Mostly, that would be enough for her to keep the man she was half-sure that was her grandfather out of the entire mess.

“Water, converge and destroy! Water Tidal Wave!” Saida said as she sent a massive wave of mana to connect all the water made due to the melting of ice to create the tidal wave she would use to attack, but with that also dragged all the steam into it as it condensation into water, which made sure that everyone knew where each of their opponents were.

Evan knew what Tidal Wave was, a massive vortex surrounding her that would use centrifugal strength to send the enemies of the caster get sent flying somewhere clearly away from the user.

This would make it impossible to get close to Saida, but Evan had something to handle Saida, and it was one of his favorite methods to stop mages. It was a standard mechanic of dark curse users, the cast short-circuit. If a magic spell was interrupted due to a sudden loss of mana, the user would feel a backlash that would incapacitate them for 10 seconds. That said, Saida had already had one before due to failing to cast a spell before, so it’d be doubled for sure.

In those 10 seconds, most dealers could rush at the magic caster and at least hit them once which made many dark mages get skill trees like assassin, rogue, dagger dancer, sniper, archer, and the like.

In 20 seconds, Evan could easily handle Saida and seal the situation to his advantage.

So Evan aimed with his left hand to Saida, and used a spell known for its ability to curse people for a short amount of time, that said it did have a very limited range of 2 meters.

But that wouldn't matter in this case since Evan would rush at Saida directly to trick them both into surrendering because if he had to kill the hero, probably the guards would find him and try to arrest him. And probably they'd try to kill him for killing the hero, which wasn't a good outlook for his plans.

“Dark Curse: Silence!” Evan chanted, quickly dashing towards Saida to get at the range to use the curse.

From Evan's fingertips, a small string of pitch black mana came out and surrounded Saida's neck. In that very same moment, Saida lost all her voice, which made her unable to talk, and lost her ability to control mana, so the water stopped spiraling around her. In the next 10 seconds, Evan ran towards Saida, grabbed her neck with his left arm and put his right index finger on the head of Saida while looking at Kanbe.

“By how you move... You are a newbie in fighting. Get some experience and learn some tricks. Now, you will sheath your blade and I will leave. If you don't, Saida will have a new hole. And I know that you could use holy magic, but you did not because you were unsure of what to do against a kid like me. For that, I am trying to let you live. Consider it a gift for your consideration.” Evan said as he took a deep breath, his brain was already in pain after using so many spells since it wasn’t used to doing that. ‘You know, having a brain that probably hasn’t done much exercise until now is a problem. But well, work with the limitations you have at hand, Evan.’ Evan thought to himself, hiding his headache cunningly.

Kanbe was already bothered, but Evan’s remark hit exactly in the hero’s doubts and deepened them, which didn’t help with his decision-making. But seeing the situation, Kanbe knew that Evan had the advantage and that he’d be screwed if Saida died.

“If I sheathe my blade... Will you let her go?” Kanbe asked as he lowered his stance, showcasing that Kanbe would follow a deal in order to save Saida.

Evan smirked, knowing that the hero wouldn’t leave anyone behind, and knew that he got Kanbe reeled in with the deal. Evan knew that Kanbe would accept any terms right now, and wouldn’t stop him at any moment.

“I am a man that keeps his word. I will not fight unless there is no other way. Also, fighting like this would cause unwanted problems for our kingdom. After all, I am the brother of the king… Well, this corpse is.” Evan said as he kept his smirk.

Evan felt he said a bit too much, but he was honest and did hate to lie, even if he was bluffing a bit. But Kanbe was enough bothered with Saida’s situation to notice the last part of what Evan had said.

“Why did you protect that cursed child?” Kanbe asked, as he was getting ready to sheathe his sword. If he found a gap in Evan’s defense, he would lunge to attack him, but he didn’t find any.

“If you investigate Legadonia's story, you may have a clue of who has this body now. But the diary is in Legias hands. Also, I only have minor spells now, and I am in bad shape, I am sure you noticed that. Next time I see you trying to kill my friends, I will end you.” Evan said, with a cold and stern glare that would send shivers to even seasoned fighters.

Kanbe had learned from his life how to detect when someone was being serious, and looking at Evan’s eyes… He saw a cold gaze, like if he was talking to a seasoned killer, and then he knew that Evan wasn’t fooling around.

“She won't stop.” Kanbe warned as Saida was trying to free herself from Evan’s grasp, but was too weakened by the shock to do so.

“You bastard! Kanbe, kill him!” Saida said as she hissed at Evan.

“See? And my duty is to protect her. Leave.” Kanbe said as he made his choice.

Kanbe sheathed his blade and raised his hands, to show that he was surrendering, which made Saida scowl and get angry. Evan smiled widely while releasing Saida, and aimed at Kanbe with his right hand.

“Now I will do something you will hate. Dark Curse: Paralysis.” Evan said as he used mana to cast the spell he was thinking about using.

Evan shot the curse at Kanbe, similarly to the last time it was a small thread of pitch black mana, but this time it entered inside Kanbe's body which made him unable to move. He felt like he was a statue, but what truly had happened was that the mana thread had gone to the spinal cord of the hero and changed the orders of the spinal cord to tense the muscles to the limit and prevent the muscles from moving.

“And to avoid trouble... Dark smoke.” Evan said as mana circulated inside his left palm and started creating a pitch black ball.

A ball of pure darkness got out of Evan's left palm, which Evan dropped into the ground, and it exploded upon touching the ground, releasing lots of purple smoke that made a massive smokescreen. Evan started running to Cherubs Rest while Saida tried to follow him, but was unable to keep up with Evan's speed due to the backlash and to the vast gap in their stats..

Evan returned to the orphanage and saw Legias being treated. For the first time in all of his time since he was reincarnated, he smiled with a smile filled with relief and happiness. He had prevented deaths this time, and had saved his grandson, yet there was a danger right now.

He had to make sure they knew that he was aware that they noticed his weakness. A small mind game for the two enemies he had now, so they would desist trying to attack him now that he was weakened, yet it had been risky.

“Legias will be alright?” Evan asked with a worried look.

“Of course I will be alright. Just give me a day and I will be running around the odd job HQ trying to get a juicy job.” Legias said as he chuckled to himself, trying to hide the fact he felt weak for losing to his sister.

Evan chuckled and started grinning at Legias, while the young elven boy looked extremely grateful to Evan. That made Evan feel like he had to remind Legias to not rush his recovery, in order to fully recover.

“Do not rush it.” Evan said as he patted Legias head.

“Thanks, Evan.” Legias replied as he looked at Evan with a wide smile.

Lilian looked at the two boys, and decided to get answers to know why one of her kids got terribly hurt while the other looked in perfect shape. Well, at least seeing how Evan was before going to help Legias that is.

“Will you explain what has happened?” Lillian asked with worried eyes.

“My sister Saida found me. And she went with a weird guy.” Legias replied as he looked a bit scared.

“The Hero.” Evan said as he took a deep breath.

“And they attacked Legias?” Lillian questioned the situation, considering what had truly happened.

Evan nodded while Legias just took a deep breath, letting Lillian know that it was indeed a fight against a princess and the hero meant to stop the dark lord.

“Bingo Bongo.” Evan replied as he nodded.

“And you confronted them?” Lillian asked once more, her face becoming paler by the second.

“Exactly.” Legias replied, as Lillian just tried to avoid fainting at the surprise she found this day.

“But I managed to get Legias out of danger and threatened both of the assailants. And I could have killed them... If we didn't make so many smokescreens, but that's what happens when you heat up water so much.” Evan said as he shrugged, with a wry smile.

“Yet, if you kill the hero and all the guards will be after you, which is not a good idea. Smart boy.” Lillian pointed out, her mind being too shocked to get shocked any longer. At least for this day.

“And kill the elven princess, and you will have a war in your hands, I think. Alongside, I will never kill a child of one of my former life creations.” Evan said as he massaged his forehead.

“You will have to explain that.” Lillian said as her face was utter and absolute surprise.

Evan felt like he had said too much once again, but this time it was a must to explain all. Better to get rid of the information withholding with those that should be of utmost importance for his preparation, and if all worked out… It’d mighty good for him to work with that out of the way.

“Legias can explain it. I have more important things to do. Even if I would love to explain all. The faster I can level up, the faster I can improve, and the faster I can ensure that you all can be safe in case of being attacked because of who I am in this life.” Evan explained, as he had a lot in his mind and wanted to increase his abilities as soon as possible.

Legias chuckled awkwardly, since he didn’t want to mess up and cause a misunderstanding due to several warnings his mother told him about Evan. After all, in Dawn World, Evan was ruthless to those that caused misunderstandings of such caliber.

“You should explain it. It is better. I cannot explain the details well, I am quite the forgetful boy.” Legias said awkwardly, trying to avoid issues.

Evan scowled at Legias, like a disappointed grandfather would look at his grandson who forgot basic maths, and decided to just sigh and handle the mess himself. It was a usual for Evan, but he hoped that he wouldn't have to do so anymore.

“I will explain it then. What a mess, I didn’t want to do it myself since it’d feel too crazy to even start talking about it.” Evan said as he got ready to explain what he would have to explain.

Evan sat down in a chair, and started explaining all of the homunculus creations, it’d be a mighty process for him and a bit embarrassing. And of course, he’d avoid saying things that could lead to saying the truth of Dawn World, since it probably would end up in a misunderstanding bigger than he’d want to deal with.

***

While Evan was getting ready to explain all that, far away from the orphanage and in a place where no one should be around… In a dark empty place, not fit for life, where no one could even see what was right before or beside them… In there, Namika was smiling and laughing loudly.

That dark place was Namika’s own weakened domain, one that could be placed in Terra as a way to have a chance in interfering with Terran actions, due to the fact that she preferred to have more power rather than having a massively decorated domain.

Namika had seen Evan’s fight against the hero, she didn’t plan for it, but it was far better than she had hoped. Evan had proven himself without knowing, and Namika was already planning further ahead thanks to what she had seen already.

“He has proven himself, even with the situation I prepared. I never expected that my little helping hand to Lillian would pay off this vastly, neither I expected every plan I had regarding Legias to work this well… Looking back, I sure did a gamble… But trusting Legadonia, and then doing a deal with Grandine to bring Evan as the dark lord, has paid off already.” Namika as she pondered the situation.

From within that domain, a pink ball of mana flew near Namika and from it a childishly high-pitched voice came out to answer Namika. It was Edia herself, going to talk with Namika once more, as she considered a good idea to prepare a good situation.

“Well, that’s because I helped you out, and you just took advantage of the situation of a couple of kids… Like Legias running away from Rivialt, or Zerana’s survival from that mess. And in fact, you only guided them to Lillian. It could have failed, and they’d be away.” Edia said as she scoffed.

Namika looked at the ball of mana, and sighed. She had helped those children since she didn’t like to see innocent children to suffer, but she never had planned the children to meet Evan and never had planned to have Evan going to an orphanage.

“And yet it worked out, I left things to fate in that sense… Since I never expected to get repaid for helping them in those situations, they seemed so fragile and innocent that I wanted to help them out a bit… But that should be your thing, Edia.” Namika said as she smirked at the ball of mana, ready to talk with her friend of many things.

The ball of fire moved up and down, while a giggle came out of it, and Namika looked at it with a serious face. Edia had been useful, and both goddesses were good friends, but this time it was because both of them gained profit out of this situation.

“Well, you are right. I wanted to help them, so I just made sure you gave them the push. Also, Rivialt must return to the fold. They were avid followers of mine, until Zerax asserted dominance with his little church. But remember, Zerax must not know I assisted. Otherwise, he’ll be attacking my herald too. And she’s too weak right now.” Edia said as she pondered several situations that could happen.

“You are too cunning for your own good, but well… I feel like fate itself has drawn me and Grandine to plan the resurrection of the black flame devil. I hate the idea, but better than dealing with Zerax and his mess of a plan.” Namika said as she massaged her forehead.

“Don’t be afraid of that. We have many old players of Dawn World, and none has spoken about our little dirty deed on Earth. Well, no one would believe them at all, even if they did. But the consequences of saying it would be massive already, so that’s why we ingrained a sense of not saying anything about that to any reincarnated person.” Edia said as she giggled.

Namika nodded, and sighed. She did hate to have to be this careful, since she had been against the plan of reincarnation even before its start, but democratically she couldn’t do anything about it. The other gods had been all in for this, and had been using the people of Earth as a way to change the world… Or they had tried, but most of them were such loose cannons that reeling them in was impossible, and ended up doing their shenanigans once more.

“But better someone experienced rather than what Zerax has done. A hero like Kanbe Tokugawa, to reel in that loose cannon to his side… That’s annoying, his plan seems too stupid and too direct.” Edia said as she was drinking some wine.

“Yeah, but that bastard always hides his true intentions. He is stupid, but not foolish. His plans may suck at the start, and never end up on the intended purpose, but he knows how to twist them at the right time to be even more beneficial.” Namika warned as she used mana to summons glass filled with wine, and sipped the wine. ‘Ah, good Riviltian wine. Elves have it good with wine!’ Namika thought to herself as she enjoyed the wine.

The voice from the ball of mana turned serious, and Namika shivered. She had said a fact, but Edia didn’t like to be reminded of that, since she despised Zerax above anything else. And she held enough power to overpower Namika and Zerax at the same time, which was a terrifying thought.

“That plan will fail, and Evan has proven himself beyond what we can do. Zerax won’t win this one, and he must not. I don’t care how much we must risk ourselves, but if that bastard does his plan… Evan will be a slave, just like all the reincarnated people, and that won’t be the end of it.

Namika walked further inside that darkness, while smiling widely. She had a plan, and she knew that Edia would agree with it, since it was enough mischievous to get her interested.

“Well, let’s do this plan. If you find someone that you can help out near Evan, go for it. But also, let’s make a bet with who he ends up with. After all, he is a lonely man that needs to find love… Right? Also, we could make sure he becomes a rather interesting ruler. He will be one, but if he can thank us for it… We may live without worrying about him deciding we are no longer required, and that our loot looks enough fancy for him to go for it.” Namika said as she drank wine, knowing that Edia would like that idea since she was the goddess of love.

The voice that came from the ball of mana laughed loudly, and seemed happy with what was proposed at that moment. Namika knew how to attract Edia’s interest, and make sure she accepted her craziest plans.

Now, Evan would have a lot more of problems to deal with due to that goddess interest but also would come with benefits that would prove invaluable to him and probably could also help the children of the orphanage.
