Chapter 2: Cherubs Rest And The City

Chapter 2: Cherubs Rest And The City

Evan and Lillian arrived to the city. It was a regular fantasy-style medieval city, but it seemed that this city had a sewer system and better sanitary knowledge than people had during the medieval era in the world where Edward, formerly Evan, had lived in. The buildings were made of stone, with windows made of glass, and all in all it gave of pretty rustic ambience.

There was a market in the street with some performers putting on a show and even groups of individuals who were wearing armors and all sorts of equipment. Evan thought that were adventurers, who were going to do some quests, which was a piece of information that could be useful for him.

This city was vibrant and filled with life and many kinds of people, Evan was surprised to see elves, dwarves, and even some beastmen. But he also noticed something more dark, some people had good clothes, but others had rags that barely covered their bodies and a steel collar in their necks.

This made the young dark lord feel curious but at the same time worried, even if he was feeling weak, probably due to almost drowning, and decided to ask Lillian.

“I would usually take care of myself first, but this is too interesting for that. There is slavery, no?” Evan asked, curious about the steel collars.

Lillian sounded clearly sad while walking across the streets, and that made Evan feel bad for this young nun. He didn’t want to open old wounds, specially knowing how that felt, and he could be a villain but not an ass, yet all the information he could acquire was vital right now.

“It seems that you truly know a lot about the world. Yes, there is. But... the former King tried to abolish it.” Lillian replied whie looking sad about the memories she had recalled.

“And the result was his and his wife's deaths.” Evan said, while pondering some things. 'Not to think about the death of the boy whose body I hijacked.' Evan thought to himself.

Evan finally had started piecing things together, the reason behind the prince death and the possible plans that the king of this country had. And it started seeming like a good chance to just prepare barely enough, and haul his own ass to another country… In case that the king wasn’t a complete fool, and decided to be extra careful, because that’d be a mess which Evan didn’t want to deal right away.

“Yes. What a sad fate. But we can not lose hope! Someday, everyone will be free!” Lillian said in a hopeful tone.

Evan felt worried about how Lillian could be this innocent, but at the same time he felt relieved that there were people like her. The young dark lord saw that innocence as an advantage, instead of a threat or a weakness, and could use said advantage to any of his plans.

'Too innocent. This nun is too innocent!' Evan thought to himself. “Yeah... Someday…”

“I hope to be able to see the day! But you should not worry about this. We have arrived at the orphanage.” Lillian said while walking towards the orphanage, which did surprise Evan due to its state.

The orphanage that Lillian owned was a small building with two floors that were made of wood instead of stone, the windows were also made of wood and the building was in a deplorable state. The wood seemed of the worst quality, almost rotten due to the passing of years without any decent maintenance, and there was no glass in the windows, which made this building a mess.

Evan couldn't do more than sigh and start thinking about how he would fix that hot mess called an orphanage, noticing that this situation was why the nun brought him in.

Well, the name of the orphanage was Cherubs rest, though it didn't seem like any holy being would put a foot in it, so at least he had the objective to turn it into something truly holy. It was a sort of irony he would enjoy, because he was sure that there was a reason why this place was in this state, and also could be used for his next steps of the plan.

Seeing the orphanage, and its seeming location, it looked like the reasons behind wanting to run away from this country were being countered by something that could be used for a much better plan. There were risks, but also boons that could be used to speed up his recovery and increase of power… Maybe he could even use it to gain influence over the country.

Meanwhile, Lillian was opening the door with a wide smile and clearly sounded happy, while Evan felt even more tired.

“The other kids will be happy to meet you!” Lillian excitedly said while walking inside the orphanage.

“And I will have to find a way to fix this mess alongside a way to heal my body.” Evan said, considering his situation and how badly he felt. 'What a drag.' Evan thought as he was about to enter the orphanage.

Lillian and Evan entered the orphanage only to see some bandits inside trying to find the kids in the orphanage to no avail. This angered Lillian, who started talking with an enraged tone to the drunken bandits, while Evan didn’t even know what was going on.

“What are you doing here!? This is an orphanage, not a bar!” Lillian exclaimed, clearly enraged by the actions of these bandits, who were recognized as bandits due to breaking inside the orphanage and wearing suspicious black leather armors. ‘Another attack, while Sir Rubeus is busy with the weekly Mass!? At least, they are drunk enough to not locate some kids inside! But they busted the door! And the church, at most, will fix the door and call it a day instead of protecting this orphanage! Why this is happening to us!?’ Lillian thought to herself.

The bandits laughed loudly, and ignored Lillian, while the one who seemed the leader of the drunken bandits walked near Lillian, gazed upon her body and decided to touch her face while smiling widely.

“And? We came here to get some kids and some slaves! But we found a jackpot here. That kid and you will be far better for the slave traders!” The first bandit, a dwarf with a rather long brown beard but a bald head and black eyes, said while smirking.

Evan was exhausted already, and for him this kind of acts were like a normal Monday, so he decided to be rude to these bandits and try to make them leave. But he didn't take into account that the bandits were enough drunk to be confident in stopping him and Lillian quickly, things of being tired due to almost dying.

“And I got bored already. Can you leave this place, or will I have to make you leave?” Evan calmly said, with a bored look as he gazed at the bandits. ‘Is this some sort of trial from Namika? If it is, the best I can do is to deal with it quickly. I could play the kid, but I feel that if I do that here… I am dead. Not only that, but I might die in one hit, so I can’t risk being hit by these drunkards. Shit, nightmare mode for me, dammit.’ Evan thought to himself.

“Look, the kid has guts!” The second bandit, who was a human with short red-hair and blue eyes, said as he looked surprised at the young boy’s words.

“We only need to scare him, and use him to drag the other children out.” The third, and last, bandit said, who was another human, but this one had long black hair and brown eyes.

‘That’s it, fuck it. They have accepted to be my test subjects, only that they don’t know that yet.’ Evan thought as he glared at the bandits.

Evan hated many things, due to his life as a sort of child living in high society while having to handle a toxic family, and one of those was disrespectful people who didn’t even bother to hide their intentions. The young dark lord had many rules regarding how to deal with people, and one of those was to give out a warning first, which he had given already, and then would make sure they didn’t bother anymore.

Evan decided to use these bandits as a way to test how the skills worked in this new world, and raised his hand. The feeling of mana going through Evan’s body, made the young dark lord shiver, it was like an electric current going through the body but didn’t hurt Evan at all. It just felt like releasing something that was bottled up inside his body for a really long time.

And so, Evan aimed at the heart of one of the bandits, the dwarf in fact, which made the bandit who Evan had aimed at feel like his heart was being touched by something cold. This didn't have any important effect due to the fact that the bandits were enough drunk to not even feel where they were stepping in.

Yet, once Evan felt that the necromancer spell known as Heart Grasp was working exactly how it worked back in Dawn World. The only surprising thing he noticed was that this bandit was weak enough to not require more than half a second to trigger this spell.

This alone did excite him at first, yet also he felt his own bloodlust going to his head, and this time he couldn’t control it as well as he did back in Earth.

He wanted to kill the bandits, even if he had never truly killed anyone before. These bandits had tried to interfere with his fresh start, which was a risk for his new life, and even if he was a bad guy… He had manners that these bandits lacked clearly, and they wouldn’t be missed by anyone as far as Evan knew.

“Let me test a few things. HEART GRASP!” Evan said, as he felt a sort of energy flow from his chest to his head.

Evan's hand started glowing and an illusion of a heart appeared in his hand as he crushed it. The bandit who Evan had aimed at started to vomit blood, fell to the ground and died. The rest of the bandits looked at the bandit who had recently died, not believing what they had seen, but had to face the facts. Evan felt a small headache after using the spell, but it wasn't much for him, yet that also made him feel happy and even more tired.

“If you are asking yourselves how he died, I will tell you the cause of his death. His heart was crushed. Now, if you want to live... Get out of here! If I let you, that is…” Evan said, clearly tired due to the wounds and the spell, as his smile became wide and showed his teeth. A demonic smile that showed how crazy the kid was.

The bandits were scared and literally ran for their lives, leaving behind some bags of gold. That said, Evan wasn’t going to let them go so happily since he wanted to test fire bullet… But he was just enough satisfied with the results to let them escape, and it would have been troubling in the long run to just murder three bandits right away. It was easy for Evan to consider killing when he had to kill people, which never happened, but now he felt as if he didn’t want to kill unless either absolutely required while his own rage was boiling hot, unhampered. It had been a few years since the last time he felt like this, but he managed to control it back on Earth. Yet in here, it was harder to control. Was it something from the remaining psyche of the prince that affected him, or something that the deal with Namika changed him? Evan didn’t know, but he didn’t want to let his rage grow unchecked.

Lillian looked really surprised by Evan's attack, which only made Evan feel even better. He was sure now that the spells worked exactly the same way as they did in Dawn World, which gave him a solid advantage right away. If they worked like they did in Dawn World, then he could recreate the undead he often used back when he was starting out in Dawn World.

As weak as those undead were, they could be… Useful for testing purposes, and could assist Lillian with this orphanage. Even if they could bring problems, he expected the organization in charge of this orphanage to understand that if they weren’t going to help their orphanages, they’d have to handle things.

Lillian looked clearly scared, she was ready to fight the bandits and eliminate them, but this young boy simply used a spell so calmly and killed one of them in a moment. So the first question it came to her mind was the level of Evan, since a high enough level would make him a wonderful future ahead.

“What level are you?” Lillian asked, as she looked scared of how easily Evan had killed the bandits. ‘Well, at least, the children will be safe… But what sort of individual have I saved? Hopefully he’s a good boy. But I can’t bother him with the fact that the guard usually just closes the cases, nor the fact that the king is clearly aiming to close this old orphanage.’ Lillian thought to herself.

Evan shrugged, since he didn’t know enough of this world… Lying could end up being more of an issue, not that he was a fan of lying, and he had decided to work with this situation. It could be challenging, and in worse case scenario… He only had to survive for four years, to turn the tables.

“I don't know. I have a seal on me. And it seems like that will block features like leveling, status window, skill window, inventory, journal, and recipes!” Evan said, nonchalantly, considering whether this was going to be a problem or not.

Lillian looked at Evan with a mix of fear and surprise, since those features couldn't be attained usually. The usual ones for everyone were leveling, status window, and skill window. But one who had recipes and journal could easily remember what they did to make a heavenly recipe and recreate it at any time without any mistake, or remember what they did even if they had forgotten things.

“So you can use the special features!? Even the recipes and journal!?” Lillian asked, with a clearly excited tone, due to the fact that few could even dare to do so.

“Seems that way from what I was told.” Evan replied, with a calm voice.

A voice that seemed like one of an old man of 50 years old came out of nowhere, while Evan looked around, mildly entertained by this surprise. If it was another enemy, it would mean further testing of the spells that he could use.

“And Namika chose you... What a disgrace for someone of my status!” The voice said calmly as Evan sought the source of it, but being unable to locate it. At this moment, Evan was cursing his lack of detection skills.

“Hm? Who's there?” Evan asked, trying to bait the source of that voice to appear.

Then a black book with a cover that had the title of Noche and a smiling face mask on it appeared. The book's cover seemed to be made of a strange metal, and the pages were made from some kind of black paper.

“I am the Grimoire Noche! And my name shall not be abbreviated!” The book said, clearly annoyed by the lack of knowledge Evan had right now.

Evan sighed, he had something worse than a vigilant eye of Namika, and probably someone who would be as annoying as some of his old friends. This didn’t bode well for Evan’s sanity, but he was planning on prodding the book.

“So you're the tutorial book…” Evan said, with a smirk on his face.

“How dare you compare me with a simple book!? I AM THE GRIMOIRE NOCHE! I have the power to destroy this city on my own! AND I SHALL BE ADDRESSED WITH THE APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF RESPECT!” Noche exclaimed, enraged by Evan’s words.

“What a drag…” Evan said, as he took a deep breath and started noting down the weakness of Noche in order to abuse it in case it was an enemy.

Lillian was as pale as a ghost when she saw Noche, and she knelt down to start praying. Evan noticed and did not understand why she was praying. Evan looked at Lillian, and his curiosity acted up, so he decided to ask Lillian why she was so scared while also worried.“What's wrong, sister?” Evan asked, as it came out from the depths of his soul. The praying woman was bringing up some bad memories to Evan’s memory, and that was meddling with his curiosity.

“I saved the life of the Dark Lord. I have sinned, and oh, what a sin!” Lillian said, as she was sweating due to the stress the situation caused to her.

“Dark Lord?” Evan asked, his curiosity peaking to heights he never knew of.

“That's the title that those who are Namika's chosen ones have.” Noche replied, nonchalantly, as he floated around Evan.

Evan got extremely worried, due to being quite the reader of light novels. He feared that he was now like a demon lord, or worse. That alone meant that if he was caught, he’d be the public enemy number 1 of the entire world… And probably many would love the idea of using a pitchfork on him.

“So am I the Dark Lord? I'm getting Demon Lord vibes.” Evan asked, as he feared the worst.

“Indeed, and you should be glad that I, Grimoire Noche, am here to aid you in your quest!” Noche replied, with glee in his voice.

Evan wasn’t cartoonishly evil, he was a villain, but a smart villain. He would not start right away with evil deeds, specially the kind that Noche would like, without having enough prep work to do it and not suffer any consequence for it. It’d be like asking a hero to interfere at the get-go, and he wanted to keep that dark rage that boiled over in check, since he didn’t want to lose his sanity over some uncontrollable bloodlust.

“You will help a lot, so let's be good partners! But... No destroying the world, no hurting races... Let's just do the tutorial first, fix my body and let's see what we can do!” Evan said, trying to find a reason to not be cartoonishly evil as other villains. He wouldn’t go through a established path, which probably would end up in his death at the hands of a fool.

“Hum... Better start small, indeed!” Noche said, considering what Evan had said and finding a proper logic for it.

Then a hidden door that was in the left wall opens and five kids appear, 2 boys and 3 girls. This alone made Evan shiver, feeling like his luck back in Dawn World was better than the one he had right now. And his luck was clearly bad back in Dawn World, which didn't make him feel happy at all.

One of the boys was a tall elf with long white hair, golden eyes, and he was wearing a leather armor, black trousers and black boots. He clearly had a sleek body, but most elves had sleek bodies from the start, but it was clear that he was the first kid to notice Evan from the start with his senses.

The other boy was a dwarf with short brown unkempt hair and purple eyes who was wearing a white shirt, blue trousers and a blue boots. He looked surprisingly toned for a kid, and tall for a young boy, but Evan decided to not make any questions about it.

The first girl was a tall human with long red hair and red eyes who was wearing a white dress, white socks, and a pair of brown sandals. Her hair was slightly wavy, and was styled as a long bob.

The second girl had short spiky black hair, wolf ears, green eyes, a scar on her left cheek, and she was wearing a leather armor, a short skirt and a pair of black boots. You could see her tail moving up and down extremely quickly, as she was a wolf beastkin.

The third girl had red skin, a pair of curved horns, long blue hair, blue eyes, and she was wearing a black dress, black stockings, and a pair of black stiletto heels. Evan quickly recognized the girl as a demon, and was thinking about what kind of demon she was, but seeing the strong charm this girl had already as a child, he was considering whether to ask if she was a succubus or not.

“Well, your plan to prepare first has failed.” Noche calmly said, while Evan looked clearly surprised.

Evan quickly answered with sarcasm, while Lillian started sweating after being sure it was really happening. But inside Evan’s mind, anyone who could read minds could hear Evan cursing his own luck as much as he could, alongside a couple of curses towards Namika for putting him in that situation.

“You don't say…” Evan said, with clear sarcasm in his voice, angry at the situation at hand.

“Don't worry, they are not going to betray the orphanage. And I won't betray you.” Lillian said as she took a deep breath.

Evan raised an eyebrow when he heard Lillian’s words. He never expected such trust so quickly, but he was going to accept it… With reticence, but he would accept that trust. After all, this could be useful for him… Even if now it showed a clear lack of data, which he would prefer to not have.

“Why?” Evan asked, his mind being distrustful of the words spoken by Lillian.

“I am done for either way. The pope will kill me.” Lillian said, with sad eyes, as she took a deep breath.

All the children looked worried about Lillian, and seemed quite loyal to Lillian herself. Evan found that really nice, but couldn’t trust everything he saw right now. It could just be a trap, but right now, he’d play the naive boy in a margin that could be acceptable without raising any suspicion.

“Why do you think we would expose you!? We have all been thrown away by our parents!” The dwarf said with a serious gaze.

“Indeed! So what they say is right might be wrong.” The elf said nonchalantly, as he kept his composure.

“And no one would believe us!” The wolf beastkin said as she smiled widely.

“Also... We would gain nothing by betraying the Dark Lord. So why not try to be friends with him?” The human said quietly, as she tried to go behind Lillian and avoid the sunlight.

“Indeed!” The demon girl said as she walked closer to Evan, and smirked at him.

“I will need a lot of information right now... A lot!” Evan muttered to himself.

Noche and the rest started laughing, while Evan felt like he required some information that he was not getting, but decided to take it on his own stride. After all, rushing would be far more dangerous than waiting carefully and learning more on his own stride.

***

As the surviving bandits ran to escape from the mess they were in, they were met by a young man with long black hair, red eyes, pale skin that made him look like a porcelain doll, very long nails that acted as claws. This man was wearing a brown tunic with a hood which was covering his head, a brown belt that held a sheathed dagger, and a pair of boots.

“I asked you to get slaves, and extort the places for money. Not to run like the fools you are,” The hooded man said as he glanced at the two bandits.

“Sir, there’s a mage in that orphanage! A brat who is a mage! Rigbo died instantly! Instantly! What should have we done? The information we had from the church was flawed from the start, someone prepared a trap to use us as bait!” The red-haired bandit said as he bowed to the man.

“A mage, you say? I guess that mage was the one Caroline was hoping to meet, by what our men deciphered in her letters. A necromancer working for Caroline? Now I have seen it all, and I am 800 years old. Seriously, a necromancer working for the archbishop. But why is that archbishop so interested in this place? Is she growing her own meals here? Seeing how many boys she has dated, I wouldn’t be surprised to call her a wannabe succubus. Either way, I suppose you have outrun your utility. If they report this to the guard, I am sure that we are boned.” The hooded man said, as he bit the throat of the red-haired bandit, and started drinking the bandit’s blood.

“We did as you asked for all our lives, sir Erdigan! Please, some mercy! We didn’t know about the brat!” The last bandit said, as he begged for his life.

As the hooded man finished his meal, he dropped the corpse and a black fog came out of his left hand and infiltrated the bandit’s body. After a few seconds, the corpse looked like it was rotting but somehow alive as it tried to get up while looking at the last bandit.

“I guess that monsters inside the city will get the vampire hunters invested in trying to locate me. Then they’ll find traces of a vampire around this area and investigate. Seeing how it seemed like a brat, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was another baron vampire trying to avoid getting some sort of safety by making a deal with that minx. Either way, best to clean up the situation without risking myself, am I right?” The hooded individual said as he started leaving to prevent being caught by the guard.

As the zombie moved to attack at the bandit, the bandit ran away and tried to avoid being killed by the zombie, only to be bitten by it as it charged forward. But the bandit still managed to escape, and started running towards the guard while sweating.

“Damnable vampire bastard! He chose to clean up and try to kill me! Well, if he wants to go that way, I might as well give him up and try to find a way to settle things!” The last bandit said as he ran to find the guard.

But the bandit felt week after five minutes of running, and fell to the ground due to exhaustion. He had a strong fever too, and felt like his body was burning hot, which made him panic. Zombies, unlike other undead monsters, held a very specific virus that made any living being that was bitten to become a zombie in less than a day’s time.

Due to the high lethality of the virus, and due to the virus requiring to be in a living host to survive, it was nigh impossible to produce a vaccine for the virus and so once bitten by a zombie it was better to be burned to nothing.

The bandit knew that, but still tried to find a way to survive, only to be stopped by a man wearing a golden full plate armor that had a massive war hammer as a weapon, as the infected individual was starting to bleed from his eyes.

“Hm. A zombie is around, well… May Zerax’s light guide you to the afterlife. Because I most certainly do not want to do that.” The armored man said, with a gruff voice, as he swung his hammer vertically to finish the infected bandit before he fully turned.

As the infected bandit had his head crushed, the armored man started moving along to seek the zombie inside the city. It was a dangerous situation since the zombies could infect citizens, even if an adult could easily wipe them out with just a heavy attack on their head, and that could lead to a distressing situation.

As the guard moved along, he saw the zombie who was being slain in a moment by a white haired individual, with white skin, black eyes, and a scar on his left cheek, who was wearing a white office suit, a black tie, black socks, and black oxford shoes. This individual was wielding an arming sword that had an X shaped guard, that was pure white.

“Oh, Ricky. The slayer. Why is a paid killer dealing with this?” The armored man asked, while clearly lowering his guard by putting his hammer on his back, as he smirked at the individual.

“Oh, Royce. A captain of the royal guard. Just like the meathead that Matthew is. Why are you here instead of near the new king? Weren’t you to be his loyal lapdog and yes-man?” Ricky said, with clear intention of starting the fight as he was getting ready to attack Royce.

“Well, a royal guard should make sure the citizens are safe.” Royce replied.

“Making sure the tax flow still exists, you mean. Either way, I was on my way to a clean-up job. And found this zombie. It’s free experience, so why not partaking in it?” Ricky said as he smirked.

“Well, that’s true. But for a level 1 monster… That’s a damn waste of time for a killer like you.” Royce said, as he cackled.

“Not really. If it caught my target, I’d be in trouble. And may Zerax’s light guide me away from that kind of trouble.” Ricky said as he smiled.

“At least you are not a follower of Namika. Otherwise, I’d bash your head in for being a filthy heathen.” Royce said with a serious gaze.

“You would love to have that reason. Isn’t that why you resent your sister for going with Matthew?” Ricky said as he started to leave the area.

“You are a bastard, Ricky. I hope you know that.” Royce said as he was tempted to punch Ricky.

“Yeah, but a smart bastard. Since I know that you can’t hit me until it’s midnight. Since you have to protect the citizens, and you can’t attack them without a proper reason during your turn.” Ricky said as he started moving quickly to avoid a fight.

Royce simply sighed and allowed Ricky to move along, as a royal guard like him could only do that without proof of Ricky doing illegal actions right at that moment or without an order to apprehend a member of the assassin guild.
