Chapter 3: The Bite Of Misfortune

Chapter 3: The Bite Of Misfortune

Evan saw a little white orb flying out from the corpse of the bandit whose heart he had previously crushed, and instinctively knew that it was the soul of that bandit. Evan quickly grabbed it while no one was looking and swallowed it, since more status points could be far more useful than none at all. It tasted like water, and it only gave Evan 1 status point, while Lillian looked at the body and did not know what to do with it. Evan found the status gain so small, that it was barely enough for him to even ponder if it was worth it, but it was also relieving since that meant that it wasn’t as powerful as he had expected.

“What should I tell the guards?” Lillian asked with a worried face, trying to find out a way to avoid getting into trouble.

“That you acquired a skeleton tamed by a monster tamer. Oh, light of the darkness, shine upon this corpse and create an undead to aid my friends. CREATE MINOR UNDEAD!” Evan said as he focused his mind in the act of making his mana to modify a body and all the surrounding air to suit what he was imagining to create.

A small ball of darkness came out from Evan's hand and went inside the corpse, which made it start to change, the armor that the bandit had worn turned into iron armor, the flesh melted and flowed inside the armor.

It kept going until only a skeleton remained, and it started moving. It surprised the other children and Lillian, while Evan nodded and looked happy because the necromancy of Dawn World worked exactly how he knew it worked. Likewise, it still required materials, which were corpses of living beings and mana.

Necromancy took time and depended on many factors:

One of those factors was how long had it transpired from the death of the living being that was used as a material. Mainly, it was due to how much residual mana lingered on the body and that affected to all kinds of monsters. The more mana that was lingering, the stronger the mutations of the body would become.

Another of the factors was the quality of the corpse, the bandit that Evan killed was high quality mainly because of how Evan killed it and so the skeleton became stronger than the usual skeleton and better equipped.

The best corpses were those that died peacefully or due to exhaustion, followed up by those who were poisoned and so on. If the amount of damage dealt to the corpse was low, the quality of the monster created with it would be higher.

And the last factor, was mainly the experience of the material used. It didn’t matter much, since most monsters knew instinctively how to fight, but it would speed up the process of reaching their full potential. That said, it could be extremely overlooked since in a matter of hours or days of training… A skeleton like the one Evan made could become far better at using the sword than the material itself.

“Now, this small skeleton will do everything I tell him to do. Of course, I will order him to follow all of your orders.” Evan explained calmly, as Lillian did hold her hands together as if she was praying.

“An extra hand will come in handy.” Lillian said, as she was sweating, considering how weird Evan was.

“See? All's well that ends well.” Evan said as he smirked, considering that he had cleaned his own mess on his own.

Lillian looked tired, which again roused up Evan's curiosity, and nodded while calming herself. Well, more like deciding to ignore the most outrageous things of Evan and accept that Evan was like that.

“If you have another trick like that, please let me know. But we should have contacted the guard.” Lillian said as she took a deep breath.

Evan noticed that he should have been more careful regarding that, he almost ran into a problem due to wanting to test things. Of course, there’d be regulations regarding the self-defense and the usage of monsters as butlers. Things he would have to pick up quickly, to prevent more issues with the guard since it would be better to have them way out of his sight rather than close to his neck.

“And what would they do? Also, I have tons of tricks like this one. Well, had. Ugh, I hate the tutorial seal... I could have done a Royal Guard Skeleton by now just with this corpse. The quality wasn’t the finest, seeing that the lingering mana wasn’t that great from the get-go, but the body was in a perfect shape.” Evan asked, as he considered the entire situation. If the situation went akin to taxes and the IRS, he could happily have doomed himself for not knowing that.

“Nothing. They would file a report and do nothing. The guards don't care about our orphanage anymore.” Lillian replied, as she lowered her look to the ground, sad that her orphanage was completely ignored by the ones who should be upholding the law in the cities.

“Step by step we will fix that. Meanwhile, I need info. So I will meet with the other children.” Evan said as he moved along, while keeping a smile. He had plans to make the orphanage a bigger place, and they were going to start with

Evan started to meet the kids that were in the orphanage and talked with the elf who was the first he saw when the kids got out of their hiding place. He needed to have as much information as possible as fast as possible, but the elf looked reluctant to trust in him, so he was the first target to impress for Evan.

“Well, I will need to know your names. But first, I should introduce myself. For now, I am Edward Leonhard. But, you can call me, Evan.” Evan said, as he introduced himself to the elf.

“My name is Legias. For the elves, having white hair means we are treated as if we are cursed, and my father decided to abandon me because of it.” Legias said as he looked curiously at Evan.

“Okay, Legias. I understand, but I still feel like it's stupid. If someone is cursed, it will show symptoms sooner or later.” Evan said, considering that it could be just a difference between Dawn World and this world.

“I see that you are smarter than my father! I will look forward to hearing what happened to you.” Legias said as he smiled widely.

Then Evan turned to the dwarf, who looked happy and excited while admiring the armor that the skeleton had, while mostly trying to not think in what was wearing it. He seemed oddly used to that kind of insane situations, and learned how to deal with them.

“My turn! I am Flint! I have a talent for enchanting magic, blacksmith skills, and I was abandoned because I pissed off the elder. The only thing I said was that using bombs when the structure was unstable would kill the workers that were inside.” Flint said, while admiring the skeleton, excited about the fact of the skeleton being capable of using said armor.

“And they died. Dumbass Elder. Reminds me of a certain group of people who never listened to me when I warned them that their plans were foolish, stupidly dangerous, and dangerously stupid. The last two are not the same.” Evan said as he took a deep breath.

“Indeed, they are not the same! And yeah, the elder was stupid…” Flint replied as he nodded in agreement.

Before Flint could keep talking, the wolf girl interrupted him while being really excited to talk with Evan. Evan took it as the typical childish excitement that children had, but considered that as a good trait instead of an annoyance. The annoyance would be if a noble was so excited that interrupted others just to talk with him, since that would mean that he was attracting so much attention to himself and that always was a bad thing.

“Me now! I am one of the last members of the wolf tribe. My name is Zerana. My parents were captured and enslaved, I was abandoned when that happened.” Zerana said while smiling.

“As I thought... This world is as rotten as what I was used to.” Evan said with a sad face, considering how corrupt this world was by what he was hearing and seeing.

“I will make the most of my life and I will not follow revenge!” Zerana proclaimed with a wide smile.

Evan decided to respect Zerana, since she reminded him of a close friend he had, and started thinking in what would that friend do in this situation... Only to dismiss immediately after thinking that he would probably run into problem with girls, which was something he was not ready to handle. During that moment, the human walked calmly towards Evan while looking clearly tired and sad.

“Now is my turn. My name is Rose. I am extremely sick and for that reason my parents abandoned me.” Rose said as she looked at Evan with fearful eyes, feeling he would hate her too.

This story surprised Evan, mostly because he had almost died and found Lillian quickly. Well, more like she found him, so he decided to ask Lillian.

“Seriously? How hard is to find a healer, Lillian?” Evan asked, his instincts screaming at him that this shouldn’t be normal.

“Not so hard, but if she is sick because of a curse... Dispelling it will be a challenge.” Lillian said, as Evan started trying to remember everything he recalled of curses in Dawn World seeing how similar the world was.

Evan looked at Rose and noticed that she had fangs big enough to make him think that she was a vampire. But a vampire living in the daylight? That was bizarre even for Evan, but his thought process got interrupted by the demon girl.

“My turn! I'm Vivienne Valvatroz! Former princess of the Demon Kingdom! My father got killed by his own brother. My mother then betrayed me when she saw my high intelligence and vitality, as she saw me as a threat to her sister-in-law and my uncle. So they abandoned me and left me to die!” Vivienne said as she walked near Evan while keeping an eye on his reaction.

Evan decided to just make up a more or less understandable cover story, without raising alarms. Probably the death of the prince, and how he died, would be the news of this country as fast as wildfire burning through a dried tree.

“Quite similar to my story. Someone betrayed my parents and attacked the carriage we were in. Luckily I got out alive but lost one eye, my body is a bloody mess even after being healed, and I have this tutorial seal on me. Now I am working on taking the seal out of my body, recovering my eye and restoring my body!” Evan said as he took a deep breath.

“Truly not what It expected. For the former prince of the human kingdom to be betrayed and have to stay in an orphanage like this.” Legias said as he looked clearly surprised.

“Didn't ask for it. But, well, life is a bitch!” Evan said as he shrugged.

The kids starting laughing until Rose started coughing and had a high fever, Lillian grabbed her and carried her to a room. Evan looked at Rose, knowing one way to ensure that the kids would trust him and not betray him right away. Also, he felt some sort of interest. While being good at planning and dealing with the dark side of humanity, Evan was completely useless in positive relationships… And a bit dense on those.

The bedrooms of the orphanage were all the same. A normal bed with white sheets, a wooden closet, a wooden desk with a wooden chair and a window to look at the city.

Evan got too intrigued about Rose's condition and was truly doubting his own idea that a daylight vampire could not exist. That said, he thought that this world was different from Dawn World, so he decided to ask someone with far more experience than him.

“Noche.” Evan coldly said, his intuition screaming at him once more.

“What?” Noche asked as he floated around Evan.

“Can you show me her status?” Evan asked with a worried face.

“Of course! I am the Grimoire Noche!” Noche replied with a proud tone, but was puzzled due to Evan’s question.

Evan nodded at Noche, and looked how the book was puzzled. At that moment, he wanted to burn Noche, but controlled himself. He had his misgivings, and he was aware of them, but he wouldn’t let them become a problem.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

“Do so, then. I want to check one thing out.” Evan ordered coldly.

“Which is...? If it is her three sizes, you should wait a few more years!” Noche teased Evan, chuckling to himself.

“Unlike what probably your previous owners were, I am not that perverted. I want to see if she is a daylight vampire.” Evan said as he scoffed at the book’s teasing.

“That is foolish! But her sickness seems like... Vampiric starvation.” Noche said, not wanting to believe Evan’s theory, since it was crazy to consider that a humanoid vampire would be in an orphanage.

“Noche. Status.” Evan coldly said, as he was considering using another spell.

“Okay! FULL ANALYSIS!” Noche said, as his pages started turning blue.

Noche did cast a spell and a status window appeared in front of Evan. But it was different than the one Evan had, extremely different.

Vampiric starvation (8/10): This vampire has not been drinking blood for a long time. If this stays like this, the vampire will starve to death.

Evan sighed and looked at Rose when she woke up, simply thinking a solution for her issue. She looked rather surprised that Evan was just at her side, and was worried that he had found her out.

“Well, you have to do some explaining.” Evan said as he looked at Rose with a cold look.

“You saw my status. Yes, I'm a dirty vampire. I should die of starvation.” Rose said as she crossed her arms and looked down.

Noche floated near Rose, seemingly quite angry, but also worried. Evan couldn’t understand that living book at all, but Evan wasn’t just a villain that enjoyed that everyone suffered while he stayed safe, and had decided to help that cute and innocent vampire.

“Foolish girl! You are a vampire! And what? For that, should you die!? Fool!” Noche exclaimed, getting angry about Rose’s words.

“Rose.” Evan simply said that to get the vampire’s attention.

“Yes?” Rose responded as she looked weakly at Evan.

Evan took a deep breath, not believing what he was going to say, and straight up cringing about the mere idea he had. Rose tilted weakly her head, not knowing what Evan would say, but she was ready to be kicked from the orphanage.

“Drink my blood.” Evan said calmly. It would be a problem if Rose died right after he joined the orphanage and decided to make things better, so he chose the most efficient path to help her out.

Both Rose and Noche were stunned by Evan’s words, one couldn’t believe what she was hearing, and the other was straight up thinking that Evan was more of a hero than a dark lord. Which did hit the wrong spot in Noche’s mind, but nothing that Evan would care much about.

“Huh!?” Both Rose and Noche exclaimed at the same time.

Evan felt like he needed a good explanation, without giving away the fact that he wanted to help an innocent, since he already had a reputation to withhold, but also to not cause a massive distrust.

“If you die, Lillian will be sad. I owe her my life, so if I can help those she cares about... I will do anything.” Evan explained, trying to take out the misunderstanding.

“My parents abandoned me because of what I am! I'm just a dirty vampire!” Rose exclaimed as she was about to cry.

“You think so? I think that you are a cute vampire. I hate that rotten thinking that vampires are bad. We can all coexist, can't we? Even if we can't coexist, can't we at least try?” Evan said as he scratched his head, remembering the words an old friend of his would use to calm down people angry at both of them.

“Evan…” Rose said as she blushed brightly.

“At this rate, I will puke. Too sweet for me.” Noche remarked as he was doing gagging sounds.

“Come on, drink to your heart's content.” Evan said, annoyed by Noche’s remarks, while making sure to show his neck.

Rose moved her mouth close to Evan's neck and bit him. Rose started drinking blood until she was feeling better, but Evan felt extremely weak. Then Rose bit her index finger and put a bit of her blood on the wound, and that blood healed Evan until he was feeling better.

“Cool ability. Only works with blood deprivation?” Evan said, amazed by the ability.

“Yes. But I also left a mark. After all, in vampire culture, when someone lends blood to a vampire... It's like a friendship bond between the human and the vampire.” Rose said as she was red-faced,

“And in case that the human is of the other sex... It is a marriage proposal.” Noche added, with a grumpy tone.

Evan started panicking once he heard that, mainly because that activated all kinds of alarms in his head and that he was being rewarded, as he was usually rewarded for doing any good deeds. After all, no good deed goes unpunished.

“WHAAAAAAAT!? Rose, tell me that I didn't propose to you.” Evan said as his mind started panicking, considering what to do and cursing his old friend.

“Noche is right unless if it is done by kids. Then it is only a friendship that will last forever.” Rose said as she covered her face.

Evan sighed after knowing that, he felt like that surprise took at least 10 years of his life right away. And that wasn't something he was used to handling, but that said... He felt happy because he could help someone instead of being just a lost and dense idiot in terms of positive relationships. He still was a dense idiot regarding those, but at least he helped.

“Dodged a bullet.” Evan said as he took a deep breath. 'I don't want to be known as a lolicon!' Evan thought to himself.

“Yeah... Being married at this age…” Rose quietly said as she kept her face covered.

Rose blushed deeply while Lillian entered, seeing the entire situation and not understanding what was going on, but she was happy to see Rose feeling better.

“Are you feeling better, Rose!?” Lillian said as she smiled widely.

“Yes.” Rose quietly said.

“What a relief.” Lillian said as she placed one hand on her chest, and felt a massive relief.

Lillian looked at Evan's neck, and her face went pale in a matter of seconds. Now Evan's neck had a bite scar, and Lillian didn't know that Rose was a vampire. So she thought that Evan had been attacked by a vampire, but didn't understand why.

“What happened?” Lillian asked as she squinted her eyes.

“I have to explain this…” Rose said, as she was so embarrassed that steam could get out of her head.

“She is a daylight vampire. I had that feeling since I saw her fangs.” Evan said as he shrugged.

“Humanoid vampires are supposed to be extinct…” Lillian said as she looked surprised.

“Yeah, and now I am the only one.” Rose said, clearly trying to make this the quickest possible to hide her embarrassment.

“You lent her your blood, Evan?” Lillian asked as she looked at Evan with a stern look.

“Yes. I wouldn't like that she died when I had the chance to help her.” Evan replied as he just wanted to get over with this.

Lillian started blushing and couldn't avoid sending some envious glares at Rose. Even a little girl had more luck with men than her, who was only sought either by teens or bandits, and that alone made her feel sad and jealous over it while depressing her. The reason? Because in the church of Zerax, loving others was allowed with some exceptions and rules, but Lillian did never have the luck to find a good man for her. Rose was simply smiling with her face red as a tomato, which made Noche stare blankly at her. Evan was tired of this situation, so went directly to his bed, because having his blood taken wasn't an easy thing and Noche decided to just leave before puking due to how dense Evan was.

“I feel like I was tricked.” Evan said as he scratched his head, not understanding what he had done with two girls at once. But he had a nagging feeling that someone he knew would be laughing loudly in this situation.

“No shit, Sherlock! Rose even left a mark on you. That hussy! At least, do not deny the truth!” Noche exclaimed as he floated quickly around Evan.

“A mark?” Evan asked, clueless about what Noche was talking about.

“Reflection.” Noche calmly said as mana came out of his body.

Noche cast a spell and a mirror appeared in front of Evan, which showed him the bite scar on his neck. This made Evan start sweating due to the nerves, and because he was thinking that it was like exchanging vows.

“Didn't dodge the bullet. I have to talk with Rose about that…” Evan said as he started sweating, not noticing that since he was of the same biological age he wouldn’t be considered a lolicon.

“That is not the marriage mark. That is the mark that shows you are the master of a vampire.” Noche explained while cackling.

“What do you mean?” Evan asked, fearing the answer since probably it would be a messy one.

“Pretty simple, you dense idiot! That mark is telling to the other vampires that a vampire owes her life to you.” Noche replied as he used his body to whack Evan in the head, just to groan after whacking Evan.

“I am fucked, ain't right?” Evan asked as he was getting pale due to the fear of being called a lolicon.

“At this rate? I give you 2 days. After those days you will have a harem of 3 women. Nice going, Hero... Oh, wait! You are the Dark Lord, dammit! Why would you do this kind of foolish thing!?” Noche exclaimed as he wanted to shoot Evan in the head.

“Because I have my own morality! Also, I gained a lot of allies today!” Evan retorted, as he was trying to avoid being considered a lolicon for helping someone in need.

“Yeah. Wait... Oh oh ooh! You genius! I didn't know that kind of plan! You help them and make them trusted friends! That way, you don't have to worry about betrayal! For once, I have a smart Dark Lord. Finally!” Noche said, misunderstanding clearly the explanation Evan gave to Noche.

“Give me a break…” Evan said as he felt more tired than usual, due to all the situation and wanting nothing more than to sleep off the embarrassing situation he was facing.

Evan started sleeping while Noche was floating around, but even in the dreams, Evan cursed his ironic luck and didn't sleep as well as one would expect. Specially after having some nightmares related to his past back in Earth.
