Chapter 10: Unwanted Truths.

Chapter 10: Unwanted Truths.

Evan started reading books to be capable to complete the second and third quest and learned all that he needed. He already knew that there were 3 continents due to what he had learned before, but now he knew the names of the other continents and found information about a fourth that brought some suspicions to his mind.

The beastkin and the dragons are in the continent of Artamyria, a continent filled with high mountains and valleys, where the two races had to get used to fight against powerful monsters that either lived in the valleys or were flying monsters. After several centuries of heavy infighting, to be able to stop the strong monsters from going to the other continents, they created two kingdoms.

One kingdom was the kingdom of Dragons, Baalfira, which usually was closed to the normal people from other races due to it being close to an active volcano, which was in the depths of the biggest valley that connected this kingdom with the neighboring one, and yet was one of the wealthiest countries.

The other was Sansifta that was in the other side of a valley filled with high mountains, known as the valley of death thanks to the volcano that was in its depths, where the numerous beastkin clans united under the banner of the Wolf Clan for many years. That was until the Tiger Clan took absolute control, and logically there was a massive resistance from clans like the monkey clan and the wolf clan who tried to allow all the clans to have the right to choose their path with votes and participation. This had caused a civil war in Baalfira, in which the tiger clan almost eliminated the wolf clan and most of the remains of that clan were turned into slaves.

In the other continent, Sharaktu'rar, it's a desert where there were the demon kingdom and the angel kingdom.

The angels only lived in the holy city of Asthalos, which is a floating city that floats above the continent and was as big as the continent itself. This city produced a specific healing item known as panacea, which healed most of the wounds and afflictions someone had. This reminded Evan of an experiment he did in Dawn World, using a special item he had crafted known as floating core, which literally allowed a being to float for an indefinite amount of time.

And the demons lived in the continent, in which their kingdom known as Sharasta was, and made quite the research in how to weaponize mana for their plans of capturing the angels to obtain panacea. The demons loved to be in heated places, and so many demons lived in a nomadic way, moving from one place to another of Sharasta.

But that was not all, Evan also learned that there were all kinds of slaves in Elstivia. From hard labor slaves to slaves that were used to make experiments and not only that, it was extremely hard to regain your freedom since after you paid off the debt you had to pay the monthly taxes so, in the end, you ended with debt again. And in the end, that was a cycle in which as a slave, those enslaved would never be free again.

Evan was disgusted by the revelation he had. He could have been a bad guy, but at least he did not trap people like the country was doing. Stealing from them was one thing, but this was sealing their fate for all of their lives.

Noche had felt the disgust of Evan and appeared in front of him, while his voice had a tone of pure sarcasm. This tired Evan more than he would ever admit, and he wasn't in the mood to go against Noche with a clear explanation.

“Congratulations! You managed to complete the three first quest in less than a month.” Noche said with a sarcasm worthy of someone who had been waiting for a long time to continue doing their duty.

“I feel that sarcasm.” Evan said with a tired look, not wanting to deal with Noche right now.

“Of course. I expected that it would take you some hours. But I would love if you could have gone faster.” Noche said as he floated around Evan. ‘Since the faster you go, the faster we can increase your level and the faster you can start building up an army.’ Noche thought to himself.

“The books were hard to find! History books... More like finding an encyclopedia!” Evan said as he scowled.

“Well, at least now you have your skill and status window open! Now you only have to level up, and we will know all the remaining quests!” Noche said in an upbeat tone.

“Easy to say it. But how I will level up? I am a kid. I don’t think they’ll let a kid go alone outside, and let’s be honest… A necromancer shows their might once they have enough corpses to work with, but I can’t just parachute the monsters to areas where they can just grind the levels for me.” Evan said as he pondered a few solutions to the conundrum.

“Kill someone. A guard, for example. It’s simple to do so and get a bunch of levels at once. If you can’t fight many, then the best way is to kill those easy to kill by tricking them.” Noche said as he floated around.

“Yes, and have the entire guard after me. Right now, the king can't go after me because I am in an orphanage. The very first second that one attempts something at me, it will attract enough attention to cause either a rebellion or a massive PR headache. And if they use an assassin, they won't be able to attack me right away, thanks to Saida. I should search some way to kill a monster that causes troubles.” Evan said, as he had found a way to avoid the dangers of Noche’s proposal and still level up quickly.

“Why?” Noche asked as he tilted his body.

“To take out any chance of being suspected of being the Dark Lord, to get better reputation, and to make it impossible to get attacked. Now, they can't because I could unleash such a PR headache that makes it unbearable. Specially if the truth of me using the corpse of the prince comes out, which will probably stir some suspicions. Don't know if it'll work, but at least it will cause the king to have to take time to think things through. If in the meantime, I can heal myself... I can handle most of the half-assed attempts on my own, and build an undead army to defend myself for long enough. No matter how weakened I am, as long as I can produce undead... I am not that easy to deal with.” Evan said, as he scratched his chin, the problem lied that his go-to spell was blocked due to the tutorial seal. Create Master Undead would be perfect for this kind of situations, but he had it lowered to Create Minor Undead due to the seal.

“Good planning. I can see the reasoning behind it, also the king shouldn't be looking for you. He'll have to wait until the situation has cooled down, and by then probably you will be healed. Yet, after the age ceremony... Everyone will know it. After all, the age ceremony is a ceremony where the Pope of the church of Zerax will pray to the gods to give you a job skill. Yours as you can guess will be Dark Lord.” Noche said as he was informing Evan of the reason behind his impatience regarding him leveling up.

“So, I am done for just after the ceremony. Because probably I will be in the middle of the church of Zerax because we can’t be bothered to find anyone of the other religions without spending precious time. In short, I will have to prepare to either blast my way out of here or to overtake the area.” Evan said as he considered a few plans in a hurry due to the surprise given by Noche. ‘Damnit, I have a clock ticking and a damned death sentence if I don’t prepare for it… Ugh! Four years are barely enough for me to prepare, goddamnit! This is nightmare difficulty, no?’ Evan thought to himself, as he hated to be unprepared for this kind of situation.

“Unless you prepare for it.” Noche said as he chuckled, knowing how Evan was taking the news and his desire to tease the young dark lord a bit.

“Obviously, you damnable book! But for that, I will need to find allies, have an escape way for everyone, and a base for all of us. I am not staying in this damned country! By what I did read, the main products of this country are food and slaves. This country would need a massive work to fix it, and one I don’t want to even consider right now because I am sure there are templars looking forward to me becoming the dark lord to go all Deus Vult on me!” Evan exclaimed, stressed due to the situation he was suddenly put in.

“I am not a book, you crazy bastard. And moreover, you could even get this kingdom, and fix it. But you need to prepare well. Come on, you were known as Lord Hades. With enough hard work, this should be a walk in the park for you.” Noche said as he sounded angry.

“I will have to contact Grandine. If she is lady Caroline, it will be a safe bet for our plan.” Evan said as he took a deep breath, considering the situation he was in.

“Indeed. After all, getting you healed is a priority. Once you are healed, and can start moving along with some plans, you should be able to handle enough things to survive long enough to defend yourself.” Noche said as he pondered a possible plan he could handle.

Evan went to start preparing to go to visit the archbishop Caroline who should be able to restore his body and maybe even help him. It was a vital part of the plan, and he wouldn't mess it up for any reason.

***

Meanwhile, the archbishop was getting up from her bed, in her house. The archbishop’s house was a white manor made of white stone, that had two floors filled with windows that showed all the manors and houses of the nobility that were in Crelens, since it was in the street where most of the nobility lived in, and didn't have curtains to cover what was inside the house.

In the first floor, there was a living room where you could find a pair of bookshelves, which were filled with various types of books, in the wall that connected the living room with the kitchen. Then on the wall near the entrance, there were a pair of windows made of glass of the highest quality, a small crystal table with some expensive furniture on top of it, and a big brown couch where people could sit down.

On the left side of the house, there was the kitchen, in which pretty much there was an oven and a table made of wood where the archbishop could cook something, and the bathroom that was a big bathroom with ceramic tiles, 4 toilets, a bathtub as big as a small pool and some mirrors where the archbishop could take care of her looks.

In the second floor, there were two bedrooms with beds enough big to allow 10 people to get in it and several closets with a pair of mirrors engraved on its doors, which were filled with all kinds of clothes and styles a lady could imagine. Alongside all of that, there was a hidden room behind of bedrooms, that had an incinerator that worked with air and mana from minerals with mana or mana receptacles that were items that had pure mana stored in them.

In one of those bedrooms, Caroline had been sleeping with what now seemed dried up men, but before were a pair of young men who forced their way in and attacked her. The boys did not know that Caroline was a succubus who could suck their life force, and she wanted to eat a bit, so she had quite the night. So she got up from her bed, wearing a white nightgown that covered her up to her thighs, even though it didn’t leave anything up to imagination, and walked towards one of the closets she had, the one closer to one of the windows of the room as she started getting changed into a blue clubbing dress, blue stockings, and glossy blue platform heels.

And so the attackers became snacks for her, and she was preparing herself for a visit of her friend Lillian but had to clean up the mess she had caused with her dinner of last night, so she dragged the corpses and put them in the incinerator to make sure that they were burned to the point that they turned into ashes.

“Well, I will need to know who is going to go with Lillian. Maybe she has found a good man? She always sought a nice man, but she never had luck, even with her looks. It would be impossible, but if I can get in the church, then everything is possible.” Caroline said as she went back to her bedroom to start her routine for makeup that went from glossy lipstick that humidified her lips to using subtle eyeshadow to attract more looks to her face.

As Caroline was getting ready, Rubedo and Nigredo entered inside the room. This made the archbishop giggle for a moment, and looked at Rubedo with a grin which made the red-haired preacher sigh.

“Sorry about the mess, Rubedo. But you know how hard it is for me to get fed. After all, I am a succubus with the highest purity bloodline. And these men were so bulky, so it left a bit of a trail from the remaining blood. Could you clean this up?” Caroline said as she grinned.

“You could always warn us before, and I would get Albedo to deal with this, lady Grandine. He’s more suitable for this since he is known to be your bodyguard, and I have an image to handle. Nigredo could do that too, she’s unknown by the populace. After all, she’s our information expert.” Rubedo said as he was about to go fetch the cleaning products.

“I will help out! So don’t worry about it! I will sneak in the data to the journalists of an attack to the archbishop. Of course, I would love who is going after Grandine… But it seems that they don’t carry any data with them, and they can’t handle a hungry succubus. Shame on them!” Nigredo said, as she smiled and disappeared for a few seconds, and then reappeared with a bucket and bundle of cleaning products.

“Well, then do that and the cleanup. If you didn’t slack off with teasing Kojuki, we would have the guard under our control.” Rubedo said as she scowled at Nigredo.

“Why me!?” Nigredo asked as she pouted.

“Well, I understand that you want to be mischievous. Your previous self was an introvert who fantasized about that. But Lord Evan created us to serve his children, not to mess around. So orders first and foremost, later the rest. Also, sir Sumeragi is in the city.” Rubedo replied as he massaged his forehead.

“You are losing the life that Lord Evan gave you, because you are too focused on the job, Rubedo. We may just be crafted from the unification of a Necro Slime and the corpse of a godslayer, but you are too focused.” Nigredo retorted as she started cleaning up.

“It’s not like we will age. We are undead, even if we carry the traits of the species of the creatures we were made of. Also, we should be worried about Yusu and the others. May the lord tell us when they arrive, but two of them are too noisy and Yusu… Well, let’s say that best to not let them get near David. Regicide right now is a bad move, especially with the hero around.” Rubedo said as he sat down on the bed.

“I haven’t been slacking that much. I have been lying low. Guess who started snooping around?” Nigredo said as she glared at Rubedo.

“Who, may I know?” Rubedo asked as he looked a bit troubled.

“Robin Arak. Hermes. Another reincarnated godslayer, just like Wukong. So our lord may be around, but we can’t be seen too much. You hid yourself well by hiding your wings, but we can’t hide ourselves so well.” Nigredo replied as she was cleaning the trail.

“Oh, no. That one. Is he going full Vizgard on us? He used to be an ally.” Rubedo said with a worried tone.

“I don’t think so. Dad said he was always into being a journalist. Also, that he was a perv. Not like I don’t dislike pervs. But that opens my appetite, how will the hero taste?” Grandine said as she giggled.

“If Hermes catches us, we are done for. Should we prepare for eliminating him?” Rubedo said as he looked at Nigredo.

“Nope. You know why. He’s the kind to avoid any danger as much as possible, and if we wanted to kill him… We might as well say no. But if we give him enough breadcrumbs… We may get him off our chest.” Nigredo said as she smiled.

This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

“What are you proposing, Nigredo?” Rubedo asked as he squinted his eyes.

“We give him clues to David’s big plan, from different sources, like Kojuki. He’ll get close to Kojuki for sure, he loves going to pubs in the slums since the wildest data can be acquired there. Then, once he finds it all out, we let him start some chaos with his journalist duty and maybe even prepare a bit of a sacrifice for Hermes pervy ways.” Nigredo said as her smile became a smirk.

“Good idea, and we could roll out our PR to make it sound better. Maybe do some PR move to keep the innocent side of the church out of it, while we leave the ones going after lady Grandine to burn. Seems like you haven’t been slacking off at all.” Rubedo said as he smiled and got up.

“Yeah, it’s a wonderful idea, Nigredo. And one in which both me and Rubedo can work together, so perfect.” Grandine said, as she smiled.

“Then, to avoid being linked together due to it, I will start moving out and handling things to set the PR speech while Nigredo handles the cleanup. With your permission, lady Caroline” Rubedo said as he started to walk out of the room.

“Good luck, Rubedo!” Grandine said as she smiled widely.

And so, Grandine started getting everything ready for her friend arrival, putting her archbishop uniform and putting up enough makeup to make herself look more beautiful than usual and ensure that there was not a single remain of what transpired last night with the assistance of Nigredo.

***

In the streets of Crelens, an elf of 1 meter and 70 centimeters with blonde unkempt hair who had snow-white skin, green eyes, a scar on his right cheek below a beauty mark, a monocle on his right eye, and a large teardrop shaped purple earring on his right ear.

This elf was wearing a black necktie, a black vest which had a white shirt below it, black pants with a black belt that had a pouch attached to the left side and behind had a pitch black dagger sheathed with a brown sheath, and a pair of black boots. On his pouch he had a white orb, that acted as a camera, and he was carrying a notebook on his right hand as he was writing on it with a pen in his left hand.

A young girl with shoulder-length black hair, hazel eyes, and with many scars on her arms, wearing only rags and a steel collar, which indicated she was a slave, ran towards the elf while clearly trying to escape from someone. The elf could have avoided the girl, but he was seeing a tall man with a pair of bullhorns and a bull tail that was wearing a brown shirt, brown pants with a slightly loose belt, and black shoes that was running after the girl.

‘I shouldn’t get into this kind of situations, but… Ugh, I am too nice to innocent girls.’ The elf thought to himself as the young girl tripped and fell in front of the elf.

“Hey, elf! Don’t you dare to touch her! She’s my merchandise!” The bull man said as he charged towards the girl.

Once the man with the horns got too close to the girl, he felt how his pants were falling down and the elf had the belt on his hand. The elf chuckled and used the belt as a whip to strike the bull beastkin and make him back down for a bit while the beastkin only could hold the pants.

“I tend to just steal jewels. But you left quite the cutie in front of me. So I will be taking her, since she sure looks innocent. So, how much is her debt?” The elf asked as he smirked.

“You can’t pay her debt, fancy grass eater!” The man said, as he made sure to not allow the pants to fall down. Only to see a bag filled with rocks that released a bright blue light falling in front of him, due to it being thrown by the elf.

“Consider it the payment, and keep the spare change. I don’t need those scrapes.” The elf said as he threw the belt at the man and moved along while grabbing the girl.

The man could only look surprised at the elf, while looking the bag and counting the rocks in it, as it was a bag worth of exactly the debt of the girl. This made the man shiver, feeling like the elf knew everything and he was just played.

“Hey, girl. What’s your name?” The elf asked as he smirked.

“My name… is Ivy…” The girl quietly replied, as she looked the elf in fear.

“Ivy, you have quite the keen eye. Usually I don’t get into this kind of mess, but well, I guess I am a softie at times. Want to be free?” The elf asked Ivy, as he scratched the back of his head.

“But… I owe the debt…” Ivy said as she touched her collar.

“I already paid it. No need to worry about that.” The elf said as he smiled.

“Even then! I can’t just go alone… I will end up as a slave again…” Ivy said as she looked down.

“Hmm, true. Okay, jackass time it is. I decided about that. How about you work for me, Ivy? My name is Robin. Robin Arak. I am a journalist, one who goes against slavery, and I would love to have a cute assistant.” Robin said as he smiled widely.

Ivy pondered the situation, and then smiled back at Robin. She decided to work for Robin, and maybe that way she would escape from slavery, until she saw a group of leather armored thugs walking towards Robin.

“Ey, pointy ears! That girl was ours once the bull was done messing her up!” One of the thugs said as he looked angrily at Robin.

“Well, you were too slow. Now, Ivy is coming with me. As my cute assistant. And if you try to do any thuggish action, I warn that I am armed and that I will enjoy seeing you soiling your armors.” Robin said as he unsheathed his pitch black dagger and smirked.

“Oh, the elf has a fancy dagger. Let’s just beat the snot out of this idiot, with the four of us-” Another of the thugs said as he put on a pair of knuckledusters on his knuckles to attack Robin, but fell to the ground in a split second as Robin moved incredibly fast and stabbed the attacking thug. The thug was electrocuted by the electric discharge that came out of the dagger, and combined with the damaged caused by the dagger, it was lethal.

“Whose next of you two?” Robin said as he threw a pebble quickly to one of the thugs and at that moment dashed to said thug and stabbed him, which ended in the same situation as before.

“W-who are you!?” The farthest thug said as he started running away from the fight.

“Well, good question for a lonely thug.” Robin said as he casually dashed towards the closest thug, and stabbed him too.

“P-Please! Please! Just spare me!” The last thug said as he begged for his life and tried to move away.

“Sorry, but too slow. Had you asked it alongside your pals, maybe you would have lived. But I am not that nice, not anymore. This is what happens when you annoy me. You should have seen it coming” Robin said as he stabbed the last thug in the neck, and then twisting the dagger to ensure a second discharge.

Ivy looked at the entire situation while her face paled, and she looked scared of the thugs. She didn’t fear Robin since he had been nice to her, but she wouldn’t have ever believed that the thugs would go after her.

“Seems like you have a fun story following you. That’s nice. I love scoops like this one.” Robin said as he cleaned the dagger with a handkerchief.

“I don’t know why they are seeking me, and why they wanted me. But the beastkin said something about avoiding that I ended up in the oracle city.” Ivy said, as she looked at the thugs with a worried look.

“Hm. I guess I have to contact an old friend about it.” Robin said, as he started moving, until he stopped.

In the middle of the street, there were several individuals with silver armors that had some golden engraving on the armor that connected in the chest area with the sigil of the church of Zerax that was the golden sword and Rubedo was in front of them.

The guards were wielding greatswords and were waiting for Robin to move, only to see Rubedo walking towards Robin.

“Sir Hermes. A pleasure to see you again.” Rubedo said as he smirked at Robin.

“How did you know I was here? Also, with the church? Been ages since I saw you, but never expected this. Also, don’t use that title.” Robin said as he scowled.

“Yet it’s yours. Also, consider them to cooperate with me due to circumstances. They are here to clean up the mess you made. Also, I am deeply invested by what I heard.” Rubedo said as he walked closer to Robin, who was glaring at Rubedo.

“If you are around, that psycho you call lord is back. He must be scrapping the bottom of the barrel if he is using them. What does he want from his old friend?” Robin asked as he looked at the situation.

“He is not back, at least for now. I am here due to lady Caroline’s orders. To share some information, about slaves. A journalist like you must be invested in something as juicy as the slave business of Elstivia.” Rubedo whispered to Robin as he smiled widely.

“So, what’s that information?” Robin asked, as he whispered back.

“Well, many nobles do work with slavery. Some are in the guard. Also, there’s a long paper trail in which some guards are paid to do very naughty things, like illegal slavery. Of course, I can’t intercede without risking myself to be sent to Asthalos. But you… Well, the church of Zerax won’t trust you, but your godslaying repute follows you. So, quid pro quo?” Rubedo replied as he whispered in Robin’s ear.

“What do I gain?” Robin asked loudly as he moved a bit away from Rubedo, which made Rubedo shrug.

“Well, if you fix our corruption issue… We clean up this, and we give you a token of our appreciation by not saying anything about the slave you have. No one will go after her, and no one will know you have her. You may think it’s not enough, but you picked quite the pickle in this place.” Rubedo said as he waved his left arm and the armored individuals started moving to fetch the corpses.

“Okay, I will follow your game, Red. But if your lord is back, you know he won’t like this mess. And then the evening bell will signal your death.” Robin said, as he walked near Ivy, and he noticed the stain of blood in Rubedo’s vestment.

“I know that you are thinking all sorts of things about me now, Hermes. But be sure of one thing, I haven’t changed at all.” Rubedo said as he moved towards the guards to help them out.

Robin simply took a deep breath, and walked with Ivy in tow towards the nearest alley he could find. Only to stop for a moment, since his mind was going crazy with this entire situation, and he couldn’t understand what was going on.

“Rubedo is here, and he’s planning something. Something big, he doesn’t move if it’s not something that helps Grandine or Evan. But what? What is it? Shit, he has me by my weakness. Either way, if I follow his plan, I will be getting benefits myself.” Robin thought aloud, trying to make his mind connect the dots.

“Well, whatever it is… It clearly seems to be connected to me, even if it’s coincidentally.” Ivy said as she looked at Robin.

“Yeah, that’s for sure. Best option now should be going to a pub, and hear what data the people of the pub has. After that, we could investigate the oracle city. It’ll take weeks to reach there, if we go normally, but I know someone who can speed up the entire process.” Robin said, as he had a plan to find out the truth, even if that would probably be what Rubedo wanted.

“I will follow you, sir. Otherwise, I think I will not be capable of surviving. Also, I am your slave.” Ivy said as she hugged Robin.

Robin simply sighed and made sure to keep Ivy close to him as they both walked down the streets, trying to get to the pub that looked the fanciest and be able to have a drink and acquire information.
