Chapter 39: Living the dream

Chapter 39: Living the dream

June 24th, Age 763.

Six months have passed since Frieza's defeat, and a certain woman on Earth is... unhappy, to say the least.

"I DON'T CARE IF HE'S BUSY TRAINING, IT'S BEEN HALF A YEAR SINCE I LAST SAW HIM, TELL HIM TO COME BACK NOW!" Chi Chi shouts, shaking the house with the sheer fury of her voice.

King Kai cringes, putting his hands over his ears. "It's not that simple! The ship Goku took is on Earth. The only way he can get back is if he finishes his training!"

"THEY DIDN'T SEND THE SHIP BACK FOR HIM?! WHO THE HELL DECIDED THAT IT'D BE A GOOD IDEA TO DITCH MY HUSBAND ON AN ALIEN PLANET?!?!?!"

"It was Raditz." the Kai says, instantly selling out the tall Saiyan. "He told them that it'd be good training."

The furious Earthling immediately dashes through the house, searching for the no-good freeloader who left her husband on another planet...

...After several minutes of searching, she storms into Gohan's room, causing the Half-Saiyan to cringe slightly at the anger he senses from her.

"Gohan? Have you seen your Uncle?" she asks in a calm voice.

"I... uh..." Gohan stutters, hesitating. On one hand, Raditz did save his life on Namek. On the other hand...

"Gohan?" Chi Chi asks again, raising her voice slightly.

His mother is terrifying.

"He said he was going out earlier." Gohan says quickly. "He was flying towards Orange City when I last saw him."

"Did he say when he was going to be back?"

"N-No, but this isn't the first time he's done this, so he'll probably be back in time for dinner!"

"Thanks sweetie!" she says, closing the door behind her as she leaves Gohan's room. "NIMBUS!"

Chi Chi's shout rings throughout the woods as she steps outside of the house, startling the local wildlife. After several seconds of silence, a yellow blur soars through the skies, coming to an abrupt stop in front of the Earthling.

Without any hesitation, the furious woman jumps onto the Flying Nimbus, cracking her knuckles as she lifts a red pole onto her shoulder.

"Take me to Orange City, please."

Half a second later, the cloud disappears, speeding North at speeds far faster than most humans can follow...

Far, far above Orange City, a tall, buff man with one arm floats lazily through the air, staring into the sky with a content smile on his face. He extends his right arm, staring at his outstretched hand with a look of intense concentration for several moments, before a glass cup suddenly materializes in his hand. Soon after, half a dozen cubes of ice fill the glass, quickly followed by a dark liquid. Chuckling softly to himself, he raises the glass to his mouth, taking a sip of the ice-cold soda he just created.

He smacks his lips together with a satisfied sigh, enjoying the drink as he soars through the air.

'Man... this is the life.' he thinks, glancing at the light-blue screen in front of him with a grin.

"...I just want to let you know, what's about to happen to you is deserved." King Kai says, staring at the lazy Saiyan with a twisted sense of satisfaction.

"Hmm? What do you mean?" Raditz asks, slightly confused.

"You'll see."

The Kai goes silent, causing the tall man to cock an eyebrow.

"King Kai? What do you mean? Is it the military again? I could've sworn they gave up after the last time they tried to stop me from flying above their cities."

"..."

"King Kai?"

"..."

"Fine, fine, don't tell me. How is the training on Planet Yardrat going? Are those three making progress yet?"

"You ask me this every time we talk. Honestly, you should fly there and check it out yourself."

Raditz scoffs. "And get roped into weeks of intense training by Kakarot? No thanks. I'm more than powerful enough to take on most enemies. I-- one second."

The Saiyan cuts himself off, pointing his finger at a small black dot in the distance. A small beam of energy explodes from the tip of his finger, disintegrating the target on impact.

"As I was saying, I don't need even more intense training. The non-stop gravity training I did on the way to Namek was more than enough for me to get sick of it."

"Dr. Gero is still spying on you, huh?" King Kai asks with a chuckle.

"Of course he is. He's been sending his robots after me ever since I got back from Namek. I don't know why he keeps trying, it's not like I've actually been doing anything worth looking at."

"Other than when you visit Capsule Corp." the blue Kai teases. "Got your eye on a certain someone?"

Raditz, used to this after half a year, rolls his eyes. "I'm not interested in Bulma, despite her best attempts. You know that the only reason I go there is to train in peace. Dr. Gero knows better than to send any tech near Capsule Corp, and it's a huge relief to not be on the lookout for his robots."

"If you're that tired of him spying on you, then why don't you just track him down and tell him to stop? Actually, why are you so bothered by him spying on you in the first place? He was a scientist in the Red Ribbon Army, and Goku was able to deal with them when he was a kid. It's not like you'll be in any danger from what he does see."

"..." the Saiyan grimaces at the question.

'It's not like I can tell him that Gero will create a few ass-kicking cyborgs in the future, or that the System keeps stopping me every time I think of teaching that old bastard a lesson...' Raditz thinks sourly.

"...I just have a bad feeling about him watching me. Not enough for me to put in the effort to track him down, mind you, but enough for me to destroy his robots when I see them." he lies, before hastily changing the subject. "Enough about that. I believe you still haven't answered my first question. How is Kakarot, Piccolo, and Vegeta's training coming along? Will they be back soon? Chi Chi is getting... annoyed at how long Kakarot is taking. Honestly, I'm lucky she doesn't know that it was my idea to leave him there."

"..." King Kai is silent, putting his hands over his mouth to muffle his laughter.

"...That bad, huh?" Raditz says solemnly, misunderstanding the reason for King Kai's silence.

"No-- hehe-- no, Goku is pretty close to mastering the Instant Transmission, and the other two have picked up some tricks that'll come in handy. You're right about Chi Chi though... hehehehe." King Kai says, trying his hardest to hold his laughter in.

"That's a relief. The cooking is nice, and having a place to stay is better than the alternative, but she really needs to learn to relax. With how much she pushes him to study, I'm pretty sure that Gohan is more overworked than Saiyans of the same age."

"..." the Kai falls silent, as if lost in thought.

"Well, if that's all, I'll get back to relaxing."

Raditz's drink refills, but before he can enjoy the ice-cold beverage, the blue Kai's voice appears in his head yet again.

"You know, most people would kill for an opportunity like this." he says with a hint of disapproval in his tone.

"Opportunity? What opportunity?" the tall Saiyan asks in a bored tone, half-listening to King Kai.

"...The chance to speak with a Kai. More specifically, the chance to speak with a Kai who is willing to train you."

"I'm doing good enough training on my own. Your advice helps when you actually decide to give it, but it isn't something I'd kill over."

"The majority of your techniques are derived from what us Kai taught mortals thousands of years ago. As a matter of fact, your fighting style is eerily similar to what mine was when I was younger. If you actually put in effort into your training, you'd benefit far more than Goku did when he was in otherworld."

"I do put in effort in my training!" Raditz objects.

"But not as much as Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo." the blue man counters. "You only spend 2-3 hours a day training, and you're falling behind the others pretty quickly. You should know this already, but Vegeta is very eager for a rematch after your arm has regrown, and he's spent all of his time training to counter faster opponents. Your Kasokudo won't save you. You need to get stronger."

"He still wants to fight me? With how much you love to gossip, I thought that you'd surely tell Kakarot, Vegeta, and Piccolo that I've been slacking on my training."

"No, I think it's better for them to find out for themselves."

"Then I won't focus on being faster than Vegeta." he says with a shrug. "Even though I've spent most of my time relaxing, I have been training my Ki techniques at the same time. I'll be miles ahead of him in Ki control and maneuvering in the air. I'll be able to outlast or out blast him pretty easily."

"If you're that confident, then I suppose there's nothing I can do but wait. You'll regret not training harder when he beats you half to death."

"You've been unusually talkative today." Raditz says, slightly annoyed. "Is it really that boring on your planet?"

"Hehehe... no, that's not it. I just needed to keep you distracted."

"Distracted? What--"

Raditz is suddenly cut off as a shrill, furious voice reaches his ears.

"YOU LEFT MY HUSBAND ON AN ALIEN PLANET?!?!?! WITH NO WAY TO GET HOME BEFORE HE FINISHES TRAINING?!?!?!??!?!"

His head snaps upwards in surprise, causing his eyes to widen as he sees the source of the yelling.

Goku's wife speeds towards him with both feet firmly planted on a small, yellow cloud. In her hands is a short, red pole. Suddenly, the pole expands at a rapid pace, jabbing towards Raditz.

"..."

'Should I just dodge it or...? I mean, it's not like it'll actually hurt, so I guess there's no harm in letting it hit me? Maybe that'll calm her down some?' he thinks, staring at the Power Pole 'speeding' towards him.

"GO FIND A NEW PLACE TO STAY! IF I CATCH YOU AROUND MY HOUSE AGAIN, I SWEAR I'LL TAKE YOUR OTHER ARM!" Chi Chi shouts, raining down blows upon the tall Saiyan.

Raditz, for his part, sighs softly upon hearing her words.

'Yeesh. She reminds me of my parents...'

"Hahahahahaha!"

Laughter suddenly erupts from the inside of his head, causing a small scowl to appear on the Saiyan's face.

"You told her." he says sourly.

"I did." King Kai confirms.

Raditz rolls his eyes, staring into the sky in boredom as he waits for the Earthling to tire herself out.

...

...

...

After almost an hour of screaming, beating, and cursing, Chi Chi finally flies away from the one-armed man. Ignoring the blue Kai who keeps speaking in his head, he throws the glass he created into the air, blasting it with a small ball of Ki to disintegrate it.

With his mood ruined, Raditz takes off towards Capsule Corp, intending to use their training facilities to take his mind off of the fact that he's now homeless.

Ding!

Quest Complete!

Raditz spares a single glance towards the blue screen in front of him, causing his eyes to widen in alarm as he sees the quest that was just completed. Without any hesitation, he speeds up as fast as he can, arriving at Capsule Corp in an instant...
