Chapter 20: A change in scenery

Chapter 20: A change in scenery

Raditz groans as he stretches his limbs. To his surprise, none of his muscles atrophied, even after being bedridden for a month. If anything, he seems slightly more muscular than he was before the fight with Vegeta.

'Huh, Saiyan biology sure is weird... or maybe the Senzu Beans did that?' he muses, before his head snaps to the door in surprise.

'What's that energy I sense..? It can't be Yajirobe, he's in the room with me, and it feels weaker than Master Roshi should be... oh, wait! It has to be--'

The door flies open, and an extremely angry woman barges into the room. She immediately dashes towards the Saiyans and, to Raditz's surprise, tackles Goku in a flying hug.

"Dammit Goku, I was so worried! First you died, then Piccolo took Gohan, and then when you came back, you got beaten half to death! I thought you were going to die again, you wouldn't wake up! Don't ever do something like that again! You..."

As Goku is scolded by his wife, Raditz lets out a small chuckle.

'Knowing Chi Chi, I would've expected her to hit him. I guess Kakarot should count his blessings.'

Hearing him chuckle, the Earthling woman immediately releases Goku from her grasp and rushes towards Raditz...

Slap.

A sharp smacking sound rings throughout the room as Chi Chi slaps Raditz across the face. She begins screeching at Raditz, who is so shocked that it takes several seconds for him to register her words.

"AND WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT?! IT'S YOUR FAULT THAT THIS HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE! IF YOU HADN'T COME HERE, THEN GOKU NEVER WOULD'VE DIED! GOKU AND GOHAN'S FRIENDS WOULDN'T HAVE DIED! I SWEAR, IF IT WASN'T FOR GOHAN AND KRILLIN HOLDING ME BACK THE LAST TIME I WAS HERE, THEN I WOULD'VE..."

Raditz winces as Chi Chi describes a very graphic, bloody scene. He glances at Goku, silently pleading for the younger Saiyan to do something.

Goku shrugs with a small smile on his face as he watches his wife, causing Raditz to scowl at his cowardly brother while Yajirobe quietly exits the room.

...

...

Almost ten minutes passed before she was stopped. Several doctors tried to drag her out of the room, telling her that she was disturbing the other patients. With a murderous fury in her eyes, she eventually leaves the two brothers alone. Once she does, Goku turned towards the taller Saiyan.

"You know, I think she likes you!"

"Very funny, Kakarot. I'm astonished by the sheer humor of that joke." Raditz deadpans.

"No no, I'm serious!" Goku replies. "You should've seen what she did to one of the nurses here! Krillin told me about it with telepathy before he left for Namek. Apparently, she overheard one of the nurses gossiping about me. Krillin wouldn't tell me exactly what the nurse said, but Chi Chi was furious. The nurse should still be in one of the other hospital rooms."

"As... as a patient?!"

"Mhm! You got off lucky. She didn't even go for your eyes."

As Goku says that, Raditz suddenly remembers something. With obvious excitement on his face, he begins to take the bandages off of his eye, eventually revealing...

A fully healed eye right where he was previously blinded. He looks at the room around him in joy, happy to have both of his eyes back.

'Good to know that Senzu Beans can restore eyes.' he thinks with a grin.

"So what's your plan now?" Goku asks. "Are you going with me to Namek or...?"

"Or what? Stay here on an unfamiliar planet? I have nothing other than the clothes on my back, and I don't have anywhere to stay. Of course I'll go with you."

Goku sighs in relief. "Good. Dr. Briefs should be finished with his ship by now. We should be able to leave by tomorrow, at the latest."

"There's just one problem, Kakarot..."

"Oh?"

Raditz coughs in embarrassment. "My armor was destroyed in the fight against Vegeta. Other than these hospital robes, I... uh... don't have any clothes to wear."

"I didn't even think about that!" Goku says. "Well... I don't think any of my clothes will fit you. I'll ask Dr. Briefs and see if he has anything you can wear."

Far away, in the deep depths of space, a Saiyan Prince silently seethes in his space pod, not allowing it to put him in a coma out of paranoia.

'How could I, the Prince of all Saiyans, lose to two low-class wretches?! Even after I became the mighty Oozaru, I still failed to kill them! I lost to Raditz of all people! How could that weakling have become so fast?! Did he somehow convince Burter to train him?! I should've killed him while I had the chance! I should've--'

"Argh, dammit!"

Vegeta suddenly curses as a spike of pain shoots through him. He stares at his newly healed hand in displeasure.

'And those Earthlings... how pathetic. To think that I would lose a hand to weaklings from an unknown, backwater planet... the thought sickens me. If it wasn't for my arrogance, I would've crushed them like the bugs they are. I had them beat several times, but my pride... no. No, I'm not to blame! I am Prince Vegeta. I have a right to be arrogant. I deserve to be prideful! No, it isn't my fault that I was injured so greatly. It was his fault. That traitorous piece of scum, Raditz. If he had just done his duty as a Saiyan warrior and wiped out those Earthlings, then Nappa wouldn't have had to kill the Namekian. I... I would've been immortal by now! If it wasn't for that low-class bastard, then I'd be on my way to overthrowing Frieza!'

Vegeta's hands clench in anger, his rage overpowering any pain he feels.

'Yes. It's all his fault. Him and that brother of his, Kakarot. I will make them suffer once I become immortal. I will make them regret their actions! First, I'll cripple Raditz's legs-- both of them this time. And then, when he can't flee, I'll...'

As the Saiyan Prince distracts himself with thoughts of revenge during his journey to Namek, the Earthlings get closer and closer to their destination...

Raditz looks around the mostly-empty room he finds himself in, eyeing the inside of Dr. Briefs's ship. The main room that captures his attention is the training room, which is circular, with a large, complicated machine in the center. Other than the gravity machine and ship controls, the floor is completely devoid of any obstacles, leaving the area clean and ready for use. As he looks around, the Earthling's words fill his ears.

"...And this panel holds the ship's controls. They're based off of the Saiyan spaceships, so it should be easy enough for you to use. We've got a fully stocked fridge in the bedroom, with state of the art cleaning systems to ensure that no garbage interferes with your training. The gravity machine can go up to 100 times Earth's normal gravity, but I cannot stress how bad of an idea it would be to max it out. According to my calculations, 50 times Earth's normal gravity should be the limit you can reach before you arrive at Namek. I will repeat, do not use 100 times gravity. It will kill you."

"Hey, old man, I don't recognize that button. What's it do?" Raditz asks, gesturing towards a small, red button. Unlike most of the ship's controls, which closely resemble the controls on Raditz's space pod, the button is unfamiliar to him.

"Oh, that? Well... it's a muffin dispenser. If you press it, a chocolate chip muffin will pop out from a panel below." the Earthlings mutters, seeming a little ashamed of himself.

"A muffin dispenser? Why did you add that?"

"Well... Mr. Popo visited when I was installing the cappuccino machine, and he insisted that I repurpose it into a muffin making machine. I'm not sure why he asked me to make it, but... I couldn't refuse him."

"I'll have to thank him later! This sounds great!" Goku says in excitement.

Raditz nods his head sagely, agreeing with the shorter man.

"Saiyans sure are something..." Dr. Briefs says, shaking his head.

"Well, that's all I have to say. You should have a good idea of how to use the ship and what features it has. It also comes equipped with a long-range communications system. You should be able to contact me if you need anything. Oh, and before I forget..."

He hands Raditz a small capsule.

"I didn't have enough time to repair your armor, although it is fascinating to study. The material alone is far superior to anything Earth has to offer, and the design! Why, it..."

The excited scientist continues rambling about Raditz's armor, how well made it is, and the implications that introducing the material to Earth can have. After almost a minute, he catches himself.

"Oh look at me, I'm rambling. As I was saying, I couldn't fix your armor, and I haven't been able to replicate the materials in it, so I settled for the next best thing. Inside the capsule, there are a few dozen martial arts outfits, like what Goku and the others wear. I didn't have enough time to add weighted training clothes, but the gravity machine should take care of that."

"They're all the same color as Kakarot's? Orange?"

"Kakarot? Who is-- oh, you mean Goku. Well yes, they're all orange."

"Pity... well, thank you for the clothing, Earthling."

"You're welcome. Now if that's all, then I'll go. You two can leave for Namek at anytime."

As the elderly Earthling leaves, Raditz takes the capsule and heads towards the ship's bathroom.

"I'm going to go get changed. Start the ship, it should already have the coordinates to Namek programmed in.

Goku nods as he presses the muffin button, grabbing a quick snack before he starts their journey to Namek.

...

Hours later, the two Saiyans stand across from each other, waiting for one of them to make the first move...

Raditz, now clad in an orange martial arts gi, grows tired of waiting, and sends a light jab towards the shorter man. He backs up while attacking, utilizing his longer reach to keep Goku from getting closer. Goku easily slaps the strike away, slowly inching closer to the taller warrior. Raditz continues to back up, launching a flurry of strikes towards his brother. The martial artist tilts out of the way, avoiding blow after blow with practiced ease. Out of nowhere, Raditz's body lowers to the ground, his leg shooting out in an attempt to sweep Goku's legs. Goku, of course, easily jumps over the attack, finally getting within melee range of Raditz. At speeds almost too fast for Raditz's eyes to see, the younger Saiyan's hands lash out. Unlike Goku, Raditz is unable to dodge this onslaught, opting to instead block his sparring partner's punches. Despite feeling tempted to increase his speed with the Kasokudo, Raditz resists, knowing that if he used that, it may cause Goku to use the Kaioken.

"You're not bad, but you're a little too predictable, and you keep your guard too close to your body." Goku says, hammering an uppercut into Raditz's stomach. As the taller man doubles over, Goku slips behind him, kicking the back of Raditz's knee. Before Raditz can faceplant on the floor, Goku grabs the back of his orange gi, hoisting the Saiyan to his feet.

"Your moves are refined and smooth, but still a little too slow. You still aren't used to using them, are you?" he asks.

"No." Raditz admits. "But that's part of the reason we're doing this, right?"

"Yep! King Kai said that he was watching your fight against Vegeta. According to him, your Ki techniques are pretty good, but your Ki control needs work, and your martial arts skills are too slow and clumsy."

"I can improve my Ki control on my own, but we both know you're a better martial artist. How long do you think it'll take for me to reach your level?"

"It's hard to say. You've got a good grasp on the techniques, you just need them to become instinctual to you."

"I see... well then, how about we turn the gravity up for the next session?"

"Fifteen times Earth's gravity sound good?"

Raditz grins.

"It should suffice for a warm-up."
