Chapter 10: Determination

Chapter 10: Determination

On top of his hospital bed Oswald was meditating, focusing on controlling his Mana Flow. He started to use his Mana to strengthen his body. He drew out the most he could, but the pain started to become unbearable. When he let his Mana Flow naturally, Oswald felt more sore than before and was sweating. The control he had was imperfect, yet he had hope of becoming more proficient as when he fought Two he was able to momentarily copy Jack’s Mana Flow when using healing magic and he was able to heal himself for a bit. Oswald knew that soon he would be able to use elemental magic by controlling his Mana Flow, something others seemed to do unconsciously when casting any kind of magic. Oswald began to wonder what the connection between Mana and what everyone called Magical Energy was, for him it seemed they were the same because he could copy basic buff and minor healing by mimicking the Mana Flow of others that he was able to observe. He forgot since when he was able to observe the Mana Flow of other’s, but it seemed he was the only one to be able to do it. Oswald went back to trying to mimic Hannah’s Mana Flow when she was using Wind Magic. As hard as he concentrated he couldn’t produce any results. Just as he was about to give up he decided to mimic the Mana Flow of fire magic he had seen and with all his might and energy Oswald tried to make fire. Before exhausting his energy Oswald was able to produce a tiny flame for a brief moment.

I did it. Oswald’s thoughts were filled with excitement as he laid down in the bed. Damn, I have no more energy. At least I managed to replicate elemental magic for a brief moment. I should be getting discharged tomorrow. Maybe I can go on a date with Hannah tomorrow. What do I do now that I have a girlfriend? I guess I will try my best just like with figuring out this Mana Flow without guidance. I should take a quick nap.

Oswald drifted asleep and two hours later during the evening his dad, mom, and sister came into his room. They saw that Oswald was fast asleep.

“He needs his rest to recover.” Joseph said. “Is the doctor coming soon?”

“She said she will be here at 7:30.” Liliana said as she checked the time in her silver watch. “It’s 7:20 right now.”

“Mom, Dad. Oz is waking up.” Carmen said as she noticed Oswald was slowly opening his eyes.”

“Oh! You all are here.” Oswald said as he saw his family. “I am hungry now.”

“I’ll have one of my assistants get something for you, Son.” Joseph said as he stroked Oswald’s head. “What do you want?”

“I am feeling some carne asada green salsa enchiladas and horchata.” Oswald responded with a smile.

“Liliana, Carmen, do you want something?” Joseph asked.

“I am fine, Darling.” Liliana said.

“I want the same as Oz, Daddy.” Carmen responded.

“Let me text, Aria.” Joseph texted his assistant, Aria, to bring the food. “She is on her way.”

As they were chatting, Doctor Max, a middle aged man,. arrived at 7:30 in the room. As he spotted Joseph, Doctor Max tried to show the most respect he had ever done in his life.

“Good evening, Duke and Duchess Deus.” Doctor Max greeted. “We had the best healing magic users treat Oswald’s broken bones, but as you can see he still can't move much because of the soreness he still feels.”

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

“Doctor, do you know why Oswald still feels like this even though he was treated two days ago?” Liliana asked.

“Yes, Duchess. During his fight with Two, your son was beaten badly and we found signs he pushed his body beyond his limits.” Doctor Max responded. “Although, he was sleeping the whole time and just woke up this morning, he hasn’t fully recovered due to his recklessness with his body.”

Damn, I hope they don’t discover my Mana Flow control. Oswald’s thoughts were full of keeping up his identity as the only human with no Magical Powers. No one should be able as no one else so far seems to know about Mana.

“Thanks for taking care of my son.” Joseph said. “I am glad Duchess Rosemary Deus built this hospital 500 years ago. It even bears her name.”

“Rosemary Hospital has helped so many people, Duke.” Doctor Max said. “The Deus family is always helping society. We are so grateful for what your family has done over the years, Duke. Oswald will be discharged tomorrow. I have sent all the reports to the email on file. I’ll be taking my leave now. If there are any questions do not hesitate to call me. Good evening!”

Doctor Max exited the room while checking his clipboard. After a few minutes a brunette woman came into the room with a bag that gave a delicious scent of enchiladas. She also held two plastic clear cups filled with horchata.

“Mission accomplished, Sir.” Aria said as she handed the drink and the bag of food to Joseph. “I’ll be around the area on standby.”

“Thanks Aria!” Oswald and Carmen said as Aria exited the room.

“Here you go, you two.” Joseph handed Oswald and Carmen their food and drinks. He watched with a smile as his kids ate their food. He held Liliana’s hand and she looked at him with a smile. Joseph felt relieved seeing Oswald. After hearing Oswald had fought one of the Lunarian Rankers and got injured he was restless waiting for him to wake up. Now that he could see his son eating, Joseph felt he could put his mind at ease for the moment. He then shifted his gaze towards Carmen. He started to think how he didn't want her to become the head of the Deus family. Although Carmen was a candidate for the Deus family head, he wished his nephew Leon Deus would be chosen as the next head. Joseph knew the difficulties of being the family head and he believed Leon was the most qualified to be the next family head. Joseph worries how Oswald will navigate the world once he becomes an adult as Oswald is the only human with no Magical Powers or Magical Energy. Joseph recalls the harsh words Albert said about Oswald during the meeting, he knows most of the Deus family discriminate against Oswald and he doesn’t know how to solve this issue. “Oswald, please don’t do something reckless like this anymore. You don’t have to burden yourself. I will be the one to deal with the Lunarian Rankers. I promise you I will make them pay for killing your Grandmother, my Mother.”

“Then, I will leave it to you, Dad.” Oswald said as he looked into Joseph’s eyes. “I’ll focus on getting my Adventurer’s License for now. After getting my license Hannah, Amy, Jack and I will explore the low rank dungeons while we are still in high school.”

“Are you still planning on attending Leon University?” Liliana asked.

“Yes, I might not have gone to Rosemary High School. But I will attend the university Duke Leon Dues built 500 years ago.” Oswald responded.

“I will make sure you have a spot.” Joseph said. “I know you are participating in our family tournament. Just be careful and if you think you’ll get hurt in a fight just forfeit the match.”

“Don’t worry, Dad.” Oswald said. “I know my limits.”

“Being in here doesn’t help your case, my dear.” Liliana said.

“Yeah, Mom is right.” Carmen added.

“Fine, I’ll be more careful when choosing to fight.” Oswald said. “I am confident in my close combat skills. I can beat many of them even if they use magic against me.”

“Then just be careful. Remember, we only care about your safety and wellbeing.” Joseph said. “Your Mom and I want the best for you and Carmen. We love you two the most in the world.”

I’m sorry, Dad. But I will continue this path that will put me in dangerous situations. Oswald’s thoughts were focused on his plans for the future. I won’t stay still and wait for others to achieve what I want. I’ll become stronger and stop the Lunarian Rankers.
