Chapter 18: Kyle, The Caretaker?

Chapter 18: Kyle, The Caretaker?

“Beep.  Beep.  Beep,” went the alarm in Kyle’s room the next morning as he tried to ignore it.  Pulling the pillow over his head didn’t tune the incessant beeping out, and after a few mournful moments of trying, he finally grudgingly got up and walked across the room to his dresser and turned it off.

Last night had been a complete bust for him in game again.  He’d only managed to kill a handful of creatures, and had used up all of his “Sturdy Green Leaf” without even getting a single point in any crafting skill.  He was still about halfway from his first level, and probably had another eighty tries or so to go before he picked up a crafting skill at all!  The only good news, as far as he could tell, was that his character had managed to improve Identify up to level 5 finally!  Each level was taking longer and longer to acquire, but it was simply something to do every ten seconds while sitting and slowly trying to drill holes in a leaf, before having it disappear in a failed crafting attempt when he tried to stitch his hair through it.

All in all, it was a very frustrating evening in the game, but Kyle was determined not to let it get him down.  Only twenty-eight more days of this, and then he could create a new character!  It was silly to be playing a game where you ran around in nothing more than a cloak!  (And kind of cold too sometimes!)

Getting dressed, Kyle couldn’t help but smile lightly to himself.  At least it was Friday now, and he could devote himself to playing for the whole weekend.  Even with his pitiful rate of progress, he was certain that he’d be able to level up and finally earn the basic crafting skill by Monday.  If he was going to restart in a month, he needed to do his best to get every skill and point that he could for this character; it’d make his next character even better through the “legacy system”.  No one knew exactly how the legacy system worked yet, but the game promised that it’d help carry over some things from one “life” to the next, and Kyle figured the more he grew with this character, the better the next one would be.

Heck, if nothing else, at least it helped him to understand more about the system and rules of the game which he was playing!

Finally grabbing his book bag, Kyle rushed down the steps and looked around briefly for his mother.  Apparently she’d been called into work early and was already gone once again this morning.  Shrugging slightly to himself, he grabbed his house keys from the ashtray near the door and headed out and over to the neighbor’s once again.

Letting himself in through the kitchen door, Kyle noticed that no one was in the kitchen and cooking anything yet.  Quietly, so  as to not wake Franklin or Fanny if they were still asleep, Kyle tiptoed into the living room to see if anyone was moving around yet.  Fanny was sitting cross-legged in the floor, dressed in nothing more than a lacy pair of black panties and bra, scribbling furiously on a piece of paper laid across the coffee table.  Lose papers were scattered all around, and a black dress and pair of beige hose hung over the back of the couch.

Laughing lightly to himself, Kyle went over and picked up the dress from the couch and unzipped the back of it.  “Hey Fran.  Franny.  Franster!  YooHoo!!” He tried to get her attention a few different times and then just sighed and walked over and tapped Fanny on the head a few times.  She looked back after a few taps, curiosity written across her face.  Taking advantage of the opportunity, Kyle slid the dress over her head with the zipper part turned in his direction.

“Arms in,” he told her while laughing.  Fanny wrinkled her nose a few times and then wiggled her arms up and through the holes for them.  Soon she was bent back over and scribbling back at her writing like nothing had happened, while Kyle wiggled and pulled the dress down around her back better and then zipped it up for her.  Seeing the hose still on the couch, he simply waded those up and carried them up the steps with them and tossed them into the laundry basket at the end of the hall.  She was too wrapped up in her work; chances are she wouldn’t finish up in time to put them on anyway.  Today would just be one of those days she did without.

Heading into Sera’s room, Kyle was shocked to see an enormous V-RIG system set up over in the corner under her window.  Three helmets lay piled neatly at the far wall, and one was laid near the bed where Sera was curled up tightly under the covers.  Quietly, Kyle tiptoed around the bed and knelt down to read the information on the side of the V-RIG system box.  “CustomX99 Elite” was the name on it, but Kyle didn’t know enough about the different systems to know much about it.   It probably wasn’t much different than his, he thought with a shrug.

“Hey Sera, time to get up,” he told her lightly.  Sera didn’t respond at all, and Kyle leaned up and gently pulled the hair away from her face and simply watched her covers rise up and down slightly as she breathed peacefully for a few moments.  This was one of his favorite parts of the day, if he was honest with himself.  After several long moments of indulging himself in watching her angelic face, Kyle gentle kissed two of his fingers and then placed them on the top of her forehead.

“Hey Sera, time to get up,” he repeated lightly.  When she didn’t respond again, he leaned and shook her lightly so she’d loosen her grip on the covers.  Once she’d let go, Kyle gave the blanket a sudden yank and pulled it off of her in one hard yank.  Sera rolled with the blankets and tumbled out into the floor with a slight crash this morning!

“Save me some!” She muttered sleepily while half rising up on her knees and rubbing her eyes.  Kyle wanted to rub his eyes too!  This morning Sera was sleeping in nothing more than a single white shirt, unbuttoned, and hanging limply on either side of her.  He could see everything this morning!  From her wavy, red, bed-head hair, to the luscious white mounds with cherry red tips above her waist, to the slightly curly red patch below it.  Kyle’s eyes bulged as Sera unabashedly stretched and then sleepily got up and flopped back down on the bed and pulled her arms up over her head to block out the light.

“Jussst a few'm mimmets,” she muttered while Kyle stared at her pearly white butt cheeks.  With her arms up as they were, the shirt was pulled so he had a perfect view of her curvy goodness.

Resisting temptation to reach out and smack her once or twice, Kyle went over and rummaged through Sera’s dresser drawers.  He took a few moments to play around with the different pairs of underwear that she owned, and then finally picked out a lacy pair of white panties which tied at the hips, and a frilly white bra to go with them.  It was cold outside this morning, so he took time to pick out a pair of tan yoga-pants, before getting one of her school shirts and skirts for her.

After finally digging through her sock drawer and getting a nice pair of white knee high socks, Kyle finally walked over and sat the pile of clothes on the edge of the bed.  For a few more moments, he enjoyed staring at Sera’s pale body, and then with a flash of bravery he slid her panties up over her ankles and wiggled them up her legs.  Getting to her hips, he had to lift her lightly, and Sera muttered, “Save me some”, in protest.  Kyle couldn’t help but laugh lightly to himself – like mother, like daughter!

“Save me some,” had become a family joke thanks to Fanny muttering it a few too many times while wrapped up in her work.  In this household, “Save me some” could mean anything from “sure” to “never” to “I’m hungry” to “Goodnight”.  It was now a general catchphrase used at all the wrong times.  If someone actually said it at a time when it almost made sense to say it, Kyle would think they were sick!

Finally getting her panties up and in place – or close enough – Kyle repeated the same process with the yoga pants.  Sometimes he felt like he was as much caretaker as neighbor for the dang women in this family – especially in the mornings!  Lifting Sera’s legs, Kyle flopped down on the bed and laid them in his lap so he could put her socks on her.  No one at school would ever believe that he did such things to Seraphine, but Kyle didn’t care.  They could believe, or not believe, whatever they wanted to about their relationship.

The truth was, Kyle was conflicted about his feelings were Sera anyway.  On one hand, she was a beautiful woman, and he was a young teenage male.  He had to admit that he was extremely attracted to her, and from time to time that bothered him.  On days like this, he felt kind of like a big brother helping his little sister get ready for school, but at the same time he felt an uncomfortable warmth in his groin that told him he wanted to be – and do – more than that.  His biggest two problems were the fact that he didn’t want to do anything to ruin their “almost sibling” relationship, and that he honestly believed that Sera could never see his as anything more than an “almost sibling”.

At school, they almost never spent any time together.  Sera had her own set of friends; Kyle had his; and the two groups never intermingled.  After school, she often went to work at the restaurant and he couldn’t spend any time with her then.  Over the last few years, they had drifted quite apart and it was really only these cold winter mornings when he got a ride to school that they even spent a few moments together.  To be honest, Kyle missed the time which they used to spend together, but it couldn’t be helped.  Sera took the advanced classes, and he took the easiest ones he could so he’d have more free time to goof off.  They didn’t even have homework assignments together anymore since they’d started high school.

Really, it was quite an odd paradox for Kyle.  He felt as if there was an endless gap between them anymore, but yet at the same time her felt close enough to help her get dressed in the mornings.  To be honest, he wasn’t certain where he fit into things with Sera anymore.  Friend?  Brother?  Bother?  Moocher?  Caretaker?

Shaking his head to clear it, he finally lifted her legs again once he’d gotten both her socks on and up, and he eased himself up from the bed.  Gently, he reached down and tugged on her shirt and wiggled it, trying to get it off her.  Sera was limp and slightly snoring as he finally got one arm out and then the other.

“Now, how the hell do I get this thing on?”  Kyle asked himself while staring at her bra.

He was half tempted to just dress her without it, but he just couldn’t do her like that.  At the same time though, he didn’t think there was any way he could get it on her either, so he just gave up on the idea.  Instead, Kyle hunted around until he found her hairbrush.  Sitting on the edge of the bed beside her, Kyle slowly brushed out her hair while smiling to himself.  Sera had soft, silky hair that always smelled slightly like cherry blossoms, and he enjoyed combing it.

After several minutes indulging himself in combing out her hair, Kyle eased up and sat her skirt, bra, and top together at the foot of the bed.  Grinning widely, he yelled, “Save me some!”, and smacked Sera firmly across the bottom of her butt with the flat of his hand.

Jerking half-upright in the bed, Sera nodded sleepily and said, “Sure.  Yeah.  Saving some!”  Laughing, Kyle smacked her tush one more time for good measure and reminded her, “Time for school.  You’ve slept as long as possible.  Get up, and I’ll see you downstairs.” Stretching and yawning, Sera nodded lightly and Kyle let his eyes bask in the glory of her morning figure before turning and going out of the room and downstairs.

Grinning happily to himself, Kyle went into the kitchen and started digging in the fridge for the milk.  Much to his disappointment, there wasn’t any this morning.  “Hey Franklin,” he yelled.  “Fanny’s too busy to cook, and there’s no milk for cereal.  Sera’s going to need some money for breakfast at school today.”  Of course, he was going to have to eat at school as well, or else skip breakfast, but Kyle didn’t bother to mention that fact.

“I’ll git ‘er some! ‘Till be aright!”, came back the gruff voice from the downstairs bathroom.

Nodding to himself, Kyle went outside and started the SUV so it’d be warm for everyone this morning.  Honestly, he really did feel like a caretaker for them sometimes!  Talk about a hopeless family!

Waiting in the car, it was several minutes later when Sera came out of the house, opened the door, and climbed into the middle of the back seat.  Kyle finally got up, walked around the vehicle and sat down beside her before closing the door.  Sleepily Sera laid her head over on his neck and closed her eyes.  Much to Kyle’s surprise, he could see that her shirt was buttoned wrong, with at least two buttons being out of place!  Just how tired was she this morning!  Sighing deeply, Kyle reached over and undid the bottom half of the buttons on Sera’s shirt and then fastened them properly.

He really was nothing more than a caretaker for this hopeless family!  But, as Sera gently laid her head back over on his shoulder and the gentle smell of cherries wafted lightly to his nose, Kyle decided that that might not be such a bad thing to be, honestly.  Grinning to himself, he laid his head over against Sera’s and closed his eyes while waiting on Franklin to get Fanny together and rustle her out the door.

This morning wasn’t so bad, either, in his opinion.
