Chapter 5 - A Bad Day

Eight years had passed since Kristine and Christopher were reborn, and they were enjoying their new life. Kristine had grown out her golden hair and it cascaded over her shoulders like a golden waterfall. Her skin was flawless and smooth, and she had a natural glow that drew attention wherever she went.

On the other hand, Christopher was starting to look more athletic. He had grown into a handsome young boy with a muscular frame despite never lifting a single dumbbell in his life. His skins was flawless, just like his twin sister, thanks the system.

Their new parents had a huge mansion with a big lawn in the bustling town of Brookville, New York. They were also very generous with their love and affection for their two children. Even their grandparents had visited several times, showering them with presents and compliments about their appearance.

The Love Points they had gained over the past eight years had helped them gain many skill books from the system, and even the servants were starting to notice the peculiarities of the young master and miss.

"Did you hear about young miss’ piano recital yesterday?" Ms. Smith, the head maid who looked after them, said in amazement. "Her talent is truly astounding. It's hard to believe she's only eight years old."

The two younger maids smiled proudly as they listened to Mrs. Smith's compliment.

"It's too bad the young master Christopher isn't as musically talented as the young miss," Mrs. Smith continued, using his proper name. "He doesn't seem to know how to sing or dance either."

"But I heard his tutor say he's reading at a college level already!" one of the younger maids interjected eagerly.

Mrs. Smith smiled knowingly. "Yes, the young master has a genius IQ. But I'm afraid he might have trouble making friends or finding a fiancée in the future. He's too much of a bookworm. “

“Speaking of fiancées”, one of the younger maids interjected. "Have you heard about the number of suitors our young miss has? It's absolutely ridiculous. And she's just a child, for goodness sake."

For children born to Psions, the prospect of an arranged marriage was an inevitable one. After all, it was believed that children born to parents who were both Psions were more likely to awaken Psionic powers after puberty. As the children of two Psions, Kristine and Christopher were considered hot commodities in the Psion society.

To normal folks, the practice of arranged marriages felt backward and outdated. But for Psions, it was simply a way of life. It seemed unlikely that it would change anytime soon.

Even though Psionic powers had only begun manifesting a few decades ago, the tradition of arranged marriages had already become deeply ingrained in the current culture. Of course, not everyone agreed with this new tradition.

The other younger maid chuckled softly as she remembered how enraged their master was when other families kept asking if his little princess was available for an engagement. Their young miss was only eight years old, and yet there were more than twenty families vying to court her.

"That's why we need to protect her," Mrs. Smith exclaimed. "She doesn't even understand what it means to be engaged or married yet."

"Christopher also needs to learn how to talk to people too," the younger maid nodded in agreement. "He needs to be more sociable. He hasn't received any engagement offers yet because he's barely in the public eye. But I know once word starts to spread about his genius, the offers are going to come pouring in."

"He doesn't even need his genius to attract suitors," Mrs. Smith added sarcastically. "Both he and Kristine are the most adorable angels ever." She looked towards young master Christopher's room as they continued their conversation.

Christopher sat at his desk, scrolling through the endless information about this alternate Earth he had been reborn on.

The laptop in front of him was a marvel of technology, with its 8k display and lithium-air battery. Despite its impressive features, it wasn't enough to surprise him. It was still felt too similar to the technology of his past life.

His blond hair was parted down the middle and his golden eyes were partially hidden by his bangs, but there was no hiding the ethereal aura he emitted, thanks to the beauty books he and his sister had obtained through the system. Every woman and girl who laid eyes on him found him absolutely adorable.

"This is a strange world," Christopher thought as he gazed out the window at the snow falling gently to the ground below. The snow-covered everything, turning the world white. This 3-month winter season was not always the norm.

He was reviewing all the information he had just discovered on the internet. He learned that about 48 years ago, scientists had predicted that an asteroid called Icarus would impact Earth and cause destruction on a global scale. Other than that, everything else was the same as his previous life's Earth in terms of history and culture.

And as predicted, 38 years ago in 2030, the asteroid finally reached Earth, breaking apart and raining down across the world. The dust and debris spread out over the planet like a blanket, blocking sunlight and plunging most of Earth into an endless winter.

Fortunately, the government had enough time to construct enough shelters around the country to house most of its citizens, and many wealthy people even moved to the Southern Hemisphere where the winter was predicted to be milder.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

The impact winter only lasted six years before the weather patterns began to return to normal again. But that still left millions dead in their wake. Those living in shelters were fortunate enough not to succumb to starvation and freezing, but many people still died in those shelters from infighting or illness.

When the climate warmed up, people slowly started returning to the cities and towns where they once called home.

However, they noticed that many of these areas were now claimed as territory by mutant animals with powerful supernatural powers and enhanced intelligence. They suspected that the asteroid Icarus was the cause of this change.

People abandoned the idea of reclaiming their homes and fled to live in the safety of the larger cities and towns that weren't taken by predators as they waited for the situation to calm down once more.

A few territories were reclaimed using firearms and weapons that survived the endless winter, but these victories were temporary because they were quickly overrun by other beasts with more powerful abilities.

In less than a decade after the asteroid's impact, human civilization had become concentrated within the bigger towns and cities, leaving the rest of the continent wild and untamed.

Fortunately, a group of humans known as “Psions” also began to awaken their powers. These superhuman individuals, aided by surviving technology and weaponry, rose up to reclaim the land from mutated animals known as "Psi Beasts."

However, even 38 years after the asteroid strike, large areas of the world remained uninhabited by humans, with Psi Beasts roaming free. It was estimated that it would take over a thousand years for humans to fully reclaim these areas.

To this day, thousands of people would lose their lives every year fighting these creatures.

So this was the reason why technology had not advanced much, even in the year 2068,” Christopher realized.

Christopher sighed as he closed the browser window and leaned back in his chair. He couldn't believe how different this world was from the one he had lived in before. He had always loved reading about science fiction and fantasy, but he never expected to be reborn into a world like this.

Christopher heard the sound of a car door slamming shut, signaling the return of his twin sister from her piano recital at the music hall downtown.

"Young miss" he heard the servants call out as Kristine walked into the hallway and waved enthusiastically to them. They all smiled at her, knowing that she was well-loved by her kind heart and beautiful personality.

He could hear her laughter and the sound of her boots on the marble floor as she made her way up the stairs to his room. "Hey, Chris!" Kristine called out as she burst into his room.

Her long blond hair curled down over her shoulders and down to her waist, while she wore a white recital dress. It was embroidered with gold thread and lace along the bust line and neckline. The skirt had short flounces that hung loosely at her knees.

“I just had the most amazing performance ever."

Christopher grinned at her excitement and replied, "I'm sure you were fantastic, as always. I mean, just look at the amount of Love Points you made today.”

Kristine beamed at his compliment and replied, "I was! I even got a standing ovation from the crowd." She plopped down on his bed and continued, "I can't wait to use the Love Points I got from this performance.

But Christopher could tell something was off with his twin sister. She still pretended to act cheerily in front of him even when there were no servants around. This is how he knew she was upset despite her cheerful mood.

Christopher gently asked, "Kris, are you okay? You seem upset."

Kristine hesitated before letting out a frustrated rant, her voice rising to a high pitch.

"Why do I have to be the one to play the piano when you're just as talented as I am? I don't want to play an instrument, I want to stay home and browse the Internet like you!"

She glared at her brother, her eyes blazing with anger as she slammed her fists against his desk angrily," Don't you see that this is unfair?!"

"Did something happen at the recital?" Christopher asked, trying to calm his sister down with a sympathetic smile on his face.

"You should see the creep that came up to me after the show wanting to introduce his son to me." Kristine gritted her teeth, "With the look in his eyes, I swear they're the ones that want to be my groom instead."

She said in disgust, "I am only eight years old, you know!"

Christopher shrugged off his sister's angry rant as he laughed nervously, "Hey! Maybe they will figure it out and you'll get introduced to a girl one day!"

He knew that Kristine still had a preference for females so he was playing with fire by joking around with her.

Kristine gritted her teeth, "How dare you! You're lucky you got reborn as the correct gender!"

She crossed her arms and glared at her brother who laughed nervously again.

"Sorry, that was a bad joke," Christopher apologized.

“Well, why don't you experience it first-hand? I'm sure you'll like what you feel," Kristine said in a hushed whisper.

One of the benefits of the psychic link created by the system was the ability to share sensations, memories, and information with each other. It was a useful tool when they needed to communicate with each other from afar.

But there were times when Kristine would use their connection to bombard bombarding him with the unpleasant sensations of living as a girl. She was frustrated at her situation and wanted to show him how unfortunate she was living as the opposite gender.

"Wait-a-minute.." Christopher said before her memories began to force themselves on him like a tidal wave.
