Chapter 21 - A Right to Privacy

Chapter 21 - A Right to Privacy

"What are you doing, Dad?" Kristine yelled as her father lunged forward and grabbed her wrist, his hand glowing with a faint blue aura.

Kristine's eyes widened as she realized what was happening. She pulled her arm back, trying to break free from her father's grip. Her face was filled with fear.

"It's true, I have powers!" she cried, desperately tugging at her captured wrist. She was trying to convince him that using his Psionic power was unnecessary.

Chris watched in worry as his sister struggled against their father. He hoped that their father wouldn't be able to find out about the Devil and Angel system. He prayed that the system had some way of concealing itself.

Garrett ignored his daughter's resistance and tightened his grip on her wrist. He closed his eyes and focused on reading her mind and emotions, probing into her thoughts and secrets.

He found everything was too coincidental. It was unbelievable that his children would suddenly gain Psionic powers shortly after learning about the military school.

He could sense she was telling the truth about possessing powers, but he also felt she was hiding something. He had long noticed how his children had become more fearful of him since discovering his psionic powers a few years prior. Despite this, he had always respected their privacy and refused to use his ability on them. But now, his curiosity got the better of him. He was determined to uncover any secrets his children may be hiding.

Pushing past Kristine's resistance, Garrett delved into her memories, determined to uncover her secrets. He saw brief snippets of her playing piano in front of an audience and showering with teammates. They were just surface memories. He had to delve even further, to unearth the secrets she kept locked away.

Kristine felt her mind fighting against her father's probing as her body tensed up. Her skin prickled as the hairs on her arms rose and goosebumps spread over her skin. A shiver coursed through her, as she felt the memories of her system and past lives, kept deep within her mind, being uncovered by her father's Psionic powers.

"No!" Kristine screamed in her mind, resisting his probing with all her might. She couldn't let him discover her secret past as a reincarnated person. It was a fate worse than death. She could handle the exposure of their Love and Devil system, but the thought of her father discovering that she and Chris were both inhabited by a thirty-year-old loser was too much to bear. She was happy with the way things were and loved her new family. She didn't want anything to change how their new parents viewed Christopher and herself.

However, just when she thought her secrets were about to be uncovered, a stream of blood began to pour out from her nostrils. She swayed unsteadily before collapsing, her body going limp as her shocked father lunged forward to catch her. As she slipped into unconsciousness, she whispered a silent prayer that her father had failed to uncover any of her secrets.

Garrett's expression darkened as he cradled Kristine's unconscious body in his arms, feeling concerned for his daughter's well-being. He wondered what secret could be so important that she would resist his powers to this extent. He had seen this happen before, with many insurgents who tried to resist his abilities. But this time, it was different. This time, it was his own daughter.

"Kris!" Christopher rushed forward when he saw his sister's body go limp in their father's arms.

The servants, who were well aware of Master Garrett's powers, also rushed forward. Their faces were filled with concern for their young miss. They had all undergone a similar probing by Garrett when they were first hired, but they had never seen anyone resist it to such a degree. They couldn't even begin to imagine what Kristine was hiding. They also wanted to know if their young miss was telling the truth about how she and her brother were Psions.

"She fainted," Garrett said, turning to Christopher. "She was resisting my powers. Luckily, I had to release it in time."

"Is she going to be okay?" Christopher asked, his voice filled with worry. He had always been aware of his father's powers, but he had never seen him use it on him and his sister before. He was unaware that trying to resist it would result in something like this.

His heart raced as he wondered what their father had managed to uncover. He did not know if he had managed to get a glimpse of any of the secrets that he and Kristine had been trying so hard to keep safe.

"Yes, she'll be fine," Garrett replied, walking towards a nearby bench in the gym while the others trailed behind him. He gently lay Kristine down on the bench, taking a moment to reflect on the situation. He felt guilty as he gazed down at his daughter's unconscious body. The sight of her pale complexion and the dried darkened blood on her nostrils and clothes was heartbreaking.

"What have I done?" he whispered to himself, feeling a wave of guilt wash over him. He had always been respectful of his children's private thoughts and feelings. But this time, his curiosity had overpowered his responsibilities as a father. It led him to probe into his daughter's mind without her consent and caused her harm.

"Please bring all the graduation gifts insides," Garrett suddenly told the servants around him, his voice low and steady. The servants took the hint, understanding that their master wanted to be left alone with his children, and quickly gathered the bags of gifts from the blue-matted floor and brought them into the living area.

As the servants left, Garrett was left alone with his children, surrounded by the quiet of the gym. He took a deep breath and finally came to peace with the decision to give up trying to uncover his children's secrets.

"Meet me in the study with your sister when she wakes up," Garrett said in a calm, fatherly tone. "I want to see a demonstration of your powers. If they are as powerful enough, then the military academy may be the appropriate choice for the both of you."

Christopher nodded, relieved that their father had not uncovered their secret. However, they now had to demonstrate their abilities to their father. With the abilities granted by the system, this should be an easy task.

Garrett's thoughts shifted back to his daughter.

"In the meantime, keep an eye on your sister. I'll have to schedule a doctor to visit." Garrett said as he turned towards the door.

His ability to delve into the minds of others by touch was anything but harmless. This power had proven useful in his line of work as an interrogator, but it had resulted in many fatalities and dead insurgents. With a little more effort, he could even send someone into a coma. It was a dangerous power, one he usually wielded with great caution. But now, he couldn't help but worry about the potential long-term effects of his actions on his daughter.

Garrett was about start leaving when he heard Christopher's voice call out to him. He turned to face his son who had a serious expression on his face.

"Dad, one day we will tell you everything," Christopher said with a hint of sadness. "I promise."

"I know you will," Garrett replied, patting his son's head. Christopher, now standing at the same height as his father, flinched instinctively, a reminder of the strain their relationship had been put under by Garrett's actions.

Garrett felt a pang of sadness as he saw Christopher flinch at his touch, a stark reminder of the trust he had broken. What he had done to Kristine today was not something that would be resolved in a single day. As he made his way out of the gym, he made a promise to himself. He vowed to would never use his powers on his children again. He would let go of his curiosity and trust in his children to share their secrets with him when the time was right.

As soon as Garrett stepped out of the gym, Christopher let out a deep sigh of relief. He had been tense for what seemed like an eternity.

He understood the reason for his father's action. The realization that their own children did not trust them would be an incredibly difficult thing to handle for any parent. He could imagine the deep worry and anger that led his father to take such drastic measures.

But at the same time, he couldn't shake the feeling that his father was wrong to use his powers on Kristine. They were both 14 years old now, and they deserved the right to their own privacy. Yet, as he looked back at Kristine, still unconscious on the mat, he realized that his father must have felt that the situation was dire enough to warrant such drastic measures.

As he approached Kristine, still unconscious on the bench, he came to understand that his father must have some reason to believe the situation to be dire and required immediate action. Despite all of this, Christopher forgave his father and he hoped his sister would be able to do the same when she awoke.
