Chapter 41 - A Skeptical Crowd

Chapter 41 - A Skeptical Crowd

The cadets from Bordentown Military Institute arrived at the edge of the city and reacted much like their Camport Military Academy counterparts. They were stunned by the sight of Danger Area 642, was formerly known as Philadelphia.

Crumbling buildings lined the streets and scaffolding surrounded every still intact building. Evidence of the city's struggle was etched into every corner, from graffiti scrawled on walls to makeshift shelters constructed from debris.

A blue-haired girl with grey eyes was the first one to disembark off the bus. Her unnatural blue hair was a mutation cause by the awakening her Psionic powers.

She was one of the her school's many Psion cadet. Her name was Lori Harris and you could feel the arrogance in her bones. After all, she knew that her school boasted ten Psions, while she had heard that Camport had only four. She felt confident in their superiority to the cadets from the school in New York.

"Man, those Camport cadets are to shit themselves." one of the Psion cadets said as he disembarked. Similar sentiments were shared in hushed tones as the other Psions stepped out.

However, as they followed their instructor and neared the entrance of the city, they noticed a dead wolf being cleaned up. Its massive size made it clear that it was a Psi-Beast. Blood filled its once-fierce eyes, dripping down like tears. It continued to trickled down its fur, staining the pavement below. A few gunshot wounds marred its fur, evidence of the recent fight that likely took place shortly before their arrival.

"What's going on here?" one of the Bordentown instructors asked a nearby guard.

"Two Psion cadets from Camport took down a Psi Beast just moments ago," the guard replied, gesturing toward the lifeless wolf. "They killed it in melee combat. It was honestly crazy to watch."

"No way," some of the cadets murmured amongst themselves. They were beginning to realize that their rivals from Camport were more formidable than they had anticipated.

Lori's confidence wavered slightly, but she quickly brushed it off. She still believed that Bordentown was still the superior institution.

"Whatever," she scoffed, flipping her blue hair over her shoulder. "They just took down an injured wolf. Total fluke, nothing special. We'll still crush them." She reassured her fellow Psions.

Captain Bradshaw led the twins to Major Young's office, a spacious room filled with scattered maps and documents. Old photographs and medals adorned the walls, chronicling the Major's many years of service.

Upon entering, the twins received a Hatred Point notification from the system.

+55 Hatred Points from Samuel Young

They exchanged puzzled glances but brushed it aside since the value was especially low.

Major Young, a stern, middle-aged Caucasian man with a chiseled jaw, stood to greet them. "Cadets Williams," he said, nodding appreciatively. "I heard about what happened. Thank you for your assistance. Your quick thinking and remarkable skills saved lives today."

The twins detected frustration in the Major's voice, simmering just below the surface.

"Thank you, Major," Christopher replied, his tone polite yet cautious. "We were simply doing our duty."

"We couldn't just stand by and let people get hurt," added Kristine.

"Good, good," Major Young responded, grateful for Garrett's role in raising such humble and talented children. "I just wanted to meet our two heroes. You're free to go."

Major Young sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "You're perceptive, cadet. When I requested military reinforcements to help with the missing civilians, I didn't expect a bunch of brats."

Though understanding the Major's disappointment, the twins felt slightly offended at being called brats.

Major Young, noticing their expressions, quickly tried to clarify, not wanting to offend the children of a Brigadier General. "No offense to you and your fellow cadets, but many of our civilians are missing, and every day that passes, the chance of finding them alive dwindles. I'm frustrated that the military isn't taking this situation more seriously."

He added, somewhat flustered, "That's not to say I don't appreciate your presence. You two have already demonstrated exceptional competence in handling yourselves."

Christopher responded, "We take no offense, Major. Your concerns are understandable." The twins acknowledged the Major's sincerity and determination to help the missing civilians.

"Thanks for telling us all this, Major," said Kristine. "We'll do our best to help in any way we can."

A faint smile crossed Major Young's face, his eyes reflecting a glimmer of hope. "I appreciate that, Cadets. With your help, perhaps we can bring our people home safely.

With the meeting concluded, the twins saluted and left the Major's office to join the waiting cadets in the field.

The cadets from Bordentown Military Institute couldn't contain their excitement about the two Psions who had taken down the Psi Beast. They eagerly questioned their Camport counterparts for any information they could gather.

"So, we heard the two Psions are twins?" one Bordentown cadet asked a group of Camport cadets, a dreamy look in her eyes.

"Yeah, that's right," replied a Camport cadet. "They're pretty incredible. Christopher is the hottest guy in our school, and Kristine is the cutest girl. You should see them in action!"

The Bordentown cadets were also curious about Gurpreet and Kevin, the other two Psions from Camport. They found Gurpreet to be friendly and easygoing, while they were a bit intimidated by Kevin's more unnerving ability.

Meanwhile, Lori and the other nine Psions from Bordentown stuck together. As fellow Psions, they had formed a tight-knit clique within their military institute. They eagerly discussed the Camport Psions among themselves.

"I can't wait to meet these twins," Lori said to her fellow Psions. "They sound too good to be true. If they're anything like the rumors say, they might actually give us a run for our money."

She felt the description their counterparts were giving them was too ridiculous. Children of a Brigadier General who had good looks, a prestigious background, book smarts, and exceptional fighting talents.

Another Bordentown Psion chimed in, "Nah, I'm just excited to meet other Psions outside of our group."

In Bordentown Military Institute, much like in the twins' school, an invisible divide existed between Psions and Non-Psions. It was for this reason that the ten of them had formed an exclusive clique solely for Psions.

As the cadets learned more about the twins, anticipation grew for the return of Christopher and Kristine from the Major's office. The students were eager to see two young Psions who had already managed to garner such attention and admiration.

Soon enough, they saw the twins come into the field following Captain Bradshaw, one of the people in charge of a company in this area. The Bordentown cadets were stunned when they caught sight of the twins.

Kristine Williams, clad in her military uniform, had her hair bun come undone during the skirmish with the Psi Beast. Her stunning face was framed by the damp blonde locks that clung to her cheeks, a result of her sweat and exertion from the battle. The uniform accentuated her athletic, slim figure, highlighting her commitment to fitness. Her flawless, healthy skin seemed to emit a radiant glow in the sunlight, enhancing her alluring presence.

Christopher, similarly dressed in a military uniform, looked as if his bulging muscles might burst through the fabric at any moment. Since the beginning of the school year, he had found no other way to pass the time besides exercising, causing the fitted uniform issued to him at the start of the term to become too tight. His chiseled jawline and intense eyes added to his already attractive appearance, making it difficult to look away. Just like his twin, Christopher's skin was immaculate and healthy, giving him an exuberant, youthful glow that set him apart from ordinary teenage boys.

Both twins possessed mesmerizing golden eyes, a rare hue but not entirely unusual amid the myriad mutations in the post-Icarus calamity world. Their gazes were hypnotic, and one could easily imagine becoming lost in them for minutes on end.

Their perfect skin made it seem as though they were recently sculpted statues brought to life. The sunlight bouncing off their faces created a halo-like glow surrounding them.

The Bordentown cadets were awestruck and somewhat skeptical. Were these truly the two Psions they'd heard so much about? They didn't look like they belonged in military school.

Lori wanted to say something to intimidate the twins but she was left speechless by their appearance.

She looked at Kristine especially, examining her appearance. Her eyes stopped at Kristine's modest chest. She looked down at her own chest in comparison and exhaled with gratitude. A smile of relief crept across her face as she found comfort in the fact that she had bested Kristine in at least one area.

Meanwhile, the cadets from the twins' school, were already accustomed to the twin's good looks and paid it no mind. Despite feeling a hint of pride, they remained focused on their individual duties and their own conversations.
