Chapter 32 - A Lavish Soirée (Part 3)

While Kristine twirled around the dance floor with Timothy, Christopher found himself dancing with a series of partners. If he was still in his previous body, he would've been too nervous to do such a thing. But his newfound confidence, thanks to his good looks and rewards from the "Angel and Devil" system, made him feel bolder than he would have in his past life.

His latest dance partner was captivating. She introduced herself as Elaine Long, an albino Asian girl with mesmerizing purple eyes behind glasses and delicate, pale skin.

She wore a frown on his face. It was apparent to Christopher that Elaine's family probably pushed her to approach him, hoping to form a connection between their families. Despite this, he could tell she was trying to make the most of the situation and enjoy the dance.

As they moved to the music, Christopher was pleasantly surprised by Elaine's dancing prowess. Her elegant steps and fluid movements showcased her dedication and natural talent in the art of dancing. Soon, he found himself genuinely enjoying their dance.

Sensing Christopher's surprise, Elaine smiled playfully and asked, "You're not disappointed in my dancing skills, are you?"

Christopher shook his head. "Not at all. You're an amazing dancer, Elaine."

She blushed, her pale skin turning a delicate shade of pink. "I saw you dancing with your sister, Kristine, earlier. You two were so totally in sync. It was so nice to watch."

"Don't bother comparing yourself." Christopher grinned. "Our connection is unique, something no one can match," he said, slyly referencing their shared system.

Elaine's eyes sparkled with curiosity, but she didn't press further, understanding it was likely a connection only twins shared. She focused on matching Christopher's steps, grateful for her parents' insistence on dance lessons.

Still, she was honestly surprised at how good Christopher’s dancing skills were, especially at his age. It was like he had been learning dancing before he was even born.

As the pair glided across the dance floor, their movements became increasingly fluid and in sync.

Christopher found himself increasingly impressed by Elaine's ability to adapt and follow his lead. He hadn't expected anyone their age to match him and Kristine.

Their conversation continued as they danced, flowing effortlessly and covering a range of topics from hobbies to interests.

Christopher shared his love for retro TV shows and movies, especially those predating 2020. "I know it's odd, but there's something about them I can't get enough of," he said with enthusiasm.

Elaine couldn't help but laugh.

"What's so funny?" Christopher asked, genuinely curious.

"Well, I just thought with your looks, you'd be some sort of playboy. Turns out, you're a total dork," Elaine confessed.

He smiled sheepishly. "The family servants find it strange too. Kristine enjoys them, but she's better at hiding it."

"What about you?" Christopher asked, swaying gently to the music. "Any interests?"

"I've always loved studying other cultures," Elaine said, her eyes bright with excitement. "But the existence of Psi beasts makes travel impossible."

She reminisced about her childhood. "When I was four, our family lived in a large city in China. Our city was like this one but overrun by Psi beasts from the sea. The architecture and culture...We lost so much that day. My family managed to escape, but I still dream of returning someday."

Elaine, feeling more at ease, changed the subject and opened up about the pressure she faced from her parents. "They always push me to look my best, to make connections and establish alliances. Sometimes it feels like I'm just a pawn in their game. Like what century are we in?

Christopher nodded sympathetically, aware of how his parents had to fend off numerous marriage proposals aimed at him and his sister. "I totally get what you mean. Our society can be seriously messed up. I mean, it's like we're trying to secure an heir to the throne or something."

Elaine sighed. "Oh my god, that's exactly how I feel. I wish we could just live our lives without all this nonsense."

Despite the somber topic, they found comfort in knowing they weren't alone in their struggles. As the final song ended, Christopher and Elaine went their separate ways, both of them secretly hoping to see one another again.

Christopher, in particular, felt drawn to Elaine despite her strange appearance. In his past life, he struggled with low self-esteem. He even recalled how he wasn't able to confess to Lily, his childhood crush. But now, with his improved status and good looks, he felt confident enough to pursue a relationship.

As the music faded and the DJ wrapped up, Christopher left the dance floor and made his way to the family table, where his mother, Kristine, and their grandfather sat. As he approached, his grandfather couldn't help but tease the twins now that both of them were here.

"Well, well, you two certainly appeared to enjoy yourselves with your dance partners. Timothy and Elaine, am I right?" Their grandfather, Simon Oscar, chuckled. "Fine choices."

Simon was well aware of the reputations held by the Long and Brink families. While they enjoyed a positive standing in the high society, there were some unsavory rumors swirling around them.

While many of the Long family's rumors were open secrets among the elite, whispers had begun to circulate about Richard Brink. He hoped they were merely baseless rumors. At the very least, Elaine and Timothy seemed to be good kids and were raised well.

The twins blushed and fell silent under their grandfather's teasing remarks.

After enduring a bit more teasing from their grandfather, the twins set off for home alongside their mother. Along the way, they made a stop at the hospital to check on their father, who was still recovering from his gunshot.

As they relayed the party's events to their bedridden father, his eyes sparkled with curiosity when his children describe their individual dance partners.

Upon returning home, Elaine excitedly shared the evening's events with her sickly little brother, Elliot, who suffered from a heart condition and was bedridden. "You should have seen the decorations, Elliot, and the dancing was simply amazing!" she exclaimed, hoping to lift his spirits.

In Psion high society, it was common knowledge that Elaine's parents were cousins, a fact that led to her albinism and poor eyesight, as well as Elliot's heart condition. Their family once believed that inbreeding would result in the birth of powerful psions.

However, when their children faced various health issues, they recognized their mistakes. In search of a fresh start and refuge from the Psi beasts, they moved to the United States, abandoning their inbreeding practices.

Despite the location change, Elaine's parents still displayed arrogance and snobbery, remnants of their previous lifestyle.

Elaine sighed, shaking her head at the thought. "You know, Elliot," she confided in her brother, "I met someone at the party who actually understands what it's like dealing with all this messed up society."

"Really?" Elliot asked, his eyes shining with curiosity.

"Yeah, his name is Christopher," she said, her smile widening as she remembered their time together on the dance floor.

Elliot playfully teased, "Oooh, my sister's got a boyfriend!"

Elaine rolled her eyes, but couldn't help laughing. "We're just friends, Elliot. But it's nice to have someone who understands what we're going through."

Elliot's face brightened, and he gave his sister a knowing look. "Well, I'm happy for you, sis."

Elaine smiled warmly, appreciating her brother's support. "Thanks, Elliot. You know, growing up looking like this hasn't always been easy, but it's made me who I am today."

"Yeah, I know," Elliot nodded, his young face full of understanding. "You've always been strong, even when people teased you 'cause of how you look."

"You've been strong too, buddy," Elaine reassured him, gently ruffling his hair.

"Good night, sis," Elliot said.

Elaine retreated to her bedroom and settled into bed, she couldn't help but replay the evening's events in her mind. The laughter, the dancing, and the unexpected connection she'd found with Christopher brought a warm feeling to her chest. As she lay there, she glanced down at her Psion bracelet.

With a flick of her wrist, she brought up a hologram of her contact list and found Christopher's name. A smile spread across her face as she stared at the image, thinking of how she'd found someone who understood her. Not to mention his dreamy looks.

As her eyelids grew heavy and sleep began to claim her. Elaine drifted off to sleep with a smile on her face while Christopher's name still glowed softly on her Psion bracelet.
