The following day, Sam and Mahi meet up at the cafe.
"I just wanted to apologize for yesterday," Mahi says.
"No worries, I should be the one apologizing," Sam replies.
"Thanks anyway, senior," she says.
Sam nods. "Is everything okay, Mahi?" he asks.
"Yes, everything's fine."
"What about the case? Any updates?"
"My uncle has already begun the investigation. No need to worry."
"I actually wanted to talk to you about something else," she mentions.
"What is it?"
Sam, have you heard about Tevin and my brother?" Maahi inquires.
"What's going on between them? Why do you ask?" Sam responds, taking a sip of water.
"Well, I think they..." She pauses to clear her throat. "They were a couple," she reveals.
"What?" He chokes, placing the glass on the table. "Are you serious?"
"Yes, I overheard my brother and mother talking yesterday. I'm certain Tevin was the one who broke my brother's heart."
"Huh! Tevin? No way, he wouldn't do that. I know him."
She interrupts him and says, "Why do you think that? Are you against it?"
"Hey, no, that's not what I meant. I believe Tevin wouldn't hurt someone he loves," he clarifies.
Stolen story; please report.
"I heard it correctly. He's the one who broke up," she insists.
"Maybe. I'm not sure," he responds. "So, what's the deal? Have you talked to your brother about it?"
"No, he won't tell the truth. If he wanted to, he would have done so already," she explains, pausing. "And he didn't even mention that they were in the same class."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Maahi confirms with a nod.
"What's your plan now?" Sam inquires.
"I hope they can reconcile". Maahi says
"What?" Sam asks. "Seriously! Do you even know why they broke up?"
"No, but they can still give it a shot."
"Maahi, I don't think it's a good idea. First, you should find out what your brother thinks. Sometimes what we believe is best for others can actually end up hurting them."
"I understand, but I'm pretty sure he wants to talk. I saw their photo in my brother's cupboard."
"What?"
"Yeah... I was curious, so I snooped around my brother's room when he was out. I found their photo hidden. If my brother truly despised Tevin, he wouldn't have kept it."
Sam suddenly had a thought. "Maahi," he says, "Yesterday Tevin asked me about your brother. Just so you know."
"Wait, seriously? And you're telling me now?"
"Yeah, I forgot. He was asking about your brother's activities and schedule. When I asked if he knew him, he said something like 'didn't you hear what Rehaan said, we're not acquainted'."
"It's all so complicated."
"Exactly, let them figure it out on their own."
"So, you're not going to help me?"
"It's not that. I just have a bad feeling about this."
"Sam, if you help me, then I'll consider our situation."
"What do you think about us?"
"How about we give dating a try?"
Sam leans in closer. "Wait, are you being serious?"
"Hmm, I feel bad about what happened and I'd like to get to know you better. Are you open to talking?"
"Then let's reconcile Tevin and your brother."
"You agreed so quickly," she says with a smile.
"Hmm...maybe," Sam smiles and asks, "Now, how do you propose we bring them together?"
Maahi grinned as she picked up her phone and dialed Tevin's number.
Rehaan was in his room, studying, when his phone rang. Seeing that it was Maahi calling, he answered.
"Hey, are you home?"
Yes, I am. Why do you ask?
"Can you meet me at the 'Lake view' park near the cafe we visited yesterday?"
Why? Is everything okay?
"Nothing's wrong, I just need to talk to you about something important. Can you come?"
Sure, I'll be there soon. Just wait for me.
Rehaan ended the call, while Maahi on the other end couldn't contain her mischievous grin of success.
To be continued...
