Chapter 88

The drone-bought meal might be even better than yesterday. It's hard to tell when I'm wolfing it down without chewing because the booklet distracted me for too long. Time is money. It's especially true since Baldie explained how much the feds pay me for each hour in the game.

Apart from that, my life depends on their stupid quest. While the goal is closer than ever, I can't risk leaving it for the last minute. The shower can wait too, laying all day on my bed with the controller on shouldn't make me that dirty.

[Welcome Back, Arnim 13642!]

Why does it feel calmer once the logo loads? Not even smoking had this effect on me before, this game is nuts. Or the controller, it's hard to tell which one causes this. Reading the manual wasn't exactly wasted. Skimming through the settings, it hinted at which options to look for.

The best part is that they all come with the device, not from CineMraft. SoniSung doesn't paywall everything. They must think, that once you have their controller, you should use it to the fullest. The first thing to change is how and when the Needs are visible.

The six bars for my real body and character will appear at the bottom whenever any needs reach yellow. This way the in-game food won't hide the hunger, and I'll notice in time if there is a strong need for a break. This should help with the playthrough as well.

Another setting allows me to see my stamina in real time, without leaving it up to how it feels. When the exhaustion effect pops up in the field of view it's too late. It happens when my stamina drops below two, yet it becomes detrimental already below five.

The max value is ten, like my attributes, until the tenth level unlocks the real ones. It will be in the top left corner, out of the way but still within reach. The other important gauge is for food poisoning. While I still need to look into how the effect works, the setting is already there.

After this long break, the chance of food poisoning is down to twelve percent. Let's start up the browser to find out what that means. My character is still on the same street, except it's day now, and the Pharmacy's crew left a while ago.

They farmed the death rats twice, so they must have finished the mission. The system even warned me about the invalid quest, and the charred house looks brand new now. There are two more rat jobs nearby, yet it would be dumb to use the potions before looking up that thing.

Their browser loads way faster here than on my salvaged PC. In the meantime, I also learned how to open the FAQ, but let's check out Wroddit first. There's a thread about potions and food poisoning on the front page, with comments from a moment ago.

[As they work now, potions and food are easy to abuse. You don't need to eat the full meal to get a five-minute bonus, if you eat it bit by bit, it can last for hours. It's the same with the healing potion, a few drops will do the trick, so Deep Dive users have an unfair advantage.]

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

So this is a Deep Dive thing? Well, sure. You'd have less control if you played it on the PC or even in VR and had to push buttons for the actions. If you clicked the food and the character ate the whole thing, you couldn't extend the timers that simple.

All those huge companies made this game with Deep Dive in mind, yet it's available on other consoles too. To keep it fair for everyone, the developers have their threads on the subwroddit, and this is one of them. They ask the players what changes they suggest here.

[Until we find a better solution, we introduce Food Poisoning. Every time a vial touches the player's lips, it will increase the chance by one percent. Once the effect triggers, you can no longer consume potions for ten minutes.]

This comment comes from a user with a star by his name, emphasizing that he's with the Dev Team. With hundreds of dislikes on the message, desperate players suggest other solutions. This explains a lot.

The poisoning chance became too high since I only took small sips from the potions. The system then penalized me in the worst possible moment for cutting corners. Finding this exploit was an accident, but they should have warned the players. In the game, not on Wroddit.

[The Food Poisoning will tick down one percent per minute if you didn't consume food or potions in that time. We are considering alternative solutions for a future patch. Until then, try not to overdose yourselves.]

One comment has more likes than the dev's original announcement, offering an insight. The username is familiar, I have seen it on the forums in the last few days. Until now I couldn't make the connection.

It spells DragonS. After Little Red - CrimsonMage from the Pharmacy - mentioned, he must be DragonSlayer from the game. She said he spends more on the forums than playing, and sure enough, he answered most of the questions I searched.

His solution is long-winded but otherwise sensible.

[Have the effect only kick in once the player drank 60% of the vial, and adjust the efficiency to how much they took. This way, they can't split the potions and get a penalty if they only consume a small part, but they can merge used vials.]

Two devs reacted to his post and there is a long thread spawned from it with pros and cons. This makes playing harder for Deep Dive users since they might spill, which never happens on a PC. Yeah, like when the zombie knocked out the potion from my hand.

He burned himself to death with it, yet the drop that landed in my mouth still healed me. With his solution, it wouldn't have healed me at all. To iterate on his suggestion, another user said they should add more control to console users.

[Make it so you must hold the button while the character drinks the potion. If you let it up too early, he won't drink the whole thing, like when the Divers spill. This would even the field, and you'd have to pay closer attention during combat.]

Wait, that wouldn't help me, it would only make things harder for everyone else too. Why is there so much positive feedback on the comment though? Oh, it comes from PVPers. That's fair. Depending on what they play on, it would be the difference between life and death.

It matters less against monsters who aren't as fast or don't heal. In a duel where your skill decides your fate, drawing out the effect, or spilling the vial would be huge. Further down the thread, the devs promised this method would be in the game in the next patch.

It happened only five minutes ago. How often do they patch this title? And what will happen with the food poisoning once they change it? Is it safe to drink now that it's down to twelve percent? No, it's down to nine, so it should be fine.

It's time to stock up on the potions if the exploit will no longer work. Will those guys give me an extra discount?
