As soon as the sinking like sensation disappeared, Alec opened his eyes. Looking around in apparent confusion, but seeing nothing in the pitch black darkness.
His confusion only rose as he registered the comfort of a cushioned seat. That he could appreciate even more so, after sitting on a rocky ground for hours.
Despite it being a great relief to his body, the current situation still remained unknown to him. Thus making Alec unable to relax his mind, and catch a breath of relief. Even when he felt the nice chill of air-conditioning, and a scent that smelled like-
"Pop-corn?"
Much to his apparent surprise, he recieved an answer to that statement. As it came out more like a question, than he had intended.
"I have some. Want any?"
Looking at the direction of the new voice, he saw nothing except the same pitch black. Before he could address that another response came.
"Oh right. Let me turn on the lights first."
Then after a brief pause, there was light. Looking around only a little made Alec realise, it was truly a movie theatre. A decent one at that with reclining seats.
The front screen as of yet was blank, with nearly all the seats empty, and no sign of the exit door. The two seats that were currently occupied, were the ones he was sitting on and right next to him.
On which Alec saw a rather small sunfish, inside a slightly bigger fishbowl. Having a popcorn bucket right next to it.
"Hey. Can you throw a popcorn piece to me in the bowl? Eat some if you would like to."
Without making any mentionable response, Alec just took a handful of popcorn. Threw one inside the fish bowl, and ate the rest he grabbed for himself.
"Ha! You look pretty desensitized. Had a long day, huh?"
To which Alec heaved a deep sigh, and then responded.
"Yeah. It's been ten days of-"
But got interrupted in the middle of it.
"Shh! The movie is about to start, I don't want any spoilers."
The lights above them got much dimmer then, as the projector turned on and a timer started with it. Looking at which Alec thought.
If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
'Spoilers? What does that mean? And the number count is going up from one, strange.'
"Oh right. Have this."
A blank piece of paper landed in Alec's lap. Which he picked up and checked both sides, before putting it on his lap again. With that done the counter reached ten, and was no longer presented on the screen.
After which the sunfish spoke again, but with a much more reserved tone than before.
"Let me tell you this in brief detail, as I have told everyone who has been here. I am an overseer of interworld travels. This is a trial for twenty unique ability candidates, including you. You have to stay seated for the entire length of the movie shown, or you would get disqualified. There will be questions on the sheet from time to time. That you have to answer, or you will get disqualified."
The serious tension dissipated, as soon as the sunfish next spoke. Since it went back to its earlier laidback tone.
"Got it? Or should I repeat? There is no issue if you need me to."
Alec shook his head sideways, and then spoke.
"Yeah, I got it. But thanks."
"Cool. Oh, look the movie has started."
The opening sequence began, with a shot of sunset that blur shifted over to the cityscape. Hovering through the traffic of cars, then to the sidewalk. With a bunch of people there passing each other. Skillfully and without creating any commotion, despite the great density of the crowd.
On the same sidewalk it goes even further, following the quick moving footsteps of one singular person. As he continues to jump, dodge, and moves past people or obstacles. Throughout the length of this shot, only his foot and legs being in the perspective.
He was seen wearing jumper sneaker, and some casual sweatpants. Soon his walk began to steadily slow, as he crossed a couple more turns. Finally stopping in front of a glass door. Pushing it open by the handle he entered in, and the view angle changed.
Showing a panned out view of various food items, set neatly on the grocery store cabinets. Close to the entry door was the checkout counter, having a barcode scanner, receipt printing machine, and a bored looking cashier behind it. Lastly there was the fridge, near to it the was person in the camera shot earlier.
Where he was currently standing by, while the fridge door was open. As it covered nearly his entire figure, except for the sneakers he had on.
The glass door entrance then opened once more, and a person holding a black bag entered. Wearing a nervous expression on his face, he held the black bag close to his chest.
Walking in front of the counter, he then bellowed loudly at the cashier.
"Put all the money in this bag!"
Pushing the bag forward, and pulling a gun out of it. He pointed it at the cashier, whose mood took an entire one-eighty. As he tensely put both his hands in the air, before stammering and saying to the armed assailant.
"W-we don't keep any physical money here, man. It's all digital these days."
Near the end of this small dialogue, his eyes looked slightly past the robber. Which the robber then followed, and saw the person with a cold drink in his hand.
With his face finally visible in the screen, it turned out to be-
"No. Way. In hell."
Alec said, now leaning back further in the reclining chair. With a tight grip on the seat handles, and a livid expression on his face. Quite opposite to the Alec on the screen, who was looking calm and collected. As he raised both his hands, while the robber pointed the gun at him and shouted.
"Hey! Give me your wallet!"
To which he slowly brought one of his arms down, reaching to his wallet in the front pocket. Entirely visible to the tense audience in front of him, leaving no question for his intent.
In between this forced exchange of goods, an extremely loud siren rang somewhere from outside.
This lighted the powder keg of nerves in the robber, as he quickly pulled the trigger twice. While having the face of the gun pointed at Alec.
-Bang! Bang!
With smoke coming out of the gun, the robber looked wide eyed at Alec. Who appeared relatively unharmed, one knee to the ground and both bullets missing him. Hitting only a cabinet and the wall, at his either sides.
The looming tension from that scene only broke, when the sunfish said. As the dim lights had gotten brighter with the movie paused.
"Can you explain what happened there exactly?"
Those same exact words appeared in the piece of paper. Making Alec feel more compelled to answer. Although he decided to do so a bit stingily, yet gave a very decent recalling. As he felt, it would be more of a disservice to himself.
"Right when those bullets were shot, it felt like my entire body was screaming. After which my entire focus shifted on to the coming bullets"
Grabbing a couple more popcorn from the bucket, Alec spoke whilst looking straight at the screen.
"But no amount of concentration would allow a normal person, to see a moving bullet with his naked eyes. Rather, it felt like the weight of the bullets was pressing on to me. So I just tried to deflect it, almost like swatting mosquitoes sitting on your hand. Only it was through a phantom limb I never knew I had, and it made me do the illogical action of willing bullets away. And that's how it happened."
As soon as Alec finished saying that, a tick mark soon appeared on the paper. Beside the line of question that he was just asked, very same one that appeared on the empty page.
The lights then got dim once again, in preperation of the movie to once again continue.
