Chapter 40 Shift

Chapter 40 Shift

For quite a while, Emily finally reacted and shouted, "Let me go, bitch!" Anne ignored Emily's cries, pulled her out of the classroom building, then let her go and stood silently to the side.

Louis followed them, feeling helpless and not knowing what to do. Emily looked at Louis with tears in her eyes, unable to speak for a moment, unable to express her frustration.

Louis sighed, took Emily's hand, and said, "Emily, listen to me, it's not what you imagine! She..."

Before Louis could finish, Emily forcefully pulled his hand away and shouted at him, "Louis, I'll remember what happened today!" After that, she wiped away her tears, covered her mouth, and ran outside the school.

Louis felt a wave of sadness in his heart and couldn't let her go. He quickly ran after her and embraced Emily, saying, "Emily, it's not what you think, you're overreacting, don't be unreasonable."

"Overreacting?" Louis's words hurt Emily deeply. She choked back tears and said, "Fine, I'm overreacting. Starting today, we have nothing to do with each other! You can have a great time with that bitch!"

"You... you..." Louis couldn't understand what had gotten into Emily today. While she was sometimes childish, she had never been this unreasonable before. Emily's self-doubt left Louis disappointed, but he didn't realize what she could least tolerate.

Anne walked over and said to Emily in a calm tone, "I think you've misunderstood the relationship between me and Louis. I'm just his bodyguard."

Jealousy had clouded Emily's judgment, and she couldn't believe Anne's words. Instead, she thought Anne was taunting her, she slapped Anne's cheek. Anne didn't dodge the slap but quickly grabbed Emily's wrist and said in a cold tone, "You better watch your behavior. I don't care who you are. Don't let there be a next time, or I won't be lenient with you." Afterward, she let go of Emily's hand and stared at her with an icy gaze.

Emily was startled, and she looked at Louis. Louis stood still without any expression. He also thought that Emily was being too much, and Anne teaching her a lesson might not be a bad thing. Seeing Louis unmoved, Emily's tears flowed uncontrollably. She felt a cold and painful sensation in her heart as if it had thawed and been stabbed by someone.

Emily watched as the two slowly stepped back, a feeling of helplessness filling her. At that moment, a young man ran from the school gate, about 1.8m tall, with fair skin, a polite appearance, and glasses.

He came up behind Emily, placed his hand on her shoulder, and softly asked, "Emily, what's wrong?"

Emily turned her head at the sound and looked at the guy behind her without saying a word, then burst into tears in his arms. There was a hint of joy in the guy's eyes as he embraced Emily.

Louis saw everything, and his heart burned like a fire. Emily had thrown herself into someone else's arms! He suppressed the urge to kill and walked over slowly, saying coldly, "If you want to live, take your dirty hands off her!"

The voice, as if it had come from hell, made the guy's heart race wildly. His hand involuntarily released from Emily's back and he looked at Louis. Seeing that Louis was just a teenager, he angrily asked, "Who do you think you are, spouting off like this? Do you know who I am?"

A cold smile played at the corner of Louis's mouth. "It doesn't matter who you are, but if you dare to touch her again, I'll make sure you don't get a chance to regret it."

The imposing aura that Louis exuded made the guy sense the smell of death and step back. He knew that this level of intimidation required strength as a guarantee, and even his own father's presence wouldn't surpass the youth before him. Suddenly, he remembered someone and couldn't help asking, "Are you... are you Louis?"

"I don't need you to concern yourself with who I am. Right now, get lost immediately, and I might consider letting you go."

Upon hearing Louis's words, Emily angrily said, "Louis, who do you think you are? Do you think everyone in the world is afraid of you?"

Louis's face turned green with anger, and he stared at Emily without speaking.

Emily tugged at the guy's sleeve and said, "Vito, let's go! "

The guy named Vito is the son of Dragon's elder Vic. When Emily grabbed his sleeve, he suddenly realized, "Isn't the other one just a lackey of Dragon? My dad is Dragon's elder; even Emmanuel has to give him some respect. Why should I be afraid of him?" Vito smiled and said, "Louis, sorry, it was Emily who pulled me away. Goodbye!" He walked with Emily, discreetly placing his hand on her waist and giving Louis a sly look. Emily, however, had lost her composure and didn't notice Vito's little gestures.

Louis watched them leave, not moving for a while. Anne stood silently behind him, never uttering a word, feeling a slight sense of guilt towards Louis.

After a while, Louis sat on the curb and angrily punched a nearby tree. "Dammit!"

Anne approached and quietly said, "You should go after her and explain."

Louis forced a bitter smile and replied, "Do you think Emily would listen to an explanation right now?" Anne fell silent.

"I'm sorry, it's because of me..." Louis interrupted Anne's apology with a wave of his hand, shaking his head. "What's meant to happen will happen sooner or later. Emily doesn't trust me, and there will come a day like this. I'm just worried about that Vito, fearing what he might do to Emily..." Louis sighed and couldn't continue.

Anne remained silent, keeping watch beside Louis.

At noon, Emma heard about the situation between Louis and her sister and went to find Louis. Louis had been feeling down all morning, and he finally found someone to confide in. Emma had mixed feelings about the situation, not knowing whether to be happy or worried. She had never let go of her feelings for Louis, but since her sister had established a relationship with him ahead of her, she had kept those emotions buried deep inside. Now that their relationship was in crisis, she felt a hint of joy, but her primary concern was not wanting to see Emily hurt.

Emma talked to Louis about many things, especially matters of the heart for girls. "A girl seeing her beloved person with someone else is something she can't bear, especially when that beloved person indulges the other girl. Emily has always been pampered, so when something like this suddenly happens, she naturally can't accept it. You don't understand girls' feelings well enough!"

After listening, Louis felt some regret, thinking he might have gone too far. He asked, "So what should I do now?"

Emma smiled and said, "You should sincerely apologize to Emily. Maybe there's still a chance to salvage this."

Louis was hesitant, as he wanted to apologize, but the image of Emily letting Vito hold her waist and leaving in front of him reignited his anger. However, he didn't share these thoughts with Emma, only nodding and offering a few words in response.

Louis was in a bad mood and decided to go out for drinks with Steven and Jack in the evening. Steven sensed that something was bothering Louis and asked him what was wrong. However, Louis remained silent, just drinking one glass after another. Louis finally felt the bitterness and helplessness of love.

They drank so much that Louis got drunk, thoroughly drunk for the first time. He didn't know anything and was barely conscious when Steven and Jack helped him back to the hotel.

From then on, Louis and Emily's relationship entered a state of cold war. Neither of them reached out to reconcile, but they both secretly missed each other. Even when they coincidentally met at school, they would turn their heads and pretend not to see each other. Later, Louis found it awkward to run into Emily and rarely went back to school.

During this time, many things happened in the city. First, the mayor was reassigned, and a new mayor took office. Government officials either moved or retired, with half of them leaving. Dante also left during this major reshuffling of the government.

The new mayor embarked on an ambitious project to develop a modern and innovative city.

The new police chief, Peter, focused on managing the organized crime in the city. Shortly after taking office, he mobilized all the police forces for a major crackdown on businesses, leading to a significant reduction in gang-related incidents. The citizens had confidence in the new police chief, believing that they could finally have peaceful days ahead.

Nightmare, a major drug lord, didn't escape the crackdown. On the same day, five of his locations were shut down, and the police arrested over twenty people. Dragon had it even worse, and Peter, aware of Dragon's status as the biggest gang, was determined to make a statement. He carried out raids on twenty Dragon-affiliated locations, arresting hundreds of people. Other gangs also faced heavy blows and were infuriated, cursing Peter for setting back the criminal underworld by at least five years.
