Chapter Fifteen

This person would be an A-ranked adventurer by Arthur's guess, he instantly knew to dispatch the guards before they could call for help. Being fast enough to keep up with Arthur while using his 'Gift of Speed' passively is something anyone below B rank shouldn't be able to do. That blood attack travels at extreme speeds as well. This was no ordinary criminal, this had to be a high-ranking noble or mercenary hired to kill Arthur. Arthur desperately tried searching for a solution, should he just book it for the entrance or fight the enemy? No, he had to get into the city. The person following Arthur wouldn't be able to follow him after that. Attacking Arthur inside the continent is highly illegal as well, he had to have high-ranking allies to be able to pull off something like this and get away with it.

Hearing sticks and branching creak behind him as he ran, Arthur realized to his horror that it was more than one person following him. 'Do they all have the same magic ability or maybe the others were waiting for an opportunity to attack?' Arthur was only a few short meters away from the gate by now. Arthur made it into the gate without getting shot at again, he felt all the presences vanish at the same time he entered the city. He didn't stop running until he got to the inn, seeing Eldarion standing there Arthur sighed in relief.

"I know you're a bit late but you didn't need to run here." Eldarion stared at the heavy-breathing Arthur

"I... wasn't... running... because I was late... people were trying... to kill... me"

"In the continent? Well that's quite a surprise"

"That's all you... have to say?" Arthur said staring with tired eyes at Eldarion

"Did you see the features or abilities of these people?"

"I'll tell you... after resting for a bit"

"Fine"

After resting for ten minutes Arthur continued the conversation.

"I only saw one ability, it was a blood manipulation technique. It was shot at me from afar so I didn't see who shot it or what they looked like."

"Having the confidence to fight in the continent means they were either hired by high-ranking nobles or extremely confident in killing you, I would go with the former since if they were confident in killing you well you wouldn't be here right now."

"That's the same conclusion I came to as well. Any ideas who would want me dead?"

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"That's what I was going to ask you. Who would hate you enough to hire a mercenary to dispose of you? You just arrived here and haven't even met anyone besides Scarlett and myself."

"So you think Scarlett did this?" Arthur said bewildered

"I didn't say that, but it does seem likely."

Arthur closed his eyes to think a bit about the new information. Deciding to eat something before thinking further he ordered a delicious steak and potatoes, which of course Eldarion paid for since Arthur was broke. Almost forgetting about his situation because of the well-made food, he started thinking through any possible reason Scarlett would want him dead. 'Was it really because she thought of me as a nuisance? No, I don't think so, since she allowed me to go see her in the castle today' Biting down on a juicy slice of steak he thought of the only other possibility.

"Could it have been Michael?"

"Don't ask me I don't know anything about that man"

"I guess so" Arthur said a bit stumped on what just happened, he decided to just think it was Scarlett for now since that made the most sense, Arthur still had no idea why she would do such a thing.

"On an entirely different subject, we should go out on a quest tomorrow unless you got injured in the fight?"

"No, I should be ready to go. What type of quest did you get for us?"

"Kill 5 direwolves that have been plaguing the surrounding farmlands"

"Sounds easy enough." Arthur said while getting up to go to his room for some sleep.

"Well goodnight and see you tomorrow"

"Goodnight Arthur"

The next morning they met outside and got ready for the adventure ahead. Arthur was nervous and excited for his very first quest, Eldarion on the other hand was calm like he always was.

"Ready?" Eldarion asked

"Yeah"

"Let's go then"

It took them three hours to get to the location where the direwolves were supposed to be. The location looked like normal farmland with wheat, carrots, and potatoes growing all around them. They saw the farmer's house in the distance, it looked like a normal house two stories tall and ten meters wide, just like the Guild it had vines and plants growing on the roof and walls of the place but unlike the guild Arthur couldn't see any cracks in the walls.

"I'll go speak with the owner just wait here and I'll be back soon"

With that, Eldarion left Arthur to his devices. Arthur decided to memorize the surroundings in case they needed to retreat somewhere. Just outside the reach of the farmlands was a compact forest that looked entirely closed off and extremely dark inside, to his left was the wheat farm, all of the wheat being a meter or so tall and all growing right next to each other making it an easy place to set up an ambush. To his right was the carrot and potato farm it being mostly open area and very visible, quickly being dismissed by Arthur. Behind him where they came from, the tall Hyperion trees were quite menacing looking when Arthur thought about it. Arthur was trying to memorize every detail when he saw Eldarion walk out of the house and back over to him.

"So where too?"

"He said they're mostly to the left of us. So there where the wheat is growing." Eldarion said pointing towards the wheat farm.

"Of course, they are" Arthur said sighing.

"Let us get going, we should find them before it gets dark.

"Agreed"

They searched in and around the wheat when they found a nearby cave with footprints leading into it.

"That looks like the place." Eldarion said readying his arrows and stringing his bow.

"Sure does." Arthur said also unsheathing his sword.
