Chapter 5: Heart Goes Doki

Chapter 5: Heart Goes Doki

For lunch Raven helped Bella cook a meal as she took care of the baby, and later went with them to the park. Though the baby couldn't walk, and had to be pushed around in the stroller. But it was nice to just relax and walk through the park, see how the trees reflect light, or listen to the birds chirp.

On Sunday she met up with another friend of hers and helped her out with some work around the house, which took all day.

When Raven woke up the next day she remembered still hadn't decided about what exactly the game would be about. Time travel was too broad of a topic, and since her boss didn’t like the murder mystery side of it, she had to find something else. Now, however, wasn't the time to ponder, so she locked the front door and walked to her car.

As she drove to work, there was a car accident slowing the whole traffic down and she hoped that whoever was in it made it out without bigger complications. She wondered what it would be like if she was the one in the accident. Such a horrible thought, that wouldn't let her stop thinking about it. She remembered something about how people can lose their memories after a bad enough head concussion. That could be an interesting plot for the game.

You wake up as the main character, who forgot everything and then slowly recover your memories by going into the past and searching for answers about who you are, who you were.

“So what do you think about it?” Raven asked Daphne as soon as she finished explaining the new direction she wanted to take the game.

Daphne thought about it for a few seconds, “Alright, yeah. Do that.”

Raven couldn’t hide her smile, she's made it! Now all that was left was coding, which she was pretty good at. So she started coding everything and writing some basic dialogue that would best showcase the game's direction.

It took her hours to figure out and fix the game breaking bugs, and so she managed to do way less than she expected, but she should still have enough time left over the following month.

“Hey Raven, could you check some code for me real quick?” Alexander asked a few minutes before Raven finished with work.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

“Now? Can I figure it out tomorrow?” She asked, hoping he'll say yes to the latter.

“Ah, don't worry, it's just a small piece of code, just this,” he said and turned his screen so Raven could better see it.

Raven looked it over and over, ran the code to see what's wrong. Everything seemed to be written fine, but something just wasn't running correctly. After ten minutes she gave up, “I can help you tomorrow, it's late already.”

Alexander agreed, as he didn't have much say either way. He may have first met Raven just a year ago, when she started this job, but he knows she hasn't stayed late a single day in all time here. Maybe that's why all of her prototypes got turned down?

Next day at her job, Raven looked over Alexander's code once again. Now, with fresh eyes it was much easier to spot the problem in logic used to write the code, so she just retyped a few lines and ran the code once more. And it worked! Alexander thanked Raven for her help, before continuing with work.

Raven opened up all her programs once again and started writing the code. Another day went by, as she worked on the game.

When she was younger she loved to play games, she would play them all the time, and now when she's older she put all that love for them into making them. Though it took years before she coded her first game, her love for programming was sparked before the year 2000, when everyone was going on about the y20k, and how horrible its consequences will be. It was a time when everyone realized just how powerful coding can be. Though the problem never arose, as professionals fixed it before the date.

That was around the same time when Void was founded, taking the internet by storm as you could upload videos on it, and with its great search capabilities it truly became the only site you needed to know. Raven always dreamed working there, but alas she of course didn't get the job.

In 2014, just after finishing college, she joined Red Red, still a newer gaming company at the time. She among other things was the one who came up with Heart Goes Doki, though she originally didn't call it that. The new name was an executive decision that helped cater to the weeb audience. As they further developed the game Raven helped every step of the way where she could. Yet, when the year finished and there was talk about a raise she didn't get it. When the game hit the market and became a huge success on the market, she didn't see any bonuses. Not even a celebratory pizza party. And when she looked at the credits of who made the game she wasn't on it.

She asked around the company what's going on, and why didn't she get any credit for the game she developed, she created, thinking it must be some sort of a mistake. But all she got back were excuses and empty promises, telling her that if she can make a game prototype for the next hit, she is for sure getting a raise, even a promotion. That's the exact thing they told her before making this game, so she decided to just cut losses and resigned. After that it took her a whole year before she found a new job, at her current company.
