Chapter 269

The lich was in the process of powering up another potent energy blast, and the drake was racing towards him, empowered by the force that the lightning bolt had imbued it with. Jonathan gritted his teeth and headed for the lich, the source of the problem. His fist hammered into the force field, bending it slightly. The lich’s eyes widened, and it pumped more mana into the shield. Unlike its durability, the monster’s mana was not unlimited.

Jonathan swung again, creating a spike of Void energy in front of his fist. The attack slammed through the shield, almost reaching the lich. However, the drake had closed the distance, and a massive skeletal claw scythed through the air, straight into Jonathan. He was sent flying by the force of the attack, away from the lich. His bones ached as he flew, but luckily Smite had headed off a good portion of the damage.

Jonathan got to his feet, and approached his enemies, gathering as much power as he could in the meantime. Stamina raced to his arms and feet, and the Void coated his hands. As he worked, he could feel that there was something missing in his mastery of his stamina. There was something that he could do to increase his power. Jonathan stepped forward and vanished from everyone’s sight for a brief moment as his body exploded through the air. Using Void Slipstream, he cut down on his travel time, and rendered it impossible for the lich to track his movements.

Jonathan appeared in the air above the drake’s head, and he flipped midair, bringing his fist down towards the monster’s skull. It reared back, but it was too late. The strike flattened the monster into the ground, cracking its bones with its sheer power. The drake was pancaked into the earth, unable to move. The lich roared in anger and sent a barrage of energy bolts towards Jonathan, all of which he dodged. He flipped off the monster’s head and ran towards the lich, more Void energy blazing around his fists. He sent more power surging into his hands, creating the Void singularities of his Hungering Decay skill. Although black holes were technically an extension of Earth elemental energy, they fit well with the concept of the Void. Perhaps he would be able to increase his mastery in the future.

He dodged around more bolts of black lightning, increasing the charge in his fists as he went. By the time he had reached the lich, they were blazing with purple light. He drove his fist into the shield once more, focusing his Void energy into a tiny point. The attack drove through the shield, and he detonated the tip once it had bypassed the barrier. The energy roiled within the shield, which was now more like a cage for the lich. Its eyes burned brighter as the Void ate away at its skin and flesh. Pure terror was evident in its eyes. Jonathan realized why. Edgar had told him that the only way to kill a lich, other than breaking their phylactery, was to destroy their bodies so completely that there was nothing left. At this level of power, very few things could do that. The Void was one of them.

“Why do you wield the bite of the great abyss?” The lich wailed. “How does one such as you exist?”

“I think you have more important things to think about,” Jonathan replied, as he drew back his fist for another strike.

A portal opened beneath the lich, and it winked away to a location about fifty feet away. Meanwhile, the drake came lumbering after Jonathan, its hulking form leaving dents in the ground. It moved almost as fast as him, and before he could dodge, a massive claw hammered him into the ground. Bones crunched and sinews were torn beyond their limits by the strike. It was painful, but not overly inconvenient. It was time to pull out all the stops, now that the lich had been weakened.

With a grin, Jonathan channeled a tempest of Divinity into his body, causing it to glow like a golden torch. Greater Smite triggered, and he started to push back against the drake, forcefully lifting its claw off his back. The monster seemed confused, up until Jonathan grabbed the leg and swung the creature around. Even with its high level, and subsequent durability, it only weighed a few tons at most, as all of its flesh was missing. Jonathan swung the monster into the ground with all of his might, and its bones bent under the force. With his strength, he was like a monster in his own right.

Jonathan used the momentum to propel himself into the air, and he came down like a thunderbolt, his fists glowing with power. One slammed into the monster’s head, and the other slammed into its beck. A current of Voidlight ran between them, cracking the bone and creating an explosion of purple energy. Behind him, the lich screamed in rage, and snapped his fingers, banishing his dragon pet before it could die. The lich was in rough shape, with its skin sloughing off its bones. However, it was far from dead.

A swirling constellation of ominous green light surrounded it, coalescing into balls of power. The attacks swirled around its head, before launching themselves at Jonathan. They moved at high speeds, forcing their way through the air as they went. Each of them projected an intense sense of danger, which only increased as they started to condense midair. A few moments later, they had turned to pinpricks of power, each of which contained enough power to take out a small village.

Jonathan started running, but the balls chased him down, and one of them struck his leg. There was a moment of nothingness, and he almost paused, and then the pain hit him. The energy ball traveled through his armor like it wasnt there, and exploded within his leg, blasting it apart. Blood ran out of his armor, and he fell. Luckily for him, falling allowed the other balls to miss him. However, it was only a momentary reprieve, as they turned around. If one of those hit his head, it was all over. The lich laughed as it watched him struggle, malice evident on its face.
