Chapter 282

As the monster leered down at him, its beak slightly open, Jonathan summoned his power to his hands, ready for some impromptu visualization. For his finisher move, he wanted something with a bit more flair. The Void was incredibly powerful, but it lacked the sort of impressive area of effect as the other elements. It was an element designed to utterly destroy everything in its path, which meant that it did not require anything other than the most optimal amount of energy.

Jonathan drew upon his Hungering Decay skill, using the lessons that he had learned through his elemental cultivation to draw more and more power out of it. This time, rather than trying to create a scalpel, he created a hammer. Corrosive Void power streamed out around his fists, held loosely in place by his will. Instead of trying to cut a path through his foe, he instead focused on a different conceptual resonance of his element. Unfettered consumption. The Void was not an element easily satisfied by the bare minimum of destruction. Only his own perception of the element stopped it from racing out of control. However, with his massively improved stats, perhaps he could risk a bit of experimentation.

The crow hopped towards him, its obsidian wings twitching slightly as it moved. Its skin glowed with a faint internal light, shining through its thick stony feathers. Its beak was different from a normal bird’s, in that it was lined with sharp teeth. Yet more evidence that it was made by something that was not the System. Rather than marvel at its construction, Jonathan instead opened the floodgates on his Void power, letting it course down his arms. A pool of nothingness began to form around his right fist, and he started to compress it as it came. He had already gone beyond the normal amount of Void energy contained within his skill. As he worked, he tried to adapt the skill to what he wanted.

The crow eventually lost patience, and swooped towards him, razor sharp talons skittering along the ground as it flew just above the stone. Sparks flew, but still Jonathan worked. As the monster neared, he rolled to the side. His hand brushed the ground as he rolled, and a massive chunk of rock simply vanished into thin air, a testament to the fact that he was on the right path.

Jonathan got to his feet, and felt something click as his control maxed out. Any more power than what he currently was channeling would be dangerous. As the monster approached, its beak opened wide in anticipation of a quick meal, Jonathan struck. A metaphysical piston of stamina shot up from his core and into his arm, propelling it forwards like a meteor. Strength from his various thresholds added to this, making sure that the crow could not dodge in time. As he moved, the air billowed around his fist, imploding and rupturing as pure nothingness passed through it. As the monster’s beak came crashing down with enough force to shatter steel, Jonathan’s fist met it.

He instantly realized that his control was not as impeccable as it had first seemed as he lost control over the majority of his stored Void power. A rippling explosion of energy raced outwards, eating away at reality itself. Jonathan was thrown backwards as the sudden vacuum imploded, sending a sharp crack through the air. The corvid monstrosity didn't even get a chance to move before pure nothingness erased most of its body. Cracks and pops echoed through the air as the unevenly distributed Void energy disrupted the airflow in the area. Massive craters formed around Jonathan, eating dozens of feet into the ground. He simply watched in awe as his power made itself manifest upon the world around him. Although he hadn’t been able to make a skill from it, he knew that he was on the right track.

` Jonathan got to his feet as the energy contained within his technique finally petered out, looking in awe at the devastation that he saw there. Tons upon tons of rock had simply vanished into the ether, destroyed utterly by his power. If he could find a way to focus that power, he would be unstoppable. The only thing to do in any case was to train.

Uthraki villages passed by, quickly turning into cities. By this point, every single settlement had thousands or even tens of thousands of Uthraki, and were a bit too large for even Jonathan to casually assault. Not that he wanted to of course, as he was still trying to train his envisioned skill.

As he went, he left a trail of corpses behind him, mere whetstones for him to hone his power on. All manner of beasts assaulted him out in the depths of the volcanic plains, and all of them met their ends at the hands of the ever hungry Void. Jonathan had taken to solely using his Void abilities to kill the monsters, in a bid to train himself to use it more efficiently. He could tell that it was working, as his control over his overcharged Hungering Decay skill was growing tighter and tighter. At this point, after almost a day of grinding, he was able to limit the skill to a semicircle in front of him. Most of the energy was still wasted, but it was at least a start.

By the time he was in the very center of the world, Jonathan was starting to feel a sense of danger from the landscape around him. Massive Uthraki cities squatted low upon the ground like silent sentinels of the lava plains. Monsters the size of mountains roamed the land, shaking the ground with their thunderous footsteps. It was only when he had the misfortune to bump into a smaller monster that he finally was met with a challenge.

As Jonathan traversed a large canyon, he was suddenly beset with a horrendous screeching noise, echoing throughout the chasm. A blur rocketed out of the canyon, and landed next to him. A strange monster, about five feet taller than him, and far leaner, stood there. It was covered in short fur, and two antlers curled up out of its forehead like the crown of a wild king. Its fur glistened with magmatic light, and its body was like a whip. Five inch long claws graced its hands, and sharp fangs spilled out of the corners of its mouth.

Jonathan leaped backwards, and started to gather his power to fight, scanning the monster as he did so.
