Chapter 256

As he walked past the massive corpse, he thought about what Edgar had just said. The man, as usual, was wise, and what he had told him resonated with Jonathan. He already knew that he was a cut above the average. There was no need to slow his progression for something that he didn’t need in the first place. The fact that there were people stronger than him was simply a fact of life, not a personal failing. There was always time to grow if one did not throw their lives away. The fact that Jonathan was able to basically solo a boss over a dozen levels higher, while that monster was enhanced, was a testament to his strength.

Jonathan walked into the shattered throne room, picking his way around the broken shards of rock that littered the ground. Only the chest, likely protected by the System, remained unscathed from the battle.

Edgar walked over to him, and peered down at the chest. It looked much the same as the chest on the second floor had been, but it was a bit larger, and it exuded a powerful aura. Edgar gestured to the chest, as if telling Jonathan to open it. He obliged.

With a dull creak, the chest opened, revealing a pile of items. The interior of the chest seemed to be larger than the exterior indicated, and there were multiple armor pieces in there, seemingly from different sets. There was a dusky chestplate that looked like it was from the same set as the helmet that Jonathan had found earlier. He pulled it out, and analyzed it, curious.

Twilight Chestplate of Tartarus

Tier 2 Armor

This chestplate is part of the four piece set that can be found by fighting through the Dungeon of Endless Twilight. The set pieces can be found randomly distributed throughout the dungeon. While worn, it provides a bonus to defense that increases based on the relative light in the area. The full bonuses can only be unlocked when the full set is worn.

Bonuses: Locked

It seemed that there were different types of armor in this world. This armor provided more overall boosts to his ability to fight, with its special bonuses, but it was not a growth set. Perhaps Tier 2 and above armor that was crafted specifically for that level was more powerful within that Tier, but did not have the opportunity to grow. At this rate, he would be able to assemble the full set. Perhaps he would make a switch if it proved to be worthwhile.

Edgar was poring over another armor piece that had caught his eye, one that seemed to be made from crystals. If ever a piece of mage armor had been made, this was it. Edgar frowned at the description, but then put the helmet on. Immediately, Jonathan could feel a sudden pressure radiate out from the man, drawing on his elemental energy.

“What’s that?” He asked.

“The helmet provides a boost to my elemental aura. Great against lower level fighters, but not so much at this level.”

Jonathan gave the man a thumbs up and returned to his perusal of the chest. There were two other armor pieces, from different sets. A pair of boots, and another chestplate. He pulled out the boots first, and scanned them.

Boots of Twilight Haste

Tier 2 Armor

These boots are part of the four piece set that can be found by fighting through the Dungeon of Endless Twilight. The set pieces can be found randomly distributed throughout the dungeon. While worn, it provides a sizable boost to speed and agility in the dark. The full bonuses can only be unlocked while the whole set is worn.

Bonuses: Locked

All of the armor descriptions were almost entirely identical to each other, and the only thing that changed was the unique effect. Still, a lot of them sounded powerful. He put the boots down and then analyzed the chestplate.

Chestplate of the Corrupted Twilight

Tier 2 Armor

This helmet is part of the four piece set that can be found by fighting through the Dungeon of Endless Twilight. The set pieces can be found randomly distributed throughout the dungeon. While worn, it provides a sizable boost to any magical abilities that revolve around corruption and destruction. The full bonuses can only be unlocked while the whole set is worn.

Bonuses: Locked

Jonathan raised an eyebrow. This seemed like it was suggesting that it could empower his Void abilities. He took off his normal armor and then slid on the chestplate, feeling a slight resonance with his elemental energy. He pointed his hand towards the castle wall and summoned a Void Cannon. A pulse of purple light, tinged with streaks of darker energy, shot out. When it hit the wall, it exploded, blasting away chunks of the rock. Veins of purple spread across the wall, dissolving it rapidly. Jonathan stared at his hand, and then took the armor off. It was a sizable boost, but he did not like the idea of relying on a piece of equipment to enhance such a powerful part of his fighting style. He would be able to create the same effect eventually, and without the help of the armor.

He peeled the chestplate off, and slid on his normal suit of armor. In addition to the armor, there were a few rings and necklaces that shimmered with power. Jonathan scanned them one at a time.

Ring of Dusk’s Embrace

Tier 2 Magical Item

This ring is infused with the concealing power of the dark. It enhances one’s defenses while in darkness, and allows for the absorption of a set amount of percentage damage per day. This set amount of damage recharges while the ring is in the darkness.

Bonuses: +6 to Resilience, +6 to Constitution

The ring looked interesting enough, and Jonathan slid it on, feeling the shadowy encroachment of the false stats as he did so. Stats from armor or weapons did not show up on his sheet, instead fulfilling their purpose more silently. The next ring was plainer in purpose.

Ring of Twilight Strength

Tier 2 Magical Item

This ring provides a sizable boost to Strength and a small boost to the efficacy that one can bring to bear. These boosts are halved during the day.

Bonuses: +50 to Strength

Jonathan raised an eyebrow. Although the ring was very basic, it was good at what it did.
