Chapter 273

Jonathan found it funny that the messages seemed to come from some sort of stock library, as they had absolutely no relevance to his actual progression path. The only thing left to do before he butchered his way towards the boss was to read his stat sheet. He only hoped that it would be enough against the final boss of the dungeon.

Jonathan and Edgar used their full power as they fought towards the mountain in the center of the realm. The various volcanic monsters that lounged in the rivers of molten rock posed little trouble to the two powerhouses, and they approached the center rapidly. There was little to this floor, save for a gauntlet of foes that needed to be bypassed to find the boss. However, that likely meant that the boss was head and shoulders above anything else in this dungeon.

The steady inhalations and exhalations of the monster accompanied their journey, laying an atmosphere of wary anticipation over them. As they neared, the aura of the monster could be felt billowing out from the cavern that it dwelt in. It was extremely powerful, but still noticeably weaker than Granath. Leaving piles of corpses in his wake, Jonathan picked his way across the lava fields towards his final goal. The rewards for this were most likely rich indeed.

His newly improved stats made a world of a difference in terms of his fighting capabilities. Each threshold was a massive, exponential increase in power, and both stats made that readily apparent. His mana control and reserves were impeccable, driven by his superhuman intelligence. Meanwhile, Edgar had complete control over his elemental constructs, powered by the insight that he had gained into his fighting style. The man focused mainly on Intelligence and Wisdom, both of which were far higher than Jonathan’s own. They were at least at 2000 points, if not more. It still wound up being a lot less than Jonathan’s total stat points, but it was highly impressive.

Eventually, they reached their target, standing outside of the mountain. The cave mouth loomed in front of them like the hungry maw of a titan, enticing them into its depths. However, that proved to be unnecessary. As soon as they arrived, the breathing noise grew irregular, and a dull rumbling could be heard coming from the mountain. Rocks began to tumble from its sides as something massive stirred. A few seconds later, the mountain burst apart as massive wings pushed their way out into the world, threaded with black veins. A single flap carried their owner up into the air, showing off its full glory to the two men. A massive drake, hundreds of feet in length and with a wingspan even wider, hovered in front of them, gazing down with jet black eyes. It appeared to originally have been a fire drake, but it had been corrupted by the darkness of the dungeon.

Jonathan quickly scanned the monster as it appraised them, wanting to see what they were up against.

Jonathan did not recognize the monster’s species, but he could guess. It was likely the bastard child of a dragon and a drake, with the strength of both. It would not be as strong as a true dragon, but it would be more powerful than a drake.

The monster seemed to have had enough of watching, and it roared, projecting a cone of blistering air at them. It reared back its head, and a ball of dark tinged fire formed in his mouth. Jonathan and Edgar scattered, and the drake loosed its attack. A beam of molten energy sliced through the world, cutting a mile long canyon into the ground. Lava rushed in to fill it from the rivers. The monster swooped down, and landed, its footsteps shaking the ground.

Jonathan made a beeline for its legs while Edgar focused on buffing him up. With a few thousand stamina points, Jonathan flitted towards the monster’s leg, banking on the fact that its extreme size made it slower than him. The monster stomped the ground, trying to shake him, but his strength was sufficient to resist. He landed on its claws a moment later, preparing to race up its leg.

Edgar floated in the air, sending bolts of wind towards the monster. A shield of power surrounded him as he worked. However, the attacks were doing little to no damage, and the monster ignored them like they were the bites of a gnat.

Jonathan clambered up the side of the leg in a matter of seconds, sinking his gauntlets in to make handholds. Such was the thickness of the monster’s scales that it didn't even notice. Instead, it flailed around, trying to find them. Even with the perception of a peak Tier 2, it was unable to pinpoint them with such a large bodily surface area. However, none of that mattered if they could not damage the beast.
