Chapter 341

Essence drifted out of the corpse in a tide, propelling those involved in the fight upwards in level. Jonathan welcomed the energy, and opened his status sheet, knowing that he had a plethora of points to allocate.

With almost three hundred points waiting to be used, he was sitting on a goldmine of potential power. Because of the way his build worked, he knew that he needed to bring his stats back into balance with one another. With that in mind, he split up the points, placing 99 into Intelligence and Resilience. The rest, he saved for later. With that done, he was left with the following stats.

Satisfied with this, Jonathan closed his stats, and shook his hands clear of the filth that girded them. He jumped back onto the wall, and smiled at the others.

“That wasn’t too hard,” he said.

“They usually travel in packs,” Branth replied, not looking as enthused.

“Oh.” Behind him, a sudden rumbling noise arose from the mud, and he turned to see a dozen small hillocks of ooze rising from the bogs. “I see.”

The monsters struck the walls a moment later, staying underneath the ooze unlike the first one, which must have been some sort of scout. The obsidian trembled, but held. The Uthraki had reinforced the base of the wall, extending it downwards for dozens of feet below the surface of the swamp.

The monster gnawed at the rock with their fang filled mouths, but their teeth simply chipped away at a tiny layer, without doing much damage. The four Uthraki raised their hands towards the air, and a massive sword began to form above the worms, fashioned out of lava, rock and fire. As they did this, Edgar snapped his fingers and a dozen clones made out of wind leaped off the battlements, landing amid the fray. Each was armed with a longsword, with an edge honed to a molecular level by Edgar’s power. They set about themselves with the weapons, sending sprays of blue blood everywhere.

Jonathan pulled his mace and club off his back and started to imbue them with energy. It was time to finally press past the last few levels separating him from the next Tier of mastery.

He dropped like a purple flamed meteor from the heavens, and landed upon the monsters, his weapons glowing with power. Each one came down with a thunderous crash, slamming into a different monster. There were twinned detonations of light and fury, blasting chunks off the creatures.

As Edgar’s clones fought, Jonathan joined them, weaving and out of the battle to inflict maximum damage. Meanwhile, the sword conjured by the Uthraki fell, slowly gathering speed and power as it went. It impacted a moment later, expanding outwards in a storm of shrapnel. The attack blossomed in the midst of the monster congregation, killing multiple with a single blow. The rest were mopped up by Jonathan and the wind clones.

He found himself lagging behind somewhat because of his choice of weapon, but he eventually found a rhythm with the armaments, and he knew that when he finished the battle, he would be greeted by a rank up. As the monsters died, essence continued to pour into him and the defenders.

By the time the battle was over, over a dozen monster corpses lay strewn across the ground. Each of them was battered and broken, but still represented the might and power of a Tier 3. Then Jonathan had an idea. He summoned the Ash Heaps portal, and grabbed onto one of the corpses.

“Help me out here,” he commanded.

The others caught onto his idea quickly enough. Some of the worms rose, born on palanquins of wind, while the others were dragged by tendrils of molten rock. Jonathan tossed his corpse into the portal, and watched as it was sucked in, transported back to his base in the Ash Heaps. Hopefully his people there would be able to do something with the materials. They were tougher than anything one could find in that realm.

Jonathan returned to the walls, and opened his notifications. The others did the same, likely dealing with multiple level ups. Due to his lack of contribution, given his training, he hadn’t gained a level, but he had gained something more valuable.

You have reached Apprentice Rank 2 with Club Mastery!

Your talent for this weapon, fit for brutes and those with low intellect, has become greater than most reach with it. After all, a club only needs high strength to be properly utilized. However, you have gone beyond this, leveraging your talents of footwork and speed to create a cohesive fighting style with this weapon.

Bonuses: +10 to Strength, +5 to Dexterity

You have reached Apprentice Rank 1 with Mace Mastery!

A mace is a step up from a club, but still a weapon for those less discerning in the arts of war. Despite this, you have attempted to rise above this stigma, and wield this weapon like an extension of yourself. Of course, you are far from any sort of true mastery.
