Chapter 8.1 & 8.2 - Training

Talking about each and every day would be pretty boring since not much changes everyday.

I mean we are in the middle of the desert…just walking on….and on…..and on….there really isn’t much to talk about….even amongst each other….

So I’ll mention only some of the more important days:

Day 11

The Abbe finally spoke to us.

The three of us were sitting in a seiza posture while the Abbe paced back and forth.

Gustav got scolded by the Abbe for being careless with desert worms.

I got scolded for taking such a risk; apparently I should have sought safety and let the Guardians die…

Maylon got scolded for being a good for nothing.

The Abbe decided that we needed to undergo a training regime to strengthen ourselves. He mentioned something about desert worms being weak monsters….us being pathetic…. how we depend on him too much…..and if he were to die…we would most likely die as well.

I don’t disagree with him…but the man’s a monster; metaphorically speaking (drats got his metaphor speaking disease).

Maylon and Gustav tried to protest but were silenced with more thunderous shouting and yelling.

Day 12

Our training begins today.

Early morning, I assist Maylon tackling her cowardice by waking her up. Just to report, today I got to grope her a bit which was met with a resounding slap. To me that’s cowardice cured.

This was followed by me duelling Gustav. We are allowed to use any weapons however the only rule is not to attempt a move which could kill.

There were two reasons the Abbe wanted us to fight in the morning; one the sun would be up but the glare would not be that strong. According to the Abbe, I needed to learn a way to fight during the day without being killed by natural light. The second reason was that the Garzala tend to be stronger during the day, so the fight would be more evened out.

I won’t get into the details of the fight…let’s go with it ended in a draw…Once, we are done fighting, I get back into my hole and practice shape manipulation. It really is painful but today I have been a bit quicker in making six tentacles.  After completing the task once, I try to get some shut eye since I have more training at night. What makes it challenging is that I need to try to sleep during the day when it is so hot.

The Abbe took a part of my slime with him and went off with the others; this too is part of my training.

I am supposed to find my back to them, while working on my running, stamina, hunting etc.

I told you the man is a monster.

Magic training is on hold, not because the Abbe can’t teach magic but because he wants me to first reaching a “normal” physical conditioning level.

As per the Abbe, I am right now as weak as insect.

The Abbe also needed to check whether I am capable of using magic. Although I created a power wave manipulation, he is not certain whether that is the same as using magic…when he said it like that it occurred to me that I may not really be able to use magic…I simply assumed at the time that wave manipulation would enable to me to control magic….I am uncertain at this point if my body has any organ capable of using magic…

Day 19

It has been a week since my physical conditioning began.

- Memory Blob is at level 10.

- Stealth is at level 7.

- Blood Thirst is at 33 – unchanged since the start

The sparring sessions have been going smoothly, it bothers me that I haven’t gained any fighting stat. Usually, a week spent in Royal Road would increase STR or AGI or VIT or something…If I remember correctly, there was a nut job who hit the scarecrow for 4 weeks straight to up stats…who was he?

I think I would qualify better than the nut job since I have been practicing with a live target…though I feel I gain very little from these sessions…

Gustav is fast but as long as he is restraining himself from killing me, that’s all he is capable of. His punch has no power to them and his critical attacks are way too obvious. I am not sure who this training is for; Gustav or me? The Abbe won’t clarify on the matter and keeps mumbling something about how much I lack…

Today is a bit special; the Abbe informed me last night that I’ll begin seeing a difference in the matches going forward… I wonder how will today’s sparring session proceed.

The Abbe steps up and draws a square in the sand; that is supposed to our fighting ring.

I am not sure if this is a mimic of the boxing ring but the Abbe doesn’t seem to know about boxing. He said that the “ring” could be any shape or size, its only purpose was to define a safe (escape) area.

Gustav steps into the ring. His hands are covered in cloth….Tell me this isn’t boxing…

I am not sure what the Abbe intends to do by wrapping his hands in cloth but it seriously is only going to make the blows softer….or that is what I thought…

The Abbe claps his hand to signal the session has begun.

Gustav runs forward, I think he intends to charge against me head on….and trip me over?

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

I simply drop my curtain garb and embrace for impact. If you want to charge do so at your own peril cause I am so going to absorb you.

Strangely enough the sight of my jello-slight-green-glowing body did not deter Gustav from his charge.

Something is suspicious; I decided to dodge last minute.

Now when I say dodging, I don't mean taking a side step or moving in the normal sense.

Dodging is a bit more interesting for me; rather than practicing dodging the conventional “human” way that I have been taught…I try to dodge by changing shapes. I mean there would be no point to having a slime body if I just try to move like a human. I might as well then have gone for a human like body.

Let's just say when you have a new body, the idea is to be as imaginative as possible. As human beings we tend to grow on to habits. Walking is just one example of that. Walking is certainly the most efficient way for a human to move but not for a slime. My reasons for taking on human shape are in preparation for the future where there might be a situation where I may need to resemble humanly form....but if I were to be attacked, defending like a human may not be the smartest idea. In these situations I need think differently.

Now take the action dodging, by simply focusing on shifting my body mass from my left to my right side, I can move without lifting a leg. Imagine a blob simply flowing from one position to another. Right to left is very obvious, but backwards this works brilliantly. Since my backside is not visible, shifting my center of gravity and mass, enables me to appear to move without having moved my legs. Basically, the conventional dodge, it becomes harder for a warrior to figure out where am I dodging to. Well…harder would be an overstatement, it would only works once I guess for a first class warrior.

The first time I did this, it freaked out everyone. Everyone simply assumed that because I assumed a humanoid figure it was likely that I would fight like one. However, I am trying to be more imaginative here. There is no point in having a slime body if I am not going to be creative with it….yes I can be creative outside the perverted realm.

The feeling of moving my internal body mass around is best described as weird. It used to hurt a lot initially but with memory blob levelling up several times, it became easier. To describe the sensation…imagine sticking something like a rod down your stomach and moving it around…that’s what it feels like when I move my internal organs around…

Normally, I don’t dodge Gustav. I suck him right up and then punch him internally till he manages to escape from my grip…but the thing Abbe said worries me…what could he be up to with those makeshift gloves?

My first mistake was believing the Abbe…

Dodging was my second mistake… Gustav was prepared for my sudden dodge; as I said first class warriors won’t keep falling for the same trick. He inclined further ahead, thereby accelerating his speed momentarily and dove straight for my torso.

I haven’t used this move before so, it was finally time to…this was my third mistake…doing something I never tried before…I quickly shifted position of my slime hand and moved it towards my torso to push Gustav away…

Gustav had been waiting for me…no I should say that the Abbe had been expecting me to do something like this….so he had set me up for a trap by telling me something would be different. The doubt he created in my mind made me dodge the first attack…and because I reacted to the script so perfectly…everything else only had to fall into place.

Gustav grabbed my slime arm. He had exerted enough pressure to yank the extended portion off.

Before I could react to what was happening, Gustav plunged his hand into my body and grabbed my slime heart.

Technically, if he crushed my heart it would could as instant death….but this is just a multipurpose heart I have, even if he crushes it…I doubt I will die….I think.

Abbe raised his hand; Gustav was the winner.

“A fool and his arm are quick to part.” The Abbe said.

I had nothing to reply. The same trick wouldn’t work on me twice but the lesson had been driven into my head.  I had been getting too cocky and this defeat set me straight…

I move towards my yanked out slime arm and absorb it back.

This was the first fight which left such a strong impression on me; not because I lost….but because I lost to a six year old. My confidence didn’t take a beating but I certainly don’t feel overly confident about my body being impervious to any or all physical attacks…just imagine if this was some first class fighter? I had been getting high beating a six year old and now I was shown my position.

The Abbe began packing their stuff (skinned rat bags) and preparing to leave.

I began digging my hole (I also gained a digging skill).

By the time the sun was up, everyone was gone and I was tucked away in my hole.
